In the remote mountains of Guizhou, China, 72-year-old Li Wei has spent five decades preserving a disappearing art form: the ancient folk songs of the Miao ethnic group. As a child, Li would follow her grandmother to village gatherings, mesmerized by complex melodies passed down through oral tradition. “Those songs were our history books,” she recalls. “But by the 1990s, only a handful of elders could sing them.”
Determined to rescue this cultural heritage, Li began documenting every song she could find. With limited resources, she walked for hours to reach isolated villages, recording lyrics in worn notebooks and capturing tunes on a cassette player. Her persistence faced skepticism. “People asked why I wasted time on ‘old things’ when the young were leaving for cities,” she told The New York Times.
A turning point came in 2010 when Li’s collection was discovered by ethnomusicologists from Beijing Conservatory. This led to digital archiving projects and youth workshops. Today, her efforts have revived over 300 nearly extinct songs. Li’s most significant contribution is the “Echoes of the Clouds” program, which trains local children during summer vacations. “I teach them that these songs carry our ancestors’ wisdom about nature and life,” she explains.
Despite international recognition, Li refuses to leave her village. “My place is here, where the songs were born,” she states. Her resilience has inspired a new generation; three of her students now study ethnomusicology at universities. “Grandma Li showed us that cultural roots give wings to the future,” said 19-year-old participant Yang Min.
24. What motivated Li Wei to preserve Miao folk songs?
A. Government funding for ethnic research. B. Requests from university scholars.
C. Desire for personal fame. D. Her childhood exposure to their cultural significance.
25. How did Li Wei’s work gain wider recognition?
A. By publishing academic papers. B. Via social media campaigns.
C. Through ethnomusicologists’ discovery. D. Through local children’s performances.
26 What does the “Echoes of the Clouds” program emphasize?
A. Training professional musicians. B. Passing on cultural wisdom.
C. Attracting tourism revenue. D. Modernizing traditional melodies.
27. What does the word “resilience” (paragraph 4) most likely mean?
A. Financial success. B. Community influence.
C. Persistent determination. D. Artistic talent.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. C

If I have a goal in life, it isn’t to be driving a Rolls-Royce. It’s to be giving away more than $1,000,000 a year and having an impact on people’s lives. I have the success today because I always had to work for what I wanted. I grew up accustomed to risks and disappointments, so I was used to moving forward, no matter what.
In 2008, I went to Los Angeles where I tried to get hired as an agent, an analyst and a financial broker. Unfortunately, all these doors slammed in my face. The world’s economy was in a bad state, so I knew I would have to do a little spinning of my own.
Youth involves a certain innocence but also perseverance. The word “can’t” wasn’t in my vocabulary. I partnered with a friend buying distressed multifamily properties around Houston. Even though we were enthusiastic and backed with start-up sums, I didn’t make a deal work. My friend moved on to other projects. Alone, I put all my money into the next real-estate project. I put the time in, I dreamed it, but once again the deal fell through. Two months later, though, the deal came back around. That was when the path opened, luck changed, and I was ready to form my own company. I haven’t looked back. Only ahead.
I’m now able to give back to communities and causes. I donate about $500,000 a year, much of that going to research to cure rare diseases. We also support a lot of services for disadvantaged children in Houston and other places.
I have always been someone who can see the big picture and have never been distracted by things that get in the way. There are lessons to be learned, and the biggest of those is to keep going. You may have to change the path, but always keep that vision in front of you.

A. look for a part-time job independently
B. make his contributions to the economy
C. give in to the disappointing reality
D. be self-employed to develop his career
30. Which quality of the author is not shown in the passage?

The rock group Counting Crows were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows can indeed count, according to a recent research publication. Results show crows have counting capacities near those of human toddlers (学步期儿童), says Diana Liao, a researcher in neurobiology at the University of Tübingen. “We think this is the first time this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.
Crows don’t appear to be capable of symbolic counting, in which numbers are associated with a particular symbol. This skill is still thought to be unique to humans. Instead, the birds are able to count by controlling the number of vocalizations (发声) they produce to correspond to associated cues — just like young children who have yet to master symbolic counting often do. Scientists have long suspected that some nonhuman species might also have the ability to count by controlling the number of their vocalizations but lacked evidence.
In the new study, Liao and her colleagues ran experiments with three carrion crows in a carefully controlled laboratory setting. They presented the birds with randomly ordered cues, four of which were visual — colored Arabic numbers appearing on a touch screen — and four of which were sound-based, including a guitar tone and a drumroll. The birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each cue. If they got it right, they received a worm. If not, they received a time-out. When the birds made errors, they tended to make errors close to the target number — a phenomenon referred to as the numerical distance effect. After receiving 166 to 189 training sessions, all the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations at a level higher than chance.
Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist, says the new paper is “excellent”. Counting abilities in birds and mammals represent “a spectacular case of convergent brain evolution (趋同脑进化) where both groups came up with virtually the same solution to cognitive challenges posed by life on Earth. As a result, crows learn, remember, plan, act and make mistakes as toddlers do.”
32. What do the results of the research show about crows?
A. Crows use vocalizations to communicate.
B. Crows are known for forming rock bands.
C. Crows are able to distinguish different quantities.
D. Crows rely on visual signals to interpret surroundings.
33. How did Liao and her team conduct the experiment with crows?
A. By observing crows in the wild.
B. By teaching crows to recognize numbers.
C. By comparing crows’ behavior to that of toddlers.
D. By training crows through visual and sound clues.
34. What can be inferred from Onur Güntürkün’s explanation?
A. Crows show advanced cognitive abilities like other intelligent animals.
B. Birds and mammals found varied ways to address cognitive challenges.
C. Crows developed their counting skills by interacting with other species.
D. Birds and mammals developed similar counting abilities through evolution.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The influence of crows on popular culture is discussed.
B. Crows are the first non-human species proven to count.
C. Research on crows reveals insights into animal intelligence.
D. Exploring animal intelligence is vital for understanding behavior.

第二节、读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Just at that moment Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.

The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings

24 What motivated Li Wei to preserve Miao folk songs?
26. What does the “Echoes of the Clouds” program emphasize?
A. Training professional musicians. B. Passing on cultural wisdom.
C. Attracting tourism revenue. D. Modernizing traditional melodies.
27. What does the word “resilience” (paragraph 4) most likely mean?
A. Financial success. B. Community influence.
C. Persistent determination. D. Artistic talent.

29. By saying “do a little spinning of my own” in the second paragraph, the author probably means he would ______.
A. look for a part-time job independently
B. make his contributions to the economy
C. give in to the disappointing reality
D. be self-employed to develop his career
30. Which quality of the author is not shown in the passage?
A. Perseverance. B. Optimism.
C. Innocence. D. Kindness.
31 Which one is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Saying No to “Turning Back”
B. Tips for a Successful Business
C. Jumping over Economic Downturns
D. Giving back to others matters

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
