The librarians at Baton Rouge's public libraries have always taken pride in answering
every question, from recipes to football events. But after the catastrophic 2016 floods, the
questions changed. People urgently needed to know how to conta et FEMA, get help with
bills, or find a homeless shelter. These needs went far beyond books people required time,
guidance, and practical help.
Recognizing this, the libraries partnered with Volunteers of America Greater Baton
Rouge (VOA GBR) , a nonprofit. In 2017, they launched a 90-day pilot program, stationing
VOA GBR caseworkers in three library branches three nights a week.
Melissa Peeler, a worker of VOA GBR, initially wondered if anyone would e pproach her.
That evening, only a homeless man seemed to notice her. When he finally asked what she was
doing, she explained she was there to offer social service help.“I just need a place to sleep,
he said Melissa provided a list of shelters and pointed out VOA GBR's nearby drop in center
which offered showers, computers, and even could assist with obtaining identity documents.
“Really? I n ever knew that. Thanks! Im glad you're here, " he replied.
Word spread. Soon, people came to Melissa with complex needs finding jobs, securing
donated school supplies questions traditional librarians couldn't answer.“Before I talked to
you, I didn't know what to do, " one woman thanked her.
The program's impact became undeniable. One day, a man made a beeline for Melissa
proudly showing a VO AGB R ID from the drop-in center.“I d on't know what I would have
done without you guys!" he said.
The pilot program was renewed for a full year. In just six months, VOA GBR assisted
248 people in the libraries they might not have reached otherwise, expanding services to
include programs like monthly free legal advice. People now depend on this presence.
Baton Rouge's libraries hold books full of wisdom, but what the libraries and VOA G BE
offer is a different kind of guidance one of immediate compassion and community support,
truly bringing the spirit of service to life.

In an era when screens dominate our daily lives, digital eye strain has emerged as a
significant public health issue affecting millions worldwide.Digital eye strain, which is
characterized by a range of ocular (and visual symptoms such as dryness, watering,
itching, burning, and even double vision, extends beyond mere discomfort to signal the
potential presence of chronic issues that can significantly affect an individual's quality of life
and productivity.
When we are focusing on digital displays, our blink (rate falls, and our eyes strain
to maintain focus on near objects for extended periods.Reduced blinking and sustained near
focus can give rise to ocular issues. These symptoms are often short-lived,but if left
untreated, they can become ongoing and very difficult to deal with.
The 20-20-20 rule is a simple but effective strategy for protecting your eyes against digital
strain.Every 20 minutes,take20-sccond break to focus on something 20 feet away.This
brief break allows your eye muscles to relax, reducing the strain associated with constant
near focus work.Environmental factors also play a fundamental role in maintaining ocular
comfort during screen use.Proper lighting, adequate humidity, and good air quality can
significantly affect eye health.
For those experiencing persistent symptoms, professional help is key.Eye care
practitioners can provide comprehensive exams to identify underlying issues such as refractive
errors where the eye's shape prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina, causing
blurry vision,or dry eye disease.
Emerging therapies, which are being developed to tackle the growing problem of screen
induced eye damage.offer new hope for the more effective management of digital eye strain
Among these,novel TRPM8 agonists(激动剂)acting like precise keys-一show great
potential in relieving dry-eye discomfort by gently unlocking the cooing receptors on the eye's
surface.
In this digital age,it's important to take measures to protect our vision.By recognizing
the signs of digital eye strain, implementing protective strategies, and seeking timely
professional care,we can reduce the risks associated with our screen-dependent lifestyles.
32.What can be implied from paragraph 17
A.Using a computer leads to eye disorders.
B.Ocular symptoms have affected most people.
C.Eye health determines people's productivity.
D.We should emphasize the risks of digital eye strain.
33.Which factor is related to digital eye strain?
A.Blinking for a long time.
B.Looking at many obiects.
C.A decrease in blinking.
D.The change of near focus

B.Relative treatment methods
