With monkeys’ sad adieux the riverbanks are loud;

In 759 AD, Li Bai got into some trouble in politics (政治), getting banished (放逐) by the Emperor Xuanzong, to Yelang (in today’s western Guizhou Province). When he stopped shortly on his way at Baidicheng, news came that the emperor had freed him.

The last line was about a journey, by boat, through ten thousand mountains. If you took this journey, you’d be quite bored. But, on the way home, Li Bai felt the journey passed in the blink of an eye.

“No,” Tom whispered. “It’s two men. One is the old Spaniard. He came to live in the village last week. I don’t know the other man. Sh! Let’s listen to them.”
The two men sat down on the floor. The Spaniard had a green hat and long white hair; the other man was small and dark. He took out a bag and began to open it.
“It’s hot here,” the Spaniard said. He took off his green hat and then he took off his long white hair!
“Tom!” Huck whispered upstairs. “That’s Injun Joe!”
“We took six hundred and fifty dollars when we robbed that house,” said the second man. He took some money out of the bag. “We can take fifty dollars with us now. What are we going to do with the six hundred?”
“Leave it here,” said Injun Joe. “We can come back and get it next week. Here, give me the bag.”
He walked across the room to the fireplace, moved two big stones from the floor, and began to dig with his knife.
Upstairs, the two boys watched excitedly. Treasure! Six hundred dollars of wonderful treasure!
Injun Joe stopped digging. “Hello, what’s this?” he said. “There’s something here. It’s an old box.”
The two men got the box out and opened it.
“It’s money!” said Injun Joe’s friend.
Injun Joe put his hand into the box. “There are thousands of dollars here!” he said, and the two men looked at the money with happy smiles.
“But who—” began Injun Joe’s friend.
“Don’t ask,” Injun Joe said. “It’s our money now.”
“We can’t take it with us today,” said his friend. “What can we do with it? Put it back under the floor?”
“Yes,” said Injun Joe. (Happy faces upstairs.) “No! (Very unhappy faces upstairs.) Let’s put it under the cross—nobody goes there. We can take it there tonight.”

【答案】53.B 54.B 55.B 56.D
【导语】本文节选自《汤姆索亚历险记》,讲述汤姆和哈克发现一个有很多钱的盒子的经历。
53.词句猜测题。根据“We took six hundred and fifty dollars when we robbed that house…What are we going to do with the six hundred?”以及下文“Leave it here…We can come back and get it next week.”可知,这里讨论的是那六百美元怎么处理,所以it指代的是六百美元,即Six hundred dollars。故选B。
54.细节理解题。根据“Let’s put it under the cross—nobody goes there. We can take it there tonight.”可知,印第安・乔和他的朋友计划把旧盒子里的钱藏在没人去的十字架下面。故选B。
55.细节理解题。根据“There were holes in the floor, and through them the boys could see into the rooms downstairs…It’s two men.”可知,汤姆和哈克先通过地板上的洞发现了两个男人,这是事件b;接着,“The Spaniard had a green hat and long white hair; the other man was small and dark…He took off his green hat and then he took off his long white hair!”表明印第安・乔摘下了绿帽子和假的白色长发,这是事件d;然后,“Injun Joe stopped digging. ‘Hello, what’s this?’ he said. ‘There’s something here. It’s an old box.’ The two men got the box out and opened it. ‘It’s money!’”说明两人发现了装有钱的旧盒子,这是事件a;最后,“Let’s put it under the cross—nobody goes there. We can take it there tonight.”体现两人决定把钱放在十字架下面,这是事件c。所以事件发生的顺序是b-d-a-c。故选B。
56.推理判断题。根据“The boys wanted very much to find that ‘cross’, but they were afraid of Injun Joe.”可知,男孩们非常害怕印第安・乔,所以可以推断他们可能最终会放弃跟踪印第安・乔和他的朋友。故选D。
D
Wake up early enough and you may hear a pleasant chorus of birds singing their tiny hearts out. This is a natural thing for birds, but why?
According to the Woodland Trust, this early singing can start as early as 4 a.m. and last for several hours. Birds do it to attract mates and ask other birds to stay away from their area. One idea about why they choose the early morning to send these important messages is because the low visibility (能见度) makes it hard to do other bird activities, like hunting food. Since there’s nothing to do, they choose to sing instead.
Another idea is that birds use the morning songs to show a picture of strong body. By singing, they’re letting other birds know they’ve survived (存活) the night and would make for an excellent mate.
Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also let birds send clear sounds thanks to the cooler, drier air. As birds have different voices, that helps other birds nearby identify them more easily.
There used to be a popular idea that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel to farther places with less air turbulence (气流). But researchers at the University of Western Ontario proved (证明) it wrong in 2003. They played recordings of sparrows at dawn (early morning) and midday. The songs didn’t travel farther, but they were more consistent (连贯的). Because birds only have so much energy to sing out, singing when it can be heard makes sense. For a bird, the early morning singing is like having the wonderful sound environment for their performance.
57.Why do birds sing at dawn instead of during the day according to Paragraph 2?
A.They can send clear sounds. B.They want to show they are strong.
C.They need to hunt for more food. D.They can possibly do nothing but sing.
58.What does the underlined word “identify” most probably mean?
A.Hunt other animals or birds. B.Create something new.
C.Find somebody or something. D.Prevent something bad.
59.What does the writer think of birds’ early singing?
A.Birds’ early singing is pleasant and it’s natural for birds.
B.Less air turbulence makes birds’ early singing travel farther.
C.The early singing can start at dawn and last for several hours.
D.The early singing shows they’re strong enough to be an excellent mate.
60.What is this passage mainly about?
A.Showing how to better watch the birds. B.Discussing why birds sing at dawn.
C.Introducing all kinds of birds’ songs. D.Asking humans to care about birds.
【答案】57.D 58.C 59.A 60.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了鸟儿们为什么在早晨唱歌的相关观点。
57.细节理解题。根据“One idea about why they choose the early morning to send these important messages is because the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like hunting food. Since there’s nothing to do, they choose to sing instead.” 可知因为早上能见度低,没什么事能做所以唱歌,故选D。
58.词义猜测题。根据“As birds have different voices, that helps other birds nearby identify them more easily.” 可知不同声音能让其他鸟更容易识别它们,所以identify更贴近“辨认、识别”之意,故选C。
59.细节理解题。根据“Wake up early enough and you may hear a pleasant chorus of birds singing their tiny hearts out. This is a natural thing for birds” 可知作者认为鸟儿清晨歌唱是愉快且自然的,故选A。
60.主旨大意题。根据“Wake up early enough and you may hear a pleasant chorus of birds singing their tiny hearts out. This is a natural thing for birds, but why?”及全文可知文章主要讨论了鸟儿为什么在黎明唱歌,故选B。

Can a cricket really tell you the temperature outside? Do fish know if it’s going to be a cold winter? You may hear that groundhogs can predict (预测) the end of the winter. Some of the sayings, like, “if a cat sits with its back to the fire, hard weather can be expected.” may sound unbelievable, but some may be true. Many animals do have stronger senses than humans.
Do animals tell us when a storm is coming? Birds react to the drop in air pressure (气压) before a storm by flying low. Insects stay close to the ground and wolves howl because their ears can sense the pressure change. A good rule is, when animals act strangely, you probably should be careful with the environment (环境) around us.
Do you know the sound of crickets’ chirping (鸣叫) can tell you how hot the day is? Crickets are cold-blooded, so when the temperature in the air changes, the cricket’s body temperature changes with it. As the temperature rises, the cricket’s metabolism (新陈代谢) increases. When the heat rises, crickets chirp. To get the exact temperature in degrees Fahrenheit (℉), count the number of chirps in 14 seconds, and add 40.
Do you have a tried and true weather animal that predicts the weather?

Leaving the White Emperor Town at DawnBy Li Bai
Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud;
I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day.
With monkeys’ sad adieux the riverbanks are loud;
My skiff has left ten thousand mountains faraway.
Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn was a seven-character poem written by Li Bai, a famous poet (诗人) of the Tang Dynasty. In 759 AD, Li Bai got into some trouble in politics (政治), getting banished (放逐) by the Emperor Xuanzong, to Yelang (in today’s western Guizhou Province). When he stopped shortly on his way at Baidicheng, news came that the emperor had freed him.
Excited and eager, he felt like he made it back home, to Jiangling, in just one day.
In many poems, poets showed their feelings through a special view. Leaving the White Emperor Town at Dawn was about a journey taken by boat. It didn’t tell joy directly, but readers can feel the poet’s joy through his writing.
The second line compared (比较) a short period of time (“a day”) and a long distance (“a thousand miles”), telling us how fast the boat was moving. But the rapid (湍急的) water didn’t make the poet afraid. Instead, he was excited as the water was helping him quickly reach his destination (目的地).
The last line was about a journey, by boat, through ten thousand mountains. If you took this journey, you’d be quite bored. But, on the way home, Li Bai felt the journey passed in the blink of an eye.
In ancient Chinese poems, the singing of monkeys usually stood for sadness, and mountains represented difficulties. However, the poet was not sad about these things because he was able to quickly leave them behind. His hope for the future keep him happy.

There is a time in every boy’s life when he wants to go and dig for treasure. And that time came for Tom.
So, one hot summer’s day, he went to find Huck…
There were holes in the floor, and through them the boys could see into the rooms downstairs.
When night came, the two men carried all the money away. The boys wanted very much to find that “cross”, but they were afraid of Injun Joe.

七、阅读表达(共 5 小题; 每小题 2分, 满分10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容用英语回答问题,每题答案不超过6个单词。
86.Why can some animals know the weather changes?
87.What do birds do before the storm?
88.When should we be careful with the environment?
89.What can crickets’ chirps tell us?

Leaving the White Emperor Town at DawnBy Li Bai
Leaving at dawn the White Emperor crowned with cloud;
I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day.
With monkeys’ sad adieux the riverbanks are loud;
49.Which word rhymes with “loud”in the poem?

There is a time in every boy’s life when he wants to go and dig for treasure. And that time came for Tom.
So, one hot summer’s day, he went to find Huck…
There were holes in the floor, and through them the boys could see into the rooms downstairs.
When night came, the two men carried all the money away. The boys wanted very much to find that “cross”, but they were afraid of Injun Joe.
