Hita Gupta used to volunteer at a nursing home, trying to brighten the days of the residents. Now she spreads sunshine far and wide.
As a 15-year-old sophomore (二年级学生) at Conestoga High School, Hita has created a nonprofit organization that specializes in bringing cheer to socially isolated seniors. Her Brighten A Day foundation started out by sending goodie bags (礼包) with an adult coloring book, a large print puzzle book and crayons to Philadelphia-area nursing homes and sending letters with uplifting messages to facilities in neighboring states.
Hita has since widened the scope (范围) of her project, which is backed by donations through a Go Fund Me page as well as the work of an expanding army of volunteers. The project has reached as far as Hawaii and now includes video messages as well as the delivery of smart devices to help residents communicate with loved ones. “We’ve been able to reach so many seniors-who are among the loneliest people in our society-and let them know they are not alone,” Hita said.
Hita’s project has lifted spirits at the Genesis Wayne Center, according to Kaylee Nichols, the facility’s director. “It’s impressive to see a high school student take that kind of initiative,” Nichols said. “That generation, they normally don’t think about seniors.”
Hita was motivated to take action when officials at the nursing home where she used to volunteer said that she couldn’t visit anymore because of the corona virus outbreak. It made her determined to do something else to try to help. She started the Go Fund Me page, expanded the foundation’s website and began organizing volunteers from around the country to write cards or make videos for nursing home residents, who have been the most severely impacted by COVID-19. Hita also expanded her project to include the acquisition (购买) and distribution of smart devices to nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
“I'm very proud that Hita is able to bring smiles to so many seniors,” her mother, Swait, wrote in an email. Hita said her foundation's name was a reflection of her determination to chase away doubt and depression for folks in need. “I thought of the sun,” Gupta said. “I thought of people in the dark, lonely, and how much I wanted to brighten their days and bring joy to them.”

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy
And passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
Ultinatel was Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
46. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A. To invite authors to guide readers.
B. To encourage people to read and share.
C. To involve people in community service.
D. To promote the friendship between cities.
47. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?
A. They had little interest in reading.
B. They were too busy to read a book.
C. They came from many different backgrounds
D. They lacked support from the local government
48. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A. In large communities with little sense of unity
B. In large cities where libraries are far from home
C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population
D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached
49. The underlined words “shared a word” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. exchanged ideas with each other

C. gamed life experience

We live in a culture hooked on winning. Gold medals, bestseller lists, championships, and Nobel Prizes are the markers of glory. The spotlight shines brightest on the people who crossed the finish line first, while those who came close slip into the shadows.
But what about the “almosts”? The runner who lost by a hundredth of a second. The inventor who had the right idea at the wrong time. The artists whose works only mattered long after they were gone. These people rarely make the headlines, yet their efforts often bend the world in directions we don’t notice until much later. The truth is, the almosts aren’t failures. They’re the ones testing the edges, reaching further than most dare. Sometimes they push society forward more than the celebrated victors.
Nikola Tesla is remembered today as a genius, but during his lifetime, he was largely overshadowed by Thomas Edison. Edison had the success and the fame, while Tesla had bold visions of wireless power, alternating current, and radio that the world couldn’t quite catch up to. He died poor and overlooked. Yet look around: our homes, our transport, even our wireless communication, bear Tesla’s fingerprints.
Then there’s Vincent van Gogh. Despite producing over 2,000 artworks, Van Gogh struggled with poverty and mental illness while he was alive. His fame and the value of his work skyrocketed only after his death. Today, his masterpieces are among the most beloved works of art on the planet. His “almost” was the world’s failure to see beauty when it was right in front of them.
When we give the “almosts” their due, we loosen the tight grip(掌控) success has on victories and headlines. Winning becomes about the courage to try, fail, and keep going. Think of the small business that collapses, only for its founders to rise from the ashes with an idea that changes everything. Even in art, it’s often the painters and poets who never saw their work celebrated while alive who end up touching souls for generations.
The beauty of the “almost” is that it reminds us success is about daring to set out in the first place. It reminds us that effort is valuable even without applause. That struggle itself has meaning because most of us are “almosts” in some part of our lives. Few of us will find ourselves in first place. Yet we matter. The almosts live in the delicate space between shadow and legend, quietly keeping the world forward.

A. are widely identified figures whose stories support the argument

54. What can be inferred from the discussion of small businesses in Paragraph 5?
A. Initial failure usually guarantees ultimate success.
B. Risky start-ups should be banned by governments.
C. Lessons from failure may fuel later breakthroughs.
D. Founders should predict any slight chance of failure.
55. Which proverb is the author most likely to challenge?

五、阅读表达(共5小题,每题2分;共10分)
阅读短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
I was in a shopping mall recently, so I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an older gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch stretched out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather evident that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then it happened. One of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life.
There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. Then the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man a little perplexed, not fully understanding the request. That was when the young man asked her to give the juice to the older gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the girl except her tip. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Subsequently, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the older man in need of some attention. I only wish I had a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.
As I was pondering this event later on, I wondered to myself why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I suspect that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this older man as well. Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we encounter someone like this older gentleman, in need of kindness and attention. Perhaps he’s just simply lazy and didn’t work hard enough in his life. Or he should have gone to school and made more of himself. But just maybe he needs a little helping hand. Thank God for this young man who inspired the others to goodness as well. Oh, by the way, the last words this young man told the server was, “There go I, but by the Grace of God.”

【答案】 Turning Challenges into Stepping Stones
In life, we all encounter challenges, and my friend Tom was no exception. Recently, he faced the daunting task of learning a new programming language for a major project at school. Initially, the complex syntax and numerous algorithms seemed like insurmountable obstacles, leaving him feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.
To overcome this challenge, Tom first adjusted his mindset. He realized that learning a new skill takes time and effort, so he banished feelings of self - doubt and embraced a positive attitude. Then, he developed a detailed study plan. When he got stuck, he didn't hesitate to seek help. He joined online programming communities, where he interacted with experienced programmers who could answer his questions and offer valuable advice. He also consulted his school's programming teacher, who provided additional resources and guidance.
From this experience, Tom learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability. He realized that every challenge is an opportunity in disguise.

A. They had little interest in reading.
B. They were too busy to read a book.
C. They came from many different backgrounds

48. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A. In large communities with little sense of unity

D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached

B. Failure is always a stepping-stone to success.

A. are widely identified figures whose stories support the argument
B. achieved their greatest accomplishments after winning major prizes
C. worked in identical fields and gained recognition from their industry
D. were both famous and successful immediately in their own lifetimes
A. Winning isn’t everything but the only thing.
