Mike liked dinosaurs more than anything else in the world. He also believed that there was an amazing dinosaur bone under the ground of his own village. His dream was to be the first person to find it.
One summer morning, Mike was exploring (勘査) in a field near a river. His two friends Fern and Pepe were running toward him with a colorful kite. Mike enjoyed playing with his friends and began to fly the kite with them. As he ran, he fell to the ground, “I caught my left foot on this grey object,” he said.
“A rock.” said Fern. Mike looked at it carefully, “It can’t be a rock,” he said excitedly.
“Let me pull it out,” said Pepe. “No,” said Mike. “It’s better to leave the object right here.”
Mike and the boys ran to school to tell their teacher. The teacher called the paleontologist’s office. The next day, a paleontologist came to examine the object. “It could be a dinosaur bone,” he said. Soon, many paleontologists came and more bones were found. The toothbrush is a common thing that most people use every day, but how much do you really know about this simple tool? Believe it or not, the toothbrush has a very long and interesting history.
The first toothbrushes were actually small twigs (嫩枝) that people would chew (咀嚼) on one end to soften the bristles (短而硬的纤维). These bristles were then used to clean their teeth.
The first “modern” toothbrushes were made in China around 1498. These toothbrushes were made of pig hair and were much more comfortable to use than the twigs. In 1780, William Addis of England came up with the idea of making small holes in a bone and putting bristles into the holes. He then fixed the bristles into the small holes in the bone, which served as the handle.. This design worked much better and quickly became very popular. In 1857, the first toothbrush that was produced in large numbers was created by H.N. Wadsworth. The first nylon toothbrush was created in 1938 by DuPont. Nylon bristles were much more effective at cleaning teeth than natural bristles and quickly became the standard (标准).
Today, toothbrushes come in all shapes and sizes and are made from all kinds of materials. You can even buy electric toothbrushes that do all the work for you!
Who would have thought that such a simple tool could have such an interesting history? The next time you search for your toothbrush, take a moment to think about all the people who have used a toothbrush before you and all the people who will use one after you.

Have you ever had lucid (清醒的) dreams? Recent studies suggest that the number of people having them is increasing. Someone having a lucid dream realizes they are dreaming and may from then on “lead” the action. Or they may simply “watch” the dream developing. The sense of awareness (意识) makes it quite lively and true to life. And although the description may seem strange, the process is familiar to many of us.
Studies suggest that the number of people in the Western world experiencing lucid dreams has risen by between 10 and 40 percent since the 1980s. Today, it is so common that probably one in eight of us will have a lucid dream. But still, little is known about what causes lucid dreams or what is behind the rise.
Research carried out at the respected Harvard University in the US shows that the brain is still active during lucid dreams. In fact, the level of the mental (精神的) activity in some parts of the brain is similar to that of a person who is awake. Lucid dreamers seem to have certain personal characteristics. For example, in general, they are quite creative. They are also good at digging deep into problems and going out of their way to solve them. They always believe in personal responsibility.
Our nightmares (噩梦) may show our worries, with the five most common ones—falling, being run after, feeling disabled, being late, and losing a loved one. Men are more likely to have nightmares about fighting or being fired, while hair and tooth loss appear more in women’s nightmares. Research has also found that women have more nightmares than men.
68. What can we know about lucid dreams according to Paragraph l?
A. We know nothing about their process. B. Fewer people are having them now.
C. They are very lively dreams. D. They must be led by the dreamers.
69. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A. The cause of lucid dreams remains a mystery. B. The brain is inactive during lucid dreams.
C. Western people don’t have lucid dreams. D. Lucid dreamers have nothing in common.
70. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving reasons.
C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
71. Compared with men, which of the following dreams do women often have?
A. Fighting. B. Being fired. C. Feeling disabled. D. Hair loss.
72. Where is the text most probably from?
A. A news report. B. A storybook. C. A sports poster. D. A science magazine.

A. The cause of lucid dreams remains a mystery. B. The brain is inactive during lucid dreams.
C. Western people don’t have lucid dreams. D. Lucid dreamers have nothing in common.
70. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving reasons.
C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
71. Compared with men, which of the following dreams do women often have?
A. Fighting. B. Being fired. C. Feeling disabled. D. Hair loss.

【答案】
例文
Should teenagers under 16 be allowed to ride e-bikes?
Should teenagers under 16 be allowed to ride e-bikes? This serious question is discussed in the class meeting during the “Safety Month For Middle School Students” activity.
Some students think teenagers should be allowed to ride e-bikes. Firstly, it is more convenient for them to go to school. Secondly, it is easy to learn to ride and they don’t need a driver’s license. However, some students disagree with them. They think teenagers lack enough safety awareness. They often break traffic rules on purpose.
In my opinion, I don’t think teenagers under 16 should be allowed to ride e-bikes. They are too young to control themselves well.
