She began writing early in life, although the prejudices of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously (匿名). But Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath’s many famous local people and visitors. She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806, Bath was her home. Her deep knowledge of the city is fully seen in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which are largely set in Bath. The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the well-ordered world that she described so well in her novels. Now the pleasure of learning Jane Austen’s Bath can be enhanced (增强) by visiting the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street. Here, in a Georgian town house in the heart of the city, you can find out more about Bath in Jane Austen’s time and the importance of Bath in her life and work. The Centre has been set up with the help and guidance of members of the Jane Austen Society. After your visit to the Centre, you can look round the attractive shop, which offers a huge collection of Jane Austen related books, cards and many specially designed gifts. Jane Austen quizzes are offered to keep the children busy. You can also have walking tours of Jane Austen’s Bath which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian city of Bath. The tour lasts about one and a half hours. The experienced guides will take you to the places where Jane lived, walked and shopped. 4. When did Jane Austen pay two long visits to Bath? A. In her early twenties. B. In her early teens. C. In her late twenties. D. In her late teens. 5. What can we learn about Bath from the passage? A. Bath has greatly changed since Jane Austen’s death. It is indicated that the Jane Austen Centre ________ . A. is a newly built building to attract tourists B. is distant from the central area of the city C. provides visitors with products about Jane Austen D. was set up by the Jane Austen Society independently 7. It takes you about one and a half hours ________. A. to get to the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street B. to buy Jane Austen-related books, cards and gifts C. to find a guide to take you to the Centre D. to look around the city of Bath on foot 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775(简·奥斯汀,著名的英国作家,1775年12月16日出生在汉普郡的史蒂文顿)”和第二段“She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806(在十八世纪的最后五年和1801年至1806年期间,她曾两次长期访问这里)”可知,她是在20岁早期两次长时间访问巴斯的,故选A。 根据第二段“The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the well-ordered world that she described so well in her novels.(这座城市在很大程度上仍和简·奥斯汀(Jane Austen)所熟知的模样别无二致,街道与公共建筑中保留着她曾在小说里生动描绘的那个秩序井然的世界。)” 根据倒数第二段“After your visit to the Centre, you can look round the attractive shop, which offers a huge collection of Jane Austen related books, cards and many specially designed gifts.(参观完中心后,你可以参观一下迷人的商店,那里有大量与简·奥斯汀有关的书籍、卡片和许多特别设计的礼物。)” 根据最后一段“You can also have walking tours of Jane Austen’s Bath, which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian city of Bath. The tour lasts about one and a half hours.(你也可以徒步游览简·奥斯汀的巴斯,这是一个了解简·奥斯汀的好方法,也可以探索美丽的乔治时代城市巴斯。这次旅行大约持续一个半小时。)”可知,徒步游览Bath一地大概要需要一个半小时的时间。故选D。 C There seems to be a lot of talk these days about what is fair, and what is not. Most people tend to believe life should be fair. Some of the 99% seem to believe life has somehow treated them unfairly, and some of the 1% feel life hasn't treated them fairly enough. My questions are these: What is fairness? Is life fair? Should life be fair? We clearly have no choice about how we come into this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we get. Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind. Our state in life cannot, or at least should not, be blamed on our parents, our teachers, or our society — it’s largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt. Life is full of examples of the uneducated, the mentally and physically challenged people born into war-torn areas, who could have complained about life being unfair, but who instead chose a different path. Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution rather than complaint. I agree that challenges exist. I agree that many have an uphill battle due to the severity of the challenges they face. What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world. Rules and orders don’t create fairness, but people's desire and determination can work around most life challenges. It doesn’t matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. A friend of mine came to this country from Africa in his late teens, barely spoke the language, drove a cab while working his way through college, and is now the president of a technology services company. Stories such as this are all around us — they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate the courage to overcome the mindset of fairness. 8. What is the primary purpose of the passage? A. To promote “efforts over complaint”. B. To stress the importance of fairness. C. To share an inspiring story of a friend. D. To prove that there are no miracles. 9. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the mindset of fairness? A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Sympathetic. D. Indifferent. 10. What opinion may the writer agree to? A. Most of us can have impacts on the results we achieve. B. Our background determines our choices. C. People’s desire and determination create unfairness. D. We should depend on fairness to solve all problems. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Fairness Is Justice. B. Life Is Not Fair — Deal With It. C. Fairness Comes First. D. Cry for Fairness. A 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we get.(我一直认为,虽然我们无法控制生命的开始,但我们大多数人都有能力影响我们得到的结果。)”,第三段“Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution rather than complaint.(不管他们面临什么挑战,他们都有选择贡献而不是抱怨的性格。)和最后一段“They do, however, demonstrate the courage to overcome the mindset of fairness.(然而,他们确实展示了克服公平心态的勇气。)”可知,文章主要是在提倡“努力而非抱怨”。故选A。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind.(公平是一种心态,而且大多数情况下是一种不健康的心态。)”和最后一段“They do, however, demonstrate the courage to overcome the mindset of fairness.(然而,他们确实展示了克服公平心态的勇气。)”可知,作者对公平的心态持批评的态度。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we get.(我一直认为,虽然我们无法控制生命的开始,但我们大多数人都有能力影响我们得到的结果。)”可知,作者可能同意“我们大多数人都能对我们取得的结果产生影响”这个观点。故选A。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。文章主要讨论了公平的话题,作者认为公平是一种心态,而且大多数情况下是一种不健康的心态,人们不应该将生活中的状态归咎于父母、老师或社会,而应该更多地基于自己的选择和态度,所以文章最好的标题应该是“生活不公平——接受它”。故选B。 D Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much. This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort. The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’ re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work — it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason it not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring. In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit. So how can students manage to study efficiently? One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished=time spent× intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time. 12. What is a pseudo-worker described as? A. A poor monitor. B. An effective learner. C. A damaging cheater. D. An inefficient learner. 13. What may result from pseudo-working? A. Distracting straight-A students. B. Finishing task with less time. C. Mental exhaustion with little achievement. D. Decreased IQ. 14. What does the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 5. mean? A. Longest. B. Best. C. Least. D. Shortest. 15. Why does the author mention the formula in the last paragraph? A. To show the benefit of working hard. B. To emphasize the importance of concentration. C. To prove the necessity of accomplishing work. D. To explain the reason for spending much time. 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了伪勤奋的现象,即学生看似努力学习,但因缺乏专注而效率低下,导致时间浪费和精力消耗,并对比了全优学生的高效方法,强调专注强度对学习效果的重要性。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.(伪勤奋式学习者看起来和感觉上都很努力——他们花很长时间在图书馆里,不怕工作到深夜——但由于缺乏注意力和专注力,他们实际上并没有完成多少工作。)”可知,伪勤奋式学习者被描述为低效的学习者。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.(这些学生把自己置于令人分心的环境中,坚持长时间工作,损害了他们大脑清晰有效地思考以完成手头任务的能力。最后,他们事半功倍。)”可知,伪勤奋式学习者可能导致精神疲惫,毫无成就。故选C。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“to maximize the material learned per time unit(最大限度地提高单位时间内学习的材料)”可知,对于学习来说,提高效率非常重要,为了效率的最大化,50分钟的时间应该是“最适合的”或者“最佳的”,所以,“optimal”的意思与Best意义相近。故选B。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段中的“One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished=time spent× intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.(一个关键因素体现在下面这个简单公式中:完成的工作量 = 花费的时间 × 专注程度。 Breaking bad news is never an easy task. ____16____ Therefore, understanding how to break bad news effectively is essential. Before you break bad news, it is important to offer comfort to the person, if appropriate. Make the connection between the identification of the emotions and the cause, and make it clear to the recipient that you get the connection. Do this by acknowledging their response, such as “I can see that you’re really upset and angry.” or “____17____” It is equally crucial to ensure that the setting is both comfortable and private. Avoid breaking bad news in public, where the person may feel exposed and unable to process their emotions. ____18____ Turn off any distracting devices and consider having a supportive third person present if appropriate. ____19____ This allows you to avoid repetition and tailor your message according to the severity and personal relevance of the news — whether it involves the loss of a pet, a job, or a family member. Finally, breaking bad news should not end with the delivery itself. ____20____ Help the person consider what steps to take next, whether it’s planning a memorial or exploring new opportunities. Offer specific assistance, such as accompanying them somewhere or explaining what will happen next. By following these steps, you can break bad news in a way that reduces distress and helps the recipient begin to cope. A. This is clearly a terrible shock. B. Have a clear plan for follow-up support. C. I am sorry to tell you what has happened. D. Try to determine what the person already knows. E. Choose your words to avoid discomfort and privacy invasion. F. Instead, choose a quiet place with minimal chance of interruption. G. But breaking it at the wrong time or in the wrong way can be even worse. 【答案】16. G 17. A 18. F 19. D 20. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何有效地传达坏消息。 【16题详解】 上文“Breaking bad news is never an easy task.(传达坏消息从来都不是一件容易的事。)”表明了传达坏消息的难度。下文“Therefore, understanding how to break bad news effectively is essential.(因此,了解如何有效地传达坏消息是至关重要的。)”强调了了解如何有效传达坏消息的重要性。由此可知,空处应该是一个转折句,引出下文要讨论的内容,即虽然传达坏消息很难,但如果在错误的时间或以错误的方式传达,情况可能会更糟。选项G“但在错误的时间或以错误的方式传达坏消息可能会更糟”符合语境,与上文形成转折,与下文形成因果关系。故选G。 【17题详解】 上文“Make the connection between the identification of the emotions and the cause, and make it clear to the recipient that you get the connection. Do this by acknowledging their response, such as “I can see that you’re really upset and angry.” (将情绪的识别与原因联系起来,并让接受者清楚你理解这种联系。通过承认他们的反应来做到这一点,比如“我能看出你真的很沮丧和生气。”)”描述了如何通过承认对方的反应来建立联系,并给出了一个例子。由此可知,空处应该是一个与上文例子相似的句子,用于进一步说明如何承认对方的反应。选项A“这显然是一个可怕的打击”符合语境,与上文例子形成并列关系,都是对对方反应的承认和描述。故选A。 【18题详解】 上文“Avoid breaking bad news in public, where the person may feel exposed and unable to process their emotions.(避免在公共场合传达坏消息,因为在那里,这个人可能会感到暴露,无法处理自己的情绪。)”强调了避免在公共场合传达坏消息的重要性。下文“Turn off any distracting devices and consider having a supportive third person present if appropriate.(关掉任何分散注意力的设备,并在适当的情况下考虑让一个支持性的第三者在场。)”给出了在传达坏消息时应该采取的一些具体措施。由此可知,空处应该是一个过渡句,引出下文要讨论的传达坏消息的合适场所和措施。选项F“相反,选择一个安静的地方,尽量减少被打断的机会”符合语境,与上文形成对比,强调了选择合适场所的重要性,并与下文措施形成呼应。故选F。 【19题详解】 下文“This allows you to avoid repetition and tailor your message according to the severity and personal relevance of the news — whether it involves the loss of a pet, a job, or a family member.(这可以让你避免重复,并根据消息的严重程度和个人相关性来调整你的信息——无论它涉及失去宠物、工作还是家庭成员”,这句话描述了根据消息的严重程度和个人相关性来调整信息的好处。)” 【20题详解】 上文“Finally, breaking bad news should not end with the delivery itself.(最后,传达坏消息不应该以传达本身结束。)” 下文“Help the person consider what steps to take next, whether it’s planning a memorial or exploring new opportunities. Offer specific assistance, such as accompanying them somewhere or explaining what will happen next.(帮助这个人考虑下一步要采取什么措施,无论是计划纪念活动还是探索新的机会。 I used to believe that friendship was something that happened naturally, like finding a missing puzzle piece. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English literature. School started. I was teaching English literature. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class who were only six years younger than me. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for written word. But the students only threw spitballs (纸团) and whispered dirty words in the back of the classroom. In my opinion, I had thought that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students perfect lecturing. But in fact, humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem to be reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my supervisor, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise. My boss sat in the back of the classroom. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening and went on talking and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I knew I had to face him. After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Inspired by his advice, I determined to make a change the very next day. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair, gazing at me silently. I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which added to my anxiety at that moment. However, my eyes were wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students’ feelings. Almost immediately, a surge of warmth rose inside me. Inspired by his advice, I determined to make a change the very next day. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with what you think about my literature lesson.” Each student cast me a puzzled look. I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say is welcomed!” At this, a ripple of excitement spread through the classroom. The literature class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices. It was at that time that I fully understood that respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference. 词汇激活 行为类 ①盯着:gaze at/stare at ②宣布:announce/declare ③鼓励:inspire/encourage 情绪类 ①焦虑:anxiety/worry ②迷惑的:puzzled/confused 【点睛】[高分句型1] He handed me an envelope, which added to my anxiety at that moment. B Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775, and died on July 18, 1817. You can also have walking tours of Jane Austen’s Bath, which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian city of Bath. B. The city has changed as much as Jane Austen knew it. C. Bath remains almost the same as in Jane Austen’s time. D. No changes have taken place in Bath since Jane Austen’s time. 6. It is indicated that the Jane Austen Centre ________ . A is a newly built building to attract tourists B. is distant from the central area of the city C. provides visitors with products about Jane Austen D. was set up by the Jane Austen Society independently 7. It takes you about one and a half hours ________. A. to get to the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street B. to buy Jane Austen-related books, cards and gifts C. to find a guide to take you to the Centre D. to look around the city of Bath on foot C There seems to be a lot of talk these days about what is fair, and what is not. D Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. Breaking bad news is never an easy task. ____16____ Therefore, understanding how to break bad news effectively is essential. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
