C
Last week, I went to a sports-and-nature day camp, and almost everything was fantastic: the activities, the food, and almost all the kids. The reason I say “almost” is because there was one girl, Elizabeth, who seemed to break up the wonderful time.
We saw her sitting alone, so we invited Elizabeth to have lunch together. But she refused. When we invited her to play volleyball, Elizabeth said, “If I wanted to play volleyball, I would already be playing volleyball.” After a few unfriendly answers like that, I decided to steer clear of her.
However, our teacher paired (配对) Elizabeth with me in a nature hike. At first, no one said a word until we saw a bird in the middle of the road.
“Oh, no!” said Elizabeth. “I think its wing is hurt! Poor bird! It must be in pain, like my granddad.”
“Your granddad?” I asked.
Elizabeth replied, “He fell and broke his leg the day camp started. He’s still in hospital and is in so much pain.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I said.
Elizabeth shook her head, “I’m sorry. For some reason, whenever I get really upset, I act impolitely. I guess I just want to be alone.”
“I get it,” I said. “I don’t always know how to deal with it when I’m feeling down.”
After that, I finally knew that Elizabeth was not unfriendly but really needed privacy (独处). Maybe she was going through a hard time and just didn’t know how to deal with it, so sometimes we can keep our distance from others properly.
11. What made the writer unhappy?
A. The hurt bird. B. The terrible food.
C. The boring activities. D. A girl’s unfriendly answers.
12. What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of” mean in Paragraph 2?

13. What happened on the writer’s hiking trip?
A. He broke his leg seriously.
B. He fought with Elizabeth.
C. He met a bird with a hurt wing.
D. He saw Elizabeth playing volleyball with other kids.
14. Why did Elizabeth act impolitely?
A. Because she liked being alone.
B. Because she didn’t like hiking.
C. Because she didn’t like the writer and his friends.
D. Because her grandfather was in hospital and she was upset.
15. What is the best title of the text?

Orville and Emilie started for home while Chester continued to skate. But there was only one problem. His big ears were getting cold! Chester wore his wool scarf around his head to keep his ears warm, but the wool was too thick and scratchy (粗糙的). He thought there must be a better way. How could he keep his ears warm?
________ He liked taking things apart to see how they worked and how to improve them. He knew he could think of something to keep his ears warm. Then he came up with an idea. What if he only covered his ears but his head remained uncovered? Chester set out to design it in his mind. He thought about shapes, considered structure, and decided on materials.
Then he found two loops of wire (金属线圈) and shaped them into two egg-shaped objects. He also used fur (毛皮) to cover the wire loops. He called it ear protectors.
Chester was excited. He quickly put them on and went skating. This time, some schoolmates were skating on the ice. 【18题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“He liked taking things apart to see how they worked and how to improve them.”可知后文在描述他善于拆解物品并改进,横线处应填入概括他擅长解决问题的句子,所以“Chester always had a good mind for solving problems.”符合语境逻辑。

To the South Pole (南极)
It’s Day 45 of our expedition (探险) to the South Pole. This must be one of the most difficult days I’ve ever had. We’re finally just a few miles away from our destination (目的地).
This whole trip has been very difficult. We’ve been walking around 12 hours a day and I’m very tired. Whenever I was almost ready to give up, I tried to think of how Roald Amundsen overcame his difficulties more than 100 years ago.
This journey has been special even though at times it felt like it was never going to end. First, it’s not easy to move over the snow or ice. Sometimes, it’s hard to see more than a few meters because of the white snow and the snowstorms. Luckily, we have planned the routes (路线) well.
Another challenge of the journey is preparing good food. Sometimes, we just have some nuts and sweets since there’s no time to stop for a proper meal. Even so, we’ve always made sure that we eat the right food so that we can continue our journey with enough energy.
I think the hardest part is protecting our feet. It would be awful if we couldn’t get to the Pole because of foot or other injuries (受伤). Our team doctor has always treated our injuries well and has kept us staying healthy.
Well, we made it! How wonderful it feels to finally be standing at the South Pole! This expedition has taught me that we need to overcome all kinds of difficulties before we can succeed and that we should never give up.

A Letter to Myself
Dear myself,
How time flies! It’s time to say goodbye to your junior high school life.
Looking back, I have made great progress in my studies and had a good time with my classmates. I still remember winning the English speech contest, which made me take pride in myself. However, I also made some mistakes and had trouble with math. But those bitter memories taught me a lot. Now I feel thankful to my teachers and parents for their help and encouragement. Though I am a little regretful about the time I wasted, I will keep going and work even harder in the future.
Wish you all the best, my dear self.
Yours,

A. Because she liked being alone.
B. Because she didn’t like hiking.
C. Because she didn’t like the writer and his friends.
D. Because her grandfather was in hospital and she was upset.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Keep a Distance B. Be a Friendly Man
C. Spend a Wonderful Time D. Help Friends as You Can
