Do you often send messages to your friends? Do you like using emojis (表情符号)? Emojis like smiley faces, hearts and thumbs-up (竖大拇指) make messages more fun. Which emoji is the most popular one? Let’s find out.
The first emoji came out in 1999. A Japanese artist named Shigetaka Kurita created it. His first set had 176 simple emojis. But now we have more than 3,500 different emojis. The crying face is the most popular emoji in 12 countries. People use it to show many feelings—not just when they are sad, but also when they are proud, happy or laughing.
The top emojis are similar in most countries. Crying faces and laughing faces appear again and again. But hearts are special. In many countries, people use hearts to show love for family or friends. But in Japan, hearts are usually used for romantic (浪漫的) love.

Relaxing and creative hobbies like knitting (编织), gardening, bird-watching and drawing are sometimes called “grandma hobbies”. In the past, these activities were mostly done by older women. But today, people of all ages enjoy them—and not just for fun! These hobbies can actually benefit both our mind and body.
Emma Palmer-Cooper, a psychologist (心理学家) from the UK, says that having small goals, like learning a new hobby or finishing a project, gives us a sense of purpose. When we reach those goals, we feel happy and proud. This helps improve our mental (精神的) health.
Science backs this up. A study from Princeton University found that gardening brings people the same joy as eating at a restaurant or going for a walk. Another study from Kansas State University showed that gardening helps older adults feel better about themselves.
Bird-watching is another great activity. A study found that seeing or hearing birds can improve our mood (心情), even if we’re feeling down. Drawing is also a fun and creative way to enhance our mental health. Research has shown that just 10 minutes of drawing a day can lift our mood. And if we keep doing it for a month, the effects are even stronger. These hobbies also keep our brain healthy. When we learn something new, like knitting, our brain becomes more active. This helps improve our memory and focus. Whether it’s gardening, drawing or watching birds, it could be your new favourite way to relax—and feel great

“Listen! That’s a magpie (喜鹊) singing,” said Xu Keyi, a 37-year-old wildlife photographer. She can tell birds just by hearing their calls.
Ever since childhood, Xu has loved photographing animals and dreamed of travelling around the world with her camera. After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Xu worked as a journalist (新闻工作者). Her life changed when she went on a trip to Antarctica. There, she saw penguin parents protecting their babies. That moment touched her deeply and made her love being in nature even more. In 2018, Xu decided to become a full-time photographer.
Xu has travelled all over the world, but her favourite place to take photos is still China. Last year in Yunnan, Xu woke up early one day and climbed a mountain to photograph green peafowl (绿孔雀). Even after hours of heavy rain and very hot weather, she didn’t give up and finally got the perfect pictures.
During a journey to photograph China’s golden Kaiser-i-Hind butterfly, Xu met an elderly wildlife protector. He told her, “Not many people are working to protect these butterflies.” However, after Xu published her photos of these butterflies, things began to change, and later, the old man sent her a photo of volunteers who wanted to help save the butterflies.
Xu is happy to see more and more people getting interested in wildlife photography. “There are also other things we can all do to help,” she said. “There are easy ways to protect nature in our daily lives.”

A. Her strong love of climbing mountains. B. Her dream of waking up early one day.
C. Her hope for the favourite place in China. D. Her courage of challenging bad weather.
15. For protecting China’s golden Kaiser-i-Hind butterfly, Xu’s photos are ________.

16. Which of the following is the easy way to protect nature?

Autumn in the UK was always a fun time when I was a child. At school, we loved collecting conkers (板栗). They fall from trees. Finding a perfect conker felt great! We played the classic game called conkers (打板栗游戏). You tie a string to a conker and try to hit your friend’s conker. It is such a popular game that there’s even a World Conker Championship every October.
Autumn is also a time for food. At home, my mom makes delicious British dumplings. Different from Chinese jiaozi, these dumplings are served in a warm meat soup. They are perfect for autumn days.
By David House
In the US, apples are the stars of fall. People drink apple juice and enjoy apple pie. Many people travel to farms to play bobbing for apples. In that game, you keep your hands behind your back and try to pick up apples from water—using only your teeth!
Pumpkin spice latte (南瓜香料拿铁) is another fall favorite at coffee shops like Starbucks. But one US fall food you may not know is chili. Chili is a dish made with meat, beans, onions and tomatoes. People often put cheese on top. For me, homemade chili was a happy part of growing up. It filled my stomach and warmed my heart.

After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Xu worked as a journalist (新闻工作者). Her life changed when she went on a trip to Antarctica.
