The kitchen was filled with the loud sound when my mum fried chicken. I stood beside her, watching the golden fat melt (融化). It made my mouth water. “Step two,” Mum said with a smile, “pour hot water into the pot,” She added spices (香料) to the chicken. The way her hands moved over the food was truly amazing. It was like she had some kind of magic power. With just a few simple movements (动作), she could turn those ordinary ingredients into special chicken soup.
Last winter, I was sick. Mum was really worried about me. She quickly went into the kitchen and cooked the special chicken soup for me. To help me get better, she even added some medicine(药) that the doctor had given her. Holding the warm bowl of soup in my hands and looking into Mum’s eyes filled with love, I suddenly felt a lot better.
Now, whenever I smell this familiar scent (气味), it’s like a magic key that opens the door to those warm memories. This simple dish is far more than just about its delicious taste. It carries the warmth of our home and a mother’s deep love. It always takes me back to that small but comfortable kitchen. And through all this, I’ve truly learned that the best recipes in the world are made with lots of love and care.

Can plants grow on the moon? Here’s the good news. Scientists at the University of Florida have grown plants in soil from the moon.
The moon soil was collected by NASA’s astronauts over 50 years ago. The soil is so valuable that it took the scientists 11 years to get NASA’s agreement to use it. NASA didn’t give them much soil-just 12g. Some of the soil was taken from the top layer (层) of the moon’s surface, and the rest came from deeper layers. The moon soil doesn’t have many nutrients—things that help plants grow. It has a large amount of iron(铁), and is full of tiny pieces of glass.
For their scientific test, the scientists chose a plant called thale cress (拟南芥), which can grow in very little soil. They got the moon soil wet with water mixed with nutrients. Then they added the seeds (种子). To compare, they also planted the seeds in volcanic ash (火山灰). After two days of watering, the scientists saw green plants in every soil layer. As time went on, the scientists began to notice differences. The plants grown in the moon soil weren’t as healthy as those grown in volcanic ash. They were smaller and grew more slowly. The plants grown in the top layer of moon soil did the worst of all.
By studying changes in the DNA of the plants grown in the moon soil, scientists may find new ways to help plants grow better on the moon. It is a huge step in realizing humans’ dream of living on the moon.
8. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Many nutrients can be found in the soil from the moon.
B. It was difficult for the scientists to get the moon soil.
C. NASA gave most of the moon soil to the scientists.
9. Why did the scientists choose thale cress?
A. It can live for a long time.
B. It can grow without water.
C. It doesn’t need too much soil.
10. How was the growth of the plants (from good to poor)?
a. the plants grown in volcanic ash
b. the plants grown in the top layer of moon soil
c. the plants grown in the deeper layer of moon soil
A. c>a>b B. b>a>c C. a>c>b
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards moon plants?
A. Positive. B. Negative. (消极的) C. Not mentioned.

In mid-April, young children in Zhejiang Province ran happily with colourful kites in big green rice fields. It was a school day, but the children were not in the classroom. Instead, they went outside for a fun learning trip in nature. One of them, six-year-old Xiao Rui proudly (骄傲地) showed his kite. He painted a fast car on it. “It feels great that I made something that can fly in the sky,” he said with a big smile. After flying kites, the children drew pictures and even made rice milk coffee. These fun activities are part of a program (项目) called Yuliwendao. This program helps children and families learn about farming life by doing hands-on (动手的) activities. Mr Jiang, who started the program, wants children to learn by doing, not just by reading books. “Kids learn best when they touch, see, and try things,” he says. Many children in cities don’t know how rice grows. Now they can walk in the fields, feel the land, and plant rice by themselves. “This helps them really understand where their food comes from,” says a teacher, Ms Wu. She noticed her students became braver and more curious (更勇敢且更好奇的) after these trips. The program is popular. Many families and schools come back again. Even some adults (成年人) join to enjoy nature and relax. “These trips are more than fun days,” Ms Wu says. “They connect city kids with the countryside and help them learn in a new way.”

Dear teachers and students, Good morning! As 2025 passes and 2026 arrives, I’ve set New Year’s resolutions to improve myself.
For health, I’ll exercise three times a week—jogging or playing basketball—to stay fit. In study, I’ll take careful notes in class and ask teachers questions promptly. I’ll also read one English storybook monthly to boost my language skills. For hobbies, I’ll learn the guitar: 20 minutes of daily practice, aiming to play a simple song at the school party.
I’ll try my best to keep these promises and grow better.
