I’m a city kid, who can often be unmoved by nature. But I am impressed by autumn as it unfolds. I’m impressed by how all the reds, yellows and golds that paint the leaves that still stick to the branches in the winds can become their own breathtaking landscape.
My wife and I spent a couple of days this week in Bend, Oregon. There were maple trees along a river that looked almost like geysers (间歇泉), springing up with red and gold leaves. Brown leaves lay on the ground and cracked under our feet with each step.
We walked through parks that seemed to have become covered with beautiful Persian carpets of leaves, which wind with swirls (旋涡) of brown and sun-bright yellow. Dogs played through those leaves, and shook them off their noses. Children dived into the knee-high piles, dancing and laughing. The wind would blow the leaves up there, and seemed to turn them into waves of red, orange, and yellow that rolled across the green of the park. At one point, a couple of leaves blew me in the face. As a city kid, my first response was to say, “What just hit me? Call a lawyer” But of course, it was truly an act of nature.
There is wonder and also sadness in autumn’s yearly scene. The curtain of summer heat lifts, singing for leaves with shades of orange, gold, and yellow. But the leaves that burn bright will soon fall away. The birds that rested and sang along the branches for spring and summer start to pack to fly off for warmer climates. It is part of the special show of autumn that reminds us how colder days are coming, and the darkness of longer nights.
We have ways to be warm and happy in the winter ahead, too. But autumn’s rushing days of clear mornings and bright colors can be moments that remind us to open our eyes to the world, and to cherish and care for it while we can.
4. What aspects of autumn particularly amazes the author?
A. The quietness of the countryside.
B. The colorful leaves beautifying the city.
C. The scene of children playing in the park.
D. The river flowing gently with fallen leaves
5. What does the underlined part “Call a lawyer” in paragraph 3 imply?
A. The author’s sensitive and soft feelings.
B. The author’s careful and serious attitude.
C. The author’s responsible and strict character.
D. The author’s humorous and light-hearted mood.
6. What can be inferred about the author’s view on nature’s cycles from paragraph 5?
A. He takes them as unchanging laws of nature.
B. He regards them as reminders of life’s brief beauty.
C. He considers them predictable and uninteresting.
D. He acknowledges little impact of them on human life.
7. What does the author try to convey?
A. Valuing today. B. Respecting nature
C. Enjoying yourself. D. Recording autumn.

Over the years, villagers living near Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park have often faced challenges as elephants have traveled further in search of food and water. Farmers near the park get spooked — their crops (庄稼) keep getting destroyed by the elephants, and some have even been hurt or killed.
To address these longstanding problems, last year, 16 elephants in Hwange were carefully fitted with special GPS collars (项圈) — “Earth Ranger”. These tools provide hourly information on their movements, enabling scientists to watch over the elephants.
“Sixteen is really a good number because if you fit one collar on a herd (群) of ten, which is the standard size for a school of elephants, we are basically tracking the movement of probably 160 elephants plus,” said Henry Ndaimani, program manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
The special tracking tool uses GPS technology to put a virtual geo-fence around the park, like a fence around a garden. With real-time GPS information, the research team can discover when elephants enter human villages and provide those communities with timely warnings to make necessary preparations.
Officials say the special collars have also greatly strengthened the overall protection efforts, with Zimbabwe making progress in its anti-poaching (反偷猎) efforts. “It even helps us to discover things like poaching. If the elephant is no longer moving, it means our collars can easily find that it has stopped for quite a long period and it becomes a warning,” said Tinase Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
Simbarashe Chiseva, the IFAW’s community development officer, said they have welcomed many young people to help in this important protection work. “We’ve provided the basic tools and the basic knowledge for them to understand the behavior of wildlife species like elephants and lions,” said Chiseva.
8. What does the underlined part “get spooked” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Appear. B. Compete C. Remain lost D. Become frightened
9. What is special about the 16 elephants?
A. They are already located.
B. They were raised by farmers.
C. They were the first to test GPS collars.
D. They have the largest herd size in Hwange.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about “Earth Ranger”?
A. Why it matters. B. How it works.
C. Its social influence. D. Its wide popularity.
11. What can we expect of “Earth Ranger”?
A. It could put Zimbabwe on the map.
B. It may encourage public acceptance of IFAW.
C. It might be introduced to other African countries.
D. It could turn young people into wildlife protectors.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D

【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The special tracking tool uses GPS technology to put a virtual geo-fence around the park, like a fence around a garden. With real-time GPS information, the research team can discover when elephants enter human villages and provide those communities with timely warnings to make necessary preparations.(这款专用追踪设备借助GPS技术,在公园外围构建出一道虚拟地理围栏,就像在花园四周筑起一道实体栅栏。依托实时GPS定位信息,研究团队能够及时发现象群闯入人类村落的动向,并向相关社区发出预警,以便村民做好必要的防范准备。)”可知,本段主要介绍了“地球守护者”是如何工作的。故选B。
【11题详解】

In the days before the Internet, critical thinking was the most important skill that the knowledgeable could have. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a German psychologist, an even more important skill is critical ignoring. With such a flood of information, we need to first decide what’s worth our attention and time, and what’s not.
The first strategy is self-pushing. This involves avoiding low-quality information so that we have more quality time for ourselves. It also includes the removal of distracting things from the environment around you. Successful dieters know that they need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Similarly, you need to set up your digital environment in such a way that attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. Of course, we need to follow world events, so we can’t just ignore the Internet altogether. When you do go into social media, Kozyreva recommends setting time limits, which prevents you from losing track of time as you click on one attractive link after another.
The next strategy is lateral (横向的) reading. Its purpose is to improve judgments about the reliability of information, and to protect you from false and misleading information. The strategy involves opening a new web page to find out more about the source of the information. Likewise, it’s also good to check the source of the information in an online post. Headlines often cheat people. They’re designed to attract attention, not to provide information. The main idea of the article may be completely opposite to the implication in the headline. A sensational (耸人听闻的) claim may provide a link with a headline that seems to support it, but a careful reading of the original source shows it doesn’t.
We live in a digital age in which we’re surrounded by information, much of it of poor quality. Train our critical ignoring skills and then we can get the benefits of the Internet while we avoid falling victim to those who try to control our attention.
12. Which of the following can best explain critical ignoring?
A. Rob Peter to pay Paul.
B. Look before you leap.
C. Make something out of nothing.
D. Separate the sheep from the goats.
13. What is suggested in the first strategy?
A. Managing our own time well.
B. Avoiding access to social media.
C. Keeping track of latest events.
D. Improving the study environment.
14. How can we get the reliable information of an article?
A. By selecting texts with photos.
B. By searching for original sources.
C. By reading posts with high hits.
D. By asking authorities for advice.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Skills used in digital times.
B. Significance of critical ignoring.
C. Approaches to achieving critical ignoring.
D. Links between critical thinking and ignoring.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

第二节(25分)
47. 读后续写:阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
My disinterest in “The Beautiful Game” has been lifelong. At primary school, my classmates spent their lunch break playing football, while I was in the library getting kicks from books and computers. In Games lessons, like all fat kids, I was put “in defence” — which involved chatting to my mates and occasionally pretending to be bothered about where the ball was. I became expert in copying the body language of the boys who cared: cheering when a goal was scored, and estimating their joy at a free kick, despite the fact that I didn’t understand the rules.
As I got older, I stopped trying to fake it and wore my dislike for football as a symbol of honour. “It’s only a game!” I’d tell Dad, as he persuaded me to watch football matches. I’d separate the Sports section from The Times and throw it straight into the bin, as if it had polluted the rest of the paper. When a big game was on, I’d go shopping, and post performative photos of me doing so on social media, smugly (沾沾自喜地) demonstrating how much more free time I had than the mindless majority around me, who were endlessly absorbed in their silly competition that pointlessly resets itself every 12 months.
But, occasionally in the backseat of a taxi, or when meeting a friend’s father, I’d find myself faced with a well-intentioned opener like, “Stephen, terrible season we’re having, eh?”, or simply, “Who do you support?”, and feel my heart sink, knowing my reply would unavoidably disappoint. Sometimes, such fellows would give me a friendly follow-up, “Oh, right, are you a rugby (橄榄球) man, then? Cricket?” — an equally unhelpful line of enquiry, given my total indifference to any sport aside from the Olympics (and there’s only two weeks every four years when anyone wants to chat about the Olympics).
This attitude of mine, I could see, had closed hours of conversation, evenings out, even entire friendships with people (well, men, mainly) that I might otherwise have enjoyed. I couldn’t change the fact that I found football boring, but was coming to regret my outsider status as much as I celebrated it.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 续写部分分为2段,每段开头已为你写好。
After I became a dad, I didn’t want my two boys to lack the desirable social skill.

Things began to change in many aspects in my life.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
After I became a dad, I didn’t want my two boys to lack this desirable social skill. I brought them outside with a football and got them a mini football table at home. Also, I bought them tickets to watch our local team. We sat close to the action, surrounded by families who clearly had a real connection to the players on the pitch. Because my kids kept asking me what was going on, I kept a close watch on the game. Almost without noticing it, I fell in love with football.
Things began to change in many aspects of my life. I found myself paying attention to every match result of the local team. I came to know the rules of football and bonded with my two boys. I was not embarrassed any more when I was in a taxi, because we could continue talking for hours if the driver liked. I had a better friendship with friends, enjoying hours of conversation and evenings out. Sometimes stepping out of one’s comfort zone can lead to rewarding experiences.
