Mindful eating doesn’t come naturally to me. I’d developed the habit of doing several things at once, like eating and reading. It felt like dead time not to use the chance to kill two birds with one stone. I’ve been ashamed of eating a really healthy diet while hardly noticing it.
It took an 11-year-old to truly show me what eating mindfully looks like. Many years ago, when my daughter came home after her first day at secondary school, I fired a lot of questions at her: “Did you make new friends?”, “Were the teachers nice?” completely focusing on a cheese sandwich, she looked at me pointedly, “Mummy, I’ll tell you all about it in a bit. I just want to enjoy eating this sandwich quietly.” So I kept my mouth shut and watched her close her eyes, smile and “Mmm” as she chewed. There was a strong antithesis between how we ate.
We’re so used to reducing time that we’ve downgraded eating to something to be squeezed in (挤出时间) while we’re doing something else. Our pick-and-go culture encourages eating in a rush — the quicker, the better. All too often, we end up wolfing down a few biscuits between calls as something to keep us going. But there’s a huge downside to our disconnected eating. When you don’t fully experience your food, you don’t pay attention to whether you’re hungry or not, or full or not.
Our social media feeds are flooded with healthy diets and there’s no end of focus on the quality of our food. But there’s little focus on how we eat it and actually that makes all the difference. So let’s turn our attention to eating slowly, mindfully and with enjoyment. Here’s a challenge for you: Can you practice eating at least one meal a day without any distractions? No smartphone, no TV, no radio, no newspapers, no magazines? You might well feel uneasy about it at first, but keep trying
4 What’s the author’s primary view on doing other things while eating?
A. It stressed people out. B. It ruined food joy.
C. It helped improve focus. D. It was time-saving.
5. What does the underlined word “antithesis” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Similarity. B. Balance. C. Contrast. D. Connection.
6. What may disconnected eating lead to?
A. A practice of overeating.
B. A habit of eating fast food.
C. Awareness of food quality.
D. Addiction to a busy lifestyle.
7. What can we infer about eating from the last paragraph?
A. Eating styles require more attention.
B. Technology simplifies mindful eating.
C. Modern ways of eating face challenges.
D. Mindful eating outweighs food quality.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. A

Rather than plastic, Steve Davies — a board designer based in Porthcawl, Wales, is developing a surfboard made from mycelia (菌丝体).
According to Davies, more than 400,000 boards are made each year. A 2022 report noted that the global market for surfboards reached $2.2 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $3.2 billion by 2027. But about 80% of boards are not friendly to the environment, which will become more of a problem as the market grows. Many boards are made from plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down.
“And even when it does break down, it can go into fish’s ecosystem and gradually increase, so it means that humans will end up eating this plastic,” Davies said.
Davies made his first surfboard in 2020, but the experience showed him how many harmful materials went into the process of making each board. During his final year at Cardiff Metropolitan University, he started looking into mycelia and making his beloved sport environment-friendly.
“Starting off by collecting substrates (底物) was very convenient for me. With my family owning a farm with horses, I was quickly able to collect substrate materials in the form of horse bedding, to allow the mycelium to grow in,” Davies explained. “This gave me an idea to start the surfboard business — growing surfboards on a farm near the beach and using waste materials from that very same farm, cutting down the transport of materials, and therefore cutting down carbon given out into the environment.”
“In the right conditions, we will grow a mycelium board in around 21 days,” Davies said. “The dream would be to make it the new standard. Connecting with nature would be the new design rule and a lot of things like that would be really cool. We’re using the sea and we should give back to the sea.”
8. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 mainly show?
A. Going surfing costs a lot of money.
B. Surfing is popular with young people.
C. Designing surfboards is good business.
D. Making eco-friendly surfboards is necessary.
9. Why does Davies mention “fish’s ecosystem”?
A. To explain a rule of fish’s ecosystem.
B. To compare fish’s and human’s ecosystem.
C. To make a guess about human’s eating habits.
D. To present a reason for making green surfboards.
10. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Why Davies loves to design surfboards.
B. What makes Davies’ surfboard business possible.
C. Why Davies wants to study mycelia at university.
D. What causes Davies to make surfboards with mycelia.
11. What can be inferred from Davies’ words in the last paragraph?
A. He wishes more surfboards to be green.
B. He dreams of creating cooler surfboards.
C. He loves to get design ideas from the sea.
D. He hopes to succeed in selling surfboards.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据文章第三段中的“And even when it does break down, it can go into fish’s ecosystem and gradually increase, so it means that humans will end up eating this plastic(而且即使它分解了,它也会进入鱼的生态系统并逐渐增加,这意味着人类最终会吃到这些塑料)”可知,Davies提到“鱼的生态系统”是为了说明塑料分解后进入鱼的生态系统,最终可能通过食物链进入人体,从而强调生产绿色冲浪板的重要性。因此,选项D“To present a reason for making green surfboards(提出生产绿色冲浪板的原因)”符合题意。故选D。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第五段中的“Starting off by collecting substrates (底物) was very convenient for me. With my family owning a farm with horses, I was quickly able to collect substrate materials in the form of horse bedding, to allow the mycelium to grow in(从收集底物开始对我来说非常方便。我家有一个养马的农场,我很快就能够以马垫的形式收集底物材料,让菌丝体在里面生长)”以及“This gave me an idea to start the surfboard business—growing surfboards on a farm near the beach and using waste materials from that very same farm, cutting down the transport of materials, and therefore cutting down carbon given out into the environment(这给了我一个开始冲浪板生意的想法——在海滩附近的农场种植冲浪板,并使用同一农场的废料,减少材料的运输,从而减少排放到环境中的碳)”可知,本段主要讲述了Davies如何利用家庭农场的资源来开展他的冲浪板生意,包括收集底物材料、利用农场废料等,使得他的冲浪板生意成为可能。因此,选项B“What makes Davies’ surfboard business possible(是什么让Davies的冲浪板生意成为可能)”符合题意。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“The dream would be to make it the new standard. Connecting with nature would be the new design rule and a lot of things like that would be really cool. We’re using the sea and we should give back to the sea(梦想是让它成为新的标准。与自然联系将成为新的设计规则,很多这样的事情都会很酷。我们正在利用海洋,我们应该回馈海洋)”可知,Davies希望他的菌丝体冲浪板能够成为新的标准,强调与自然联系的设计理念,并表达了对回馈海洋的愿望。由此可以推断出,他希望更多的冲浪板能够环保、绿色。因此,选项A“He wishes more surfboards to be green.(他希望更多的冲浪板是绿色的)”符合题意。故选A。

In the digital era, where social media floods with ceaseless sharing, 26-year-old illustrator Lina from Hangzhou stands as a striking example. She regularly posts artworks and travel snapshots on Instagram but seldom replies to comments or engages in private conversations. “I love sharing fragments (碎片) of my life, yet building deep connections with strangers feels emotionally exhausting”, she admits. Lina’s attitude represents a growing trend among today’s youth: light socializing, a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.
Sociologist Min Li observes that social media, once a hub (中心) for developing relationships, has changed into a “self-showcase” platform for the younger generation. Instead of seeking active interactions, they share content like scenic photos or daily routines, with little expectation of feedback. Actions such as casually unfollowing, blocking strangers or using 24-hour disappearing posts show their wish to avoid burdensome “emotional labor” from shallow virtual ties. This shift comes from their desire to escape overwhelming pressure from empty digital interactions.
While critics dismiss light socializing as a sign of “emotional coldness”, it actually reflects a thoughtful adaptation. Psychologist Lu Chen argues that by embracing this approach, young people regain control over their online space — sharing freely without the anxiety of meeting others’ expectations. Even social platforms have evolved to meet this need: many now offer “silent modes”, such as hidden interaction records and one-way posting features, acknowledging the widespread acceptance of light socializing.
In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement. This trend shows the younger generation’s maturity in safeguarding their mental well-being, representing a forward-looking and thoughtful approach to modern social interactions.
12. What does Lina do on social media?
A. She only posts artworks.
B. She shares life but skips deep chats.
C. She never replies to comments.
D. She focuses on building deep online bonds.
13. According to Min Li, what has social media become for young people now?
A. A center for deep relationships.
B. A platform for personal display.
C. A tool to seek frequent interactions.
D. A space to reduce pressure by virtual ties.
14. What can we infer about “light socializing”?
A. It encourages safe online engagement.
B. It makes young people emotionally cold.
C. It relies mainly on platforms’ silent modes.
D. It abandons social bonds to protect mental health.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Keep Silent Mode On
B. Keep the Digital Distance
C. Social Media: “Self-showcase” Platform
D. Emotional Coldness: Online Life’s Secret

When we learn a language, the goal is often to be able to have conversations with other people. But here’s a question that a lot of people ask online: does reading help us with our speaking?
Speaking, like writing, is an active skill, because you’re producing something when you speak and write. ____16____ That’s because you’re receiving the information and trying to understand it. It’s obvious that written language is quite different from spoken language. For this reason, some learners believe reading won’t have much of an effect on their speaking skills. ____17____
But many other learners see reading as an important part of their language journey. A 2016 study of English students in Bangladesh found 80% thought that reading had improved their speaking. ____18____ And experts say this is one of the most important things: reading can add words to our vocabulary, and show us how words and grammar are used in context.
____19____ Teachers often put reading into two types: extensive reading and intensive reading (精读). The goal of extensive reading is enjoyment, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand every word. With extensive reading, students usually choose the stories or books they want to read. ____20____ They choose stories or texts that may be used for particular language-learning goals. Research has shown that both types of reading can be really useful in helping students speak better by improving their fluency, vocabulary and understanding.
A. They say that reading isn’t very useful.
B. Intensive reading may be led by teachers.
C. Reading and listening are totally different.
D. Reading can help improve your speaking skills.
E. Teachers are of great importance in English learning.
F. And 75% said it had improved their imagination or vocabulary.
G. There are different kinds of reading, each offering different benefits.

A Why Davies loves to design surfboards.

B It makes young people emotionally cold.
