Around the world, grandmas are usually seen as kind, calm older women who love quiet activities. But most people forget they also have hobbies, many of which they can finally focus on later in life. A 68-year-old Chinese woman called “Grandma Liu” is the best example of this. The senior can often be seen skating at her local skate park with grace and skill.
Grandma Liu got into skateboarding in February 2022, when she went with her daughter to pick a skateboard. After hearing about the abilities and skills that make up this extreme sport, she felt interested. Most old ladies wouldn’t try this hobby, but she gave it a go.
“I can’t sit still, and most of my friends are young,” she told China Youth Daily. “One day, my daughter’s friend asked her to buy a skateboard. My daughter said, ‘Mum, let me show you something new.’ I answered, ‘OK!’ When I saw the skateboard, I thought it looked really fun. I tried it once and didn’t fall. Then my daughter encouraged me to learn.”
At first, she often lost her balance, fell and got hurt, but that didn’t stop her. Even with these problems, Grandma Liu got back on the skateboard every time. With practice, she learned to skate well in her own stylish way. Other skaters call her “Chasing Wind Girl”. Though she skates well now, she always wears protective gear (设备). A fall at her age could hurt more than it would for a young person.
Grandma Liu, who lives in Chengdu, Sichuan, has grown into a star on Chinese social media thanks to her fearlessness. What she appreciates most is skating with her daughter — it has made their relationship stronger. Her love for skateboarding shows that curiosity and passion (热情) have no age. “Don’t let others box you in. Be a multi-talented granny!” she says. “Grannies can be both sweet and cool!”
24. What first made Grandma Liu interested in skateboarding?
A. Her daughter’s encouragement.
B. The fun of trying it without falling.
C. The introduction of the extreme sport.
D. Her desire to stay active like young friends.
25. Why does Grandma Liu always wear protective gear while skating?
A. To look cool. B. To follow rules.
C. To skate well in the park. D. To avoid serious injuries.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Grandma Liu?
A. Shy but creative. B. Strict but curious.
C. Quiet and traditional. D. Brave and determined.
27. What message does the story seem to show?
A. It’s never too old to follow one’s passion.
B. Social media can make people famous.
C. Skateboarding is a fun and safe sport.
D. Family support is key to learning new things.

Trees are the earth’s lungs — taking in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and giving out oxygen. They are very important to the planet’s whole ecosystem. Now scientists from NASA and the Smithsonian are working together on another way in which trees can help people, SciTechDaily reported. It turns out that tracking the color of tree leaves near active volcanoes with satellites can be an early warning for eruptions.
Early discovery of volcanic eruptions has always been a challenge. Traditionally, volcanologists have depended on findings, ground changes, and gas emissions (排放物) to try to catch an eruption before it happens. Also, scientists have long known that volcanoes give off carbon dioxide when magma (岩浆) moves up from under the surface.
However, according to a NASA news report, monitoring that carbon dioxide is a tricky matter. Many active volcanoes are in faraway, hard-to-reach mountain areas. This makes monitoring them take a lot of work, cost much money, and sometimes dangerous.
Scientists have long known that changing tree leaves near active volcanoes could be an early sign of a coming eruption. Trees that take in carbon dioxide from magma become greener and stronger. And they can be monitored from space.
“The whole idea is to find something we can measure (测量) instead of carbon dioxide directly. This can show us changes in volcano emissions,” Dr. Robert Bogue, a volcano expert from McGill University, said in the news report.
To take these measurements, NASA worked with the Smithsonian. They used NASA satellites and airborne tools from the Airborne Validation Unified Experiment: Land to Ocean (AVUELO). The pictures and related information from these tools help them see the areas around active volcanoes more clearly.
It’s clear that monitoring carbon dioxide levels around volcanoes is a good way to track possible eruptions. Thanks to NASA and the Smithsonian’s work together, this method can be more effective. We hope it will save more valuable lives.
28. Why does the author mention “Trees are the earth’s lungs” in the beginning?
A. To compare trees to human lungs.
B. To explain why trees take in carbon dioxide.
C. To ‘stress the importance of forest protection.
D. To introduce trees’ new role in volcano monitoring.
29. What does the underlined word “tricky” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Simple. B. Difficult. C. Serious. D. Confusing.
30. What can we infer from Dr. Robert Bogue’s words?
A. Tree color changes are easy to track. B. Volcano emissions are unimportant.
C. Satellites can’t monitor carbon dioxide. D. Tree leaves are the only monitoring tool.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the new monitoring method?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unconcerned. D. Disappointed.
D
Sleep is one of the most basic parts of life. All animals and humans sleep. We have long known that sleep also plays a key part in physical and emotional health. Now, researchers from the University of South Australia have published a new study in Journal of Neuroscience. It looks at how sleep helps people learn languages. This is good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language.
People often divide sleep into light sleep and deep sleep in daily life. According to previous research, sleep goes through two main stages: REM sleep and non-REM sleep. REM sleep usually starts about one and a half hours after someone falls asleep. During this time, brain activity rises to a level similar to that when the person is awake — this is when dreams happen. In non-REM sleep, by contrast, brain activity is low.
One might think memory and learning happen when the brain is very active. But in fact, the researchers found the opposite is true.
The university’s news report says the researchers did an experiment with 35 native English speakers. These people were learning a small language called Mini Pinyan. It is based on Mandarin but uses English sentence structures and grammar rules.
Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days, while the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab so that the researchers could record their brainwaves. Both groups were tested on their knowledge of Mini Pinyan the next morning. The group that had slept soon after they studied did much better than those who had not.
“Sleep is not just restful; it’s an active state that changes the brain,” Dr. Scott Cousins, a researcher at the university, said in the news report.
This study is important not only for people learning a new language. It could also help people with language problems, like aphasia (失语症) or autism (自闭症). Now there’s one more reason to get a good night’s sleep.
32. What does the new study of the University of South Australia focus on?
A. Sleep stages of humans.
B. Physical advantages of sleep.
C. The effect of sleep on daily life.
D. The role of sleep in language learning.
33. In which stage of sleep is the brain thought to be active?
A. Light sleep. B. REM sleep. C. Deep sleep. D. Non-REM sleep.
34. What was a key difference between the two groups in the experiment?
A. The time of their tests.
B. The languages they learned.
C. When to sleep after learning.
D. How to comment on physical health.
35. Which best summarizes Dr. Scott Cousins’ view on sleep?
A. The brain is inactive in one’s sleep.
B. Sleep is mainly for resting the body.
C. Sleep actively leads to brain changes.
D. Brain activity is unrelated to memory during sleep.

Now more teenagers care about how their bodies look, mainly because of the unreal “perfect body” pictures on social media. Influenced by these misleading pictures, many teens turn to extreme weight-loss ways like going without meals or taking diet pills (药片). ____36____ To help teenagers break the unhealthy lifestyle, the following useful tips are worth learning.
Setting fitness goals can help you stay healthy physically and mentally. Being healthy is about feeling strong and energetic. Fitness goals last longer than quick weight-loss plans. They make your heart healthier, build strong muscles, and help you feel better in mind. For example, you could plan to run 5 kilometers in 30 minutes or do 20 push-ups one after another. ____37____
Eating well is also important. You don’t have to give up all your favorite foods. Just make wise choices most of the time. ____38____ If you want something sweet, choose dark chocolate instead of a sugary cake. Adding salads or fruits to your meals helps keep your diet balanced. This way, you won’t feel unhappy because you can’t eat what you like, which stops you from eating too much later.
A positive attitude is also very important. Social media is full of edited photos of stars and models, but these images are often unreal. ____39____ Instead, focus on your own strong points. Everyone has special features that make them unique.
____40____ Instead of criticizing (批评) your body for not being “perfect”, celebrate its abilities — like dancing, climbing stairs easily, or getting better quickly from illness. Writing down things you appreciate about yourself will improve your long-term happiness and health. Remember, every body is different, and that’s completely fine.
A. Avoid comparing your body with theirs.
B. Eating less is one of the best ways to lose weight.
C. Be friendly to yourself and practice positive self-talk.
D. Achieving these goals makes you proud and more confident.
E. You should choose low-fat foods to keep your body in shape.
F. If you want a burger, eat it with a healthy dish like vegetables.
G. However, these methods can do long-term harm to their health.

Lily hurried into the City Library, holding an exam schedule. It was her last chance to borrow Advanced English Grammar — the only book that could help with her upcoming test. The shelf where the book should be placed was empty. She let out a sigh (叹气), her eyes filled with disappointment.
Just then, a soft voice stopped her thoughts. “Excuse me, is this yours?” A boy with messy brown hair held out a notebook. Lily looked down—her name was written on the cover. She’d dropped it in a rush. “Thank you so much! I can’t believe I lost this,” she said, feeling relaxed.
The boy smiled. “I saw you looking for something earlier. Maybe I can help?” Lily explained about the grammar book. His smile faded (淡去) a little. “I have that book, but I need it for my test too. It’s the last copy in the library.”
Lily’s heart felt heavy. They stood quietly for a moment, with the library’s soft noise around them. Suddenly, the boy’s eyes lit up. “Wait, I made detailed notes on every chapter. If you want, we can share the book and my notes. I usually study here every afternoon.”
Lily looked at him in surprise. “Really? That would be wonderful!” They exchanged phone numbers, and the boy handed her a page of notes. “Meet me here tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., okay? The book will be ready.”
The next day, Lily arrived on time, holding a pack of her mom’s homemade cookies. She saw the boy sitting at a corner table, the grammar book open in front of him. But as she walked over, she noticed his face was pale, and he kept putting a hand on his stomach.

The teacher set up a project team, including lily and other students, hoping to help her. After getting the task, lily was very nervous, but her teammates were really nice. They went straight to the library to do the research. During the process, they listened to her ideas and even invited her to a local cafe afterward. Over time, lily began feeling like part of the group. However, a week before the project deadline, SHE noticed a big error in her research. At first, lilly pretended not to notice her mistake. SHE was afraid the others would be angry with her, but SHE couldn't risk letting everyone fail, so SHE gathered her courage and told the truth. To her surprise, her teammates not only praised her honesty, but also thank her for catching the mistake in time. They joined hands to fix the problem and ended up getting the best grade in the class. Better yet, their friendship continued long after the project was over.
C 25. D 26. D 27. A

根据文章第二段中的“After hearing about the abilities and skills that make up this extreme sport, she felt interested.(在了解了构成这项极限运动的能力和技巧后,她产生了兴趣。)”
根据文章第四段中的“Though she skates well now, she always wears protective gear (设备). A fall at her age could hurt more than it would for a young person.(虽然她现在滑得很好,但她总是穿着防护装备。在她这个年纪摔倒,受到的伤害可能比年轻人更大。)”可知,刘奶奶在滑滑板时总是穿着防护装备是为了避免受到严重的伤害,因为在她的年龄摔倒可能会比年轻人受到更严重的伤害。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中的“At first, she often lost her balance, fell and got hurt, but that didn’t stop her. Even with these problems, Grandma Liu got back on the skateboard every time.(起初,她经常失去平衡,摔倒受伤,但这并没有阻止她。即使有这些问题,刘奶奶每次都会重新站上滑板。)”以及最后一段中的“Grandma Liu, who lives in Chengdu, Sichuan, has grown into a star on Chinese social media thanks to her fearlessness.(住在四川成都的刘奶奶,因其无所畏惧而在中国社交媒体上成为明星。)”
根据文章最后一段中的“Her love for skateboarding shows that curiosity and passion (热情) have no age.(她对滑板运动的热爱表明,好奇心和热情没有年龄限制。)” A“It’s never too old to follow one’s passion.(追随自己的热情永远都不晚)”符合题意。故选A。

Trees are the earth’s lungs — taking in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and giving out oxygen. They are very important to the planet’s whole ecosystem. Now, scientists from NASA and the Smithsonian are working together on another way in which trees can help people, SciTechDaily reported.
A. Simple. B. Difficult. C. Serious. D. Confusing.
30 What can we infer from Dr. Robert Bogue’s words?
A. Tree color changes are easy to track. B. Volcano emissions are unimportant.
C. Satellites can’t monitor carbon dioxide. D. Tree leaves are the only monitoring tool.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the new monitoring method?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Unconcerned. D. Disappointed.
D 29. B 30. A 31. B

根据第一段“Trees are the earth’s lungs — taking in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and giving out oxygen. They are very important to the planet’s whole ecosystem. Now, scientists from NASA and the Smithsonian are working together on another way in which trees can help people, SciTechDaily reported. It turns out that tracking the color of tree leaves near active volcanoes with satellites can be an early warning for eruptions.(树木是地球的“肺”——它们从空气中吸收二氧化碳(CO2),并释放出氧气。它们对地球的整个生态系统都非常重要。据《科学科技日报》报道,美国国家航空航天局(NASA)和史密森学会的科学家们正在合作探索树木还能以另一种方式为人类服务的方法。结果表明,利用卫星监测活跃火山附近树叶的颜色,可以作为火山爆发的早期预警信号)”可知,作者提及该内容是为了引出树木在火山监测中的新角色。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“Many active volcanoes are in faraway, hard-to-reach mountain areas. This makes monitoring them take a lot of work, cost much money, and sometimes dangerous.(许多活火山位于偏远且难以到达的山区。这使得对这些火山的监测工作量巨大、成本高昂,有时甚至存在危险)”可知,监测火山释放的二氧化碳并非易事。由此可推测tricky在此处意为“困难的”,与difficult含义相近。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Scientists have long known that changing tree leaves near active volcanoes could be an early sign of a coming eruption. Trees that take in carbon dioxide from magma become greener and stronger. And they can be monitored from space.(科学家们早就知道,在活跃火山附近发生变化的树木叶子可能是火山即将喷发的早期迹象。那些从岩浆中吸收二氧化碳的树木会变得更加翠绿、更加健壮。而且这些树木的情况还能通过卫星进行监测)”可知,树木颜色变化是易追踪的,可作为替代监测二氧化碳的事物。故选A。

A The time of their tests.

根据上文“Now more teenagers care about how their bodies look, mainly because of the unreal “perfect body” pictures on social media. Influenced by these misleading pictures, many teens turn to extreme weight-loss ways like going without meals or taking diet pills
根据上文“Setting fitness goals can help you stay healthy physically and mentally. Being healthy is about feeling strong and energetic. Fitness goals last longer than quick weight-loss plans. They make your heart healthier, build strong muscles, and help you feel better in mind. For example, you could plan to run 5 kilometers in 30 minutes or do 20 push-ups one after another.(设定健身目标有助于你保持身心健康。
根据上文“Eating well is also important. You don’t have to give up all your favorite foods. Just make wise choices most of the time.(合理饮食也很重要。你不必放弃所有你喜爱的食物,只需在大多数时候做出明智的选择即可)”以及下文“If you want something sweet, choose dark chocolate instead of a sugary cake. Adding salads or fruits to your meals helps keep your diet balanced. This way, you won’t feel unhappy because you can’t eat what you like, which stops you from eating too much later.(如果你想吃点甜食,那就选择黑巧克力而非甜蛋糕。
根据上文“A positive attitude is also very important. Social media is full of edited photos of stars and models, but these images are often unreal.(积极的心态也非常重要。社交媒体上充斥着明星和模特们精心修饰过的照片,但这些照片往往并不真实)”以及下文“Instead, focus on your own strong points. Everyone has special features that make them unique.(相反,要专注于自己的长处。每个人都有独特的特质,这些特质使他们与众不同)”可知,本段围绕“积极态度”展开,前文指出社交媒体上明星和模特的照片往往不真实,后文强调“关注自身优点”。空格处需衔接“不真实照片”与“关注自身”,避免青少年产生盲目对比。A选项“避免将自己的身材与他们的进行比较”恰好承接前文的不真实图片,同时引出后文对自身优点的关注,符合段落逻辑。故选A。
根据下文“Instead of criticizing (批评) your body for not being “perfect”, celebrate its abilities — like dancing, climbing stairs easily, or getting better quickly from illness. Writing down things you appreciate about yourself will improve your long-term happiness and health.

The soft cookies seemed to ease his discomfort, and his face turned less pale. Gradually, the pain faded away. He took his hand off his stomach, sat straight and smiled at Lily.
After the boy felt better, they studied together. Lily focused on the tricky grammar rules, while the boy explained his notes clearly. That afternoon slid away unknowingly. Before leaving, Lily thanked him again. “Your help means a lot. You have no idea how worried I am about my exam,” she said. The boy smiled and replied, “It’s my pleasure. Let’s keep studying tomorrow.” Lily nodded happily. At this time, she was actually somewhat looking forward to the exam, not only because she became more confident, but because she got a friend who stood side by side with her.
