A grandmother cooks chicken. A group of kids, ages 8 to 14, watch her make the dish. This cooking class is part of a “Summer Camp” in Southern California. At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts.
“Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab, who works at Olive Community Services that brings older adults together and created the camp.
During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.
Rahim also doesn’t get to spend much time with her grandchildren because they don’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” she said.
The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact. She noticed that many students didn’t have the chance to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about challenges faced by senior adults, such as unfair treatment.
The club organizes monthly lunches at Leena’s school. They invite the seniors to the school and discuss topics where both groups can learn from each other. One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena. “The people we have right now, they’re not going to be with us forever,” she said.
4. What can we know about the Summer Camp?
A. It is mainly about cooking. B. It offers jobs to teenagers.
C. It is held on a monthly basis. D. It is in the charge of the seniors.
5. What do the underlined words “filling a gap” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Providing engaging games. B. Offering nutritious meals.
C. Teaching practical techniques. D. Organizing interactive activities.
6. What did Rahim think of teaching the sewing class at the camp?
A. Refreshing. B. Fulfilling. C. Challenging. D. Pioneering.
7. What is the main purpose of the club?
A. To pass down traditional recipes. B. To ensure an inclusive atmosphere.
C. To improve elderly people’s welfare. D. To promote interaction between generations.

Many dog owners believe their pets understand and respond not only to commands such as “sit” and “stay, ” but also to words referring to their favorite objects. “Bring me your ball” will often result in exactly that. But science has had trouble determining whether dogs really activate (激活) a mental image in their minds when they hear the name of an object.
A new study has found that beyond being able to respond to commands like “roll over, ” dogs can learn to connect words with specific objects — a relationship with language called referential understanding that had been unproven in dogs until now.
The study involved 18 dogs and a procedure using electrodes (电极) attached to dogs’ heads to measure brain activity and register brain waves. Dog owners participating in the study would play a voice recording in which they said the name of their dog’s toy — like “ball” — and then they would show the dog an object. The researchers measured the dogs’ brain activity when the object in the recording matched the object that was displayed and also when it differed.
“We expected that if a dog really understands the meaning of the object’s word, it will expect to see that object. And if the owner shows a different one, there will be a so-called surprise reaction in the brain, ” Boros said.
The study found a different brain pattern when the dogs were shown an object that matched the word, compared to when it didn’t — suggesting the animals formed a mental image of an object based on hearing the word for it. The study supports “theories of language evolution (进化) which actually say that referential understanding is not necessarily unique to humans,” added Magyari, an associate professor at the University of Stavanger in Norway.
While the study has received praise, some experts have expressed doubts about its findings. Behavioral scientist and professor of psychology, Clive Wynne, said in a post onFacebook that he believes that all the study shows is that dogs respond to stimuli (刺激) — but that they don’t actually understand the meaning of specific words.
8. What has puzzled scientists about dogs?
A. How dogs activate mental images in mind. B. How dogs respond to their favorite objects.
C. Whether dogs can connect words with objects. D. Whether dogs can truly understand commands.
9. How did the researchers conduct the study of dogs?
A. By observing their interactions with owners.
B. By training them to identify specific objects.
C. By monitoring their brain waves in different situations.
D. By comparing their reactions to different human voices.
10. In the study, surprise reactions in dog’s brain are caused by a mismatch between ________.
A. what they want and what they are given B. what they hear and what they are shown
C. what they are trained to do and what is tested D. what they are familiar with and what is displayed
11. What is Clive Wynne’s attitude toward the study’s findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Objective. D. Supportive.
D
The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. The findings support the theory that low oxygen levels drive increased energy consumption, though prior evidence comes mainly from adults.
To understand the potential impact on children, Lizcano Losada at the University of La Sabana analysed data on 4.16 million children aged up to 5 years old from 1123 cities. The children were separated into four groups relating to the height above sea level at which they lived: up to 1000 metres, 1001 to 2000 metres, 2001 to 3000 metres or above 3000 metres.
In the two lower-altitude regions, around 80 out of every 10,000 children had obesity. However, at altitudes of 2001 to 3000 metres, the prevalence (发生率) of obesity fell to 40 in 10,000. At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges.
“That’s a fair comment,” says David Stensel at Loughborough University. But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. “They’ve tried to make sure they’ve adjusted for the other potential influencing factors,” he says. These include measures of poverty and low income. But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really does make obesity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear how this knowledge could be of practical use in reducing the condition.
However, Losada argues the findings support the creation of geographically tailored public health strategies. He suggests further studies are needed to better understand the biological pathways linking altitude to childhood obesity, which could lead to more precise health advice for different regions.
12. What was the analysis in Losada’s study mainly based on?
A. Grouped data. B. Sample size.
C. Children’s age. D. City type.
13. What is the team’s view on the unexpected result of the study?
A. It’s a definite trend.
B. It’s a chance occurrence.
C. It’s a misleading signal.
D. It’s a measurement error.
14. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Stensel in paragraph 4?
A. The importance of health knowledge.
B. The necessity of actionable strategies.
C. The limitation of the research method.
D. The complexity of the influencing factors.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Altitude’s Role in Childhood Weight
B. Less Oxygen, Healthier Children?
C. A New Approach to Fighting Obesity
D. Why the Weight Gap in Colombia?

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

The researchers measured the dogs’ brain activity when the object in the recording matched the object that was displayed, and also when it differed.
C. Objective. D. Supportive.

15 Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Altitude’s Role in Childhood Weight
B. Less Oxygen, Healthier Children?
C. A New Approach to Fighting Obesity
D. Why the Weight Gap in Colombia?
A 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第三段中的“At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges. (在海拔3000米以上的地区,肥胖发生率又有所上升,达到万分之八十六。然而,研究团队表示这可能是一个统计偶然,因为该数据集包含的城市和儿童数量少于其他三个海拔区间。)”可知,研究团队认为这个意外结果是偶然发生的。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. (但他也强调,这项研究是观察性的,因此并不能证明高海拔可以预防肥胖。)”以及“But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. (但是“你不可能考虑到所有因素”,斯滕塞说。)”可知,作者提及斯滕塞尔是为了说明该研究方法存在局限性。故选C项。

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。本篇主要讲了探索自己的内心世界对于自己的重要性,文章列举了一些探索自己内心世界方法,并解释了为什么这些方法可以带来更好的人际关系。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Have you found focusing on yourself is at the bottom of the to-do list, because you feel everyone else in your life comes first?(你是否发现关注自己被排在待办事项清单的最后,因为你觉得生活中的其他人都是第一位的?)”
根据上文“This isn’t just about identifying your favorite outfit, haircut or flavor of ice cream.((关注自己)不仅仅是确定你最喜欢的衣服、发型或冰淇淋的味道)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出关注自己的真正含义。 This isn’t just about identifying和G选项It’s about understanding构成句法上的转折关系。
根据上文“There are many tools to help you develop a deeper sense of yourself, including journaling and other forms of creative expression. You can use a guided journal to explore your thoughts and feelings or just free write whatever comes to mind. It’s up to you what you want to do.(有很多工具可以帮助你发展更深层次的自我意识,包括日记和其他形式的创造性表达。你可以使用指南来探索你的想法和感受,或者只是自由地写下任何想到的东西。你想做什么由你自己决定)”可知,本段在陈述写日记能够更好地探索你的内心世界,但是仅仅专注于写日记就好, 不要去批判日记中自己的想法。此处的writing与F选项中journaling可以构成同义替换。故F选项“但是尽量不要陷入对你写作的批评或评判中”符合语境,故选F。
【19题详解】
根据后文“Take note of how you respond to people, what makes you happy, and what makes you unhappy. This can help you identify patterns that are holding you back, such as feeling insecure or being easily angered. Once you’ve identified these patterns, you can work to change them.(注意你对别人的反应,什么让你快乐,什么让你不快乐。这可以帮助你识别阻碍你前进的模式,比如缺乏安全感或容易生气。一旦你确定了这些模式,你就可以努力改变它们)”可知,上一段陈述了一种关注自己内心世界的方法,而本段则是在陈述另外一种方法,因此D选项中Another way is to符合并列的条件,且本句的意思也与后面的“关注自己在人际交往中如何反应”相符合。故D选项“另一种方法是观察你在不同情况下的行为”符合语境,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据上文“An often overlooked yet very important factor in self-discovery is having healthy boundaries in your personal life.(自我发现的一个经常被忽视但非常重要的因素是在你的个人生活中有健康的界限)”以及后文“Clearly communicating your boundaries is also a way to show others that you are in control of your own behavior and can expect the same from them. This is a sign of maturity and respect, two characteristics that are key to having healthy relationships.(清楚地表达你的界限也是一种向别人表明你能控制自己的行为,并期望他们也能做到这一点的方式。这是成熟和尊重的标志,这两个特征是拥有健康关系的关键)”可知,前一句陈述要划定一个健康的人际关系界限,后一句则提及和别人划清界限意味着你能够很好地控制自己的行为并且也希望别人能够控制好自己的行为,这种行为能够既关注自己也关注别人,故E选项“它能让你专注于自己的需求,而不会忽视他人”符合语境,故选E。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写词数应为150左右;

One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.
