A Book Worth Reading
Good morning, everyone. Today I want to recommend a book titled Coming Home to you. The book was written by a young girl Sun Yue and dictated by her father Sun Haiyang. It mainly tells Sun Haiyang’s life experience before and after the loss of his son Sun Zhuo. The writing is delicate and smooth. While reading the book, you can feel the hardships Sun Haiyang has gone through. The purpose of the book is not to make readers cry but to bring power to those who have similar experiences as Sun Haiyang’s family. It is such a moving story that it is worth reading again and again.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening!
I froze, not expecting such a response. Mrs. Gable’s gentle voice explained how her own son had once received similar grace after an accident. “Honesty matters more than any scratch,” she repeated, firmly declining my offer to pay. “Someone gave him a second chance back then, and now I’m giving you one.” Her final advice to “drive safer” lingered in my heart long after we hung up, filling me with warmth that melted all my earlier anxieties. Her unexpected forgiveness taught me that courage to be honest often meets with understanding.
That night, I told my dad everything. He leaned against the table, listening without interruption. When I finished, he pulled me into a hug — his arms steady, like always. “I’m proud of you,” he said in a firm voice. “You chose integrity over fear. That’s the mark of a man.” We talked for hours, about responsibility, about second chances, about how kindness spread around. Before bed, he handed me a check. “For your books,” he said gently. Dad was right — taking responsibility wasn’t a burden. It was freedom. And that birthday, I didn’t just grow older — I grew up.

W: Great! So what’s it like?
M: Well, it’s within walking distance of the university. And the city center is only a bus ride away.
W: OK, that’s a good start. But what’s it like inside? To be honest, when I saw the advertisement, I didn’t think it would be enough for the three of us.
M: Well, it’s got three bedrooms and a nice living room, so we’ll have our own space to work and somewhere to sit together and there’s no need to decorate.
W: That sounds good. The advertisement said there’s no garage, but I can park on the road outside.
M: Yes. It’s a nice house. I suppose it’s not exactly modern, but it’s clean and has all the things you need: washing machine, cooker and fridge. There’s no garden, which is a shame. But all in all, I’m happy with it.

W: That lift eats more food than I do. It should pay rent.
M: Remember last week when the pizza rode up and down like a VIP with a free ticket.
W: Yes, extra tour. Cold cheese, no tip!

This book first gives some details about my life’s challenges. I was abandoned at birth in Cambodia, but then my life changed completely after being adopted by a lovely, generous family in Singapore when I was five. There, I met a lot of people who helped improve my life, including my wife. She brings me strength and happiness every day. I am grateful for everything I’ve been through and all the lessons I’ve had. Now over 20,000 copies of the book have been sold, and that makes me feel so honored. To express this thankfulness, I will donate fifty percent of my book’s profits to a children’s home in Cambodia. I want to share this wealth with kids worldwide who are suffering from a lack of food, education or opportunity. Lastly, I’d like to send this message to all those facing hard times. There are people out there who care about you, and if you believe in yourself and others, life will always take you to a brighter place. Don’t stop believing.

In 1974, Surinder Gupta moved with his wife, Shashi, and their newborn son, Shaminder, to New Orleans for medical school. This move was a world away from his established life in Baton Rouge, where a lively Indian community had welcomed him. In New Orleans, he felt the heavy weight of loneliness, and was forced to build a new life from the ground up.
One bitterly cold winter night, Shaminder developed a dangerously high fever. Around 3 a.m., the young parents wrapped him tightly and rushed to a 24-hour drugstore. Their relief upon getting the medicine soon gave way to a new worry. Returning to the parking lot, they found their car gone, with only a note left saying it had been towed (拖) by City Impound. Panic set in. They were left with too little money to afford a taxi ride and they knew no one to call for help.
Just then, it occurred to Gupta that there was a telephone directory in his bag. With a faint hope, he went to a public phone booth (亭). “I started looking for names like ‘Singh’ and ‘Walia’, common names from our home state of Punjab,” Gupta recalled. Fortune smiled upon them. The first person to answer his call was a man named Sukhdev Walia. Not only was Walia from their hometown community but lived close by. Hearing their predicament, Walia responded immediately. “Don’t worry. Stay where you are. I’m coming,” he said.
Despite the freezing temperature, Walia drove to their rescue. “He was a benefactor for us at that particular point in time,” Gupta remembered emotionally. Walia not only sent them home but helped Gupta deal with the complicated process of fetching his car.
From that fateful night, a deep friendship blossomed. Bonded by shared culture, language, and the experience of building a new life in New Orleans, the two families became inseparable. They shared weekly meals, celebrated festivals together, and became like one large, extended family.
Then, life took a beautiful turn. Years later, Walia’s nephew and Gupta’s daughter, who had grown up alongside each other, fell in love. “Their paths kept crossing, back and forth, until one day… they married,” Gupta said, smiling.
24.What can we learn about Gupta when he first moved to New Orleans?
A.He was in bad need of building a new life.
B.He was warmly welcomed by the local community.
C.He couldn’t communicate with the locals smoothly.
D.He had difficulty with coursework in medical school.
25.What caused the young parents to panic in the parking lot?
A.Their son’s fever got worse.
B.They couldn’t find a phone booth.
C.Their car had been taken away.
D.They couldn’t understand the note.
26.What does the underlined word “predicament” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Situation. B.Offer. C.Ambition. D.Schedule.
27.What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A.Family ties are the most important in life.
B.Moving to a new community is challenging.
C.Lasting bonds can grow from unexpected help.
D.One should always help the strangers in trouble.
【答案】24.A 25.C 26.A 27.C
根据第一段中“In New Orleans, he felt the heavy weight of loneliness, and was forced to build a new life from the ground up. (在新奥尔良,他感到强烈的孤独感,被迫从头开始建立新的生活。)”可知,Gupta刚搬到新奥尔良时,急需建立新的生活。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Returning to the parking lot, they found their car gone, with only a note left saying it had been towed (拖) by City Impound. Panic set in. (回到停车场,他们发现他们的车不见了,只留下一张纸条,上面写着它被城市扣押所拖走了。恐慌袭来。)”可知,两人恐慌的原因是车被拖走。故选C项。
26.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Returning to the parking lot, they found their car gone, with only a note left saying it had been towed (拖) by City Impound. Panic set in. They were left with too little money to afford a taxi ride and they knew no one to call for help. (回到停车场,他们发现他们的车不见了,只留下一张纸条,上面写着它被城市扣押所拖走了。恐慌袭来。他们剩下的钱太少了,坐不起出租车,他们也不知道该向谁求助。)”和画线词的下文“Don’t worry. Stay where you are. I’m coming (别担心。待在原地别动。我来了)”可知,Walia是听说了Gupta一家深夜遭遇车被拖走、没钱打车的困境后,立刻回应,提供帮助,画线词意思应该是“艰难的处境,困境”,与Situation“情况”意思接近。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第四段中“Despite the freezing temperature, Walia drove to their rescue. (尽管气温极低,Walia还是驱车前来营救。)”和第五段中“From that fateful night, a deep friendship blossomed. Bonded by shared culture, language, and the experience of building a new life in New Orleans, the two families became inseparable. (从那个决定命运的夜晚开始,一段深厚的友谊开始绽放。由于共同的文化、语言和在新奥尔良建立新生活的经历,这两个家庭变得密不可分。)”可知,文章聚焦的是Gupta一家在困境中得到陌生人Walia的帮助,之后两家结成深厚友谊的故事。因此,作者主要是想传达“意外相助催生持久纽带”的信息。故选C项。
C
A study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, found that eating fruit may reduce the effects of air pollution on lung function.
Led by Pimpika Kaewsri, a PhD student from the University of Leicester’s Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability in the UK, the research addresses a pressing issue: over 90% of the global population is exposed to air pollution exceeding WHO guidelines, and many studies link higher pollution exposure to reduced lung function. Notably, a healthy diet — especially one high in fruit and vegetables — is tied to better lung function, so Kaewsri’s team set out to explore if diet or specific food groups could lower pollution’s harm to lung function.
Using data from around 200, 000 participants in the UK Biobank, the team compared participants’ dietary patterns (including fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain intake) with their lung function (measured by FEV1, the volume of air breathed in per second) and their exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5, tiny particles ≤2.5 micrometers from sources like vehicle exhaust and
industrial processes). They also took account of other factors such as age, height, and socioeconomic status. The results showed that for every 5μg/m³ increase in PM2.5 exposure, women with low fruit intake saw a 78.1ml drop in FEV1, while those with high fruit intake had only a 57.5ml reduction.
Kaewsri explained that the study confirmed a healthy diet relates to better lung function in both men and women, regardless of pollution exposure. Specifically, women who ate four or more fruit portions daily had smaller lung function declines linked to pollution — likely due to natural antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in fruit, which may ease oxidative stress from PM2.5, cancelling out some of pollution’s harm. She also noted that men in the study generally ate less fruit than women, which might explain why this effect against pollution was only observed in women.
Kaewsri plans to extend the research by exploring whether diet can influence changes in lung function over time.
28.What did the study led by Kaewsri aim to find out?
A.What food groups are considered to be a healthy diet.
B.Whether diet reduces pollution’s damage to lung function.
C.How over 90% of people are exposed to higher air pollution.
D.Whether air pollution is closely linked to reduced lung function.
29.How does the team get the results?
A.By examining the antioxidant content in different fruits.
B.By increasing the participants’ intake of healthy food.
C.By carrying out some experiments in the lab.
D.By analyzing previous statistics from the UK.
30.What can be inferred about men in the study?
A.They often ate more fruit than women.
B.They showed no fruit’s protective effect.
C.They were exposed to more air pollution.
D.They had better lung function than women.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Fruit Intake: A Surprising Key to Healthier Lungs
B.Air Pollution: Endless Harm to Lung Function
C.Balanced Diet: A Vital Influence on Human Health
D.Lung Health: Largely Dependent on Fruit Intake
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.B 31.A

根据第二段中的“Notably, a healthy diet — especially one high in fruit and vegetables — is tied to better lung function, so Kaewsri’s team set out to explore if diet or specific food groups could lower pollution’s harm to lung function. (值得注意的是,健康的饮食——尤其是富含水果和蔬菜的饮食——与更好的肺功能相关,因此凯维西里的团队着手探究饮食或特定食物类别是否能够降低污染对肺功能的损害。)”可知,该研究的目的是查明饮食是否能减轻污染对肺功能的破坏。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Using data from around 200, 000 participants in the UK Biobank, the team compared participants’ dietary patterns (including fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain intake) with their lung function (measured by FEV1, the volume of air breathed in per second) and their exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5, tiny particles ≤2.5 micrometers from sources like vehicle exhaust and industrial processes). They also took account of other factors such as age, height, and socioeconomic status.
根据第四段中的“She also noted that men in the study generally ate less fruit than women, which might explain why this effect against pollution was only observed in women. (她还指出,参与研究的男性通常比女性吃的水果更少,这或许能解释为什么这种对抗污染的效果只在女性身上被观察到。)”可知,研究中的男性没有显现出水果对肺功能的保护作用。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段中的“A study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, found that eating fruit may reduce the effects of air pollution on lung function. (在荷兰阿姆斯特丹举行的欧洲呼吸学会大会上公布的一项研究发现,吃水果或许能减轻空气污染对肺功能的影响。)”可知,全文围绕“吃水果有助于减轻空气污染对肺功能的损害”这一核心发现展开,因此“Fruit Intake: A Surprising Key to Healthier Lungs(水果摄入量:打造健康肺部的意外关键)”最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-metre room provides a treadmill (跑步机) music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use. A refundable deposit (可退还的押金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally new. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Centre published a report which says that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.
32.Which of the following is a potential advantage of shared gym rooms over traditional gyms?
A.They offer a wider variety of group exercise classes.
B.They are more suitable for large-scale social activities.
C.They are cheaper as they require no deposit.
D.They might be more conveniently located near neighborhoods.
33.What is the correct process for using a shared gym room?
A.Scan the code, book the room, then locate it.
B.Pay the deposit, watch TV, then connect to the internet.
C.Locate the room, book it, then scan a QR code to use it.
D.Run on the treadmill, then get a refund automatically.
34.Who would benefit MOST from using a shared gym room?
A.A professional athlete who needs intensive daily training.
B.A person living in an apartment who wants a convenient and private workout.
C.A family looking for a weekend activity to do together.
D.A tourist who wants to take a shower after sightseeing.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce shared gym rooms. B.To praise a technology company.
C.To support the idea of sharing gym rooms. D.To tell the future of shared gym rooms.
【答案】32.D 33.C 34.B 35.A

根据第四段中“Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use.(与使用共享单车类似,用户可以通过智能手机应用程序找到共享健身房,提前预订房间,然后扫描二维码使用。)”
根据第二段“Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.(普通健身房为许多会员同时提供大而开放的空间,而新建的共享健身房是供个人使用的小而独立的房间,通常设置在生活区附近。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.(在自行车和雨伞在中国变得可共享之后,一些公司开始关注健身市场,所以共享健身房在北京的街道上出现了。)”和第二段“Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.(普通健身房为许多会员同时提供大而开放的空间,而新建的共享健身房是供个人使用的小而独立的房间,通常设置在生活区附近。)” 故选A。

On the afternoon of my eighteenth birthday, I was driving my dad’s old car around town, feeling absolutely free and excited. The sun was shining, and everything felt perfect. As I made a turn a bit too quickly, the worst thing happened. There was a loud, sharp sound of metal scraping (刮擦) against metal. My heart jumped into my throat — I had sideswiped a car parked by the pavement.
I stopped the car, my hands shaking on the wheel. I looked around nervously. The street was completely empty; no one had seen the accident. A powerful thought rushed into my head: “Just drive away. No one will ever know.” The car I hit was a beautiful, brand-new car, and the scratch along its door was long and deep. My own car only had a small bump. Panic filled me. I had worked hard to save money for my first semester’s college books, and I knew that money would be wiped out by this repair. The temptation to escape was overwhelming.
But then, I pictured my dad’s serious face. He had always taught me that taking responsibility for your actions was what defined a person. With a heart that felt like a heavy stone, I pulled over behind the car. I found a notebook and a pen in my backpack. My hands were trembling so much that the writing was messy. I wrote down my name, my phone number, my address, and a short apology. I tore out the page, walked back to the car, and carefully put the note under its windshield wiper. Driving home, I was consumed with fear already imagining the angry phone call and the financial trouble that would follow me to college.
The call came that evening. A woman’s voice, calm and steady, asked for me. “This is Mrs. Gable,” she said. “I’m calling about the note you left on my car.” I prepared for the worst and apologized in a rushed, nervous stream. She listened quietly until I finished. “The scratch on my car is quite noticeable,” she said, pausing. My stomach tightened into a knot, sure she was about to demand a huge payment. Then she added, her voice warming, “But so is your honesty.”

That night, I told my dad everything.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

D
