My brother’s wedding brought us to Mexico City. It is a beautiful place with amazing food, but it also has an alarming crime rate, including kidnappings of tourists. Before arriving, my sister-in-law-to-be, who lived there, told me something important. “Never get in a red-and-gold cab. They overcharge you, steal your money, and make you empty the ATM,” she said. I nodded in agreement.
On the day of the wedding, I asked the porter to call us an official cab, a white one. But what arrived was a slightly old red-and-gold cab. My mother and me needed to get to the wedding, and I have a completely unhealthy faith in people. So far, it had paid off.
We had been updating my husband the whole time, but it was time to tell him we were on our way. “We are in a red-and-gold cab with a driver who doesn’t speak a word of English. I don’t know where we’re going, and I don’t know if we’re safe. He is a crazy driver, and I don’t even know if he knows our destination.” After my mother got off the phone, I took hold of the conversation. “Mom, we have a great driver. He is going to get us there in time for the pictures and the wedding.”
There wasn’t much conversation until I said, “Here we are, Mom.” That is when the driver said in perfect English, “Is it your son’s wedding you are going to?”
My mother’s face turned many shades of red, but I turned many “shades of relieved” that my faith in humans had helped us. The driver congratulated my mother and gave me a knowing wink. We made the pictures just in time. It seemed that it was the power of positive thinking that saved us from a potential disaster.

OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy imagines a world in which artificial intelligence bots can be made into subject matter experts that are “deeply passionate, great at teaching, infinitely patient and fluent in all of the world’s languages.” Through this vision, the bots would be available to “personally tutor all 8 billion of us on demand.”
And he’s not alone. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and University of California, Berkeley computer scientist Stuart Russell also dream of bots becoming on-demand tutors, guidance counselors and perhaps even replacements for human teachers.
“AI certainly may enhance aspects of education, but history shows that bots probably won’t be an effective substitute for humans. As a researcher focused on AI and other new writing technologies, I’ve seen many cases where high-tech ‘solutions’ for teaching problems fizzled.” Andrej said.
Yet technologies for personal learning aren’t new. Exactly 100 years ago, inventor Sidney Pressey unveiled an “automatic teacher” made out of typewriter parts. In the 1950s, the psychologist B. F. Skinner designed “teaching machines.” In both cases, students didn’t learn much — they also found these nonhuman approaches boring.
More recently, the world of education saw the rise and fall of “massive open online courses,” or MOOCs. Again, students lost interest and logged off. Other web-based efforts have appeared, including course platforms like Coursera and Outlier. But the same problem persists: There’s no genuine interactivity to keep students engaged.
Now comes the proliferation of AI-fueled platforms. Some tech leaders believe bots can customize teaching and replace human teachers and tutors, but they're likely to face the same problem as these earlier attempts: Students are unlikely to be inspired and excited the way they can be by a live instructor.
The idea of an AI tutor in every pocket sounds exciting, but history reminds us to keep a close eye on whether students are actually learning. The promises of personalized learning are no guarantee for positive results.
28. Why does the author mention the famous figures in the first two paragraphs?
A. To present the super power of AI.
B. To stress the role of human teachers.
C. To emphasize the importance of education.
D. To demonstrate the potential problems of AI.
29. What does the underlined word “fizzled” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Failed. B. Worked. C. Appeared. D. Improved.
30. How does the author support his argument?
A. By quoting some experts. B. By giving some examples.
C By answering some questions. D. By analyzing some phenomena.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards AI tutors?
A. Approving. B. Cautious. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.
A 29. A 30. B 31. B

根据第一段“OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy imagines a world in which artificial intelligence bots can be made into subject matter experts that are “deeply passionate, great at teaching, infinitely patient and fluent in all of the world’s languages.” Through this vision, the bots would be available to “personally tutor all 8 billion of us on demand.” (OpenAI的联合创始人Andrej Karpathy构想了这样一个世界:人工智能机器人可以成为“充满激情、擅长教学、耐心无限、精通世界上所有语言”的学科专家。通过这一愿景,这些机器人将可以“按需为全球80亿人提供私人辅导”)”及第二段“And he’s not alone. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and University of California, Berkeley computer scientist Stuart Russell also dream of bots becoming on-demand tutors, guidance counselors and perhaps even replacements for human teachers. (不止他一人这么想,OpenAI首席执行官Sam Altman、可汗学院首席执行官Sal Khan、风险投资家Marc Andreessen和加州大学伯克利分校的计算机科学家Stuart Russell都梦想着机器人成为按需辅导老师、指导顾问,甚至取代人类教师)”可推知,作者提及这些知名人士是为了呈现“AI具备替代教师的强大能力”这一观点。故选A项。
根据第三段““AI certainly may enhance aspects of education, but history shows that bots probably won’t be an effective substitute for humans. As a researcher focused on AI and other new writing technologies, I’ve seen many cases where high-tech ‘solutions’ for teaching problems fizzled.” Andrej said. (Andrej说:“人工智能当然可能提高教育的各个方面,但历史表明,机器人可能不会成为人类的有效替代品。作为一名专注于人工智能和其他新写作技术的研究人员,我看到过很多用高科技“解决”教学问题的案例fizzled”)”可知,作者认为AI虽能辅助教育,但并非人类教师的有效替代,结合but表转折的逻辑可推知,fizzled意为“失败、落空”。故选A项。
根据第四段“Yet technologies for personal learning aren’t new. (然而,个性化学习技术并不新鲜。整整100年前,发明家Sidney Pressey展示了一款由打字机零件制成的“自动教师”。20世纪50年代,心理学家B. F. Skinner设计了“教学机器”。在这两种案例中,学生学到的东西不多,他们还觉得这些非人类的方式很无聊)”及第五段“More recently, the world of education saw the rise and fall of “massive open online courses,” or MOOCs. Again, students lost interest and logged off. (最近,教育界见证了“大规模开放在线课程(MOOCs)”的兴衰。学生们再次失去兴趣并退出了课程)”可推知,作者通过列举历史上类似的教学工具案例来支撑自己的论点。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The idea of an AI tutor in every pocket sounds exciting, but history reminds us to keep a close eye on whether students are actually learning. The promises of personalized learning are no guarantee for positive results. (口袋里装着AI家教的想法听起来很诱人,但历史提醒我们要密切关注学生是否真的在学习。个性化学习的承诺并不能保证带来积极的结果)”可知,作者认为AI家教虽听起来诱人,但需警惕其实际效果。由此推知,作者持谨慎的态度。故选B项。

On Earth Day-April 22 — the XPrize announced the winners of its Carbon Removal contest. A company called Mati Carbon won the $50 million prize. Their method is simple, but it could remove huge amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere and also help farmers grow more food.
In 2021, the Xprize Foundation group began a 4-year contest for the best ideas for removing more than 1,000 metric tons of CO2 in a year. Over 1,300 teams entered the contest. Last year, 20 finalists were chosen. The finalists used many different methods to remove carbon. But in April, Mati Carbon won the $50 million grand prize with a fairly simple idea.
The company uses a very common kind of volcanic rock called basalt. Basalt is used worldwide to construct roads and buildings. Companies that break up the basalt often have a fine powder of basalt left over that they can’t use.
Luckily, this is exactly what Mati Carbon needs. The company removes carbon by spreading this rock powder on farm fields. The powder pulls CO2 out of the water in the soil and stores it in a way that will last for thousands of years.
The results aren’t just good for the environment — they’re also good for the farmers. Farmers who use the basalt powder on their fields grow roughly 25% more food. In areas with poor soil, farmers can grow as much as 70% more. The rock dust also helps the soil hold water better, which is important in dry places.
Mati Carbon is already spreading basalt powder on farms in several countries, including India, Tanzania, and Zambia. So far, Mati Carbon has removed over 1,000 metric tons of CO2, but the company believes that number will grow rapidly.
Mati Carbon is a nonprofit company. It puts the powder on farmlands for free. To pay for this, the company sells “carbon credits”. Since Mati Carbon is removing pollution, large companies that create pollution buy credits to “offset” their pollution so that they can be “carbon neutral (碳中和)”.
32. What is Mati Carbon’s method mainly about?
A. Making the air clean. B. Creating new energy.
C. Increasing the crop production. D. Reducing CO2 in the atmosphere.
33. Which of the following can describe Mati Carbon’s using a fine powder of basalt?
A. Following a traditional way. B. Turning waste into treasure.
C. Challenging an impossible task. D. Creating something totally new.
34. What do we know about Mati Carbon’s effort?
A. It’s highly effective. B. It’s extremely difficult.
C. It produces no effects. D. It costs a lot of money.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mati Carbon Comes up a Way to Increase Crop Production.
B. Basalt Powder Helps Farmers and Reduces CO2 Emissions.
C. Simple But Powerful Idea Wins Carbon Removal XPrize.
D. Non-Profit’s Farm Technique Wins Environmental Contest.
D 33. B 34. A 35. C

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed over time. When a person has a growth mindset, they tend to see all experiences — positive and negative — as learning opportunities. ____36____. Instead, they’ll receive it as information to make their path forward more productive.
For example, consider a student who receives a C on their math midterm exam. With a growth mindset, this student may review the exam and seek help to understand the concepts they didn’t grasp. ____37____
The concept of a growth mindset comes from the research of Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist and Stanford University professor who studies success and motivation. She identified the concept when researching the differences between people (namely, students) who succeed and those who don’t. ____38____. Those with a growth mindset tended to find success more frequently and easily than those with a fixed mindset.
____39____. While a growth mindset embraces the possibility of growth and change, a fixed mindset believes that abilities are set and unchangeable. A person with a fixed mindset views setbacks as failures and may even attribute those failures to their inherent lack of talent.
Consider again the student who receives a C on their math midterm. With a fixed mindset, this student will see that grade as evidence that they are just not good at math and cannot, no matter how hard they try, grasp mathematical concepts.
____40____, adopting a growth mindset can be one of the most beneficial things you can do to enable your success. With a growth mindset, you’ll be mentally prepared to deal with challenges, enjoy the learning process, and see your progress, whether big or small.
A. If you are striving to achieve a goal
B. They won’t view a setback as a failure
C. When a person decides to change his mindset
D. A fixed mindset is the opposite of a growth mindset
E. One great difference between the two groups: their mindset
F. The first thing to do is trust that you can change your mindset
G. They may also look for opportunities to improve their grade further
B 37. G 38. E 39. D 40. A

上文“When a person has a growth mindset, they tend to see all experiences — positive and negative — as learning opportunities. (当一个人拥有成长型心态时,他们倾向于把所有的经历——积极的和消极的——都看作是学习的机会。)”提到,拥有成长型思维模式的人会将所有经历都视为学习机会。B项“他们不会将挫折视为失败”与上文逻辑连贯,进一步解释他们如何对待挫折,且与下文“Instead, they’ll receive it as information to make their path forward more productive. (相反,他们会把它作为一种信息来接受,使他们的前进道路更有成效。)”构成转折递进关系。故选B。
【37题详解】
上文“For example, consider a student who receives a C on their math midterm exam. With a growth mindset, this student may review the exam and seek help to understand the concepts they didn’t grasp. (例如,考虑一个学生在数学期中考试中得了C。有了成长型思维,这个学生可能会复习考试,并寻求帮助来理解他们没有掌握的概念。)”以数学考试为例,描述了成长型思维模式学生的做法:回顾考试并寻求帮助来理解未掌握的概念。G项“他们可能还会寻找机会进一步提高成绩”是对其行为的自然延续,展示了成长型思维模式的具体行动。故选G。
【38题详解】
上文“The concept of a growth mindset comes from the research of Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist and Stanford University professor who studies success and motivation. She identified the concept when researching the differences between people (namely, students) who succeed and those who don’t.
下文“(While a growth mindset embraces the possibility of growth and change, a fixed mindset believes that abilities are set and unchangeable. A person with a fixed mindset views setbacks as failures and may even attribute those failures to their inherent lack of talent. (成长心态拥抱成长和改变的可能性,而固定心态则认为能力是固定不变的。一个有固定心态的人把挫折看作是失败,甚至可能把这些失败归咎于他们天生缺乏天赋。)”开始详细描述“固定型思维模式”并与“成长型思维模式”形成对比。D项“固定型思维模式与成长型思维模式相反”是总起句,自然引出后文的对比说明。故选D。
【40题详解】
下文“adopting a growth mindset can be one of the most beneficial things you can do to enable your success. (采用成长型思维模式可能是让你获得成功的最有益的事情之一)”是在强调成长型思维对追求成功的作用。A 选项“如果你正在努力实现一个目标”以假设条件引出下文的建议,逻辑连贯,符合语境。故选 A 。

For Liam swimming was more than a sport; it was a fundamental part of his being. Each morning before school, he found comfort in the silence of the pool. This daily discipline had built not just his body but also his spirit, giving him a quiet confidence and a deep understanding of the water’s power and peace.
This inner calm was matched by a desire to help others. In school, he was the patient tutor who could explain complex maths in simple terms, and in his neighborhood, he was the reliable one who’d help carry groceries or fix a flat tire without a second thought. For Liam, assistance wasn’t a conscious choice but an instinctive (本能的) reaction, a response as natural as taking a breath. He never sought thanks; the simple act of making things right was its own reward.
Liam had always felt a connection to Crystal Lake. Ever since he was a child, its deep, cool waters had been his escape from the world. Now, at sixteen, he was a familiar sight, swimming laps with a steady rhythm almost every afternoon. He found a peculiar peace in the weightless silence beneath the surface, a world away from the noise onshore.
It was a perfect summer afternoon at Crystal Lake. The water was cool and inviting, reflecting the clear blue sky. Liam was enjoying a swim, moving effortlessly away from the crowded beach towards the quieter, deeper waters. He was a strong swimmer, proud of his swimming skill.
As he treaded water, catching his breath, a sudden splash and a choked cry shattered the peace. A younger boy, who had been playing on an inflatable raft (充气筏), had fallen off and was now flailing (挥动) wildly. The boy’s panic was obvious; he was gasping for air, swallowing water instead.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Without hesitation, Liam swam to the boy quickly.

Sam’s family rushed to Liam and Sam as they collapsed on the sand, gasping for air.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without hesitation, Liam swam to the boy quickly. Approaching from behind, he secured the struggling child with a firm grip, keeping both their heads above water. The boy, later known as Sam, flailed his arms frantically, pushing against Liam and dragging them both under. Liam remained calm. He kicked his legs hard, pushing through the water, and spoke in a low, steady voice, “Easy now, I’ve got you.” Each stroke was a battle against the boy’s panic and the water’s resistance. Gradually, his reassuring presence and strong technique eased Sam’s terror, allowing them to move steadily toward safety. As they neared the shore, alert bystanders splashed out to meet them, helping guide the exhausted pair onto the beach.
Sam’s family rushed to Liam and Sam as they collapsed on the sand, gasping for air. Sam’s mother knelt and gathered her son into a tearful embrace. Then, with her eyes full of gratitude, she turned and clasped Liam’s hands tightly. Sam’s father placed a steadying hand on Liam’s shoulder, his voice thick with emotion as he simply said, “Thank you.” For Liam, the exhaustion that weighed down his limbs was already fading, replaced by a familiar, quiet warmth. Seeing Sam safe and feeling the family’s profound relief, he understood this was why he swam — not just for the peace it gave him, but for the strength it allowed him to share with others. Helping had always been his instinct, and today, that instinct had found its deepest meaning.

My mother’s face turned many shades of red but I turned many “shades of relieved” that my faith in humans had helped us. The driver congratulated my mother and gave me a knowing wink. We made the pictures just in time. It seemed that it was the power of positive thinking that saved us from a potential disaster.
24. What did the author’s sister-in-law-to-be try to do?

C. She made a wrong choice. D. She made a wrong judgment.
26. How did the author’s mother feel after the driver spoke English?
A. Frustrated. B. Concerned. C. Embarrassed. D. Disappointed.
27. What does the author intend to tell us by writing the text?
A. Have faith in other people. B. Get on well with strangers.
C. Broaden horizons by travelling. D. Dare to experience new things.

C. By answering some questions. D. By analyzing some phenomena.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards AI tutors?
A. Approving. B. Cautious. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.

____40____, adopting a growth mindset can be one of the most beneficial things you can do to enable your success. With a growth mindset, you’ll be mentally prepared to deal with challenges, enjoy the learning process, and see your progress, whether big or small.

C. When a person decides to change his mindset
D. A fixed mindset is the opposite of a growth mindset
E. One great difference between the two groups: their mindset

For Liam, swimming was more than a sport; it was a fundamental part of his being.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Without hesitation, Liam swam to the boy quickly.
