Now glasses have become a daily necessity (必需品) for some of us. So what do you know about them?
Nobody knows who made the first wearable eyeglasses, but experts say they appeared in Italy. Early eyeglasses were like magnifying glasses (放大镜). And most of them weren’t even made of glass! Instead, many early eyeglasses were made of quartz (石英). That’s because most glass at that time wasn’t clear, so it wouldn’t have worked well for eye-glasses.
Eyeglasses didn’t look much like modern glasses until the 1700’s. That’s when people added car stems (镜) to hold the glasses on their faces. Glasses also became much more common around this time, probably because reading and writing became more popular.
People didn’t start seeing eye doctors for glasses until the 1800s. In those days, people simply tried on different pairs of glasses until they found one that made them see better. Eye doctors changed all that. They gave people an eye test to see whether they needed a pair of glasses or not.
One big change was bifocal (双光眼镜) in 1784. This made glasses help people see things that are both far away and very near. Different kinds of glasses have also appeared. Sunglasses are about as old as eyeglasses. People in China started wearing sunglasses in the 12th century. These early sunglasses were also made of quartz. Nowadays, many people also like to wear contact lenses (隐形眼镜), which were invented by a German in 1887. The first contact lenses were very uncomfortable to wear. However, today’s lenses are soft er and can be worn all day. However, you should always take your contact lenses out at night. Some people even like to wear glasses without lenses. These are called fashion glasses, and they come in many shapes and sizes to match everyone’s personal style.

“Imagine that your home is on fire. You’re allowed to save one thing. Your family and pets are safe, so don’t worry about them. What is the most important thing you have? It can be any size.”
Linda Sue wrote a book, The One Thing You’d Save. In it, a teacher named Ms. Chang invites her students to think of the question above. She wants to challenge her students to name the most important thing to them. Some students know the answer right away. Others come to their answers more slowly. And some students change their minds when they hear their classmates’ answers. As for the answers, some choose baseball cards or toy animals. One picks a sweater that has been passed down for generations (代). Another chooses a box of memories about…
Even Ms. Chang shares her own choice in the end. It is a really thought-provoking (引人深思的) question. As the students are trying to answer it, they discover more about one another and themselves.
The book is a collection of poems. The writer tells the story through narrative (叙述的) poems. What makes the book popular is that it makes people think deeply.
The book uses black-and-white pictures to show the objects the students choose. When seeing the pictures, people may think of scenes (场景) of their homes, the classrooms and more.
The pictures offer wordless moments that encourage readers to think more before they move on.
