A
Europe’s mountain towns provide some of the most refreshing landscapes on the planet. But it’s the varieties of activities on offer that really shine.
Altaussee, Austria
Situated by the Lake Altaussee, it is a popular spa town. Water temperatures at the local lake can climb to 25℃ in hot weather, so it’s a draw for lake swimmers. Boating, hiking on the Tauplitz highland and cycling are also essential activities. In the town, the old- school, but luxury Siegglut apartments make a lovely base.
Morzine, France
Morzine is a lively town packed with country-style wooden cottages. Both hikers and trail runners are well- served by its many footpaths. Beyond this, when it comes to biking, the Portes du Soleil ski area is home to five bike parks, with 372 miles of trails and 22 bike-carrying lifts. If you’re new to the sport, schools such as Ride Ability can teach you the basics. For convenient stays, the highly rated Hotel Champs Fleuris is a super option, which is close to bike rental centers.
Laax, Switzerland
Laax has been the mountain getaway for young people. In winter, its impressive No Name terrain park is where they snowboard. And in summer you’ll find them showing off tricks in skate parks. But don’t get too caught up in the skateboarding: hiking, rock- climbing and high- ropes courses are all on offer at Laax, too. Here, the minimalist Riders Hotel is a recommended place to stay.
Chamonix, France
Mountaineering is the big draw in Chamonix on account of western Europe’s tallest peak, Mont Blanc. But we’re not suggesting you climb it. Instead, join an introductory course run by the Compagnie des Guides. Over five days you’ll learn the basics of safe mountaineering and also get the courage and perseverance to climb steep rock faces. In the town, Langley Hotel Gustavia is a cute and central base in which to come back and rest.
21. Which town will you choose if you want to enjoy water sports?
A. Chamonix, France. B. Laax, Switzerland.
C. Morzine, France. D. Altaussee, Austria.

B
It was an autumn day, and 1 was standing in the kitchen, hanging my head over the counter and trying to figure out how many calories were in a bowl of homemade yogurt and fruit. And I felt annoyed.
I was 16, and my best friend and I had gone to our first Weight Watchers meeting. It was the trend in the mid-1980s,and even though I was an athlete, like many teen girls, I didn't necessarily like what I saw in the mirror. But after a week or so of recording every meal and snack and calculating the calories, I had had enough. I went back to my routine of chowing whatever I wanted, running and skiing, and let that be that. And it's still pretty much what I do; as long as the workouts are regular and the food is whole and balanced, my body's set point hasn't varied for years.
The weight loss trend of three decades ago−full of scales and counting calories−has fallen away. Now fasting is popular. The ways to keep fit vary: on the 5:2 diet a person eats for five days and fasts for two days each week, while the 18:6 refers 10 fasting for 18 hours and then eating within a six-hour window each day.
In this issue, Associate Editor Mark Barna tries to understand the science behind the fasting plans. Researchers have found that animals like monkeys age more slowly after years of eating less, and in the lab in humans, they saw improvements in a number of signs that indicate risk of some hard to cure diseases. The hope for healthy weight loss isn’t over yet, but at least now the calculators don’t have to be out at every meal.
24. What made the author annoyed?
A. Her body was not as strong as an athlete’s.
B. There were too many calories in the yogurt and fruit.
C. The Weight Watches meeting was not necessary for her.
D. She had to work out the calories in every meal and snack.
25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “chowing”?
A. Eating. B. Doing C. Cooking. D. Choosing.
26. How do people keep fit now?
A. They limit the calories they take in.
B. They lose weight only.
C. They fast daily or weekly.
D. They eat enough every day.
27. What do we know about the researchers’ finding in this passage?
A. People grow more slowly if they eat less.
B. People are healthier if they eat less.
C. People have stopped losing weight now.
D. People calculate their food for every meal.
D 25. A 26. C 27. B
根据第二段中“But after a week or so of recording every meal and snack and calculating the calories, I had had enough.”
根据第三段中“The ways to keep fit vary: on the 5:2 diet a person eats for five days and fasts for two days each week, while the 18:6 refers 10 fasting for 18 hours and then eating within a six-hour window each day.”
根据最后一段中的“after years of eating less, and in the lab in humans, they saw improvements in a number of signs that indicate risk of some hard to cure diseases.”
C
Elon Musk, perhaps the world’s most famous businessman, has a habit of making statements that stretch the bounds of believability.
On July 16th, 2019, he introduced a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI), starting from the design of a “neural lace (神经织网)”, a net of thin electrodes (电极) that capture the information from the brain. However, the electrodes must be flexible, so that they do not damage brain tissue and will last for a long time. And to make the implantation (植入) of so many electrodes safe, painless and effective, the process has to be automated.
Mr. Musk’s team does indeed seem to have made progress towards these goals. Its presentation included videos of a robot that is best described as a sewing machine. This robot grabs “threads”, and shoots them deep into the brain through a hole. The firm has also designed a chip that can handle signals from as many as 3,072 electrodes.
With all these technological breakthroughs, the firm now hopes to help people overcome such illnesses as blindness and paralysis. They designed a small device that would sit behind someone’s ear, picking up signals from the implanted chip and passing them on as appropriate. In a few years, using a brain implant to control your devices may be as prevalent as wearing wireless earphones today. Finally, Musk predicts neural lace will allow humans to be combined with AI systems, thus enabling the species to survive.
Though, as this announcement shows, Mr. Musk does have a habit of presenting himself as the hero of the human race, the idea that some machines at least will come under the direct control of human brains seems possible to be carried out. The biggest barrier to this happening will probably not be writing the software needed to interpret brainwaves, but rather persuading people that the necessary surgery, whether by sewing machine or otherwise, is actually a good idea.
28. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that _____.
A. electrodes should be flexible to extend life
B. Elon Musk constantly comes up with unexpected ideas
C. a neural lace is used to store information from the brain
D. electrodes are implanted by top surgeons for safety reasons
29. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Useful. B. Common. C. Professional. D. Appropriate.
30. What is the hardest part of carrying out BMI?
A. Convincing people to accept the surgery.
B. Developing devices to perform the surgery.
C. Writing the software to interpret brainwaves.
D. Informing people of the success of the surgery.
31. What is the best title of this passage?
A. The Neural Lace, A New Type of BMI.
B. Elon Musk, the Hero of Human Beings.
C. Artificial Intelligence, the Way to Survive.
D. A Brain Implant, A Step to Control Machines.
B 29. B 30. A 31. A
根据第一段中“Elon Musk... has a habit of making statements that stretch the bounds of believability.(埃隆·马斯克,有一种习惯,他发表的言论超出了可信度的范围。)”第二段中“On July 16th, 2019, he introduced a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI)” (2019年10月16日,他提出了一个关于新型脑机交互的想法。)
根据第四段中“They designed a small device that would sit behind someone’s ear, picking up signals from the implanted chip and passing them on as appropriate.”
根据最后一段中“The biggest barrier to this happening will probably not be writing the software needed to interpret brainwaves, but rather persuading people that the necessary surgery”可知,最大的阻碍可能不是写软件,而是说服人们做必要的外科手术。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“On July 16th, 2019, he introduced a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI)”可知2019年10月16日,他提出了一个关于新型脑机交互的想法。 故选A项。
是阅读理解的常考题型,题干中通常含有mean, refer to或者be replaced by等。例如第2小题中“In a few years, using a brain implant to control your devices may be as prevalent as wearing wireless earphones today.”
D
The world is changing, and so is the way we build things. Traditional construction materials have been causing environmental and resource problems, but now there are new, exciting alternatives on the rise. One of these creative materials is FabBRICK, a brick made from waste fabrics (织物).
FabBRICK was founded by architect Clarisse Merlet in 2019. During her studies in 2017, Merlet experimented with various waste materials, such as plastic bottles and cardboard. Her focus soon shifted to fabric waste, using cotton’s natural ability to block sound and heat to create ecological building materials. Merlet explains, “Being an architecture student made me look for ways to build differently. I created several models using eco-friendly glues and tried different ways to press fabric together. My successful model was fire-resistant and waterproof (防水的).”
FabBRICK works with businesses to transform their fabric waste into new products, promoting waste reduction and recycling awareness. The company processes unwanted clothes at a Parisian studio, where clothes are sorted by color and cut up into fibers. These fibers are then mixed with an ecological glue and pressed into bricks without the use of conventional dyeing, maintaining the fabric’s original colors.
These bricks find various applications, from individual blocks and dividing walls to furniture parts built into chairs and tables. FabBRICK’s innovative approach has made it possible to work with various brands, turning over 90 kg of recycled fabric into decorative wall coverings for stores like the Kilo Shop in Paris. The company also engages in significant projects, such as creating mobile walls that block sound for Decathlon’s new workspace in Lille, using over 200 kg of the brand’s leftover fabric from production.
The potential of FabBRICK as a structural material is still being explored. With the aim of expanding its market reach, FabBRICK is considering the establishment of factories in different regions to deal with local fabric waste effectively. Clarisse Merlet emphasizes the global applicable of FabBRICK, stating, “FabBRICK can be developed worldwide, as unfortunately, fast fashion is everywhere, providing a continual source of fabric waste.”
32. What made Clarisse Merlet focus on fabric waste?
A. Failed trails in experiments. B. Special properties of cotton.
C. Requirements from her studies. D. New ways to press waste.
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How the eco-bricks are made. B. What FabBRICK aims to do.
C. Who FabBRICK partners with. D. How colors are preserved in eco-bricks.
34. How does the author introduce the bricks’ application?
A. By offering rich statistics. B. By analyzing scientific principles.
C. By listing real-life examples. D. By comparing with other materials.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. FabBRICK has limitations as a structural material.
B. FabBRICK provides a continual source for fast fashion.
C. Fast fashion’s waste drives FabBRICK’s global expansion.
D. Building new factories is FabBRICK’s most important goal.

CONVENIENCE FOOD OR FRESH FOOD?
A new survey indicates that young people in China much prefer making fresh food to buying prepared food. Mei Lin, for example, is 22 and she is a college graduate from Anhui. Mei Lin has stopped buying cheap food at the supermarket. “I would much prefer my own bowl of noodles with fresh vegetables and a few spices to the packaged noodles I can buy in a store. It’s fresher and healthier, especially since I lead an active life.” Mei Lin often goes jogging in the evening and plays tennis at the weekend, in addition to swimming and training for a marathon in Xiamen in the autumn. She believes her fresh food choices help her stay fit and active.
But the trend isn’t one that only women are taking up. Su Bo, a 26-year-old computer programmer in Shenzhen, says that he has given up eating packaged meals except when he’s travelling for work. “For me, it’s a matter of wanting to be healthy and having enough energy. I have a very demanding job, and I need a sharp mind and strong body. It does take more time to go shopping, but I find my energy levels are higher when I eat fresh food.” Su Bo used to order many of his meals online, so that he could spend more time working, but he soon stopped his habit. “I realised it wasn’t good to never take a break from my job,” he said. “Besides, the food often made me tired.” For Su Bo this meant cooking his own vegetables, eating less meat, and carrying fruit to work for lunch. “Sometimes I buy one or two bagels from the food store on the corner, but I usually make and bring my own lunch to work.” Like Mei Lin, Su Bo insists that eating healthy food helps him with his fitness routine.
Both admit that in times of stress or busy periods at work, they do sometimes give in and eat fast food or packaged meals. “Sometimes I just have to eat something on the run,” says Mei Lin. “But I always regret it. I am so used to my diet now that when I eat less healthy food, I feel tired. I exercise less as a result.” Su Bo insists that he does still sometimes enjoy eating on the go. “But I almost always eat healthy meals. Because I live at home and my mother prefers to eat like I do, we often cook together. It’s my father who likes to eat fast food in front of the TV,” he laughs.
When asked whether their eating habits are common among their age group, both Mei Lin and Su Bo say they are. Yet, it’s not clear whether this food trend will be adopted by other young Chinese people. Are Mei Lin and Su Bo unique or are they setting a new trend? It’s too early to say.

Both occasionally eat fast food during _____79_____ times, but they usually _____80_____ it because it makes them feel tired and _____81_____ their exercise time.

A recent survey shows that young Chinese people today tend to ____67____ making fresh food to buying ____68____ food. Mei Lin, a 22-year-old from Anhui, ____69____ stopped buying cheap supermarket food and instead makes her own meals with ____70____ ingredients. She believes such a diet helps her stay ____71____ and supports her ____72____ lifestyle, which includes jogging, tennis, swimming, and marathon training.
Similarly, Su Bo, a 26-year-old ____73____ from Shenzhen, has also given up ____74____ meals except when traveling. For him, eating fresh food provides more ____75____ and helps him meet the demands of his job. Though shopping and cooking take _____76_____ time, he finds it worthwhile. He also mentioned that he used to _____77_____ meals online but stopped because it made him _____78_____ and prevented him from taking breaks.
Both occasionally eat fast food during _____79_____ times, but they usually _____80_____ it because it makes them feel tired and _____81_____ their exercise time.
When asked if their habits are _____82_____ among their peers, both said yes. However, it remains _____83_____ whether this trend will be widely _____84_____ by other young people. They might be _____85_____ examples, or perhaps they are _____86_____ a new trend—only _____87_____ will tell.
The comments online reflect _____88_____ for healthy eating, such as from @runner5295, who says eating _____89_____ is the best choice. Overall, the article explores whether young Chinese are shifting toward _____90_____ food for better _____91_____.
