We were on an overnight trip, just a single night, and what he’d brought for dinner was this: Rice. Literally nothing else. This was not a result of him trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. He wasn’t. I tried to convince him to at least put soy sauce (酱油) on it. But no, Jared wasn’t having a bar of it. “I don’t need it,” he said flatly. Now, if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I’d almost get it. When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! I know what you’re thinking; it’s simply that, as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Absolutely. But there’s more to it than that. Last month, I went down the coast car camping with my family. One morning, my wife made a statement. “I don’t see the point,” she said. “It’s so much work, camping. But the views at home are better. The beds are more comfortable. It’s more peaceful. And at home, the food is better.” I’ll admit she’s right about the first three. But the food? We had a simple pasta one night, snags another, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted good. Better than at home. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping. The real point I want to get to is that meals largely taste so good when I’m camping because I’m reminded of some things easily forgotten at home, where I can simply go to the cupboard, or the supermarket, and get whatever takes my fancy. Life, when you’re camping, is reduced to its essentials, and I am reminded of how lucky most of us are to be dry and warm and fed. More importantly, I am reminded that sadly, and in fact unforgivably, not all of us are. And I am reminded that we, as a society, should do better for them. 1. Why did Jared bring only rice for dinner on the trip? A. He didn’t like soy sauce. B. He preferred to travel light. C. He couldn’t afford a better meal. D. He enjoyed simple outdoor meals. 2. What does the underlined word “ravenous” in the third paragraph mean? A. Tired. B. Starving. C. Fulfilled. D. Refreshed. 3. What does the author think of camping? A. It is a test of adaptability. B. It is a chance to enjoy good food. C. It is a reminder of the good life he has. D. It is a bonding experience for his family. 4 What makes the author sad according to the last paragraph? A. Some people lack the basic necessities of life. B. Some people fail to appreciate what they have. C. People easily forget the beauty of simple things. D. People easily quit camping due to its discomfort. B Everywhere I look, there are new buildings under construction. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living. However, how can our children understand and maintain their cultural identity if we erase so much of the physical evidence of it? The arguments for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional attachment to the past. There are also good economic arguments in favour of preservation. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local residents, eager to learn about their city's past. Some have argued that historic preservation is too expensive, but many recent projects have demonstrated that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation of an existing structure for adaptive reuse can cost about £40 per square metre less than even the most basic new construction, while preserving the beauty of the original building. And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren’t very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New construction almost always has a more serious environmental impact (影响) because it requires the use of all-new materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too. Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered. 5. What drives people to replace old buildings with new ones? A. Their dislike of old buildings. B. Their pride in cultural identity. C. Their concern about young generations. D. Their desire for modern comforts. 6. What does the example of Al Bastikiya show? A. Historic renovation costs much money. B. Local governments support small businesses. C. Historic preservation brings economic benefits. D. International tourism promises economic recovery. 7. What can be inferred about renovating old buildings from paragraph 3? A. It uses green materials. B. It damages architectural beauty. C. It reduces enviromental impact. D. It worries environmental experts. 8. What is the author’s attitude towards historic preservation? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective. C At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully (优雅地). However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking hopelessly to keep up. Experts from Stanford’s Health Services explored this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common wrong idea: true talents achieve success effortlessly, while those working hard are less capable. In an effort to challenge this misconception (误解), researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily recognized colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to recognize. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning. The study shows that as tasks require more effort more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the continuous application of effort. Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will disappear over time. This pushes us to reconsider the culture behind that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a change would not only reduce the pressures related to the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a big effect on personal development and the future of education. 9. What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe? A. Choosing effort over well-being. B. Relieving stress through social activities. C. Showing graceful images to attract others. D. Hiding hard work to appear naturally gifted. 10. How does the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge misconception? A. By proving focus improves brain function. B. By linking color recognition to intelligence. C. By showing effort fuels the brain activity. D. By connecting careful observation with talent. 11. What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”? A. It causes stress and false ideas about success. B. It values the learning process over outcomes. C. It prevents students from recognizing their talents. D. It makes students value socializing more than studying. 12 Which of the following might the author agree with? A. Fortune prefers those with a clear mind. B. Sweat is the ink that writes a masterpiece. C. Work in silence and let success make the noise. D. Keep moving forward even when no one sees it. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ugh! You remembered you had your keys a second ago, and now they’re just gone! I still remember a trip to the circus that left a lasting impression on me. In front of us in line was a family with eight children, all under twelve. They didn’t seem wealthy. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved. They stood together, excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they were about to see. It was clear that they had never been to the circus before, and this experience promised to be a highlight of their young lives. When the ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted, he proudly replied, “Eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets, please.” However, when she quoted the price, his lips began to shake. He leaned closer and asked for the price again, realizing he didn’t have enough money. My heart ached for those children, knowing how disappointed they would be. Actually, we weren’t wealthy, either. So I understood their feelings well, and I felt sorry for them. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为80左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Then I saw my dad pull out a $20 bill and drop it on the ground. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 青岛二中2025-2026学年第一学期12月份阶段练习一高一 英语试题 试卷满分120分,考试时间90分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题:每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话读两遍。 1.
