The first light pushed through the blinds as Elena slipped on her shoes. The city was still quiet. Today was Saturday — but not a day for rest. She had signed up to help at Rosie’s Free Kitchen, a local nonprofit that made hot meals for people in need.
She arrived early. The kitchen was already busy. At a corner table, an older man named Mr. Daniels was already cutting carrots. He gave her a nod and said, “Thanks for coming.” She smiled, though her hands were a bit shaky.
Elena’s task was simple: wash and prepare vegetables for soup. She watched volunteers move around her — some stirring big pots, others pouring the soup into the bowls, still more packaging meals. It was indeed a quiet dance of service.
Twenty minutes in, someone shook the doors. A young mother walked in with her little kid. Their eyes were cautious. Elena’s heart suddenly tightened. She served them a warm bowl of soup and watched as the child pressed his face into the bowl’s steam. The mother’s eyes met Elena’s. A silent “thank you” hung between them, heavier than words.
At midday the line grew longer — but so did the smiles. An older woman whispered, “You didn’t have to do this.” Elena shook her head. “Yes, I did.” The woman touched her hand and said, “I really appreciate it.” The words were simple, but they echoed in Elena’s mind.
After cleanup — mopping floors, putting away plates, wiping tables — the kitchen fell silent. As Elena walked home, her shoes dusty, her shirt smelling slightly of garlic, she felt full in a way she hadn’t before. Service, she realized, was not a burden — it was a bridge. A bridge connecting different lives through shared humanity. A bridge she felt honored to help build, one bowl at a time.
4. How did Elena feel when she started her work at the kitchen?
A. Nervous but excited. B. Curious and relaxed.
C. Confident and proud. D. Tired but determined.
5. What does “a quiet dance of service” imply?
A. It was a slow process. B. It was a smooth cooperation.
C. It was a silent activity. D. It was a graceful performance.
6. Why does the author mention the older woman in Paragraph 5?
A. To show Elena’s personal growth. B. To indicate the diversity of people helped.
C. To describe the challenges volunteers face. D. To stress the value of Rosie’s Free Kitchen.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A Kitchen: A Scene of Labor B. Saturday: A Day of Duty
C. Service: A Bridge of Kindness D. Work: A Burden of Volunteer

①Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most influential forces in modern society, permeating (渗透) various aspects of our daily lives. From voice-activated assistants like Siri and Alexa in our smartphones to self-driving cars being tested on the roads, AI is no longer a concept of science fiction but a tangible (切实的) reality.
②At present, AI algorithms (算法) are being used extensively (广泛地) in the field of healthcare. They can analyze vast amounts of medical data, such as patient records, test results, and genetic information, to assist doctors in making more accurate diagnoses. For example, in cancer detection, AI-powered tools can identify patterns in medical images that might be overlooked by human eyes, leading to earlier and more effective treatment. In the business world, AI is revolutionizing (彻底改变) customer service. Chatbots, which are AI-driven programs, can answer customers’ questions, provide product recommendations, and handle basic transactions 24/7. This not only improves customer satisfaction but also reduces the workload of human customer service representatives.
③However, the rapid development of AI also brings about a series of challenges. One of the major concerns is job displacement (取代). As AI systems become more capable of performing tasks that were previously done by humans, such as data entry, assembly line work, and even some aspects of financial analysis, many workers may find their jobs at risk. For instance, in the manufacturing (制造业) industry, automated robots controlled by AI are replacing human laborers in repetitive and dangerous tasks. Another issue is the ethical (伦理的) dilemma. AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on. If the training data contains biases (偏见), the AI system may produce discriminatory (歧视性的) results. For example, in recruitment (招聘), an AI-based screening tool might unconsciously favor certain genders or ethnic groups if the historical data used for training has such biases.
④Looking into the future, the potential of AI seems limitless. Scientists are working on developing more advanced AI systems that can think and learn like humans, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI) (通用人工智能). If achieved, AGI could solve some of the world’s most complex problems, such as climate change, poverty, and disease. However, it also raises significant concerns about control and the role of humans in a highly automated world.
In conclusion, AI is transforming our world at an unprecedented pace. While it offers great opportunities in various fields, we must also be aware of the challenges it poses and take appropriate measures to ensure its development is both beneficial and ethical.
8. Which of the following best illustrates AI’s “tangible reality” mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. Scientists predicting future AI breakthroughs in academic papers.
B. A student using a voice assistant to set an alarm on their phone.
C. Filmmakers creating movies about AI-controlled societies.
D. Novelists writing stories about intelligent robots.
9. The example of chatbots in customer service is used to show that AI can ________.
A. eliminate the need for human customer service representatives entirely
B. work only during specific hours of the day
C improve service efficiency while reducing human workload
D provide less accurate recommendations than humans
10. What does the author imply about AGI?
A. It will definitely solve all global problems once achieved.
B. Its development may bring both great benefits and potential risks.
C. Scientists have already succeeded in developing fully functional AGI.
D. It is less advanced than current AI systems in terms of learning ability.
11. The author’s tone in the passage can be described as ________.
A. overly critical of AI’s negative impacts
B. blindly optimistic about AI’s future
C. objective with a sense of caution
D. indifferent to AI’s development
D
Putting food into the microwave for a couple of minutes may seem totally harmless, but Europe’s quick-cooking ovens emit as much carbon as nearly 7 million cars, a new study has found, and the problem is growing. Due to the fact that costs are falling and kitchen appliances (厨房电器) are becoming symbols of status, owners are throwing many microwaves after an average of eight years. This is pushing rising sales of new microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.
A study by the University of Manchester worked out the emissions of carbon dioxide — the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change — at every stage of microwaves, from production to waste disposal. “It is electricity consumption by microwaves that has the biggest impact on the environment,” say the authors, who also calculate that the emissions from using 19 microwaves over a year are the same as those from a car. According to the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to use appliances more efficiently. For example, electricity consumption by microwaves can be reduced by adjusting the time of cooking to the type of food.
However, David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone and these emit way more than all the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted 69m tonnes of CO₂ in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU.
Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.
12. What contributes to the increasing consumption of new microwaves?
A. Various functions. B. More carbon emission.
C. Declining prices. D. Further improved quality.
13. What is the advice from the study by the University of Manchester?
A. Changing microwave users’ habits.
B. Stopping using microwaves gradually.
C. Carrying out more research on microwaves.
D. Replacing microwaves with other appliances.
14. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By giving definition. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparison. D. By concluding viewpoints.
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Microwaves are probably not to blame.
B. Energy efficiency is not a top priority.
C. People should be talked into using microwaves less often.
D. Stoves consume the least energy among kitchen appliances.

Grace and Ellen, both promising in their school’s dance competition, were fierce competitors. They both had great passion for dancing and dreamed for bigger stages. They were both friends and competitors. They had similar taste in music, and had similar dressing styles. They had both devoted themselves to preparing for the upcoming contest.
Grace’s journey to the competition was marked by countless hours of practice and determination. She would rise before the sun, and the studio lights were her only company. Every movement was perfected with unwavering mind. She knew that this competition wasn’t just about personal success; it was also about upholding her school’s honor. “Grace, you’re incredible!” Grace’s dance instructor, Mrs. Anderson, often praised her. “Your hard work will pay off.”
Ellen had been practicing hard for this competition as well. Her love for dance was her driving force. After school, she would head straight to the dance studio, tirelessly perfecting every step. Her dance shoes had become a part of her feet, and her heart burned with a strong desire for victory. “Ellen, you’re a natural,” her fellow dancers would often say. “You’ve got this!”
The day of the competition finally arrived, and there were five competitors fighting for the championship title. Ellen was scheduled to perform before Grace.
As Ellen stood backstage, the butterflies in her stomach seemed to have turned into a whirlwind. She practiced every move once again but suddenly broke her dress with a sharp movement. Panic set in as her mind raced for a solution.
“Ellen, you’re up next!” the stage manager announced.
In the dimly lit backstage area, Grace overheard Ellen’s whispers to her friend, Sarah.

She watched volunteers move around her — some stirring big pots others pouring the soup into the bowls, still more packaging meals.
At midday, the line grew longer — but so did the smiles.

A. Kitchen: A Scene of Labor B. Saturday: A Day of Duty
C. Service: A Bridge of Kindness D. Work: A Burden of Volunteer
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. C

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“Due to the fact that costs are falling and kitchen appliances(厨房电器) are becoming symbols of status, owners are throwing many microwaves after an average of eight years. This is pushing rising sales of new microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.(由于成本的下降和厨房电器正成为地位的象征,许多微波炉平均使用8年之后就被扔掉了。这推动了新微波炉销量的增长,预计到本十年末,新微波炉在欧盟的年销量将达到1.35亿台)”可知,价格下降是导致新微波炉消费量增加的原因之一。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to use appliances more efficiently.( 根据同一项研究,减少消费的努力应侧重于提高消费者的意识和行为,以更有效地使用电器)”可知,曼彻斯特大学的研究给出的建议是改变微波炉用户的使用习惯。故选A项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“However, David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone and these emit way more than all the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted 69m tonnes of CO₂ in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU.( 然而,碳管理教授大卫·雷伊(David Reay)认为,尽管微波炉消耗大量能源,但与汽车相比,它们的排放量很小。
根据最后一段“Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.( 此外,微波所消耗的能量比其他任何烹饪方式都要低。在用于烹饪的常用厨房电器中,微波炉是最节能的,其次是炉子,最后是标准烤箱。因此,微波炉销量的上升可以被视为一件积极的事情)”可知,在常见的用于烹饪的厨房电器中,微波炉是最节能的,而且其能源使用量低于任何其他形式的烹饪方式,所以微波炉销量的上升可以被视为一件积极的事情。这意味着微波炉可能不应该被指责(导致过多碳排放等问题)。故选A项。

【答案】
Grace knew her dress would fit Ellen perfectly, but she hesitated. After all, it was Ellen’s own fault for breaking her dress. However, Grace also understood that sometimes in competition, we should put aside our differences and help each other. She took a deep breath and approached Ellen. “Ellen, I heard your problem,” Grace said with a soft voice, “my dress can fit you perfectly. You can wear my dress on stage.” Ellen’s eyes widened in surprise. “Grace, you would do that for me?” she asked, her voice trembling.“Of course, Ellen,” Grace replied, a gentle smile on her face. “Now, go out there and show them what you’ve got.”
Tears of thanks welled up in Ellen’s eyes as she put on Grace’s dress. She knew that she had let herself down and almost gave up, but Grace’s act of kindness restored her faith in herself. She vowed to herself that she would not let Grace down and would do her best in the competition. Finally, Ellen won the competition with her outstanding performance. But what made her happiest was having such a good friend.
