Primary and middle schools in many cities have extended (延长) class “breaks” from 10 to 15 minutes. Why did they do this? The schools hope that both students and teachers can spend more time doing outdoor activities during breaks.
Before this change, most students only had 10 minutes between classes. If a class was on the third floor or above, students often found it hard to go outside. Think about it: going down stairs and up again takes a few minutes. By the time they got to the playground, there were only a few minutes left. So many students just stayed in the classroom or walked in the hallway. Now with 15 minutes, they can run to the playground, jump rope, or play games with friends. This change helps students meet the goal of doing at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Most cities in China have all started this 15-minute break.
Most people think having longer class breaks is helpful. “My child comes home happier,” said a parent. “She can play outside and relax her eyes.” Teachers also notice good changes. “Students are more focused (注意力集中) in class after a longer break,” said Mr Li, a maths teacher. “And when they play outdoors together, they learn to work as a team—like in basketball or tag games.” For students, it is good for their health because they can have more time to relax. Both parents and teachers also agree with 15-minute breaks. Longer class breaks can help make students’ social skills better in activities.
1.What did most students usually do during 10-minute class breaks?
2.Why couldn’t students on higher floors do outdoor activities before?
3.What do many people think of a 15-minute break?
4.Who agrees with 15-minute breaks?
5.Do you like longer class breaks? Why or why not?

It is easy for many people to catch a cold in spring or fall. It makes us wonder since scientists can send a man to the moon, why they can’t find a cure for common colds. The answer is easy — there are many different cold viruses. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus gets into your body, your body works hard to fight against it. Blood rushes to your nose and causes a block in it, so you feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells (细胞). You may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. Some people might have chicken soup to help them get over the cold and some take medicine to stop different symptoms (症状) of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but it takes only about seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.
1.When is it easy for many people to catch a cold?
2.How many examples does the writer give to prove (证明) your body works hard to fight against viruses?
3.Why do people have a runny nose when having a cold?
4.How long does it usually take to get over a cold?
5.What do you often do to deal with colds?

Today, people care about their health much more than before and want to get a great body shape. This is because when we are in good shape, we feel fit and healthy. We feel good about ourselves and feel much more confident than before. When you want to be healthy, just working out will not do. You have to take care of your overall (全面的) health by eating proper food, doing the right kind of exercises and keeping yourself happy.
The first thing that needs to be done is to reduce the intake (摄入) of calories (卡路里). The calorie content (含量) of each meal should not be higher than 400 calories. Ideally, one is well advised to have three meals in a day. There should be a gap of at least three hours between each meal. Fresh vegetables, fruits, egg whites, fish, chicken breast are some of the foods that can provide you with the right nutrients and help you get in shape at the same time.
Many people make the mistake of avoiding strength training when they are trying for weight loss. They think that strength training will increase their body weight. However, this is not true. Be careful not to over-exercise in order to lose weight fast. Too much exercises can cause injury to you.
Drinking 8-10 glasses of water can help in reducing fat. If you drink ice-cold water, then it will burn out some extra calories from your body. This is because when you are drinking cold water, your body needs to raise the temperature of the water up to your body temperature. In this process, almost one calorie of fat gets burned from the body. Drinking a glass of water before a meal will be helpful in this regard.
You can get a healthy body only if your mind is away from stress. Stress can also lead to other health problems like high blood pressure, upset stomach, headaches, etc. For all these reasons, special efforts need to be taken to relax your mind.
1.Is working out enough for people to keep healthy?
2.How long should people wait between meals?
3.Why can’t people over-exercise?
4.After reading this passage, what will you do to have overall health? (至少两条)
Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects (对象), were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting (输送) the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows, running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear warm and light clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
1.Do people like to run in cold weather?
2.Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
3.How do people lose heat?
4.Why is it the most important to wear the right clothing for people running in cold condition?
5.What is the main purpose in writing this passage?

【答案】1.In spring or fall. 2.Three/3. 3.To stop virus entering cells. 4.About one week. 5.Drink lots of hot water.
