An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile (易碎的) items like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them in the cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. So when there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits and fire during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases (楼梯) at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in ruins, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or the wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself.

C. in the bedroom D. in a place where children can’t reach them

Elements of Latin have made their way into many western countries. Data varies, but as much as 70% of words in English have a Latin or Greek root. By learning more about these roots and how they combine (结合) to create words, you will have an advantage in understanding new words, even if you’ve never seen them before.
The great thing is that you’re not learning the whole language with its grammar. You just need to memorize some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English. So how do word roots work?
Every word has a root. This part contains the key to a word’s meaning. Take the word “happy”, for example. This word only contains the root, which means full of joy. Some words, however, have extra parts. We call these affixes (词缀), including prefixes, the part attached before the root, and suffixes, the part attached behind the root. Based on the additional meaning of the prefixes and suffixes, the meaning of the final word will be shaped to mean something new.
Take the word “autobiography” for example. The root is “bio”, meaning life. You may have noticed that many words with “bio” have something to do with life or living beings—biology, biography, and so on. When the suffixes “graph”, meaning to write, is added to it, it means a story about someone’s or something’s life. “Auto” means by oneself. Altogether, an “autobiography” is a story about a person’s life, written by the person himself or herself.
In a word, a better grasp of word roots can make you understand the English language better, and will help you with your vocabulary recognition and memory skills.
4. What’s needed to understand new words with roots?
A. A good understanding of Latin or Greek. B. A full understanding of grammar.
C. The ability to recognize different parts of words. D. The ability to speak various Western languages.
5. What do we know about the roots?
A. It can’t form a word by itself. B. It is a necessary part of a word.
C. It is more important than affixes. D. It has a relatively simple meaning.
6. What is the meaning of “biochemistry”?
A. The science that is related to living things.
B. A person who does research about chemistry.
C. A person who does research about living things.
D. The study of chemical reactions occurring in living things.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A Secret of understanding new words. B. Latin’s way into Western language.
C. Amazing power of affixes. D. Tips on language exams.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down the river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产): bamboo drifting.
Over 2,000 years ago, the high-quality wood, nanmu, in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo’s lower price. Due to the skills it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list this year.
Yang Liu, a 24-year-old inheritor of bamboo drifting, learned it at 7. “Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float. Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key, so we should fight against the current by constantly changing the angle. I lost my balance and fell in the water many times while practicing. Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part.” she said.
The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat. As hanfu culture has been on the rise, Yang started wearing hanfu while performing, creating a more beautiful feel. In 2020, Yang began to post her videos on social media. “I’m extremely proud to get responses from viewers that bamboo drifting makes the line between what is possible and impossible unclear. It’s my mission to keep it alive and known to more people,” Yang Liu told China Daily.
8. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A. Bamboo drifting calls for lots of skills. B. Nanmu was delivered to the north by land.
C. Bamboo was expensive in Guizhou 2,000 years ago. D. The martial arts movie is a form of cultural heritage.
9. Why did wood drifting turn into bamboo drifting in the Qing Dynasty?
A. Bamboo was easier to find in Guizhou. B. Bamboo was more suitable for drifting.
C. Bamboo was cheaper than nanmu. D. Bamboo was more popular with local people.
10. What can we infer about Yang Liu’s experience of learning bamboo drifting?
A. She mastered the skill quickly at the age of 7. B. She never gave up despite frequent falls.
C. She only practiced bamboo drifting in warm seasons. D. She learned the skill mainly from social media.
11. What is Yang Liu’s purpose of posting bamboo drifting videos online?
A. To show the beauty of hanfu culture.
B. To prove that bamboo drifting is impossible to learn.
C. To make more people know and preserve bamboo drifting.
D. To share her daily life as an intangible cultural heritage inheritor.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. C

The UK is dealing with major river issues this year. A report by the Angling Trust says this spring was the hottest and driest ever recorded, causing serious pollution in many rivers. This is especially worrying because healthy rivers are important for drinking water, wildlife, and outdoor activities.
Only 14% of the country’s rivers are in good health. The high temperatures have made chemical pollution worse, showing that climate change is putting “heavy pressure” on Britain’s waterways.
From March to June, the UK experienced extremely hot and dry weather, leading to severe ecological impacts on rivers. With temperatures higher than normal and significantly reduced rainfall, river water levels dropped sharply. This concentrated pollution from farms, urban runoff and treated wastewater worsened water quality. The results of low oxygen level, high temperatures and increased poison have caused mass fish deaths — 87 incidents reported by the Angling Trust so far this year. In extreme cases, such as the River Teme and River Redlake, emergency fish rescues were required to prevent further losses.
A study by a water testing team also found that many river water samples contained too many harmful substances. Over half had too much nitrate (硝酸盐), which makes algae (藻类) grow too fast. Algae can use up all the oxygen in the water, impairing other living things. Another harmful chemical, ammonia, was also higher than in past years, making the water quality even worse. Small insects and plants that fish rely on for food are also disappearing due to these changes.
To save water, some areas like Yorkshire have banned the use of garden hoses (橡皮管). People are not allowed to water plants, wash cars, or fill pools with hoses. Those who ignore the rules may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000.
Experts said climate change is causing more hot and dry weather. This puts a lot of stress on water supplies, river animals, and the environment. The Angling Trust warns that action must be taken now — before it’s too late.
12. What worsened the river issues?
A. The extreme weather.
B. The overuse of drinking water.
C. The chemical pollution.
D. The wastewater pollution.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The method of protecting fish.
B. The impacts of weather on rivers.
C. A sharp drop in water level.
D The fish in need of rescue.
14. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “impairing” in paragraph 4?
A. Annoying. B. Impressing.
C. Exploring. D. Hurting.
15. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire people to protect wild animals.
B. To call on people to protect the rivers in the UK.
C. To inform a latest study about harmful material.
D. To encourage a positive attitude to climate change.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下列材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the serene (平静) morning, our school campus bathed in gentle sunlight. The air was still, with only the occasional (偶尔的) chatter of students and the rustle of books breaking the silence. The classrooms were alive with activity as students diligently (勤奋地) worked on their work, their faces lit by the soft light filtering (透过) through the windows.
But suddenly, the tranquility (宁静) was broken by a violent earthquake. The ground began to shake, sending a shudder through the entire school. The seismic (地震的) waves were so powerful that they sent a shiver (震动) down to every student. Among the chaos (混乱), a girl named Alice, a fellow member of our class, screamed and fled (溜) the classroom in a flash. Her flight was an obvious contrast to the dull (呆滞的) rest of us who remained seated, unmoved. Yet, as we sat undisturbed, students from other classes streamed out of their classrooms in a panic, their faces appeared with fear. The corridor (走廊) outside our classroom soon filled with the noisy of fleeing students, their footsteps echoing (回音) loudly in the otherwise silent morning.
Suddenly, the school’s broadcast system came to life, its voice echoing through the hallways, instructing everyone to evacuate and gather in the designated area. With the all-clear signal, we returned to our seats, trying to regain our composure (沉着). The teacher started the lesson as if nothing had happened, her voice soothing calm to our frayed nerves.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Para 1: Meanwhile, the ground shook violently once again, this aftershock stronger than the first.

Para 2: Yet, as we began to regain our composure, we realized that Bob had not made it out.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Meanwhile, the ground shook violently once again, this aftershock stronger than the first. Desks clattered and books slid off the shelves, slamming onto the floor. The teacher’s calm voice vanished instantly; she yelled at the top of her lungs, “Evacuate! Now!” Panic surged through us this time — no one dared to stay seated. We stumbled over each other, rushing toward the door, the sound of our frantic footsteps mixing with the creaking of the classroom walls. Alice, who had rushed back after the first quake, grabbed my arm and pulled me forward, her face pale but determined. We streamed into the corridor, joining the chaotic crowd heading for the playground.
Yet, as we began to regain our composure, we realized that Bob had not made it out. Our hearts sank like stones — Bob had been trapped under a fallen bookshelf when the aftershock hit, too slow to run with his injured leg. Without hesitation, our PE teacher, a burly man with quick reflexes, sprinted back into the building, ignoring our cries of warning. Minutes later, he emerged, carrying Bob on his shoulders, both covered in dust but safe. As we surrounded Bob, checking his injuries, the morning sun broke through the clouds again, casting a warm glow over the relieved faces of everyone on the playground.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters.
1. To reduce the injury from the earthquake, items made of glass should be put ________.
A. in the cupboards B. on a lower surface
C in the bedroom D. in a place where children can’t reach them
2. During the earthquake, people are advised to ________.
A. go out of the building at once B. shout for help
C. take shelter under a tree D. turn off electricity and gas immediately
3. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Remember to Protect Ourselves B. Call in Earthquake
C. Safety Tips for Earthquake D. The Influence of Earthquake
B
A. Secret of understanding new words. B. Latin’s way into Western language.
C. Amazing power of affixes. D. Tips on language exams.
C
C To make more people know and preserve bamboo drifting.
D. To share her daily life as an intangible cultural heritage inheritor.
D
The UK is dealing with major river issues this year. A report by the Angling Trust says this spring was the hottest and driest ever recorded causing serious pollution in many rivers.
13 What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The method of protecting fish.
B. The impacts of weather on rivers.
C. A sharp drop in water level.
D. The fish in need of rescue.

Born in America, I spoke English, not Chinese, the language of my ancestors. When I was three, my parents flashed cards with Chinese ___21___ at my face, but I pushed them ___22___. My mom believed I would learn ___23___ I was ready. But the ___24___ never came.
On a Chinese New Year’s Eve, my uncle spoke to me in Chinese, but all I could do was ___25___ at him, confused, shaking my head. “Still can’t speak Chinese?” He ___26___ me, “You can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown.”
“Hey, this is America, not China. I’ll get some ___27___ with or without Chinese.” I replied and turned to my mom for ___28___ .
“Remember to ask for fresh fish, Xin Xian Yu,” she said, handing over a $20 bill. I ___29___ the words, running downstairs into the streets of Chinatown.
I found the fish ___30___ surrounded in a sea of customers. “I’d like to buy some fresh fish,” I shouted to the fisherman. But he ___31___ my English words and turned to serve the next customer. The laugh of the people behind increased ___32___ their impatience. With every ___33___, the breath of the dragons on my back grew stronger — my blood boiling — ___34___ me to cry out, “Xian Sheng Yu, please.” “Very Xian Sheng,” I repeated. The crowd burst into laughter. My face turned ___35___ and I ran back home empty-handed, except for the $20 bill I held tightly in my hand.
Should I laugh or cry? They’re Chinese. I’m Chinese. I should feel right at home. Instead, I was the joke, a disgrace (丢脸) to the language.
Sometimes, I laugh at my fish experience, but, in the end, the joke is on me. Every laugh is a culture lost; every laugh is my heritage (传统) fading away.

第二节 (满分25分)
