And the good news is there are even several close to our headquarters in your hotel. If you're looking for a light lunch, try the cafe across the street. You've got to get there early though, because IT closes at three pm. There's an excEllent carribean curry house right next to our building too. If you really want to get out and about, you should grab a taxi or take the metro and head downtown to visit the city's famous botanical garden, art galleries and museums. Make sure to visit old montreal, which is not only the oldest part of the city, but one of the oldest urban areas in north america. Once there, walking is by far the best and easiest way to get around with the areas cover stones, streets and historic buildings. You can almost imagine that you're in europe. A old montreal's most famous building is no trade by silica, a major tourist stop. It's a breathtaking church built some time in the eighteen hundreds. Next to IT is a school for religious study that was built in sixteen eighty seven. I always remember that date because it's one of the oldest buildings in the city. Actually, it's one of the oldest buildings in the country. And if history isn't your thing, there are plenty of places to go for dinner or a quiet drink. I'd suggest going to rue saint Dennis for that. Anyway, enjoy yourself. There are marvelous restaurants for sure, all over montreal. Which of the following has the longest history? Listen to the next question. During the seven years that i've been working with the aircraft parts marketing team, i've accumulated know how with each new project assignment. I think it's fair to say that I contribute a lot more value today than I did about seven years ago. One reason is that with each technical project, I bring more technical know how than I did before. I make a conscious effort to learn from past mistakes and successes and to make sure that each new project benefits from the lessons that I have learned in the previous ones. Another factor is leadership, the ability to lead troubled projects to success. When our brazilian passenger aircraft project was in trouble last year, I stepped in. When distribution service projects in germany and canada nearly fell through this year, I stepped in. I think you're familiar with my nickname, the fireman. I'm the go to guy who gets called in to put out fires and get troubled projects going again. I'm eager to continue in this role, and I think you'll agree that i'm contributing more value now than when I was a newcomer. I could go on, but I think you get the picture business today is about creating value at all levels, and i'm all about value. Clients can tell the difference between the treatment they get from a company that value them and one that doesn't. It's easy to see the difference in the results, but it's not so easy to be the one who produces those results. That's where I come in. So that's my pitch. I think you agree that i'm due for a race. Thank you. During the seven years that i've been working with the aircraft parts marketing team, i've accumulated know how with each new project assignment. But now I don't know how to explain the feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for IT. IT all fits together. It's not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds rolling by. That's different. Then you will have to include that. In your point, the peacefulness ss of cross country scheme is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Predicting Powerful Waves
The earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30 may have been one of 21 (strong) ever recorded, with a magnitude of 8.8. But thanks to advances in science and technology, governments had enough time to warn and evacuate people 22 the tsunami arrived.
To understand how coastal communities are protected, you first need to know how tsunamis are formed. They are caused when the sea floor moves after an earthquake, landslide or volcanic eruption. This movement releases energy, which pushes a wave through the deep sea. Different from normal ocean waves caused by wind and storms, tsunami waves move through the whole depth of the water, not just the surface.
The first early warning system for the Pacific Ocean 23 (set) up in 1948. Since then, warning accuracy and speed have improved greatly. One key step was in 1963, 24 a worldwide network of seismometers(测震仪)was built. This made it easier to find the location and strength of an earthquake.
In 1978, this system was upgraded to a digital broadband global network of seismometers, which could give more detailed information more quickly. Scientists could now estimate the earthquake's size, where the ground split, and 25 it moved in three dimensions.
Today, 46 countries share data through the Pacific Ocean warning system. 26 uses both physical and statistical models to predict tsunami height. Satellites can now measure wave height directly from space 27 (use) radar. Forecast methods have also improved. Scientists have even started using AI programs to make predictions faster and more accurate.
The US Geological Survey pioneered the rapid sharing of earthquake data with the public. Initial estimates can now be given 28 minutes after an earthquake, and these are updated over the next few hours as more data are collected.
However, tsunami height predictions are never precise — the height can be higher or lower than 29 (expect) in different places. Early warning systems also depend on fast communication with the public. This includes mobile phone alerts, coordination between countries, clear safety advice, evacuation plans and regular tests of the alarm system. As a tsunami gets near the shore, it slows down to about the speed of a car, but it is still impossible to outrun it. Therefore, the best choice is 30 (act) quickly and calmly at the very moment.

The Link Between Movement and Health
How people exercise changes with each new trend, but the idea that physical activity is key to good health is more than a passing fashion. What won’t change is that staying active benefits health in various ways —including lowering the risk for heart attacks, and 31 mental health.
Loss of activity in our lives
It wasn’t always so difficult to keep 32 . People did it because they had to.
As cars multiplied and electric appliances reduced the amount of 33 labor people had to do, “we got to a point where we weren’t so physically active,” said Dr. Bethany Barone Gibbs, a professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown. “It then became 34 that maybe people who were more active were healthier.”
Recommended exercise
Studies showed even moderate-intensity activities could make a difference, leading to a 1995 U.S. surgeon general’s report 35 people to engage in 30 to 45 minutes of moderate activity each day, and for those who were already doing so, to push themselves harder.
In 2007, the American College of Sports Medicine, along with the American Medical Association and the U.S. surgeon general, launched a(n) 36 , calling for people to engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week.
Current federal guidelines now reflect additional evidence suggesting people 37 for up to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise.
All movement counts
Even small amounts of activity throughout the day can make a difference. More evidence suggests it’s not just how much people move but how much they sit that matters. The guidelines now 38 long periods of sitting behavior, finding a benefit with even five minutes of movement at least once an hour.
“Get off the couch” and move
“There is a(n) 39 that you need to be a sportsperson to get health benefits from exercise,” said Dr.Damon Swift, an exercise physiologist (生理学家) at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. “But really the benefits increase much earlier than that. Once you start getting off the couch, there is a large 40 in risk as you go from being inactive to somewhat active.”

The world’s top insect experts say our planet’s important insect population is going through a “death by a thousand cuts”. A new group of studies suggests Earth is losing around 1 to 2 percent of its insects each year. The losses are 41 climate change, pollution, agriculture, land use changes and chemicals. David Wagner of the University of Connecticut is the lead writer of the 12 studies, which recently appeared in Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.
The problem is a complex issue and even scientists say they do not fully understand it. The 42 of the issue makes it hard to get the public interested in possible solutions. Wagner said scientists need to find out if the levels of insect 43 are bigger in comparison to other species.
May Berenbaum of the University of Illinois, who helped lead the research 44 the insect losses to climate change 30 years ago. She said back then, the methods used to measure the degree and rate of climate change effects were 45 .Berenbaum says another issue is that many people simply 46 insects. She added that this is true even though the small creatures do a lot of good.
Wagner said two famous insects, honeybees and Monarch butterflies, are good examples of the current 47 insects face. Honeybees have been 48 because of disease, chemicals and lack of food. Drier weather in the U.S. West, driven by climate change, means less milkweed for butterflies to 49 , Wagner said. And changes in American agriculture 50 weeds and flowers they need for nectar (花蜜).
The recent scientific papers do not provide new data, so they show a big but 51 picture of a problem that is starting to get more attention. Scientists have 52 1 million insect species, while up to 4 million more are likely to be discovered, Berenbaum said.
Doug Tallamy of the University of Delaware was not part of the studies, but he said the research demonstrates how the world has “spent the last 30 years spending billions of dollars finding new ways to kill insects and 53 pennies (a small amount of money) working to preserve them”. In an email to the Associated Press, Tallamy said the good news was that people themselves can do a lot to 54 insect losses. “This is a global problem with a grassroots. 55 ,” he wrote.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Becoming a Birder
Last September, I drove to a protected wetland near my home in Oakland, and walked to the end of a pier and started looking at birds. Since then, my birding obsession has progressed at an alarming pace. I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alone.
Birding has proved more absorbing and peace-bringing than mindful reflection. While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus firmly on the present, and the usual buzz in my head becomes quiet. When I spot a species for the first time, I course with thrill while being entirely at peace.
I also feel a much deeper connection to the natural world. The passing of the seasons feels more detailed, marked by the arrival and disappearance of particular species instead of much slower changes in day length, temperature and greenery. I find myself noticing small shifts in the weather and small differences in habitat. I think about the tides.
So much more of the natural world feels close and accessible now. When I started birding, I remember thinking that I’d never see most of the species in my field guide. I had internalized the idea of nature as distant and remote — the province of nature documentaries and far-flung vacations. But in the past six months, I’ve seen soaring golden eagles and marveled at diving Pacific loons, all within an hour of my house.
It’s easy to think of birding as an escape from reality. Instead, I see it as immersion in the true reality. I don’t need to know who the main characters are on social media and what everyone is saying about them, when I can instead spend an hour trying to find a rare sparrow. It’s very clear to me which of those two activities is the more ridiculous. It’s not the one with the sparrow.
56.Why does the author describe his birding habit as”an obsession”?
A.To show his intense passion for birding.
B.To illustrate its peace-bringing mindful effect.
C.To highlight his rapid species-spotting progress.
D.To stress it’s more meaningful than social media.
57.The underlined phrase “seem impervious to” is closest in meaning to
A.seem sensitive to B.seem unaffected by
C.appear troubled by D.appear subject to
58.Which of the following descriptions is closest to a birder’s state of mind according to the passage?
A.Watching nature documentaries to feel close to wild birds.
B.Long-distance jogging in the woods to train for a marathon.
C.Fishing by a local pond engaged in the process of observation.
D.Travelling miles with the goal of checking a rare species off a list.
59.What life lesson does the author draw about birding?
A.Quality time spent in nature’s wonders leads to a joyful life.
B.Bird watching itself is more meaningful than one’s busy daily routines.
C.Focus on the immediate natural surroundings breeds true meaning in life.
D.One should live in the present rather than escape from reality to pursue joy.

In some Western parts, children of healthy weight have long become the exception. Now even in poor countries, childhood obesity (肥胖) is spreading faster than ever before. The problem is not new: the percentage of overweight children around the world went up in the 1980s, as junk food became a dietary staple. But the trend today is alarming. A report by UNICEF found that the number of school-aged children who are obese is, for the first time, higher than those who do not get enough food to stay healthy.
In Niue and the Cook Islands, nearly 40% of 5 — 19-year-olds are obese — the highest rates in the world. The south Pacific also has some of the worst adult obesity rates, fueled by shifting diets and a culture that prizes size. America ranks in the top 20 countries for childhood obesity, with a rate of 20%. In Europe, Hungary leads with 15%.
Poor countries are particularly ill-equipped to tackle this issue. Health systems there were built to fight hunger not obesity. Many babies are born underweight because of poor diets when their mothers are expecting them. That alters their metabolism (新陈代谢) and makes rapid weight gain and other long-term health problems more likely in adulthood. In South America and parts of Africa and the Middle East, the share of overweight children is already higher than in western Europe and is nearing the 45% seen in North America.
The reason is simple: cheap, heavily processed foods are dominating children’s diets worldwide, crowding out fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins. A UNICEF survey of 20 low- and middle-income countries found that more than half of babies aged 6 — 23 months in 13 countries had consumed sweet drinks or sugary foods the previous day. Even in Britain many ready-to-eat baby foods marketed as healthy are far from it. In countries with lax regulation, the meals are worse. A study of hundreds of baby foods sold in seven South-East Asian countries found that half were ultra-processed. A third contained additives that are not permitted under the Codex Alimentarius, the UN’s food-standards code.
But changing diets is hard. Ultra-processed foods are about 50% cheaper than fresh or minimally processed foods, according to the UN’s report on food systems. A global survey of school meals in 2024 found that 25% of schools served processed meats, 21% served sweets, 19% served deep-fried food and 14% provided sugar-sweetened drinks. Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.
Environmental pollution kills 1. 7 million children under the age of five every year worldwide. This is according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO warns that child deaths will increase greatly if pollution continues to worsen.
The most common causes of death among children aged one month to five years are diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia. This is according to the WHO. 67 This means providing access to safe water and sanitation, limiting exposure to dangerous chemicals, and improving waste management.
68 The WHO estimates that air pollution is responsible for about 6. 5 million premature, or early, deaths every year. That number includes nearly 600, 000 deaths of children under age five. Most of these deaths take place in developing countries.
Air pollution is a leveler between rich and poor, according to WHO environment and health chief Maria Neira. 69 And one of the most important ways to reduce air pollution is to produce cleaner fuels for cooking and heating. “Almost half of the world population is using dirty fuels for cooking, heating, and lighting at home. And, this is affecting very much mothers who are staying and cooking at home, but the children who are around mothers -- they are exposed as well. ” Early exposure to harmful pollutants can lead to increased risk of chronic respiratory disease, asthma, heart disease, stroke and cancer later in life.
Cleaning up how the world cooks, heats and lights homes and other buildings is a big- picture goal. The WHO is advising government departments and industries such as construction and the health sector to work together to clean up their environment.
70 The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has the following suggestions:
• Avoid walking where there is a high volume of vehicle traffic.
• Equip homes with air filters and air conditioning units.
• Limit your time outside if you live in an area that issues warnings about air quality.
• Wear high-grade, rated face masks tightly to the face when air quality is poor.
• Remove your clothes and wash immediately after entering your house if you live or commute in a very polluted area.
A.However, of all the environmental pollutants, air pollution is being called the most dangerous.
B.But what can individuals do to limit our family's exposure to air pollution?
C.Therefore, the WHO stresses that governments around the world need to take the lead on ensuring that children grow up in a clean environment.
D.The organization also says reducing environmental risks can prevent such deaths.
E.A polluted environment is a deadly one—particularly for young children.
F.Everybody, she says, needs to breathe.
IV.Summary Writing (共10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point( s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Breaking up is hard to do but men’s hearts hurt most
When it comes to break-ups, men suffer more emotional pain than women, a study has found. The first-of-its-kind analysis used online relationships to map the most common problems experienced by couples who told their stories outside the therapist’s office.
A team of researchers at Lancaster University helped to produce the report. Charlotte Entwistle, the lead author, said: “Most of what we know comes from studies of people in couples therapy: a specific set of people. We wanted to understand not only what relationship problems are most commonly experienced by the public, but who experiences by the public, but who experiences which problems more.”
To bridge the gap the team analysed the characteristics of more than 184,000 people who had posted their problems to an anonymous online forum, and they created a “map” of the most common issues.
Communication was the most frequent, cited by nearly one in five people, while one in eight reported that trust was a struggle. The outcomes came as no surprise but the team was taken aback at the obvious gender differences. The theme that kept cropping up was the “heartache” felt, and the team recorded specific words such as “regret”, “break up”, “cry”, and “heart-broken”.
Contrary to expectation, men talked about heartbreak significantly more than women. The findings suggest that the stereotype of men being less emotionally invested in relationships may be inaccurate.
The researchers also found that men were more likely to seek online professional help. Dr Ryan Boyd, the lead researcher, said: “When you remove the traditional social stigmas against men for seeking help and sharing their emotions, they seem just as invested in working through rough patches in their relationships as women.”
The researchers hope that an accurate picture of relationship problems could help couples avoid common setbacks. Boyd said: “This gives us serious hope that we can use help-seeking behavior to better understand all types of social and psychological issues.”
The study was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

Stronger rules that restrict the advertising and sales of unhealthy foods could help. So could financial aid to make good food cheaper. What children eat early shapes their tastes for life. Adult diets are habits fixed in childhood. Once formed, those tastes are hard to shift.
63.The author cites the specific obesity rates of Niue and the Cook Islands, America, and Hungary in Paragraph 2 primarily ________.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage
11.A.Caribbean curry house. B.Old Montreal.
C.Notre-Dame Basilica. D.Rue St. Denis.
12.A.By bus. B.By taxi. C.By metro. D.Walking.
13.A.The botanical garden. B.Notre-Dame Basilica.
C.The school for religious study. D.The art galleries and museums.
【答案】11.A 12.D 13.C
【原文】W: There are marvelous restaurants for sure all over Montreal and the good news is there are even several close to our headquarters in your hotel. If you’re looking for a light lunch, try the cafe across the street. You’ve got to get there early though because it closes at three p.m. There’s an excellent Caribbean curry house right next to our building too. If you really want to get out and about, you should grab a taxi or take the metro and head downtown to visit the city’s famous botanical garden, art galleries and museums. Make sure to visit Old Montreal which is not only the oldest part of the city but one of the oldest urban areas in North America. Once there, walking is by far the best and easiest way to get around. With the areas Cobblestone streets and historic buildings, you can almost imagine that you’re in Europe. Eh, Old Montreal’s most famous building is Notre-Dame Basilica, a major tourist stop. It’s a breathtaking church built sometime in the eighteen hundreds. Next to it is a school for religious study that was built in sixteen eighty seven. I always remember that date because it’s one of the oldest buildings in the city. Actually it’s one of the oldest buildings in the country. And if history isn’t your thing there are plenty of places to go for dinner or a quiet drink. I’d suggest going to Rue Saint Dennis for that. Anyway enjoy yourself.
Questions:
11. Which place is suggested by the speaker for a light lunch?
12. What is the best way to get around old Montreal?
13. Which of the following has the longest history?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
14.A.He has accumulated know-how.
B.He contributes a lot more value.
C.He learns from past mistakes and successes.
D.He is able to save troubled projects and lead them to success.
15.A.To get a raise. B.To get a promotion.
C.To become a fireman. D.To be the team leader.
16.A.Because he is eager to continue his role as a fireman.
B.Because he is the go-to guy who always gets called to put out fires.
C.Because he brings more technical know-how to each project.
D.Because he is the one who gets called to kick-start troubled projects.
【答案】14.B 15.A 16.D
【原文】M: During the seven years that I’ve been working with the aircraft part’s marketing team, I’ve accumulated know-how with each new project assignment. I think it’s fair to say that I contribute a lot more value to today than I did about seven years ago. One reason is that with each technical project I bring more technical know-how than I did before. I make a conscious effort to learn from past mistakes and successes and to make sure that each new project benefits from the lessons that I have learned in the previous ones. Another factor is leadership. The ability to lead troubled projects to success. When our Brazilian passenger aircraft project was in trouble last year, I stepped in. When distribution service projects in Germany and Canada nearly fell through this year. I stepped in. I think you’re familiar with my nickname “the Fireman”. I’m the go-to guy who gets called in to put out fires and get troubled projects going again. I’m eager to continue in this role and I think you’ll agree that I’m contributing more value now than when I was a newcomer. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Business today is about creating value at all levels and I’m all about value. Clients can tell the difference between the treatment they get from a company that values them and one that doesn’t. It’s easy to see the difference in the results, but it’s not so easy to be the one who produces those results. That’s where I come in. So that’s my pitch. I think you’ll agree that I’m due for a raise thank you.
Questions:
14. According to the speaker, what is his greatest strength?
15. What is the main purpose of this speech?
16. Why is the speaker called the fireman?
Questions 17 through 20 are bused on the following conversation.
17.A.Beautiful scenery in the countryside. B.Cross-country skiing.
C.Dangers of winter sports. D.Pain and pleasure in sports.
18.A.He can’t find good examples to illustrate his point.
B.He can’t find a peaceful place to do the assignment.
C.He can’t decide whether to include the effort part of skiing.
D.He doesn’t know how to describe the beautiful country scenery.
19.A.New ideas come up as you write.
B.Much time is spent on collecting data.
C.It’s hard to find a proper topic.
D.The writer’s point of view often changes.
20.A.How to revise a paper in an academic manner.
B.How to polish your arguments in a paper.
C.How to tell the main ideas in a paper effectively.
D.How to decide on relevant content for a paper.
【答案】17.B 18.C 19.A 20.D
【原文】M: Hello, Professor Jones.
W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today?
M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn’t coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me — one I take part in.
W: What sport did you choose?
M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing.
W: What are you going to say about skiing?
M: That’s the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country.
W: So why is that a problem?
M: As I start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods, I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that’s not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out. But now I don’t know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It’s not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds rolling by. That’s different.
W: Then you’ll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That’s common, right?
M: Yeah, I guess so ...

18. What problem does the man have while working on his paper?
19. What does the woman say is common in writing papers?
20. What is the conversation mainly about?

【答案】
21.the strongest 22.before 23.was set 24.when 25.how 26.It 27.using 28.within 29.expected 30.to act

22.考查时间状语从句。句意:但由于科学技术的进步,政府有足够的时间在海啸到来之前警告并疏散人员。根据语境可知,此处表示“在海啸到来之前”,应用连词before引导时间状语从句。故填before。
23.考查动词语态。句意:太平洋的第一个预警系统于1948年建立。此处是句子谓语,根据时间状语in 1948可知,句子应用一般过去时,主语system与动词set up之间是被动关系,应用被动语态,且主语是单数,be动词用was。故填was set。
24.考查定语从句。句意:关键的一步是在1963年,当时建立了一个全球地震测震仪网络。此处为关系词引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词1963,关系词在从句中作时间状语,所以使用关系副词when引导该定语从句。故填when。
25.考查宾语从句。句意:科学家们现在可以估计地震的规模、地面裂开的位置以及它在三维空间中的移动情况。此处为宾语从句,从句中缺少方式状语,表示“如何”,所以使用连接副词how引导该宾语从句。故填how。
26.考查代词。句意:它使用物理和统计模型来预测海啸高度。根据语境可知,此处指代上文提到的“the Pacific Ocean warning system”,应用代词it作主语,句首单词,首字母大写。故填It。
27.考查非谓语动词。句意:卫星现在可以利用雷达直接从太空测量海浪高度。此处作状语,主句的主语satellites与动词use之间存在主动关系,应使用现在分词,作方式状语。故填using。
28.考查介词。句意:初步估计现在可以在地震发生后几分钟内给出,随着收集到更多数据,这些估计会在接下来的几个小时里不断更新。此处表示“在……时间内”,应使用介词within,所以此处应填介词within。故填within。
29.考查非谓语动词。句意:然而,海啸高度的预测从来都不精确——不同地方的海啸高度可能比预期的高或低。此处为省略结构,完整形式为than it is expected,height与expect之间是被动关系,需用过去分词expected,表“被预期的”。故填expected。
30.考查非谓语动词。句意:因此,最好的选择是在那一刻迅速而冷静地采取行动。此处需用动词不定式作表语,说明the best choice的具体内容。故填to act。

【答案】56.A 57.B 58.C 59.C
【导语】这篇文章是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者通过观鸟的经历,专注当下、感受自然、获得内心平静,并从中领悟到生活的真谛。
56.推理判断题。根据第一段的“Since then, my birding obsession has progressed at an alarming pace. I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alone.(从那以后,我对观鸟的痴迷以惊人的速度发展。我已经见过 452 种鸟类,仅今年就有 307 种。)”和第二段的“While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus firmly on the present, and the usual buzz in my head becomes quiet. When I spot a species for the first time, I course with thrill while being entirely at peace.(观鸟时,我似乎对冷热饥渴都无动于衷。我的感官全然专注于当下,脑海中平日的喧嚣变得安静。当我第一次见到某个物种时,内心激动不已却又十分平静。)”可知,作者用obsession(痴迷)一词,展现自己对观鸟的极度热爱。投入大量时间见多种鸟类、观鸟时忽略生理需求、高度专注且因新发现极度兴奋均围绕 “强烈热爱” 展开。故选A项。
57.词句猜测题。根据本句“While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst.(观鸟时,我对冷、热、饥、渴都seem impervious to。)”以及下一句“My senses focus firmly on the present, and the usual buzz in my head becomes quiet. (我的感官牢牢聚焦于当下,脑海中的日常纷扰也随之安静下来。)”可知,观鸟时作者精神高度集中于当下,脑海中的冷热饥渴等杂念应是全都感觉不到了,“seem impervious to”在此处应为“不受……影响”之意。故选B项。
58.推理判断题。根据第二段第二句、第三句“While birding, I seem impervious to heat, cold, hunger and thirst. My senses focus firmly on the present, and the usual buzz in my head becomes quiet. (观鸟时,我似乎对冷热浑然不觉。我的感官牢牢聚焦于当下,脑海中的日常纷扰也随之安静下来。)以及第四段最后一句“But in the past six months, I’ve seen soaring golden eagles and marveled at diving Pacific loons, all within an hour of my house. (但在过去的六个月里,我亲眼目睹了翱翔的金雕,也为俯冲入水的太平洋潜鸟惊叹不已,这一切都发生在我家一小时车程的范围内。)”对自然细节的关注可知,观鸟者的状态是沉浸于观察过程中。C选项“在家附近的池塘边钓鱼,专注于观察过程”最符合文中描述的专注、沉浸、观察自然的状态。故选C项。
59.主旨大意题。根据最后一段前三句“It’s easy to think of birding as an escape from reality. Instead, I see it as immersion in the true reality. I don’t need to know who the main characters are on social media and what everyone is saying about them, when I can instead spend an hour trying to find a rare sparrow.

A.to argue that European policies are the most effective
B.to show the problem is global, affecting diverse regions
C.to rank the economic development levels of these places
D.to suggest the issue is most severe in Pacific Island nations
64.Which of the following is a major concern regarding childhood obesity in poor countries according to the passage?
A.Parents are not aware of the risks of obesity at all.
B.Children refuse to eat any fresh fruits or vegetables.
C.There is a complete lack of regulations on food advertising.
D.Health systems are not designed to deal with such problems.
65.The underlined word “lax” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A.strict B.effective C.loose D.detailed
66.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To criticize the food industry for promoting unhealthy foods.
B.To recommend specific lifestyle programs for obese children.
C.To analyze the global trend and challenges of childhood obesity.
D.To compare obesity rates between developed and poor countries.
根据第二段“In Niue and the Cook Islands, nearly 40% of 5 — 19-year-olds are obese — the highest rates in the world. The south Pacific also has some of the worst adult obesity rates, fueled by shifting diets and a culture that prizes size. America ranks in the top 20 countries for childhood obesity, with a rate of 20%. In Europe, Hungary leads with 15%.
根据第三段中“Poor countries are particularly ill-equipped to tackle this issue. Health systems there were built to fight hunger not obesity. (贫穷国家在解决这一问题上的能力尤其不足。那里的卫生系统是为了对抗饥饿而不是肥胖而建立的。)”可知,贫穷国家的主要问题是卫生系统并非针对肥胖问题设计。故选D项。
65.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“A study of hundreds of baby foods sold in seven South-East Asian countries found that half were ultra-processed. A third contained additives that are not permitted under the Codex Alimentarius, the UN’s food-standards code. (一项对七个东南亚国家销售的数百种婴儿食品的研究发现,其中一半是超加工食品。三分之一含有联合国食品标准法典不允许的添加剂。)”可知,这些国家的婴儿食品有一半是不健康的,且三分之一含违规的添加剂,这表明食品监管不够严格,画线词所在句意思是“在监管宽松的国家,膳食更糟糕”,画线词意思与loose“宽松的”接近。故选C项。
66.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“In some Western parts, children of healthy weight have long become the exception. Now even in poor countries, childhood obesity (肥胖) is spreading faster than ever before. (在西方一些地区,保持健康体重的孩子早已成为例外。现在,即使在贫穷国家,儿童肥胖的蔓延速度也比以往任何时候都要快。)”可知,文章首段指出全球儿童肥胖趋势,后文从加工食品、贫穷国家困境等分析原因,最后提出应对的方法。由此推知,文章旨在分析儿童肥胖的全球趋势与挑战。故选C项。

【答案】Dear Mom and Dad,
As I stand on the threshold of adulthood, I’m writing to express my deepest gratitude for everything you have given me. Looking back, it’s your quiet, consistent support that has shaped me most. I still remember how, before every important exam, Mom would prepare my favorite meals and Dad would simply pat my shoulder — never pressuring, just silently believing in me. That unwavering faith taught me more about courage and calm than any words could.
In the years to come, I may stumble, I may wander, but I will always carry your love and lessons within me. I promise to face challenges with the same resilience you showed me, to pursue my dreams with integrity, and to become someone who makes you proud not just by achievement, but by character.
Thank you for being my anchors and my wings.
With all my love,
Li Hua
