Last weekend, I took my 4-year-old grandson Oliver to the park. He had been pestering (纠缠) me to take him to the park to watch the ducks in the pond; I finally realized his wish. I went in thinking I’d be the teacher to teach him about the ducks, but that day, Oliver ended up teaching me more.
He had no goals. 4-year-olds don’t need goals. As soon as we stepped 50 feet into the park, Oliver looked up at the sky, where big soft clouds moved slowly. He stood still, smiling, and found real joy in watching them. I’d long forgotten clouds’ magic: My mind was filled with things to do, but watching their slow movement could be soothing and reduce my worries and nervousness. Next, Oliver focused on the big trees, laughing as their branches shook in the wind. When a small bird jumped on the grass, he ran after it, laughing as though it were the funniest thing in the world. In that moment, nothing else mattered to him.
His curiosity never disappeared, especially when it came to fallen leaves. He hunted for them, big and small, treating each one like a treasure. He only saw them as tools for play. No screens or toys were needed. Nearby, kids played with their parents, and dog walkers passed by. Oliver waved at everyone, holding out his hand for high fives with 4-and 5-year-olds, who smiled and said hi back. His mix of real words and kid talk didn’t stop him — he just wanted to connect, without judgment, or fear.
The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.
4. Why did the author take Oliver to the park?
A. To clean the park. B. To feed the ducks.
C. To act as a teacher. D. To watch the ducks.
5. What does the underlined word “soothing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Confusing. C. Comforting. D. Changeable.
6. What do we know about Oliver from paragraph 3?
A. He was afraid of meeting people.
B. He had fun playing toys in the park.
C. He had a strong curiosity about fallen leaves.
D. He didn’t get along well with other children in the park.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Knowledge is power. B. Now is all that counts.
C. Friendship comes from getting together. D. Nothing is more important than education.
D 5. C 6. C 7. B

根据最后一段“The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.(我从中得到的最大教训是:活在当下。他从来没有问过时间,我们什么时候离开,或者接下来要做什么。无论他是在追树枝、抚摸狗,还是在草地上奔跑,他都完全沉浸在当下。和Oliver在一起的那一小时让我想起了我们作为成年人所失去的奇迹,也让我想起了我们可以从一个孩子简单的、计划外的快乐中学到很多东西)”可知,作者领悟到最重要的一点:要活在当下。故选B项。

Researchers have studied changes to mealtimes in older adults. They discovered people experience gradual shifts (改变) as they age, and these changes may show important information about their health.
Lead researcher Hassan Dashti explained that changes in when people eat, especially breakfast, can be a simple sign of overall health. He suggested that doctors and patients should use changes in mealtime routines as early warnings of hidden physical or mental problems. He also noted that keeping a regular (有规律的) eating schedule may support healthy aging and longer life.
To explore this idea, the team studied 2,945 adults in the UK, aged 42 to 94, who were followed for more than 20 years. They collected health data and blood samples (样本) to see how the mealtime might relate to health problems. They found that as older adults age, they tend to eat breakfast and dinner at later times, while also narrowing the overall time window in which they eat each day.
Later breakfast times were strongly related to health problems such as extreme sadness, low energy, poor sleep, and trouble preparing meals. People who ate later were also more likely to have oral health problems. Most importantly, later breakfast was connected with a higher risk of death. The researchers also found that people who were naturally “night owls” (preferring later sleep and wake times) tended to eat meals at later times.
“Up until now, we have had a limited (有限的) insight into how the mealtime develops later in life and how this change relates to overall health and longevity,” said Dashti. “Our findings help fill that gap by showing that later mealtimes, especially a later breakfast, are tied to both health challenges and increased death risk in older adults. These results add new meaning to the saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, especially for older adults.”
8. What did Dashti suggest about mealtime changes?
A. They usually have no clear reasons. B. They depend mainly on sleeping habits.
C. They can show signs of a person’s health. D. They are common among young people.
9. What did the researchers find about older adults?
A. They have more food each day. B. They miss breakfast more often.
C. They take longer time over meals. D. They eat meals later during the day.
10. What can be inferred about people who eat breakfast late?
A. They tend to live longer lives. B. They usually feel more energetic.
C. They are less likely to stay up. D. They may face certain health risks.
11. Which word can best describe the results of the study?
A. Disappointing. B. Uncertain. C. Helpful. D. Unexpected.
C 9. D 10. D 11. C

根据第二段中的“He suggested that doctors and patients should use changes in mealtime routines as early warnings of hidden physical or mental problems.(他建议医生和患者应将用餐时间规律的变化作为潜在身体或心理问题的早期预警信号。)”
根据第三段中的“They found that as older adults age, they tend to eat breakfast and dinner at later times, while also narrowing the overall time window in which they eat each day.(他们发现,随着老年人年龄增长,他们倾向于推迟吃早餐和晚餐的时间,同时也缩短了每天的总进食时间跨度。)”
根据第四段中的“Later breakfast times were strongly related to health problems such as extreme sadness, low energy, poor sleep, and trouble preparing meals. People who ate later were also more likely to have oral health problems. Most importantly, later breakfast was connected with a higher risk of death.(早餐时间推迟与极度悲伤、精力不足、睡眠质量差、做饭困难等健康问题密切相关。用餐时间较晚的人也更有可能出现口腔健康问题。最重要的是,早餐推迟与更高的死亡风险相关。)”可知,早餐吃得晚的人可能面临多种健康风险。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Our findings help fill that gap by showing that later mealtimes, especially a later breakfast, are tied to both health challenges and increased death risk in older adults.(我们的研究结果填补了这一空白,表明用餐时间推迟,尤其是早餐推迟,与老年人面临的健康挑战和死亡风险增加相关。)”

Students who plan to use AI (人工智能) tools to write their college admission essays (文章) should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer insights into who they are, beyond all the structured information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person’s natural writing style. This makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own article-writing positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”
12. What is a problem about AI-written essays?
A. They are short of a personal touch. B. They are always off-topic.
C. They use many difficult words. D. They hardly describe an event in detail.
13. What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its use. B. Its findings. C. Its researchers. D. Its background.
14. What does Lee advise high school students to do?
A. Use AI tools to improve their writing. B. Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C. Depend on AI models to write essays. D. Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Can AI Influence Students in College Writing?
B. Should Students Use AI Tools for College Essays?
C. Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays?
D. Will AI Change How College Students Write Essays?
A 13. B 14. A 15. B

An essential writing skill is the ability to use plain language effectively to convey ideas clearly. Plain language involves using direct and accessible language with a straightforward structure. To write in plain language, it is important to follow certain guidelines.
____16____ The only details necessary are those necessary for understanding. For example, the sign “Wait behind the yellow line,” at a train platform includes “yellow” so travelers know where to stand.
Plain language avoids using vocabulary that requires specialized knowledge. If you work in IT, you can comfortably use the word “latency” with your colleagues. ____17____ But when speaking with someone without an IT background, you might instead use “slow” to ensure that they know what you’re talking about.
Plain language is more than word choices, though. It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity. ____18____ For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your reader. ____19____ Additionally, use the active voice whenever possible to enhance clarity.
It is important to note that not every guideline for plain writing will apply to every piece of writing. The ultimate goal is to create contents that are accessible and easily understood. By using plain language, you demonstrate respect for your readers’ time and intelligence. ____20____
A. That is because they know what it means.
B. This can be achieved in the following ways.
C. Thus, it develops positive relationships with them.
D. In many cases, this means writing in the second person point of view.
E One key aspect of plain writing is ensuring sentences are as short as possible.
F. This can be especially important for those who speak English as a second language.
G. Plain language reduces the risk of misunderstandings caused by confusing language choices.

根据下文“The only details they include are those necessary for the reader to understand the sentences’ meaning. For example, the sign “Wait behind the yellow line,” at a train platform includes “yellow” so travelers know where to stand.(它们只包括那些读者理解句子意义所必需的细节。例如,火车站台上,“请在黄线后面等候”这句话包含了“黄色”,这样旅客就知道应该站在哪里。)”可知,写作时只包括那些读者理解句子意义所必需的细节。火车站台的例子表明内容要简短。结合选项E项One key aspect of plain writing is ensuring sentences are as short as possible.(简洁写作的一个关键方面是确保句子尽可能短。)
根据上文“If you work in IT, you can comfortably use the word “latency” with your colleagues.(如果您从事IT工作,那么您可以轻松地与同事使用“latency”这个词。)”提到您可以轻松地与同事使用“latency”这个词,以及下文“But when speaking with someone without an IT background, you might instead use “slow” to ensure that they know what you’re talking about.(但是当你和一个没有IT背景的人说话时,你可以用“slow”来确保他们知道你在说什么。)” That is because they know what it means.(那是因为他们知道这意味着什么。) 故选A项。
根据上文“Plain language is more than word choices, though. It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.(然而,简单的语言不仅仅是词语的选择。它还包括组织写作,优先考虑清晰。)”提到简单的语言不仅仅是词语的选择,还包括其它东西,以及下文“For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your read.(例如,每个部分使用清晰的标题。在句子或段落的开头尽早提及主题。直接写给读者。)”可知,上文强调组织写作,优先考虑清晰,下文给出了具体的做法。结合选项B项This can be achieved in the following ways.(这可以通过以下方式实现。)可知,This指代的是“It also involves structuring writing to prioritize clarity.”,“in the following ways”呼应的是下“文For example, use clear headers for each section. Mention the topic early in a sentence or paragraph. Write directly to your read.”,起到上下文的承上启下作用,符合语境。故选B项。
【19题详解】
根据上文 “Write directly to your reader. (直接写给读者。)”,再结合D项“In many cases, this means writing in the second person point of view.(在很多情况下,这意味着要运用第二人称来写作)”可知,this指代的是“直接写给读者”这一方法,运用第二人称来写作呼应“直接写给读者”这一语意,故选D项。
根据上文“By using plain language, you demonstrate respect for your readers’ time and intelligence.(通过使用通俗易懂的语言,你表现出对读者时间和智慧的尊重。)” 结合选项C项“Thus, it develops positive relationships with them.(因此,它与他们发展了积极的关系。)”

The state cross-country race was very hard, with mud, hills, and a cold wind. For me, a high school senior hoping for a college sports scholarship, this race was very important. The starting gun fired, and runners in colorful shirts rushed forward. I found my speed, but it was a difficult and painful pace.
The first two miles were a blur of pain. My lungs burned with every breath of cold air. When we reached the famous “Killer Hill” — a long and soul-crushing slope — many runners slowed down. I pushed very hard and passed a few tired competitors. For a short moment at the top of the hill, I even thought I could finish in the top ten.
But the effort cost me everything. The flat ground after the hill felt like running through concrete. I had a sharp pain in my side. My legs, once strong, now felt like heavy wood. The sound of the crowd in the faraway stadium seemed to laugh at me. I hit my limit, not just in my body, but in my mind. A voice in my head said with every step, “Just stop. Slow down. It’s okay to give up.”
One by one runners I had passed earlier began to pass me. Their heavy breathing and footsteps felt like the end of my dream. With each person who passed, my will to continue broke a little more. The finish line seemed a million miles away. I was drowning in tiredness and ready to accept defeat. My goal was disappearing, and I had no strength left to fight for it.
It was at my lowest point, as I looked down at the ground, fighting tears of pain and disappointment, that I heard steady, strong footsteps coming up behind me.

An experienced runner from another school caught up with me. “You’ve got this!” he shouted over the wind. “Don’t stop now — we’re almost there!” When I glanced at him, I saw his eyes were clear and determined. He didn’t know me, yet he chose to stay with me at this difficult moment. Suddenly, something inside me changed. It was his courage that lit a small fire in my heart. I took a deep breath, clenched my fists, and decided to keep going.
Hearing his inspiring words, I wiped the tears from my eyes. I straightened my back and pushed forward, ignoring the burning in my legs. The crowd’s cheers, which had seemed to laugh at me earlier, now sounded like encouraging music. Crossing the finish line, I collapsed but smiled. I didn’t know my final ranking, but I knew I had overcome my weakest self. I also learned that when you feel like giving up, a small act of kindness can help you find the courage to keep going.

A. Dangerous. B. Confusing. C. Comforting. D. Changeable.

A. He was afraid of meeting people.
B. He had fun playing toys in the park.
C. He had a strong curiosity about fallen leaves.
D. He didn’t get along well with other children in the park.
7. What can we learn from the text?

B. Uncertain. C. Helpful. D. Unexpected.
D

One by one, runners I had passed earlier began to pass me.
