Hey, Captain Lim,
First of all, I would like to say that it is a great pleasure to be able to speak to an experienced pilot who knows what life is like in the sky.
I am a 13-year-old girl and for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a pilot. I would spend hours watching the planes at the airport take off from the runway. I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored (探索) before.
I just love airplanes and flying. The idea to fly people around the world always makes me excited. I’m just not sure if it’s the right job for me. My dad says I need to make a quick decision because now is the right time to start training. It’s true. I want to start early. It sounds funny, but I want to be young and energetic when I’m flying a Qantas Boeing 737, or even an A380!
I have so many questions about it—do you get paid well? I want to have a pretty good income (收入). I want to have a big family and house when I grow up. And it will need a lot of money. Is it fun? Is it safer than being a doctor or a teacher? Will I regret it? I hate regretting things I’ve done. Is it really hard? I’m also a girl, so will I be looked down upon?
And I would also like to know, if I definitely (明确地) want to become a pilot, where and when I should start training if I want to start early.
Thanks so much, Captain!
Regards,
Mary Anne

Career planning is an important part of personal growth. It helps us know what we want to do in the future and how to achieve our goals. Here are some steps to make a career plan.
First, understand yourself. Think about your interests, skills and strengths. For example, if you like working with children and are good at communicating, you might consider becoming a teacher. If you are interested in science and enjoy doing experiments, a career in research could be a good choice.
Second, research different careers. Learn about the requirements, working conditions and development prospects (前景) of different jobs. You can read books, search online or talk to people who work in the fields you are interested in. This can help you make a more informed decision.
Third, set short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals are things you want to achieve in one or two years, such as learning a new skill or getting a certificate (证书). Long-term goals are what you want to achieve in five or ten years, like becoming a manager or starting your own business.
Fourth, make an action plan. Once you have set your goals, you need to figure out what steps to take to achieve them. For example, if your goal is to become a doctor, you need to study hard in school, get into a good medical college and complete your training.
Finally, review and adjust (调整) your plan regularly. As you grow and change, your interests and goals may also change. It’s important to review your career plan from time to time and make adjustments if necessary.
1.What is an important part of personal growth?
2.What should you think about when understanding yourself?
3.How can you research different careers?
4.What are short-term goals?
5.Why should you review and adjust your plan regularly?

Choosing a career (事业) is a big choice, but it doesn’t have to be scary. Some people already know what they want to do, while others need more time. The key is to find work that matches your interests and skills—you’ll be happier doing what you love.
Think about what excites you most. Do you like solving problems and working with numbers? You might want to work in technology or engineering. If you are willing to help people, try fields like healthcare or teaching. However, it’s not only about what you like—your skills matter too. Are you great at talking to people and understanding their needs? Or are you better at solving puzzles and using technology? Some people are amazing at maths and science, while others are born with creativity and communication.
You don’t just want a job you’re good at. You also want one that you enjoy. When you join love and skills together, your work becomes less of a “job” and more of something you really enjoy. Moreover, when you love what you do, it’s easier to feel happier at the end of the day.
But it’s also important to think about the job market and chances. If you live in a place full of technology companies, jobs in programming or engineering may be more suitable. One more thing: your career path isn’t set in stone. People change careers all the time! It’s okay if you start one job and then decide you want to try something new. What’s important is to keep learning and growing along the way.
1.According to the passage, what is the key to finding a satisfying job?
2.If Mike likes solving problems and working with numbers, what work might he do?
3.What does the underlined phrase “set in stone” in Paragraph 4 mean?
4.No matter what job you do, what is important in the writer’s mind?
5.What do you want to be? Why do you think you can do it well?

I was 68 when I first stepped onstage as a stand-up comedian. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. But after the 9/11 terrorist attack, I started to think about trying comedy because I realized that people needed to laugh again. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine (常规流程), and finally collected the courage to get up onstage. That first time was terrifying! I could expect what the audience would think of me the first time they saw me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, and even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. A booking agent said, “Perhaps you were in the wrong place.” As I stepped onstage that first time, people were clearly surprised and doubtful to see an old woman. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were finally laughing properly. After the whole performance, the same agent clapped his hand and presented a bunch of flowers to me, saying “Oh, you were so great.” I was more attracted by this job.
Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody, I’m almost 88 years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
I realize that what I am determined to do is much more than my own personal growth. After a show, people young and old come up to me saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as I am when they reach my age, I’m pleased that I can show others that, as an older person, you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
Last year, I was recognized as the oldest woman stand-up comedian in the world. But I have no plan to stop my comedy work. I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh.
By D’yan Forest
1.Did the audience believe the writer was a great comedian the first time they saw her?
2.According to the passage, how long has the writer been a comedian?
3.Besides personal growth, what other meanings are mentioned for the writer to be such a comedian?
4.The writer of the passage breaks down some stereotypes (刻板印象). List such a role model you know and tell the reasons.

I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored before.
I just love airplanes and flying. The idea to fly people around the world always makes me excited. I’m just not sure if it’s the right job for me. My dad says I need to make a quick decision because now is the right time to start training. It’s true. I want to start early. It sounds funny, but I want to be young and energetic when I'm flying a Qantas Boeing 737, or even an A380!
I'm also a girl, so will I be looked down upon?

根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。
【答案】1.The key is to find work that matches your interests and skills. 2.He might be an engineer/a computer programmer./He might work in technology or engineering. 3.It means unchanged/keeping the same./People don’t change careers all the time. 4.It is important to keep learning and growing along the way. 5.I want to be a teacher, because I am good with kids, and I like to help others.
