After the 2023 wildfires, Maui is welcoming visitors back. Tourism is the island’s most important source of money, and every dollar spent here — from eating at family-run restaurants to booking underwater swimming tours with local beach sellers — supports its long-term recovery. Your visit becomes a direct investment in Maui’s future and helps keep thousands of locals employed.
The island offers special experiences. You can climb up Haleakalā, a sleeping volcano where visitors often wake before dawn to see amazing sunrises above the thin clouds. Another choice is the famous 52-mile Hana Highway, which provides wonderful views of thick forests and waterfalls, though the drive can be difficult with its sharp turns. For a more relaxing day, Maui’s coastline has beautiful clean beaches like the three-mile area of white sand at Kāʻanapali.
While Maui has nice weather all year, the best times to visit are during the less crowded seasons. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-November) offer fewer people, better prices, and equally good weather. This is different from the busy summer and the winter whale-watching season (December-May), which also brings many visitors.

At the airport, a security (安全) problem left my wife Cherié and me in a huge line, waiting to fly home to Cincinnati. Just as we accepted the wait, I worried a lot: I’d left our new camera, which cost $1, 500, in the rental car. I rushed to call the taxi company, and to my relief, they said the driver was coming to return the camera. When meeting me, he even turned down the reward I offered. When I got the camera and returned to the line to wait, the crowd had grown even bigger. I was sure I’d miss our flight.
Then a security officer walked over, smiling. “People like you have a special entrance — no need to wait in line,” he said, gesturing for me to follow. He explained this special channel (通道) was set up to keep crowds orderly, and then he talked excitedly about my “movies” — Solo: A Star Wars Story, Champions and Now You See Me. That’s when I realized: he thought I was Woody Harrelson, an actor I’m always mistaken for. When he asked about the Champions cast, I laughed and said I hadn’t seen them in forever.
As we reached a private security room, fear hit — I didn’t want trouble from the mix-up. I tried to show my ID, but he waved it off. “People like you use false names, right?” he said. I quickly said the first name that came to mind: “Karl Haffner”. Later I realized Karl and Woody share strange similarities — the same hometown, height, even eating only plants. Before I knew it, I was through security and waiting at the gate with the camera.
Cherié looked at me with wide eyes, saying, “How did you cut the line?” I smiled broadly, holding up the camera. “Call me Woody—I got through the airport’s special channel for public figures,” I said. She rolled her eyes but laughed when I told her the story. To this day, I still feel special, for the happy mistake that reminded me: life’s best moments aren’t planned. A little mix-up and lots of laughter are all you need to make a trip unforgettable.
4. Why did the author phone the taxi company?
A. To get the lost camera. B. To book another taxi ride.
C. To return the rental camera. D. To express thanks for the service.
5. What happened to the author when he was waiting in line again?
A. He kept the crowds orderly. B. He met Woody Harrelson.
C. He was mistaken for an actor. D. He talked about his movies.
6. How did Cherié feel when seeing her husband according to paragraph 4?
A. Annoyed. B. Frightened. C. Anxious. D. Curious.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Going with the Flow B. Believing in Strangers
C. Enjoying a Happy Mistake D. Buying a Ticket to Life

A 14-year study of over 90, 000 adults presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress has revealed that “catch-up sleep” on weekends can reduce heart disease risk by up to 20%.
The research, led by cardiovascular (心血管的) scientists from China’s Fuwai Hospital, tracked participants through the UK Biobank and found that those who got the most compensate (补偿的) weekend sleep were 19% less likely to develop heart disease compared to those who maintained consistent but insufficient sleep schedules.
The protective effect was most dramatic for the 20% of participants classified as sleep-deprived— those getting fewer than seven hours nightly during weekdays.
A separate NHANES study of 3, 400 Americans confirmed these findings, showing that weekend catch-up sleep duration of more than 2 hours was strongly associated with reduced cardiovascular disease prevalence when weekday sleep fell below six hours. But here’s what makes this discovery revolutionary: it directly challenges decades of sleep medicine orthodoxy (正统观念).
While experts have long emphasized maintaining regular sleep to maintain circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) this research suggests that for individuals suffering from long-term lack of sleep, sleeping in on weekends may be more protective than maintaining a regular but insufficient sleep pattern.
The study found specific reductions in stroke (中风) and coronary heart disease among weekend sleepers. Dr. Jim Liu from Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center explains the mechanism: “Insufficient sleep can increase the risk of developing hypertension obesity, arrhythmias, and coronary artery disease. On the other hand, making up for lost sleep can reduce such risks.”
The American Heart Association now considers sleep one of the core components of heart health, ranking it alongside diet, exercise, and smoking cessation.
With one in three American adults reporting insufficient daily sleep, this research suggests that weekend recovery sleep might serve as a crucial cardiac safety net for millions of people who are always tired.
8. Which group can benefit most from weekend catch-up sleep?
A. People who sleep 8 hours every night. B. People who sleep less than 7 hours on weekdays.
C. People who maintain a regular sleep schedule. D. People who often feel sleepy on weekdays.
9. What does the underlined word “prevalence” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Occurrence. B. Treatment. C. Prevention. D. Cure.
10. What is Jim Liu’s attitude towards the research results?
A. Favourable. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Unconcerned.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Americans need to sleep more on weekends.
B. Long-term lack of sleep causes many diseases.
C. Sleep medicine experts should change their advice.
D. Weekend catch-up sleep can reduce heart disease risk.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。两项研究证实,周末补觉可降低心脏病等心血管疾病风险,对工作日睡眠不足者保护作用显著,为睡眠不足人群提供心脏健康保障。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The protective effect was most dramatic for the 20% of participants classified as sleep-deprived—those getting fewer than seven hours nightly during weekdays. (这种保护作用在20%被归类为睡眠不足的参与者中最为显著 —— 这些人工作日每晚睡眠不足7小时。)”可知,工作日睡眠不足7小时的人从周末补觉中获益最多。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“A separate NHANES study of 3,400 Americans confirmed these findings, showing that weekend catch-up sleep duration of more than 2 hours was strongly associated with reduced cardiovascular disease prevalence when weekday sleep fell below six hours. (另一项针对3400名美国人的NHANES研究证实了这些发现,表明当工作日睡眠不足6小时时,周末补觉超过2小时与心血管疾病患病prevalence的降低密切相关。)” 可知,“周末补觉超过2小时”与“reduced cardiovascular disease prevalence”存在“密切相关”的关系,结合前文“降低疾病风险”的核心观点,可推断“reduced prevalence”对应“疾病发生概率降低”。故选A项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Dr. Jim Liu from Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center explains the mechanism: “Insufficient sleep can increase the risk of developing hypertension, obesity, arrhythmias, and coronary artery disease. On the other hand, making up for lost sleep can reduce such risks.”(俄亥俄州立大学韦克斯纳医学中心的吉姆・刘博士解释了这一机制:“睡眠不足会增加患高血压、肥胖症、心律失常和冠心病的风险。另一方面,补觉可以降低这些风险。”)”可知,吉姆・刘博士通过解释补觉降低患病风险的机制,支持该研究结果,态度是赞同的。故选A项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A 14-year study of over 90,000 adults presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress has revealed that “catch-up sleep” on weekends can reduce heart disease risk by up to 20%.(一项为期14年、涉及9万多名成年人的研究在欧洲心脏病学会大会上公布,周末“补觉”可以将心脏病风险降低高达20%。)”及全文围绕该研究展开的验证、机制解释可知,文章核心是“周末补觉能降低心脏病风险”。故选D项。

根据上文“Normally, everyone else is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. Keeping it in mind that you cannot change others, no matter how hard you try. (通常,每个人都有权拥有自己的信仰和观点。请记住,无论你多么努力,你都无法改变别人)”以及下文“Even if you try changing others, you will only be hurting yourself in the process. The best way would be to change yourself. 【15题详解】
根据空后的“If not controlled, this can have severe consequences in your relationship. You need to mind whatever you say and do. (如果不加以控制,这会在你的人际关系中产生严重后果。你需要注意你所说的和所做的一切)”可知,此空应提及情绪化时言行可能出现的问题。G选项“Oftentimes, we say a lot when we are emotional, especially when angry(通常,我们在情绪化时会说很多话,尤其是在生气的时候)”中的“say a lot when we are emotional”指出了情绪化时的具体表现,“especially when angry”进一步强调了这种情况,与下文“ If not controlled”形成逻辑衔接,符合语境。故选G项。
【16题详解】
根据空前的“Let’s say that you get into a fight with your friends, and you also get hurt. (假设你和你的朋友吵架了,你也受伤了)”以及空后的“This is what I mean, focus on yourself in a situation like this and you will grow as a person and will also become emotionally mature. (这就是我的意思,在这种情况下专注于自己,你将作为一个人成长,也将变得情感成熟)”可知,此空应说明在与朋友吵架受伤时应有的正确做法,避免不良后果。E选项“You should never allow your hurt feelings to start an argument(你永远不应该让你受伤的感觉引发争吵)”中的“never allow your hurt feelings to start an argument”给出了具体的行为建议,与下文“focus on yourself”相呼应,符合语境。故选E项。

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, the attitudes to dirt are always changing.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, and washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. The king of England did something similar in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. France’s Henry IV was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief above was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbour ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家) , encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

Buying a Ticket to Life
C
While experts have long emphasized maintaining regular sleep to maintain circadian rhythms (昼夜节律), this research suggests that for individuals suffering from long-term lack of sleep, sleeping in on weekends may be more protective than maintaining a regular but insufficient sleep pattern.
The study found specific reductions in stroke (中风) and coronary heart disease among weekend sleepers. Dr. Jim Liu from Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center explains the mechanism: “Insufficient sleep can increase the risk of developing hypertension, obesity, arrhythmias, and coronary artery disease.
