After searching the house for a long time, he gave up and asked for help from a group of children playing nearby. He promised them that he would award the person who found the watch.
Hearing this, the children hurried inside the house. They searched everywhere but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was going to give up, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance.
The farmer looked at him and thought, “Why not? After all, this kid looks honest enough.” So the farmer sent the little boy back in the house. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised. He asked the boy how he succeeded while the rest had failed.
The boy replied, “I did nothing but to sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction.”
This shows us that sometimes a peaceful mind can think better than an active one.

Water is one of the most important resources on Earth. Without it, all living things, from humans to tiny insects and tall trees, would die. However, many people often waste water without even noticing. For example, leaving the tap running while brushing teeth, or taking long showers that last far too long.
Saving water matters a lot. It’s not just good for the environment but also important for our future. As our population grows, the demand for clean water keeps rising. If we don’t start now, there may not be enough water for everyone.
Thankfully, there are many simple ways we can save water in daily life. When washing hands, turn off the tap instead of letting it flow continuously. We can also collect the water used for washing vegetables to water plants.
Every small effort counts. If each of us takes steps to save water, we can make a big difference and ensure this precious resource is available for years to come.

The Instant Auto-Translator, or the IAT, will be in shops in the next week or so. It is the 36 product from Pineapple Intelligence. The IAT is an incredible piece of technology that will change the world we live in. The idea is very simple. The IAT takes what you say and instantly translates it into another language. At the moment, the IAT has 15 languages to choose from, but 37 it will be able to translate into any living language. Just 38 you are a Spanish-speaker talking to a Swedish before you say it. It is 39 directly to your brain so it doesn’t need to hear what you are saying. You don’t need to speak—it translates what you are thinking. The Swedish-speaker will hear everything in Swedish. If they also have an IAT, they can talk back to you in Spanish.
A.conversation B.useful C. expensive D.apart from E. partly
How does it work?
The IAT links with your brain using Wi-Fi. All you need to do is to have a small Wi-Fi chip put into your brain. Lots of people already have one—they are quite common these days and are not very 40 .Does it work well?
Here at the New Tech Magazine, we have tried the IAT and it works quite well. We found there were a few translation problems, but not too many. We tried translating from Japanese into English first. It used the word chicken instead of kitchen. But 41 that, it worked well. Then we tried translating from French into Greek and found that it didn’t have Greek as a language choice yet.Is it easy to use?
It takes some time to get used to using it. When two people are having a 42 using IATs, it is quite strange at first. You have to think what you want to say, which is quite different when compared to just saying exactly what it is that you want to say.Should I buy it?
If you travel a lot, you will find it very 43 . But we think you should wait until it has more language before you buy one. With its current price set at $599, it’s a good idea to see if it will become cheaper over time.

Part 3 Reading and Writing (第三部分 读写)
VI. Reading comprehension(阅读理解)(本大题共25题,共50分)
A. Choose the best answer(根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案) (12分)
The idea of a pet for an elderly person is one that is often considered. Elderly people may miss their friends and family who are no longer around. However, a kitten (a young cat) is not a good idea for an elderly person.
Kittens are tiring. Elderly people, even those in the best of health, will have a lot of difficulty chasing after a kitten and, unluckily, kittens do need a lot of care. They need to be trained not to destroy furniture and not to run up curtains (窗帘), and they need a lot of fun-time which an elderly person probably won’t be able to give them. And an elderly person will not want to look for the cat. It needs much physical energy.
It is not cheap to care for a cat of any age, but kittens can be particularly expensive. They need to be taken to the animal doctors for regular health checks, especially when they are young. Cat food is usually expensive, and their beds, toys and other things all cost much money. For an elderly person living on a pension (退休金), the cost can be more than they can bear.
Provided that an elderly person really does want an animal friend, an older cat would be a much better choice. Getting one from a cats’ home should make sure that it is already well trained. And with a little bit of care, it will live in a home with an elderly person. Asking advice from the cats’ home should make sure that a gentle cat will be good for an elderly person.
Anything that may cause extra stress (压力) for an elderly person should be carefully considered. So think of other ways to improve their quality of life.
59.From the first paragraph we can learn that the writer wants to ________.
A.correct a wrong idea B.introduce a pew gift
C.help the elderly D.keep a kitten as a pet
60.According to the passage, for elderly people taking care of a kitten ________.
A.is quite a simple task B.helps them exercise their body
C.takes too much of their energy D.brings them a lot of pleasure
61.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.The older cats grow, the more they cost.
B.The cost of taking care of kittens is high.
C.The regular health checks are useless when a kitten grows up.
D.The elderly people can keep a kitten as a pet if they can get more money.
62.What does the underlined word “bear” mean?
A.捐赠 B.承担 C.理解 D.控制
63.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.How to take care of the elderly.
B.How to keep away from all cats.
C.Older cats are a much better choice.
D.Elderly people should learn to train cats.
64.In which part of a newspaper does the passage most probably appear?
A.Health. B.Education. C.Business. D.Nature.

根据第一段“The idea of a pet for an elderly person is one that is often considered.”和“However, a kitten (a young cat) is not a good idea for an elderly person.”可知,给老年人养宠物的想法是人们经常考虑的,但小猫不适合老年人养;因此作者想要纠正这个错误的想法。故选A。
60.推理判断题。第二段“Elderly people, even those in the best of health, will have a lot of difficulty chasing after a kitten and, unluckily, kittens do need a lot of care. They need to be trained not to destroy furniture and not to run up curtains, and they need a lot of fun-time which an elderly person probably won’t be able to give them.”可知,照顾小猫需要很多精力,老年人即使身体健康也会有很多困难追赶小猫;据此可以推断,照顾小猫会消耗老年人太多的精力。故选C。
61.细节理解题。根据第三段“They need to be taken to the animal doctors for regular health checks, especially when they are young. Cat food is usually expensive, and their beds, toys and other things all cost much money. For an elderly person living on a pension, the cost can be more than they can bear.”
根据第三段“It is not cheap to care for a cat of any age, but kittens can be particularly expensive.”以及“For an elderly person living on a pension, the cost can be more than they can bear.”可知,饲养小猫费用很高,尤其是对于靠退休金生活的老年人来说,他们难以承受如此高的费用;据此可以推断,划线单词“bear”意为“承担”。故选B。
63.主旨大意题。根据第四段“Provided that an elderly person really does want an animal friend, an older cat would be a much better choice.”
故选A。

A Valuable Lesson
In my memory, they are full of valuable lessons. The most unforgettable one happened last term. I was not good at subjects at school and I couldn’t get good marks in exams. I felt worried about my study. At that time, my mother told me not to give up and kept trying. She gave a big hug and always cheered me up, so I decided to work much harder. I listened to the teachers more carefully in class and did more exercises after class.
Now I have done better in my study. I learnt from the experience a lot. I believe that nothing is too difficult if I put my heart into it. In a word, only the person who overcomes difficulties will be successful. The valuable lesson is unforgettable for me.

C.Business. D.Nature.

When I was fourteen, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn’t the first time I had been abroad. Like most English children, I learned French at school. So I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday there.
How 66 I was! The misunderstanding (误解) began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to call my friend Danny who had been in America for two years and told her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking confused and asked if he could 67 me.

“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me 69 the phone box is?”
“Oh! I see.” he said, “There’s a phone downstairs.”
When Danny and I met up, she explained the misunderstanding to me. Then I knew “Give somebody a ring” could mean deciding to get engaged or marry someone else. I felt shamed for myself.
“Don’t worry,” she said to me. “I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You’ll soon 70 all the funny things they say. Most of the time British and American people understand each other!

D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题) (12分)
Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays”? “Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities.
Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents. The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games, but “Survival Holidays” can change them a lot.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled(控制) by adults, but children don’t know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them. Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. All these skills will help them a lot in their lives.
78.Is “Survival Holidays” for children or parents?
79.Why do people like “Survival Holidays”
80.What do the children in big cities usually do?

The boy replied, I did nothing but to sit on the ground and listen in the silence. I heard the taking of the watch and just looked for IT in that direction. This shows us that sometimes a peaceful mind can think Better than an active one. Once a farmer lost his watch in a small house, the watch was cheap, but was very important to him because he was a gift from his father. After searching the house for a long time, he gave up and asked for help from a group of children playing nearby. He promised them that he would award the person who found the watch. Hearing this, the children hurt inside the house. They searched everywhere, but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was going to give up, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance. The farmer looked at him and thought, why not? After all, this kid looks honest enough. So the farmer sent the little boy back in the house. After a while, the little boy came out with the watch in his hand. The farmer was both happy and surprised. He asked the boy how he succeeded. This shows us that sometimes a peaceful mind can think Better than an active one. Listen to the next question. Water is one of the most important resources on earth. Without IT, all living things from humans to tiny insects and tall trees would die. However, many people often waste water without even noticing, for example, leaving the tap, running while brushing teeth, or taking long showers that last far too long. Saving water matters a lot. It's not just good for the environment, but also important for our future. As our population grows, the demand for clean water keeps rising. If we don't start now, there may not be enough water for everyone. Thankfully, there are many simple ways we can save water in daily life. When washing hands, turn off the tap. Instead of letting IT flow continuously, we can also collect the water used for washing vegetables to water plants. Every small effort counts if each . of us take . steps to save water, we can make a big difference and ensure this precious resource is available for years to come.
