The Chinese New Year parade isn't the only place to watch a lion dance in. the San Francisco Bay Area. At weddings, grand openings of new businesses and other celebrations, the traditional Chinese art is performed year-round, thanks to the contributions of lion dance groups and young people increasingly embracing the activity.
Connie Lu, a senior at Lincoln High School in San Francisco, has been practicing lion dance for three years in a youth lion dance club. She performed as the lion's head at a high school competition during the weekend in San Francisco's Chinatown to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
“I officially started performing in my freshman year, but I had been a ’tail’ in a Chinese school for some years. I was only following the head’s steps,” Lu said. “I think being a head is more fun because you can play out the lion.”
Lu’s team — eleven girls and two boys — participated in the competition, along with four other teams of about 100 players. The event also attracted hundreds of tourists. Blinking big eyes and shaking the body, the yellow lion played by Lu and her teammates jumped up on a narrow bench to the beat of drums and gongs and picked up a hanging flower bouquet. The dancers’ skillful movements won a big round of applause from the audience.
Each performance has a unique meaning. Lu’s performance tells the story of a lion who tries to cross a river to get a flower for his friend, but he is afraid of the river at first. Finally, he conquers the challenge and gets the flower to his friend.
“The meaning is that everyone has struggles in life and it can be scary. But when we work together and work hard, we can achieve it,” said Sophia Lee, a teammate of Lu’s. “The practice of lion dancing serves as a way to celebrate our cultural heritage with audience abroad, giving them a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich Chinese traditions.”

A. It focuses on individual spirit. B. It's a chance to share Chinese culture.
C. It's hardly accepted abroad. D. It doesn't require a high level of skills.

Like many people, I’m always trying to balance tough work deadlines, cleaning the house, and the endless messages on my phone. Last month, I felt really tired all the time. When I went for a regular (常规的) health check, I found out my blood pressure was getting too high. The doctor suggested that I take a few days off to go on a vacation.
Modern life is often busy, which makes many people feel stressed (有压力的). Studies show that stress is a common problem around the world. The World Health Organization says it affects millions of people everywhere.
Planning a trip can be a good way to relax and feel better. Dr. Jane Smith, a psychologist from Cornell University, says, “You don’t need to travel far or stay away for long. What’s important is to step away from your routine (日常事务) and take a break. Visiting new places and trying new things can make you happy and excited.”
Dr. Smith and her team carried out a study involving over 400 participants (参与者) who took short vacations. They assessed the participants’ energy levels both before and after their trips through detailed questionnaires (调查表). The results showed that 94% of the participants reported feeling more energetic after their vacations. This suggests that taking time off, even for short periods, can greatly improve one’s focus and creativity upon returning to work.
“Taking a trip is important, no matter how busy life gets. It’s good for your mind and body,” Dr. Smith says.
8. What does the author want to show by telling his story?
A. People seldom see a doctor.
B. People get tired after a trip.
C. People hardly go on a vacation.
D. People suffer stress from their busy life.
9. What is important for a trip according to Dr. Smith?
A. Finding a quiet city.
B. Choosing a faraway place.
C. Staying away for a long time.
D. Stopping regular activities for a while.
10 What were participants asked to do during the study?
A. Answer questions.
B. Record their daily life.
C. Pick their travelling places.
D. Visit the hospital for checks regularly.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Modern Life Is Stressful
B. What You Should Do During a Trip
C. Mind and Body Can Be Freed by a Trip
D. How People Balance Life and Work

Many technology companies are joining the generative AI trend (生成式人工智能趋势) and showing off new features that say they will help us live better and work better.
Before using AI, I didn’t trust it. Since I am a reporter, truth and accuracy (准确) are pretty important to what I do. But what if I can use AI tools in a way that helps me do it better? Isn’t that what big technology companies are promising? So, I decided to give it a real try.
On the first day, I started it by brain dumping (倾倒) all the things I wanted to finish. This included work tasks related to story ideas and life tasks like doing laundry, and doing yoga.
I told AI tool — Gemini that I worked from 9 am to 6 pm. It had me do work tasks before 9 am, without any advice on when to finish certain tasks, only suggesting I should start the yoga and writing in the evening if that works better for me.
Another AI tool — ChatGPT, by contrast, gave me a useful schedule based on how to best use my creative energy. After dealing with a news story to start the day, it suggested a clear time block for my longer story in the early afternoon, since it’s a good period to focus deeply on research or writing without the fatigue that can come later in the day. It even recommended getting the laundry going before I write in my long story since it can run in the background.
With my ChatGPT-planned schedule in place every morning, I felt more organized and relaxed about the day. It became immediately clear that ChatGPT was to become my go-to for the rest of the week.
12. What was the author’s attitude towards AI before using it?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
13. Why did the author decide to try AI?
A. To show his advanced idea. B. To help big technology companies.
C. To give himself time for relaxation. D. To get his work improved.
14. What’s the advantage of ChatGPT over Gemini according to the author?
A. It is free. B. It works faster.
C. It can completely finish his tasks. D. It offers more detailed and useful advice.
15. What does the underlined word “fatigue” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Tiredness. B. Energy. C. Trouble. D. Success.

In the early afternoon, Jack, a 13-year-old boy who loves games, found himself at an important moment in a class race. The blue team, where Jack was, was set against the red team in a friendly competition. Jack was always driven by the desire (渴望) to win because, to him, joy only came from victory (胜利).
Before the race, he was very sure he would win. But then his new black shoes made him trip and fall. It was a moment when he felt bad and thought he might lose.
Suddenly, a voice broke through his sad feeling: “Come on! Let’s run together.” It was Alan, a boy from the red team, giving a helping hand. Jack looked up, surprised and a bit confused. “We’re not on the same team. Why do you want to help me?” he asked.
Alan said something simple but deep: “Winning isn’t everything. It’s just a race, and there are many races in life. I want to be kind to others.” These words hit Jack and made him think again about what’s really important.
Jack slowly got up. His knees (膝盖) still hurt from the fall. He looked at Alan, who was smiling at him. “Thank you,” Jack said quietly and thankfully. Alan just said, “We’re classmates. Let’s finish this race together.”

Smith says.

A. Tiredness. B. Energy. C. Trouble. D. Success.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. A

【答案】 Jack nodded, and the two of them started running side by side, much to the surprise of their classmates. As they ran, the other students on both teams watched in amazement. Some cheered them on, while others were still trying to understand what was happening. Jack and Alan didn’t seem to care about which team would win. They focused on the joy of running together. Jack's pain from the fall was still there, but he felt a new strength inside him. When they crossed the finish line, the whole class erupted into applause. Jack and Alan looked at each other, their faces beaming with a sense of accomplishment that went beyond winning or losing.
From that day on, Jack started to change from caring about winning to helping others more. He realized that the true value in life wasn't always about coming out on top. One day, he saw a classmate struggling with his schoolwork. Remembering Alan's kindness, Jack offered to help. He spent hours patiently explaining difficult concepts. As time went by, Jack became known as a helpful and kind-hearted boy. He no longer felt the need to always be the winner. Instead, he found joy in making a difference in others' lives, just like Alan had shown him that day in the race.
