Hi David,
I’m a very short person. At school, my classmates often laugh at me and don’t want to play with me. I am very sad about this. What should I do?
Taorui
Hi Taorui,
I feel your pain. I was one of the shorter kids at school and I was overweight too, so I got double the laughs. To make things worse, my brother is really tall and thin! The best thing to do is not let it get to you. This reminds me of the story (that I was named after) of David and Goliath. The small man David has to fight the giant Goliath. He is laughed at. But he beats the giant in the end. It doesn’t matter if you’re tall or short. What matters is your attitude (态度). Believe in yourself and don’t take kids laughing at you too seriously. If you can laugh it off and show you’re confident, they can’t get to you. And remember, someone who works hard is not a small person. But those who laugh at others to make them feel small are truly the small ones.

If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don’t actually touch each other. There are few gaps between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown shyness (树冠羞避).”
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it’s a tree’s way to stay healthy. Trees are always fighting with each other for sunlight and water. By keeping a certain distance from each other, they reduce the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees. Leaves are very important, as they help trees get sunlight and water. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps stop harmful insects and diseases from spreading. “Tree sicknesses can come from insects or even be the insects themselves,” Lowman says. “By separating themselves from others, trees protect themselves like we do when we keep our distance from sick people.”
Crown shyness mostly happens in tropical (热带的) trees, but the lessons are also true for other trees. Trees with more space grow bigger and stronger. Lowman says we should take good care of trees, just like we take care of a rose garden. Healthy trees give us better shade, and they clean the water better. “The healthier the forest, the more benefits the owner will get,” says Lowman. “When a tree gets sick, don’t just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds,” the expert adds.
So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbours.
13. How does the author tell us the trees’ way to stay healthy?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By giving an example.
14. Why do trees keep their leaves from touching other trees?
A. Trees are always fighting for sunlight and water, so they grow taller.
B. Trees should be kept at a distance from sick people.
C. Trees need to stay away from insects and diseases.
D. Trees grow bigger and stronger in tropical areas.
15. What does the underlined word “shade” mean?
A. Cover. B. Wood. C. Advice. D. Energy.
16. What could we possibly learn from trees’ crown shyness?
A. Keep everyone healthy by sharing space wisely.
B. Take good care of a rose garden and sick trees.
C. Go to the forests and find something interesting.
D. Try to be good neighbours wherever you are.

Many people think they need to walk 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy. We often see this number on smartwatches and health apps. ___17___
A new study says you might not need that many steps. In fact, just walking 7,000 steps a day could be enough. ___18___ They found that people who walked 7,000 steps a day had better health than those who walked only 2,000 steps. So why do so many people try to walk 10,000 steps a day?
___19___ It began with a Japanese ad in the 1960s. A company was selling a stepcounter (计步器) called “Manpo-kei” (meaning “10,000 steps metre”). The number sounded nice, so it quickly became popular. Today, many fitness devices (健身设备) still use it as a goal. But 7,000 steps may be easier for most people. The study even found that walking 4,000 steps a day was good for health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says children aged 5 to 17 should do at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. ___20___ Just try to move more when you can!
A. Well, this idea didn’t come from science!
B. Scientists studied 160,000 people worldwide.
C. But for some people, walking that much is too hard.
D. Forget 10,000 steps, try 7,000 every day to keep healthy.
E. So maybe don’t worry too much about your number of steps.
