Which book you should read based on your next travel destination
Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.
Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip.
Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.
A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America.
Consider picking up “The Great Gatsby” if you’re going to The Hamptons in New York.
Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decadence, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons.
As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijksmuseum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaptation of this novel has ever become its own tourist spot.
21.If you are into parallel existence and you are full of imagination, which book would you like to pick up?
A.The Fault in Our Stars. B.One Hundred Years of Solitude.
C.1Q84. D.The Great Gatsby.
22.Which one of the followings is NOT true?
A.Generations of the Buentia family live in their South-American town.
B.One Hundred Years of Solitude is a book mainly about sights of South America.
C.“West Egg” and “East Egg” are both place names.
D.The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
23.An excerpt from the book: One might marvel at the insanity (疯狂) of the situation: A mother sends her16-year-old daughter alone with a 17-year old boy out into a foreign city.
According to the introduction mentioned above, which city is probably this foreign city?
A.Tokyo. B.New York. C.Amsterdam. D.Sao Paulo.
B
For most of my early life, I lived with logic and accuracy at the center. But under this orderly life, a soft longing grew in me. I wanted a way to express things that went beyond words, beyond numbers, and beyond the systems I knew.
Art runs in my family. My father was one of India’s well-respected art critics. So from a young age, I often heard people talk about art, its forms, and what it meant. But it took me many years and a lot of personal growth to realize that my own path wouldn’t be about imitation (模仿) , criticizing or commenting on art. Instead, it would be about creating — in a simple open-ended way.
When I finally let myself start painting, I didn’t aim to be perfect. I just wanted to focus on the act of painting itself. Abstract art became a door for me: It let me connect with my feelings, stay in the moment, and capture (刻画) things words couldn’t say.
In the early days of painting, my works were all about “stillness” — they used only one or two colors, and they were very calm. That matched how I felt back then: I needed to slow down, think and listen to what my heart was saying. Later, as my life changed — like when I was delighted, tried new things, and learned to accept life’s unexpected turns — my paintings changed too. Bright colors started to appear, and my brushstrokes became freer and more natural.
For people who stand in front of my works, I hope my paintings give them an invitation — not to understand me, but to find something of their own in the art. At its core, my journey as an abstract artist isn’t just my own story; it’s a story everyone can relate to; it’s a reminder: Art, like life, is an ongoing conversation — one that asks us to feel, to reflect and to trust what comes naturally.
24.Why did a soft longing grow in the author?
A.He was inspired by others to create art.
B.He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.
C.He was eager to be recognized as an artist.
D.He desired to express personal emotions in a different way.
25.What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The author’s mood. B.The value of painting.
C.The style of artwork. D.The challenge of painting.
26.What happened to the author’s artwork over time?
A.It became well received. B.It witnessed a marked change.
C.It mainly focused on still life. D.It featured imitation of works by local artists.
27.What does the author expect his audiences to do?
A.Analyze his background. B.Learn to paint without delay.
C.Reflect on their own feelings. D.Talk with him in person.
C
The Unexpected Wave of Cultural Exchange
On January 15, 2025, a surprising event shocked social media users in both China and the United States. Many American TikTok users, known as “TT refugees”, joined the Chinese social platform Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) after the U.S. government announced a ban on TikTok starting January 19. This sudden migration brought an unprecedented (前所未有的) cultural exchange, reshaping the way people in both countries viewed each other.
When American users first explored Xiaohongshu, they were amazed by what they saw. Modern Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing were vibrant (充满活力的) and highly developed, offering diverse food cultures and lively lifestyles. This new perspective contradicted (与……相矛盾) the stereotypes (刻板印象) portrayed in traditional Western media. At the same time, Chinese users learned from “TT refugees” that the U. S. also faced challenges like high housing costs and limited healthcare access, which were rarely shown in Chinese media.
For years, traditional media in both countries have shaped narrow and often inaccurate impressions of the other. However, platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin (TikTok in China) are breaking these one-sided narratives (叙述). American users are now discovering China’s rapid modernization, while Chinese users are gaining a clearer picture of the realities behind the “American Dream”.
This online interaction is only part of a broader trend. Policies like China’s “144-hour visa-free transit” have encouraged more Western tourists to visit China and share their experiences through videos. These personal accounts are helping to break the “information bubbles” created by traditional media, fostering mutual understanding and respect.
As Chairman Mao once said, “History is created by the people.” Although the long-term impact of this wave of cultural exchange on international relations remains uncertain, it is clear that it has laid a solid foundation for improving understanding and reducing misunderstandings between the two nations. For those seeking peace and truth, this development is a step forward.
Finally, as an observer of such cultural exchanges, I warmly welcome more sincere and friendly “TT refugees” to join platforms like Xiaohongshu. Together, we can explore the authentic (真实的) beauty of this colorful world.
28.What can be inferred about the role of platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin in cultural exchange?
A.They spread traditional media narratives.
B.They provide a space for people to share authentic stories and break stereotypes.
C.They only focus on entertainment content.
D.They discourage cross-cultural interactions.
29.What does the word “bubbles” in “helping to break the ‘information bubbles’” most likely mean?
A.Fragile materials. B.Isolated information environments.
C.Expensive costs. D.Entertaining stories.
30.What challenges faced by the US. did Chinese users learn about from “TT refugees”?
A.Modernization problems. B.High housing costs and limited healthcare access.
C.Stereotypes in media. D.Lack of cultural exchange platforms.
31.How does the author view the impact of the cultural exchange brought by the “TT refugees”?
A.Skeptical. B.Indifferent.
C.Positive and hopeful. D.Critical of its effectiveness.
D
One after another, injured koalas with burned paws and singed fur were carried into the rescue center. Suffering from severe dehydration and fear, they received urgent care from dedicated staff who bandaged their wounds, swaddled them gently, and placed them in baskets equipped with a familiar comfort: eucalyptus (桉树) leaves.
This heartbreaking scene became frequent as catastrophic wildfires, which have consumed millions of acres in Australia, forced the rescue of dozens of koalas from burning trees and ash-covered ground. The plight of the koala, an iconic Australian symbol, has raised serious concerns among conservationists and scientists. They are questioning how to protect biodiversity in a country already experiencing intense fires, extreme heat, and water shortage — a nation that already has one of the highest rates of species extinction in the world.
Although koalas have adapted to coexist with periodic wildfires, they now face threats on an unprecedented (史无前例的) scale. These challenges stem not only from climate change but also from extensive human development. The rise of urban areas and agriculture has split the koalas’ natural habitats, isolating populations and reducing their ability to survive disasters. In some regions, koala numbers have dropped by as much as 80%, though accurate counts across the vast continent remain difficult to obtain.
“The fires are a tragedy for our wildlife,” said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital, the only facility of its kind globally. “We have these unique animals that exist nowhere else on Earth, and we are failing to protect them. This should serve as a massive wake-up call for everyone.”
The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated conservation efforts. It is clear that without significant intervention, the future of this beloved species remains uncertain. The loss of the koala would not only be an ecological disaster but also a cultural tragedy for Australia and the world.
32.What does the underlined word “plight” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Tough situation. B.Special habit. C.Cute appearance. D.Polluted environment.
33.Why are koalas now facing more serious threats than before?
A.The Australian government ignores their survival.
B.Climate change and human development bring risks.
C.Conservationists have no effective protection measures.
D.Their main food (eucalyptus. leaves) has sharply decreased.
34.What can we learn about the Koala Hospital from Cheyne Flanagan’s statement?
A.It is the world’s only koala-specialized medical facility.
B.It is facing great financial pressure in rescuing injured koalas.
C.It plans to expand its scale to better protect koalas in the future.
D.It has successfully saved most of the koalas injured in wildfires.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Impact of Australian wildfires on biodiversity.
B.Rescue of injured koalas after Australian wildfires.
C.Koalas’ severe threats and urgent need for conservation.
D.The living habits of koalas and their dependence on eucalyptus leaves.
Challenging, fun and engaging hobbies have the power to make us happier and healthier. 36 Here is how you can start and discover things you don’t yet know you’ll like.
Start small. Ease in to figure out if it’s right for you. For instance, sign up for a one-time dance class rather than a set of eight. 37 Say you enjoy learning to swim, but the next step is competing, and you don’t want to do that. Just stop there — you have spent enough of the day pushing yourself.
38 When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? The answer could lead you to an appealing hobby. Revisiting activities you loved when you were young is a really helpful place to start. Those little things that once made you lose track of time often hold clues to what still excites you.
Ask yourself how you want to feel. 39 They can help you clear your mind and relax. Consider how exactly you want an activity to make you feel. If you long for a break from overthinking, knitting could be a good choice to relax you. If you want to be socially connected, joining a book club can let you interact with others and build warm connections.
Keeping an open mind, even if it doesn’t seem your thing. We’re wired as humans to be curious and open, but in a very burned-out world, we forget that. So next time someone hands you a flier or invites you to tag along to an event, seize the opportunity. 40
A.Take a trip back in time.
B.Hobbies present an escape.
C.Think about your future career.
D.Plus, they often foster connections with others.
E.Your skills improve as you practise new hobbies.
F.It’s also smart to resist the pressure to overcommit.
G.It could be something you never imagined you’d love.

Alex was already under a heavy burden, but fate suddenly took an unexpected turn. This man from Detroit was facing a financial problem and was planning to pawn (典当) his wedding ring. Just then, he met someone who seemed to be also in need of help. What happened next changed his life forever.
On his way to American Jewelry and Loan, Alex noticed a man who seemed to be blind and struggling.
“Excuse me, sir,” a voice called out weakly. “Could you help me stand up?”
Alex looked down to see the man sitting on the kerb (路缘), dark sunglasses covering his eyes, appearing to struggle with mobility. Without hesitation, Alex extended his hand. “I’m more than glad to lend you my hand,” he said warmly, helping the stranger to his feet.
“Thank you, brother,” said the man, adjusting his voice. “I hate to ask, but...could you spare some money? I haven’t eaten today.”
Alex’s heart sank. He was about to pawn his most precious possession, yet faced with someone in even greater need. Alex hesitated for a moment. He knew he didn’t have much to spare, but looking at the man’s desperate situation, he couldn’t bring himself to say no.
“I’ll have money after pawning my wedding ring. I’ll give you a few dollars,” he promised, even though his own stomach hurt with worry.
The man’s expression transformed suddenly, his sunglasses coming off to reveal bright, grateful eyes. “My name is James,” he said, extending his hand. “I create content about kindness for social media. But more importantly, I’m going to help you.”
Alex was shocked. He realized that James wasn’t blind at all.

The stormy skies have decided to show their anger and the wind is racing around, eager to make things difficult. Because of this wild weather, our school is closing early today. Remember this isn’t a holiday where you disappear into the sunset or rain! Standards must not drop.
At exactly 1:00 pm, all students are to gather in the school hall, where our day will come to an early end. Year 7 students will leave first at 1:15 pm. And then Year 8 students will leave 15 minutes later. The rest of the year groups will follow one by one. The order will be Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and so on. Year 13 will leave last at 2:45 pm.
Please remember, even though the school may take a break tomorrow to recover, you’ll need to check your accounts for updates. The clouds may make up their minds by morning, and we must be ready to respect them and respond. If you are not back in class, then your teachers will be on the screen to guide you through the day.

A
Which book you should read based on your next travel destination

根据第一段中“Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip. (日本著名作家村上春树创造了另一个1984,名为1Q84,在那里一切都感觉不对劲,一切都略有不同。以日本东京为背景,这本反乌托邦、充满神秘的奇幻小说一定会让你在旅途中着迷)”可知,《1Q84》这本书涉及平行存在,充满神秘,因此适合对平行存在感兴趣、充满想象力的读者。故选C项。
22.细节理解题。根据第二段中“A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. (作为一部重要的文学作品,加布里埃尔·加西亚·马尔克斯的经典作品讲述了布恩迪亚家族几代人在南美小镇上的生活)”和第三段中“Although the “West Egg” and “East Egg” in the classic novel more greatly resemble the Great-Neck and Port-Washington peninsulas (半岛) on Long Island, F. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. (加西亚·马尔克斯的魔幻现实主义与他丰富的描写相结合,使这本书成为参观南美洲一些令人惊叹的景点的完美读物)”可知,B项“《百年孤独》是一本主要描写南美洲风景的书”与文意不符。故选B项。
23.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam.

根据文章第一段“I wanted a way to express things that went beyond words, beyond numbers, and beyond the systems I knew. (我渴望一种方式,来表达那些超越语言、超越数字、超越我所知体系的事物。)”可知,作者内心萌生的柔软渴望,是希望用不同于以往逻辑与精确体系的方式来表达个人情感与体验。故选D。
25.词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“In the early days of painting, my works were all about ‘stillness’ — they used only one or two colors, and they were very calm. That matched how I felt back then… (在刚开始绘画时,我的作品都关乎‘静谧’——它们只使用一两种颜色,非常平静。那与我当时的感受相符……)”可推知,划线词“That”指代的是前一句描述的早期画作风格,即只使用一两种颜色、非常平静的风格。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Later, as my life changed — like when I was delighted, tried new things, and learned to accept life’s unexpected turns — my paintings changed too. Bright colors started to appear, and my brushstrokes became freer and more natural. (后来,随着我的生活发生变化——比如当我感到欣喜、尝试新事物,并学会接受生活中意想不到的转折时——我的画作也随之改变。明亮的色彩开始涌现,我的笔触也变得更加自由、自然。)”可知,作者的画作风格随着时间的推移发生了显著的变化。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“For people who stand in front of my works, I hope my paintings give them an invitation — not to understand me, but to find something of their own in the art. (对于站在我作品前的人们,我希望我的画作能给他们一份邀请——不是去理解我,而是在艺术中找到属于他们自己的东西。)”可推知,作者期望观众能在艺术中找到属于他们自己的东西,由此可推知,作者期望观众在画作前反思自身的感受。故选C。

根据第二段“Modern Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing were vibrant and highly developed, offering diverse food cultures and lively lifestyles. This new perspective contradicted the stereotypes portrayed in traditional Western media. At the same time, Chinese users learned from “TT refugees” that the U.S. also faced challenges like high housing costs and limited healthcare access, which were rarely shown in Chinese media.(上海、北京、成都和重庆等现代中国城市充满活力,高度发达,提供多样化的饮食文化和充满活力的生活方式。这种新的视角与西方传统媒体所描绘的刻板印象相矛盾。与此同时,中国用户从“TT难民”那里了解到,美国也面临着高昂的住房成本和有限的医疗保健等挑战,这些在中国媒体上很少出现。)”以及第三段“However, platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin (TikTok in China) are breaking these one-sided narratives.(然而,小红书和抖音(中国的TikTok)等平台正在打破这些片面的叙事。)”
根据第二段“Modern Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing were vibrant and highly developed, offering diverse food cultures and lively lifestyles. This new perspective contradicted the stereotypes portrayed in traditional Western media. At the same time, Chinese users learned from “TT refugees” that the U.S. also faced challenges like high housing costs and limited healthcare access, which were rarely shown in Chinese media.(上海、北京、成都和重庆等现代中国城市充满活力,高度发达,提供多样化的饮食文化和充满活力的生活方式。这种新的视角与西方传统媒体所描绘的刻板印象相矛盾。与此同时,中国用户从“TT难民”那里了解到,美国也面临着高昂的住房成本和有限的医疗保健等挑战,这些在中国媒体上很少出现。)”以及第四段“This online interaction is only part of a broader trend. Policies like China’s “144-hour visa-free transit” have encouraged more Western tourists to visit China and share their experiences through videos. These personal accounts are helping to break the “information bubbles” created by traditional media, fostering mutual understanding and respect.(这种在线互动只是更广泛趋势的一部分。中国“144小时过境免签”等政策鼓励了更多西方游客来中国旅游,并通过视频分享他们的经历。这些个人叙述有助于打破传统媒体制造的“信息bubbles”,促进相互理解和尊重。)”可知,传统媒体给两国民众塑造了片面且不准确的印象,此处information bubbles应指人们被局限在狭隘信息中、难以接触多元内容的封闭信息环境,bubbles对应“孤立的信息环境”。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第二段“At the same time, Chinese users learned from “TT refugees” that the U.S. also faced challenges like high housing costs and limited healthcare access, which were rarely shown in Chinese media.(与此同时,中国用户从“TT难民”那里了解到,美国也面临着高昂的住房成本和有限的医疗保健等挑战,这些在中国媒体上很少出现。)”
通读全文,根据最后一段“Finally, as an observer of such cultural exchanges, I warmly welcome more sincere and friendly “TT refugees” to join platforms like Xiaohongshu. Together, we can explore the authentic (真实的) beauty of this colorful world.(最后,作为这种文化交流的观察者,我热烈欢迎更多真诚友好的“TT难民”加入小红书这样的平台。我们可以一起探索这个多彩世界的真实之美)”可知,作者对该文化交流现象的肯定与期待,态度积极且充满希望。故选C。

【答案】32.A 33.B 34.A 35.C

根据第三段“These challenges stem not only from climate change but also from extensive human development.(这些挑战不仅源于气候变化,还源于大规模的人类发展活动。)”
根据第四段““The fires are a tragedy for our wildlife,” said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital, the only facility of its kind globally.(“火灾对我们的野生动物来说是一场悲剧,”考拉医院临床主任Cheyne Flanagan说,该医院是全球唯一的同类设施。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“Although koalas have adapted to coexist with periodic wildfires, they now face threats on an unprecedented (史无前例的) scale.(尽管考拉已经适应了与周期性的野火共存,但它们现在面临着前所未有的威胁。)”和最后一段“The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated conservation efforts.(这一形势凸显了采取协调保护措施的急迫需要。)”、“The loss of the koala would not only be an ecological disaster but also a cultural tragedy for Australia and the world.(考拉的消失,不仅对澳大利亚乃至全世界是一场生态灾难,更将是一场文化悲剧。)”

A. curious好奇的;B. committed忠诚的;C. determined坚定的;D. awkward尴尬的。 故选A项。
A. showcase陈列柜;B. spring弹簧;C. store商店;D. star星星。 且后文“We ________ everywhere for the spring, but in vain.”
A. searched搜寻;B. wandered闲逛;C. paused暂停;D. traveled旅行。根据后文““I’m sorry, but you’ll have to pay for the _______ pen,” she said.” search everywhere for sth. 故选A项。
A. relaxation放松;B. delight高兴;C. relief宽慰;D. embarrassment尴尬。根据前文“We ________ everywhere for the spring, but in vain.”
根据前文“Eager and ________, he pressed the top repeatedly — until, with a pop, its tiny ________ inside flew out, bouncing across the floor, and disappeared. We _______ everywhere for the spring, but in vain.”
A. applying申请;B. accounting解释;C. preparing准备;D. longing渴望。根据后文““But I don’t have enough left,” he muttered sadly. “Tim, would you like to lend me the money? I’ll pay you back next week, I promise” he begged.” long for 意为“渴望”。故选D项。
A. reduced减少;B. weighed称重;C. covered支付;D. estimated估计。
根据后文两个问句“Was he avoiding it on purpose? Did he not value our friendship enough to ________?”
句意:他是不是不够重视我们的友谊,以至于不信守承诺?A. keep his word信守诺言;B. break his promise违背承诺;C. achieve his dream实现梦想;D. boost his confidence增强信心。根据前文““Tim, would you like to lend me the money? I’ll pay you back next week, I promise” he begged.” 故选A项。
A. silent沉默的;B. calm平静的;C. occupied忙碌的;D. focused专注的。根据前文作者的心中的疑问“________ crept into my mind: Was he avoiding it on purpose? Did he not value our friendship enough to ________?”以及后文“Next time, just ask him ________.” 故选A项。
且根据后文“So at the store again, I took a deep breath and said, “Hey, remember that star pen? Did you ________ to forget to pay me back?””
“Did you happen to...?”
A. struck打击;B. slipped滑走,溜走;C. changed改变;D. crossed穿过。根据前文“Oh my gosh I totally forgot!”
A. explanation解释;B. apology道歉;C. communication交流;D. complaint抱怨。

Dear Chris,
Last Friday afternoon, I joined a meaningful “Respecting and Loving the Elderly” volunteer activity organized by our school at Peace Square.
We started by chatting with the elderly residents from a nearby community. We listened to their stories about the past, which were fascinating. Then, we performed simple songs and dances for them. Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter was truly rewarding. We also helped clean up the square together.
It wasn’t just about helping; it was about connecting with a different generation. I feel really happy to have made a small difference.
Yours,
Li Hua

Before Alex could say anything, James explained to him what he was doing. He had been filming a social experiment to encourage people’s kindness in difficult situations. Alex’s selfless act had deeply moved him. “Your act of kindness today has inspired me. I’ve seen a lot of people in need, but your willingness to help someone else, even when you were in such a difficult situation, is truly remarkable. I’m going to share your story,” said James. “And I’ve also prepared something for you.” He handed Alex an envelope, saying it contained a surprise. Alex stared at the envelope, stunned by the sudden twist.
Alex opened the envelope hesitantly. Inside was a check for $10,000 and a note saying “Kindness deserves reward.” Tears welled up in his eyes as he read the words. “I... I don’t know what to say,” Alex stammered. James put a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “Just keep being the kind person you are. Your act has shown me that there is still so much good in this world.” From that day on, Alex’s life took a positive turn. He used the money to get back on his feet financially. He also started to volunteer in his community, paying forward the kindness he had received.
