Night at the Museum at the National Natural History Museum of China
On August 1, the National Natural History Museum of China launched a month-long “Night at the Museum” program (6 p.m. — 9 p.m. daily till Sept 11). Combining lantern-making tradition with natural evolution themes is the highlight of this year’s event. A series of featured activities are arranged as follows:
Family Sleepover Adventure (¥450 per adult; ¥260 per kid)
Every Friday and Saturday, a night adventure is available for children aged 6 — 12 with their families. The Africa-themed activity includes a costume concert decorated with lanterns and exploration of tropical herbivore (植食动物) migrations, running from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day.
Note: Family package can enjoy 10% discount.
Natural Craft Workshop (¥199 individual)
Visitors can join hands-on crafting sessions themed on prehistoric creatures and plants. With guidance from instructors, participants make related lanterns using eco-friendly materials, taking their handmade works home as souvenirs.
Special Dinosaur Exhibition (free)
Co-hosted with Zigong Dinosaur Museum, it displays about 60 precious fossils, including the world’s first discovered sauropod bony tail hammer (蜥脚类恐龙尾锤化石) and Sichuan Giganotosaurus (巨棘龙) skin fossil.
Interactive Lectures and Guided Tours (¥199 individual)

When my grandfather passed away, I inherited his old violin. As a practical engineering student, I saw it only as a broken object — cracked wood, loose strings — and planned to display it as a decorative piece. That changed when I found a faded 1958 recital (独奏) program inside the case.
Driven by curiosity, I took it to Mr. Chen, a luthier. He examined it not with pity, but with keen interest. “Ah,” he said, “this isn’t a ruin. It’s a story waiting to continue. True restoration isn’t about making it look new, but about helping it find its voice again.” Inspired, I decided to learn the process myself.
Under Mr. Chen’s patient guidance, I began. The work was a lesson in humility and slow care. My engineering mind, used to speed, had to learn patience — cleaning dirt, mixing traditional glue, mending cracks with precision. Frustration was frequent.
One quiet afternoon, as I struggled to fit a small but vital piece, Mr. Chen said softly, “Remember, you’re not just fixing wood and string. You’re rekindling a story.” His words shifted something within me. This was no longer a technical project. I imagined my grandfather as a young man, perhaps in a room like this, pouring his hopes into this very instrument, the music a part of his dreams.
The final day arrived. With careful hands, I tightened the last string and lifted the bow. The first note was hesitant, carrying a faint roughness of age and repair, yet it was unmistakably alive. In that moment, holding the violin that now felt intimately familiar, a deep understanding settled within me. I had not merely restored an object; I had built a fragile but enduring bridge to a past I now cherished. The most significant repair, I realized, had happened within me — cultivating patience, respect for history, and the quiet joy of returning voice to a silenced story.
4. Why did the author initially plan to treat the violin as a decoration?
A. Because it was ruined, never to be played again.
B. Because he lacked the musical skill to appreciate it.
C. Because he saw no practical use for a broken instrument.
D. Because his grandpa would have wanted a decorative display.
5. What can be inferred about Mr. Chen from the text?
A. He viewed violin restoration as a purely technical task.
B. He shared a personal history with the author’s grandfather.
C. He was primarily motivated by making money from repairs.
D. He appreciated the historical and emotional value of old instruments.
6. The word “rekindling” in paragraph 4 probably means _________.
A. reviving a lost memory B. repairing an old object
C. recording a past event D. rewriting a family history
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A bridge to the past B. Lessons in Patience
C. The Violin’s New Voice D. A Faded Recital Program
C
To reduce carbon emissions and slow down global warming, new buildings must meet high environmental standards. In the UK, this goal has been discussed for many years, especially since the government promised to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. However, despite the urgency of the climate crisis, many new homes still lack basic energy-saving features. This situation highlights the need for stronger action to make housing development truly sustainable.
England plans to build 1.5 million new homes. But previous decisions — such as the removal of key environmental rules — have led to houses being built without essentials like solar panels. Future housing standards are expected to include solar technology, though there is uncertainty about how strict these rules will be. Experts suggest that all new homes should include solar panels, battery storage to reduce pressure on the grid (电网), and high-quality insulation (隔热) to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy bills.
Domestic heating is an even bigger challenge. While the use of renewable energy is growing, reducing dependence on fossil fuels remains critical. Unfortunately, recent decisions have allowed wood-burning stoves and may continue to permit gas boilers in new homes. However, choosing gas boilers instead of heat pumps (热泵) is harmful to the environment and economically short-sighted. Many European countries have adopted heat pump technology, which reduces carbon emissions and could create new green jobs in the UK if supported by appropriate policies.
A major issue is that large construction companies appear to have significant influence over housing policy. Developers often aim to reduce costs and maximize profits. However, long-term environmental goals are considered important. Refitting heat pumps and insulation costs far more than putting them at the beginning. Besides, some natural habitats cannot be replaced once destroyed. Sustainable housing is essential for current energy needs and for the health of the planet.
8. What does the author imply about the past efforts on sustainable housing?
A. They faced strong opposition. B. They were insufficiently carried out.
C. They were ignored by the public. D. They led to energy-saving adoption.
9. New homes in England are expected to _________.
A. reduce energy cost B. remove solar panels
C. lower battery storage D. follow flexible standards
10. Why is domestic heating considered a bigger challenge?
A. Gas boilers are cheaper to use. B. It still relies heavily on fossil fuels.
C. Solar panels require advanced technology. D. New homes lack space for heating systems.
11. What concern is raised in the last paragraph?
A. Adopting green technology is more expensive.
B. The government ignores environmental issues.
C. Cost-driven decisions may harm future sustainability.
D. Developers prefer to build homes near natural habitats.
D
When Sarah, a book lover logged into her neighborhood’s AI-powered app, she never expected an algorithm (算法) to spark a lifelong friendship. The app, which analyzes residents’ hobbies and interaction patterns, suggested she connect with Mike, a fellow poetry enthusiast who lived just three blocks away — yet they’d never crossed paths in five years of living nearby. Their first offline encounter at a local cafe led to a monthly neighborhood book club, now a cornerstone of community life.
AI is evolving into a powerful driver for fostering inclusive social connections within communities. In daily life, by using data analysis to understand residents’ interests and contact patterns, algorithms can form specific interest-based communities — from gardening groups to hiking clubs. For instance, neighbors living in suburban areas of the United States exchange professional knowledge through online platforms, which in turn helps organize offline activities such as seed-swapping events and joint community garden projects.
However, hidden risks may arise from the popularity of AI use in daily life. As social technology expert Dr. Lisa Chen points out, the digital gap leaves elderly people who don’t know how to use smart devices out of community information and social activities. Smart monitoring and data collection also cause privacy worries, as community platforms often share data with third parties without permission. Worse still, algorithms focusing on bad events may increase distrust in communities and stop natural engagement.
Experts advocate that communities ought to bridge the digital divide through AI literacy initiatives, safeguard data privacy via well-defined frameworks, and adjust algorithmic conduct based on moral standards. Ultimately, the core value of AI lies in complementing rather than replacing human connections. It is only by integrating technological efficiency with human warmth that we can promote more harmonious communities.
12 What can we learn about AI app from Sarah’s story?
A. It redefined interaction patterns. B. It directly launched a book club.
C. It greatly aroused social exclusion. D. It enhanced Sarah’s literacy innovation.
13. Which best explains “inclusive social connections” in communities?
A. Residents’ interests are known to all. B. All jobs are done on online platforms.
C. AI focuses on professional skill-sharing. D. Neighbors interact more online and offline.
14. What solutions may be effective for AI’s risks?
A. Allowing data sharing with third parties. B. Letting AI evolve freely to ensure efficiency.
C. Helping people, especially the elderly, use AI. D. Banning AI in activities to prevent privacy issues.
15. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. AI facilitates diverse interest-based communities.
B. AI both fosters connections and brings potential risks.
C. Experts raise practical proposals to address AI issues.
D. The digital gap threatens elderly people’s participation.

The Digital Doctor: A Double-Edged Sword
In our increasingly connected world, the way we manage our health is transforming. Faced with minor illnesses like a persistent cough or headache, many of us now instinctively reach for our smartphones rather than the phone to book a doctor’s appointment.____16____This immediate access to a vast encyclopedia (百科全书) of medical knowledge makes healthcare appear more accessible than ever before.
____17____The condition, known as “cyberchondria”, describes a state of health anxiety fueled by excessive online searching. The process often works like this: an individual researches a common symptom, only to find it could be linked to a severe illness. This can lead to self-misdiagnosis (自我误诊) and intense, unnecessary worry.____18____They advise the initial step in treatment is to drastically (极大地) reduce the patients’ internet browsing.
While the web holds a wealth of information, it critically lacks professional judgment. A face-to-face consultation with a doctor provides not just a diagnosis, but also context, reassurance, and a tailored treatment plan. But a trend makes physicians feel challenged. They sometimes find patients arriving with printouts or descriptions of vague conditions they have self-diagnosed.____19____
However, the internet is not solely a disruptive (破坏性) force. As Professor Sue Ziebland from the University of Oxford has found through her research, online information is becoming a common part of patient-doctor dialogues.____20____This collaborative approach can lead to more informed discussions. Ultimately, it seems that while the virtual world can offer a helpful dose of information, the human medical expert remains irreplaceable for their experience and empathetic care.
A. It can complicate the consultation process.
B. Some apps even enable remote patient monitoring.
C. Hence, building trusted medical websites is essential.
D. Online resources offer instant guidance on all health issues.
E. Experts find many such patients spend excessive time online.
F. However, this convenience comes with a significant downside.
G. Therefore, doctors now often discuss online findings with patients.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For sixteen years, my world was made of textbooks, phone screens, and the quiet sound of the air conditioner. My dad’s world, I thought, was smaller. It was just inside his hardware store (五金店), “Lee & Son.” That old sign felt like a promise I didn’t want — more like a prison sentence. My hands were smooth, made for typing His were rough, full of calluses (茧) and scars, with dirt under the nails that never washed away. He always kept a couple of bandages in his pocket, ready for the small cuts and scrapes that were part of the job.
The word “Son” on the sign seemed like a mistake. My future was in a clean office, not in the smell of sawdust and metal. Every Saturday, Dad asked for my help. Every Saturday, I found an excuse not to go. I was good at making excuses.
Then one day, he didn’t ask. He just said in a tired voice, “The basement flooded. The stock is all wet. I can’t do this alone.”
It wasn’t a question. I felt a heavy, guilty weight in my stomach. I followed him downstairs into the damp, dark basement.
The work was hard and quiet. We carried heavy bags of concrete that scratched my hands. We moved wet boxes of nails, all rusted together. The air smelled of wet cardboard. My back hurt, but I didn’t complain. I watched my father. He worked steadily, like a machine used to this. Sweat cut lines through the dirt on his arms. For the first time, I didn’t see a shopkeeper. I saw a man who had worked like this for years — every muscle showing his strength.
We worked for hours. Then, while moving a bent piece of wood, my foot slipped on the wet floor. I fell. The wood cut my arm, and a sharp pain shot through me. I held my arm, feeling sorry for myself.

【47题答案】
【答案】
Before I could speak, Dad was beside me. He knelt down quickly, his rough hands lifting my arm gently to check the bleeding cut. Without a word, he took out the bandages from his pocket, wiped the wound softly with a clean corner of his coat, and wrapped my arm carefully to stop the blood. His movements were skilled and gentle, with none of his usual tiredness. He asked in a low, worried voice if I felt better, his eyes fixed on my arm. I stared at his dirt-covered hands that had healed countless his own cuts, and just nodded, unable to say a single word.
A hot shame washed over me. I thought of all those Saturdays when I lied to skip helping him, leaving him to handle all the hard work alone. He never blamed me, but kept working silently to hold our life together. My smooth hands had never known hardship, while his were covered with scars from years of toil. I bit my lip and said sorry to him, promising to help at the store every weekend from then on. Dad smiled faintly and patted my shoulder. At that moment, I finally understood the “Son” on the sign was not a burden, but a precious bond I should cherish.
