This August, 15-year-old silky terrier Tobi — messy brown hair, long whiskers (胡须) — walked confidently with Andrea Cáceres in NYC. Calm with traffic noise or speeding ambulance sirens, he’s “a real New Yorker,” she laughed. But Tobi wasn’t always so comfortable in the big city; her new children’s book Hello, Tobi! nicely captures his first careful walks in NYC, a story deeply rooted in their tight bond.
Born in Venezuela, Tobi inspired Cáceres while she studied civil engineering. “I started drawing, and always drew him,” she said. Self-taught, she pursued illustration after graduation. In 2016, in Venezuela’s crisis, she moved to the U.S. as a textile designer, leaving Tobi behind. Loneliness and stress pushed her to find a creative outlet (发泄的途径).
In Jan.2018, she launched “A Dog A Day keeps Stress Away,” drawing one dog daily — Tobi first. The illustrations struck a chord — she began getting requests to draw people’s pets and paint wall pictures for local cafes and animal hospitals. After more than two years apart, she saved enough money to bring Tobi to NYC. His first flight canceled, he traveled through Caracas, Panama, and Miami before finally arriving, where Cáceres waited eagerly. “He started crying the moment he saw me; then I cried, and everyone around us did too,” she recalled, her eyes softening.
Hello, Tobi! shows his Harlem walks, meeting diverse families who greeted him. “I felt at home — everyone’s different, but that’s why you fit in,” Cáceres said. Now in Brooklyn, where many speak Tobi’s native Spanish, he greets all but loves her most. “He loves me no matter what,” she said, rubbing his belly as he wagged his tail (摇尾巴). The two happy New Yorkers headed home.
24. Why did Andrea Cáceres leave Tobi in Venezuela in 2016?
A. She couldn’t afford to take him to the U.S.
B. Tobi was not allowed to enter the U.S.
C. She moved to the U.S. due to Venezuela’s crisis.
D. She needed to focus on her textile design work.
25. What does the underlined phrase “struck a chord” mean in the sentence?
A. Hit the string. B. Faced new challenges.
C. Received strong criticism. D. Gained great popularity.
26. What did Andrea Cáceres do to deal with loneliness and stress in the U.S.?
A. She worked as a civil engineer.
B. She started a dog-drawing project.
C. She visited local cafes and animal hospitals.
D. She wrote a children’s book about Tobi.
27. What can we infer from the passage about Andrea Cáceres and Tobi?
A. Tobi didn’t adapt to life in NYC at all.
B. Their relationship is deep and precious.
C. Cáceres drew Tobi only when she missed him.
D. Tobi prefers to communicate in Spanish.

China’s agricultural heritage develops actively, combining long-standing farming methods with modern techniques to build successful ecosystems. A good example is “Suxin Lamei” wintersweet (腊梅) in Chongqing’s Jingguan Town, a local treasure grown by villagers for over 500 years. With efforts from farmers like Deng Jihui, its cultivation area has expanded to 13 square kilometers, bringing locals annual incomes of 10,000 to 300,000 yuan and strongly boosting the town’s tourism — clearly showing how “living heritages” adapt and grow.
So far, China has recognized 188 important agricultural heritage systems, covering mulberry-sericulture (桑蚕养殖), tea culture, dryland farming and rice growing. Their biggest strength is a long, unbroken history: Sichuan’s Mengding Mountain has had tea cultivation since the Han Dynasty, while Jiangxi’s Wannian County boasts prehistoric rice fields. These practices always adapt to local conditions, like Inner Mongolia’s Aohan Banner. There, 8,000 years of dryland farming relies on natural rainfall, and farmers keep hand-seeding traditions alongside machines, deeply shaping the local culture.
These heritages are more than just farming — they form complete living ecosystems. Zhejiang’s Qingtian Rice-Fish System, listed as a UN global heritage in 2005, has maintained a balanced rice-fish relationship for 1,300 years. Modern upgrades, such as digital monitoring and heritage museums, make it a hit. It now draws about 470,000 visitors yearly, earning around 15 million yuan in tourism. Similarly, Deng’s wintersweet group has shifted from offline sales to online platforms and created products like flower tea.
Deng dedicated to reviving this precious heritage for rural growth, sees more creative young farmers joining the cause. China’s agricultural legacy, a strong link between tradition and progress, continues to thrive and boost rural prosperity nationwide.
28. What can we learn about “Suxin Lamei” wintersweet from the passage?
A. It is a local treasure with a history of less than 500 years.
B. It is the only agricultural heritage in Chongqing’s Jingguan Town.
C. It contributes to both locals’ income and Jingguan Town’s tourism.
D. Its cultivation area is 13 square kilometers due to Deng Jihui’s solo efforts.
29. Which of the following is a feature of China’s recognized agricultural heritage systems?
A. They mainly focus on rice growing and tea culture.
B. Most of them have a long but interrupted development history.
C. They are always adjusted to fit local environments.
D. They replace traditional farming methods with modern techniques.
30. What can be inferred from the third paragraph?
A. The Qingtian Rice-Fish System was the first Chinese agricultural heritage.
B. Modern technologies have made the Qingtian Rice-Fish System popular.
C. The Qingtian Rice-Fish System earns 15 million yuan mainly from rice and fish sales.
D. Deng’s wintersweet group has stopped offline sales completely.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of China’s agricultural heritage?
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.

NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars by the 2030s, but besides the need for large amounts of supplies, the 21-month trip brings big health problems, such as radiation danger and muscle loss. Hibernation (冬眠), once thought an unrealistic solution, is now getting more attention, and a new study on bats is making this science fiction-inspired idea more possible.
Many mammals go into hibernation in winter, lowering their body temperature and slowing down how their bodies use energy to save strength. But humans can't do this safely. Our bodies can't store enough fat without harm, work well at low energy levels, or live through big drops in body temperature. To find the secret of hibernation, German animal scientist Gerald Kerth and his team studied red blood cells from three groups: hibernating noctule bats (绒山蝠), non-hibernating Egyptian fruit bats and humans.
They tested the cells at three temperatures— human body temperature, room temperature, and the cold point where noctule bats start to hibernate. When it got colder, both bat and human cells became thicker and harder. But only bat cells grew much thicker compared to how hard they were. Researchers think this feature helps bats take in and spread oxygen better in cold conditions— even Egyptian fruit bats have kept this ability from their hibernating ancestors, though they don't hibernate now.
Making human cells change like this could open the door to safe hibernation during space travel. Experts say the study is an important step, but many questions still exist— like how to make humans hibernate and if medicine can change our blood cells. While space travel still has many difficulties, this bat research gives an exciting breakthrough to make long Mars trips healthier and more achievable.
32. Which of the following is NOT the reason for humans' inability to go into hibernation safely?
A. Because our bodies cannot work well at low energy levels.
B. Because our bodies fail to store enough fat without harm.
C. Because our bodies can't survive big drops in body temperature.
D. Because our bodies can hardly use energy to save strength.
33. What can we infer about Egyptian fruit bats from the study?
A They can hibernate safely like noctule bats.
B. Their red blood cells have lost the ancestral hibernation traits.
C. Their red blood cells can still adapt to cold conditions well.
D. They store more fat than other non- hibernating mammals.
34. What does the passage imply about the future of Mars travel?
A. Hibernation will solve all problems of Mars travel.
B. The bat study has made safe hibernation in space a reality.
C. Long Mars trips may become healthier with further research.
D. NASA will send astronauts to Mars without any difficulties by the 2030s.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. NASA Is Planning to Send Astronauts to Mars for Hibernation
B. New Bat Discovery May Aid Human Hibernation for Space Travel
C. Hibernation Has Become a Reality Thanks to a New Study on Bats
D. Studying Hibernation Is of Great Importance to the Human Race

The World’s Plastic Pollution Crisis
Plastic pollution has become a critical global environmental problem, driven by the huge increase in disposable (一次性的) plastic production. ___36___ It affects developing Asian and African nations with poor garbage collection, as well as developed countries with low recycling rates, urging a UN-led global agreement effort.
Invented in 1907 by Leo Baekeland, plastics changed fields like medicine and transportation with their light, durable (耐用的) properties. ___37___ But their convenience developed a “throw-away” habit — 40% of annual plastic production is single-use. Items like bags and wrappers are used for minutes but persist for centuries, leading to bans such as California’s 2026 plastic bag prohibition.
___38___ Most ocean plastic comes from land, carried by rivers to the sea and spread globally by currents. Sunlight and waves break plastic into microplastics (less than 0.2 inches wide). These so-called microplastics are spread throughout the water column and have been found in every corner of the globe, from Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench. ___39___ Moreover, millions of animals die yearly from plastic pollution, with over 2,100 species (including endangered ones) harmed by entanglement (缠住) or starvation. ___40___ Microplastics in seafood cause organ and reproductive problems. Cleaning up microplastics is nearly impossible, so experts stress prevention: better waste management, recycling, and reducing single-use plastic production.
A. Plastic pollution doesn’t stay limited to one area.
B. Worse still, these particles (颗粒) have even been found in drinking water.
C. It’s hard to imagine modern life without this useful material.
D. Microplastics have also entered the food chain we depend on.
E. This problem is not limited to any specific group of countries.
F. Plastic waste even affects remote islands far from human settlements.
G. They brought great convenience to people’s daily lives at first.

A Christmas Surprise
I’ll never forget a special Christmas that changed how I see the world. It wasn’t about expensive gifts or big surprises, but it showed me the true meaning of kindness. When I was 8, my family left our home in Texas to move to California. Life had been hard in Texas— my mom worked hard but couldn’t earn enough money to support us. So she found a new job in Oakland, California, and we decided to start over there.
Leaving Texas was sad. I had to say goodbye to my best friends in the middle of the school year. I was also worried about California: I’d heard stories about earthquakes and fires, and we didn’t know anyone there. Our new home was a small apartment in the city, and the neighborhood was very different from our old one. The school was tough, and there weren’t many kids to play with. But my brother, sister, and I stuck together. On weekends, we took the bus to the beach and looked at the big ocean—we’d never seen anything like it before.
But moving cost a lot of money. By the time Christmas came, we had almost no money left. We couldn’t buy a Christmas tree, presents, or even a nice dinner. The weather in California was warm, so it didn’t feel like Christmas at all. My mom tried her best to make it special. We made paper decorations, sang Christmas songs, and drew pictures for each other as gifts. She also saved a little money to make a simple meal of noodles and bread.
On Christmas Eve, we were sitting at the table talking about our old Christmas when someone knocked on the door. We opened it and were surprised—there stood two people from the local TV news. We watched their show every night! They said my mom had written to them after seeing a story about their toy donation for poor kids. Her letter arrived late, but they still wanted to bring us gifts.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“We’re here with Santa’s gifts,” the woman said with a smile.

Unfortunately, the anxious mother elephant made matters worse by pushing more mud into the well, and it almost covered the baby. The life of the little elephant was in great danger. Thankfully, people living nearby heard the sad cries of the mother elephant. They immediately rushed over to see what had happened. The villagers found the mother elephant, but she refused to leave her baby. The villagers had to stand far away to watch everything. Then the kind-hearted villagers tried their best to remove some of the soil around the baby by using bananas. At last, the mother tightly wrapped her trunk around the baby’s body and pulled him out. Then the tired mother and her baby happily walked side by side as they continued their journey.

【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. B

Deng, dedicated to reviving this precious heritage for rural growth, sees more creative young farmers joining the cause.

A. They can hibernate safely like noctule bats.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. C 35. B

【答案】36. E 37. G 38. A 39. B 40. D

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文
“We’re here with Santa’s gifts, ”the woman said with a smile. With their eyes filled with warmth, they handed out the presents gently:my brother got a shiny pinball game he’d talked about, my sister a soft teddy bear, and me a small football. They also gave my mom a bottle of nice-smelling perfume. “You’re not alone here—this city’s your home now, ”the man said softly. “Merry Christmas to your sweet family!”My mom covered her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes, while my brother and sister jumped up and down with excitement. I just stood there, feeling a warmth in my chest that had nothing to do with the California weather.
As they left, I held my football tightly in my hands. It wasn’t fancy or expensive, but it felt like the best gift ever, filled with warmth I’d never felt before. That Christmas taught me that happiness isn’t about money or fancy things. It’s about family getting together, unexpected kindness from strangers, and knowing someone cares about you deeply. In a new and strange place, those two strangers made us feel loved and welcome. I’ll never forget that Christmas or their kind hearts. Every time I think of that night, I’m reminded to pass on that warmth to others, because you never know how much your small act of goodness might change someone’s world, just like those news reporters changed ours.
