Amid the rush of busy programs, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude. Each day brings new smiles, creativity, and connections that remind me why I love what I do. Little Moments, Big Smiles At the top of my list is the enthusiastic kids who greet me every day with big waves and cheerful “Ms. Jessica!” Some days, there’s even a soft hug — or a new drawing to add to my ever-growing collection of crayon masterpieces. Those small gestures never fail to brighten my day. Volunteers Who Make Magic Happen I’m also deeply thankful for our outstanding volunteers — the ones who quietly jump in notice what needs to be done, and do it with a smile. For example, they make decorations for Summer Reading events and guide children through trying crafts. Through it all, I can always count on their energy, kindness, and enthusiasm. The Small Things That Shine There are so many other things that make me grateful: The parents who whisper “thank you” as they gather coats and glitter-covered projects after a program. Moments of encouragement from colleagues — a note, a smile, or a simple “You’ve got this.” Taking Time to Be Thankful This November, I encourage you to make your own “Library Gratitude List”. What small things make your days brighter? What moments remind you why you chose this work? Write them down, share them, or keep them close — you’ll discover just how much joy they bring when you take time to notice. 1. What do the kids often do to greet the author? A. Give a gift. B. Draw a picture. C. Hug tightly. D. Cheer enthusiastically. 2. Which group gives an incredible amount of support to the author’s work? A. Parents. B. Children. C. Volunteers. D. Colleagues. 3. Why does the author suggest making a “Library Gratitude List”? A. To record daily busy work. B. To find simple pleasure in work. C. To spread working experience. D. To show respect to colleagues. B Grace Sun, a 16 junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, earned the top prize in the 2024 Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), which drew nearly 2,000 students from all over the world. Society for Science presented Sun $ 75,000 honor for the Innovator Award, which goes to the best first-place project based on the outstanding and innovative research as well as the potential impact of her work. Sun’s research was on building a better organic electrochemical transistor (有机电化学晶体管) that she hopes will be used to develop new electronic devices that could help detect and treat serious illnesses. To overcome the problems that have previously prevented such devices from working well inside the body, Sun developed a new way of treating their organic components, which greatly improved their laboratory performance. Sun’s achievement at the ISEF competition is the evidence to the quality and significance of her research. According to Ian Jandrell, a judging co-chair from Society for Science, Sun’s project stood out as “the number one project, without a doubt.” The judges were impressed by her highly skilled work as well as her ability to accurately practice the research method. While Sun’s success at such a young age is remarkable, it is the result of months of effort and countless hours spent in the lab at the University of Kentucky. Sun’s passion for chemical engineering and her desire to make a real impact on medicine are clear. “Hopefully I can make some sort of commercializable breakthrough, like what I’m trying to do now with these devices,” she said. “If possible, I do want to start a business so that I can get them into the real world in industries to impact more people directly.” In Grace Sun, the scientific community has seen the rising of a promising young talent with the potential to shape the future of biomedical engineering. 4. What is the main function of Grace Sun’s invention? A. To control new medical equipment. B. To analyze the nature of various diseases. C. To prevent disease in the laboratory. D. To improve devices for detecting diseases. 5. What impressed the judges about Sun’s research? A. Its accurate method. B. Its easy operation. C. Its cooperation model. D. Its commercial prospect. 6. Which of the following can best describe Grace Sun? A. Patient and adorable. B. Intelligent and proud. C. Creative and ambitious. D. Innovative and gentle. 7. What is the main topic of the text? A. Sun’s desire to change medical science. B. A teen Innovator Award winner. C. The function of a new electronic device. D. The path to commercialization. C A new island has appeared in the middle of a lake in southeastern Alaska after this land lost contact with a melting glacier NASA satellite images reveal. The land, named Prow Knob, is a small mountain that was formerly surrounded by the Alsek Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park. However, Alsek Glacier has been retreating (退缩) for decades, slowly separating itself from Prow Knob and leaving a growing freshwater lake. A recent satellite image, taken in August, reveals that the glacier has now lost all connection to Prow Knob. Prow Knob provides a clear visual example of how glaciers are thinning and retreating in southeastern Alaska. “Along the coastal plain of southeastern Alaska, water is rapidly replacing ice,” Lindsey Doermann, a science writer, wrote in the statement. “Glaciers in this area are thinning and retreating, with meltwater forming proglacial lakes(冰堰湖) off their fronts. In one of these growing watery expanses, a new island has emerged.” The late glaciologist Austin Post, who took photographs of Alsek in 1960, named Prow Knob after its likeness to the prow (pointed front part of a ship). Post and fellow glaciologist Mauri Pelto, a professor of environmental science at Nichols College in Massachusetts, previously predicted that Alsek Glacier would release Prow Knob in 2020, based on the rate it was retreating between 1960 and 1990. The glacier has therefore clung (抓住) on to its mountain for slightly longer than initially predicted. Many of Earth’s glaciers are retreating as the planet gets warmer due to climate change. Last year was the hottest year for global average temperatures since records began, while 2025 has been marked by a string of record-breaking and near-record-breaking hot months. Glacier ice loss not only exacerbates sea level rise but also threatens freshwater availability, increases the risk of geological disasters and dramatically changes mountain landscapes, according to the study. 8. What caused the emergence of the new island? A. Volcanic activity. B. Heavy rainfall. C. Retreat of glaciers. D. Rising sea levels. 9. How was the actual retreat of Alsek Glacier compared to the experts’ prediction? A. It was faster than anticipated. B. It matched the prediction exactly. C. It changed direction unexpectedly. D. It was slightly slower than predicted. 10. What does the underlined word “exacerbates” in the last paragraph mean? A. Prevents. B. Worsens. C. Enhances. D. Restores. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. The Birth of a New Island in Alaska B. Climate Change and Glacier Melting C. The Impact of the Glacier Retreat D. Alaska’s Changing Landscape D In a lab in Italy volunteers teamed up with iCub, a child-sized robot, to slice a piece of soap using a knife. The task itself was simple. What surprised researchers was what happened afterward: the volunteers’ brains began treating iCub’s hand as if it were their own. The experiment built on what scientists call the near hand effect. When a hand is near an object, the brain pays more attention to it. It prepares to act. Earlier studies showed that this effect can even extend to another person’s hand, but only after working together. The researchers asked if the same could happen with a robot. Volunteers and iCub cut soap together using a knife. Afterward, they did the Posner task, a reaction-time test where images flash on a screen. The results were striking. People responded faster when images appeared near iCub’s hand. Their brains had started to treat the robot’s hand almost like their own. This effect didn’t happen automatically. A study showed that when the robot’s hand was simply placed near the screen, without any shared task, there was no change in attention. Unlike a rubber fake hand, which can trick the brain through sight alone, a robot’s hand needed active cooperation to matter. Attention is paid firstly to the space near another’s hand (human or robot) only after the latter becomes relevant to accomplish a shared goal. The study also measured how people felt about their robotic partner. Questionnaires revealed that the more competent or lively iCub seemed, the stronger the effect became. When participants thought of the robot as capable of feeling or acting intelligently, their brains gave more weight to its presence. The researchers note that iCub’s behavior in the study was pre-programmed. It could not adapt in real time the way humans do. Future robots will need to adjust their actions more flexibly, responding to the pace and style of their human partners. Adaptability could make the connection feel even more natural. 12. What did the earlier studies find about the near hand effect? A. Brain can easily adopt a new tool. B. Human beings often make mistakes. C. Cooperation can reshape attention. D. Brain treats nearby objects as useful. 13. What was the Posner task used to measure? A. Memory of the task steps. B. Speed of responding to images. C. Impact of screen time on brain. D. Recognition of the robot’s hand. 14. Which of the following can also influence the near hand effect? A. The feeling of the robot. B. The duration of shared tasks. C. How fast iCub is moving. D. How the brain sees the robot. 15. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Future research directions. B. Drawbacks of working with robots. C. Programs needed in advance. D. Benefits of human-robot teamwork. Music is more than sound; it is a universal language that transcends (超越) borders and beliefs, connecting us at the core of our shared humanity. ____16____ Science has confirmed what humanity has always sensed: music touches the mind, body, and spirit. ____17____ For example, in ancient Greece, music was considered an essential part of education, and it was believed that it could shape one’s character. Similarly, in many native cultures, music is used in spiritual ceremonies to connect with God and maintain social bonds. In modern times, music continues to be a powerful tool for self-expression and communication. The impact of music on our brains is both fascinating and complex. Among useful gardening things and handy tools was a great professional toolset (工具包), shining under the soft store lights. Dad’s eyes stayed on it. “Wow,” he said quietly, “look at that.” He then looked down at his own old toolbox, which he had used for years. Dad usually wore simple blue overalls (工装裤) and strong boots, repairing things around the house, fixing fences, or working in the garage. He had only one or two nice shirts for special days, and almost all his clothes were plain and long-lasting. “What a fancy kit,” he said, shaking his head. “Who would ever want something like that?” Still, as we walked on, he turned back for one last look. “All those tools are beautiful, but maybe they should display something more useful.” As Father’s Day came near, it seemed that the toolset was soon forgotten. Dad, being very practical, never spent money on costly things. “We have more important things to buy,” he often said. Choosing a gift for him was hard. Whenever we asked, he would only ask for simple things — new gloves, or maybe socks. On our last trip to town before Father’s Day as Mom drove down Oak Street, Dad suddenly said, “Look!” He pointed toward Miller’s Hardware as we passed. “That toolset — it’s gone,” he said, sounding surprised. Shaking his head, he added, “Who would pay so much for a set of tools?” But I could hear a bit of wanting in his voice. Not seeing it there made him feel something lost and regretful. On Father’s Day, a package was delivered to Dad, with a label saying “the Craftsman’s Dream”, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dad was too moved to say a word when he heard this. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026届高三年级12月月考 英语试题 注意事项: 1. 1. Alaska’s Changing Landscape 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“A new island has appeared in the middle of a lake in southeastern Alaska after this land lost contact with a melting glacier, NASA satellite images reveal. The land, named Prow Knob, is a small mountain that was formerly surrounded by the Alsek Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park.(美国宇航局的卫星图像显示,阿拉斯加东南部一处湖泊中央出现了一座新岛屿,其原因是这片陆地与正在消融的冰川断开了连接。这片名为Prow Knob的陆地是一座小山,原本被冰川湾国家公园的阿尔塞克冰川所包围)”以及第二段“A recent satellite image, taken in August, reveals that the glacier has now lost all connection to Prow Knob. Prow Knob provides a clear visual example of how glaciers are thinning and retreating in southeastern Alaska.(最近一张8月份拍摄的卫星图像显示,冰川已经与Prow Knob完全失去了联系。Prow Knob为阿拉斯加东南部冰川变薄和退缩提供了一个清晰的视觉例子)”可知,新岛屿的出现是由于冰川退缩、融水形成湖泊,导致原本与冰川相连的小山丘成为湖中岛。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Post and fellow glaciologist Mauri Pelto, a professor of environmental science at Nichols College in Massachusetts, previously predicted that Alsek Glacier would release Prow Knob in 2020, based on the rate it was retreating between 1960 and 1990. The glacier has therefore clung (抓住) on to its mountain for slightly longer than initially predicted.(Post和同为冰川学家的马萨诸塞州尼科尔斯学院环境科学教授Mauri Pelto此前根据1960年至1990年间的退缩速度预测,Alsek冰川将在2020年释放Prow Knob。因此,冰川在山上停留的时间比最初预测的要稍长一些)”可知,Alsek冰川的实际退缩速度比专家预测的要稍慢一些。故选D项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Glacier ice loss not only exacerbates sea level rise but also threatens freshwater availability...(冰川冰的消失不仅会exacerbates海平面上升,还会威胁到淡水的可用性……)” 文章开篇“A new island has appeared in the middle of a lake in southeastern Alaska after this land lost contact with a melting glacier, NASA satellite images reveal. The land, named Prow Knob, is a small mountain that was formerly surrounded by the Alsek Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park.(美国宇航局的卫星图像显示,阿拉斯加东南部一处湖泊中央出现了一座新岛屿,其原因是这片陆地与正在消融的冰川断开了连接。这片名为Prow Knob的陆地是一座小山,原本被冰川湾国家公园的阿尔塞克冰川所包围)”点明NASA卫星图像发现阿拉斯加因冰川消退而出现“新岛”的现象,随后解释了其形成过程、与预测的对比,并最终联系到气候变化背景下的冰川消退及其广泛影响。全文以“新岛”的形成为核心切入点,展开相关科学讨论。A项“The Birth of a New Island in Alaska(阿拉斯加一座新岛的诞生)”准确概括了这一核心事件,适合做文章标题。故选A项。 D In a lab in Italy, volunteers teamed up with iCub, a child-sized robot, to slice a piece of soap using a knife. 12. C 13. B 14. D 15. On our last trip to town before Father’s Day, as Mom drove down Oak Street, Dad suddenly said, “Look!” He pointed toward Miller’s Hardware as we passed. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 On Father’s Day, a package was delivered to Dad, with a label saying “the Craftsman’s Dream”. He thought it might be something simple — work gloves or a new hat. But when he opened it, he saw “Miller’s Hardware-The Craftsman’s Dream,” just like the one attracted his attention before. He was completely still for a moment, just staring at it surprisingly. Emma and I walked to him and said, “Happy Father’s Day”. Dad was too moved to speak. “the girls saw how much you liked it,” Mom said in a warm voice. “So we got it for you.” Dad was too moved to say a word when he heard this. “Why not open it and have a look, Dad?” I suggested excitedly. He opened the toolset, looking at each carefully chosen tool with care, a thankful smile spreading across his face. When he held a shiny tool under the sunlight, I saw his face filled with pure joy. “Life can be hard,” he said softly, “but I have the most important thing your love.” His heartfelt words felt like a warm and comforting hug. That’s when I know we had given him a perfect Father’s Day. 1】He thought it might be something simple — work gloves or a new hat.(运用了省略that的宾语从句) 【高分句型 2】He was completely still for a moment, just staring at it surprisingly.(运用了现在分词短语作伴随状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
