I was in the car with my driving coach to get my license. At a crossing, a car made a rolling stop past a stop sign and drove past us. The coach pointed out, “Don’t do what that guy just did!” I looked at the other driver: It was my dad.
When I moved to a new house, I kept hearing my name being shouted, but every time I looked around or out of the window, I saw no one. For months I thought the house was haunted by a ghost but it was actually my neighbor, Alan, calling his dog that had the same name as me!
My mom saved a dog from a heavy rainstorm. A few hours later, my dad came from work and asked, “Why is there a fox on a leash (牵引绳) in our backyard?”
I was probably around 5 years old and just learning to read. So the family went to a restaurant and we were waiting to be seated. My dad was holding me. I got eye level with this thing that read “press” so I did. It was the fire alarm. I emptied the place.
1. What’s the name of Alan’s dog?
A. Oliver. B. Liam. C. Alan. D. Mark.
2. What did Mark do in the restaurant?
A. He cleaned the tables. B. He waited in line quietly.
C. He did some reading. D. He pressed the fire alarm.

An area that provides sources (来源) of food for Asian elephants is open to the animal guests in Jinghong city, southwest China’s Yunnan province. Covering a total area of more than 1,000 mu (1 hectare is 15 mu), the project is set to provide the elephants with different kinds of food and improve their habitat (栖息地), said Zha Wei, an official at the forestry and grassland bureau of Jinghong.
The area has been planted mainly with Thysanolaena maxima (棕叶芦) and wild banana, the elephants’ main food sources. “The project is expected to help reduce the damage caused to villagers and their plants by the elephants while the animals are looking for food in villages,” said Zha.
An adult Asian elephant eats 200 kilograms of food each day. However, there are more and more trees in the forest, which increases the density (密度) of plants in forests, it has become more difficult for the elephants to walk in the forest to find food. This partly explains why the wild Asian elephants often leave their protected areas and break into the neighboring villages for food in recent years.
“By building up the area with food sources, we hope to allow more elephants to stay inside the area so that they won’t break into the neighboring villages and cause human-elephant conflicts (冲突) said Zha. “As long as there are enough food sources, the elephants will go back to their natural habitat,” he added.
Asian elephants are under first-class state protection in China. There are 185 wild Asian elephants in Jinghong now, an increase of 105 from the end of the last century, and this population continues to grow. Moreover, the area for the elephants in Jinghong has covered 3,500 square kilometers.
12. What’s the purpose of setting the project in Jinghong city?
A. To improve the Jinghong city. B. To provide elephants with food.
C. To make the city well-known. D. To protect the forests in villages.
13. Why do elephants look for food in villages according to Paragraph 3?
A. Because there is no food in their living area. B. Because villagers’ plants are more delicious.
C. Because it’s hard to walk in forests for food. D. Because the protected areas are broken down.
14. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The achievements of the project. B. Future plans of Jinghong city.
C. Poor situations of wild elephants. D. The challenge of Asian elephants.
15. Which part of a newspaper is the passage probably taken from?
A. Health. B. Education. C. Sports. D. Nature.

What to Write in a Diary
Diaries are wonderful objects that allow you to record your feelings, dreams or ideas, and reflect on daily life in a safe, private space. If you aren’t sure what to write about, there are some basic tricks you can use to help your writing.
※Write about the events of your day. Think about everything that happened that day and record any feelings that are unforgettable to you. Feel free to choose any topic you want as you’re writing about the day’s events. For example, you could write about the English exam you took at school that day. ___16___ Do you wish you had studied more? Are you nervous to receive your grade?
※Think about your goals for the future and how to achieve them. ___17___ Then, go through each item on the list and write in detail about your plan to achieve the goal. For example, you could write about short-term goals like studying for your maths exam or running twice a week. Long-term goals would be something like choosing a college or your future job.
※Explore your favorite subjects or hobbies in-depth. Make a list of topics that you love or your favorite hobbies. ___18___ The subjects can be anything you want, as long as they interest and inspire you. Then, choose one item from the list and write a diary about it. For example, if you love sports, write about why you love a sport, your favorite teams, and your dream jobs.
※___19___ Don’t worry about providing much information about your feelings, just focus on describing how you feel. Work on one thought or feeling at a time and find out the reasons. For example, if you’re feeling sad, you can write a diary about why you feel that way. We asked 326 readers when they usually write diaries, 50% of them said when they feel sad.
A. Write down your feelings or mood.
B. Are you feeling good about the exam?
C. Write down the meanings of famous sayings.
D. You might love movies, sports, food, travel, or art.

An area that provides sources (来源) of food for Asian elephants is open to the animal guests in Jinghong city southwest China’s Yunnan province.
