How Running Changed My Life
(新语境)Running has truly changed my life, but I never understood running as a form of exercise.
During the first two weeks this year, my grandmother passed away and I started to ____1____ my job because of office politics. My life felt stuck. So I decided to run. It was my natural ____2____. I just wanted to get away. I started running — by the time I came back, I felt tired and energised at the same time. I knew I was on to something.
Once in a while, I would get excited about running. However, I always picked up running for the ____3____ reasons. I used running as a reason to buy new fashionable sports clothes. Or I decided to run to lose weight or become healthier. My running never lasted longer than 2–3 weeks. I would lose interest in running. I just didn’t understand it. Why would anyone go through the ____4____ of running? Especially when the weather is bad. Who does that? I’d rather go to the gym with my friends, talk, and pick up some weights.
But I found that pain is ____5____ the reason I started to run again. When my life was not what I wanted it to be, I was upset. I decided to run when I arrived home one day after work. It was a cold January day, and I only ran for 3 miles in a time that I am too ___6___ to mention. But my time is not what’s important — during that run I finally got it.
My stamina (耐力) was nearly the same as my life at the time — it was bad, but I knew it would be better if I ____7____ running. If I would fight against the wind, rain, cold, and my thoughts of ____8____, I would eventually improve my stamina and be a better runner. My life has improved at the same rate that my running pace and stamina has improved. But running has the most ____9____ on my productivity, mood, creativity, and overall livelihood.
Every time life became difficult I would give up. Now, when life is difficult, my response is ____10____ — I love the pain and struggle instead of shying away from it. My life is moving forward and I’m doing well in my job again. I owe this to running.
And the best thing about running is that it is easy to start. You just go. You decide when, where, and how fast.

(新语境)When I arrived at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man took one look at my hesitant posture and held up some fingers. One? Two? I put up one finger, and he directed me to the Level 1 class. It was disorienting: Class time was strictly “voices off” to encourage immersive learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.
Learning ASL in the early weeks was a culture shock and a bruise to my ego. As a writer, I pride myself on a certain facility with language. I was taught that there’s a perfect combination of words that can most precisely communicate any thought. With ASL, I expected to feel similarly, and thought fluency would come once I collected a critical mass of signs. The first thing you learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I asked and answered questions using words we didn’t have the signs for, those early weeks were filled with laborious spelling. It was embarrassing: Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words— often multiple times— was its own kind of torture.
Over time, I picked up on new conventions, like waving a hand or stomping on the ground to get someone’s attention. My fingers stalled as they reached for new shapes, and I struggled to differentiate very similar looking signs. Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措词) is not as important as the way you embody what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word “desperate”. “ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,” he told me. “If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the appropriate facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look at all frustrated,” he added — it’s like speaking in a deadpan monotone while claiming you’re angry.
I’ve been attending ASL classes for almost two years. Initially, my reason was trivial: a childhood fascination with “secret languages”. While ASL may not wholly share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision. Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.
24. How did the author feel in the first ASL class?
A. Frustrated. B. Confused. C. Anxious. D. Hesitant.
25 What made the author embarrassed when learning the alphabet?
A. Putting on smiling facial expressions. B. Being made fun of in front of the class.
C. Waving a hand to get someone’s attention. D. Misspelling and respelling words repeatedly.
26. According to the passage, what can we learn about ASL?
A. It’s a universal language system across cultures. B. It conveys more emotions than verbal language.
C. It requires a combination of signs and emotions. D. It has a direct translation of signs for every word.
27. What has the author learned from her learning experience?
A. The body is what gives language life. B. Diction is what gives language flavour.
C. Fluency comes from the mastery of signs. D. ASL prioritizes precision over communication.

(新热点)Extreme weather events, such as tornadoes, can cause widespread damage to forests, leading to environmental and financial losses. When trees fall during these storms, ecosystems might be influenced, increasing forest management costs. As climate change worsens, severe storms are expected to become more frequent, making it important to understand how forests respond to wind stress.
While previous studies have explored how trees react to wind, it is unclear whether these responses remain the same across different forest configurations. With this aim, a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Kana Kamimura, tested how trees move under various forest arrangements and weather conditions, including how trees withstand wind.
The research aims to explain how winds directly impact trees and how trees reduce the stress from wind to survive. To achieve this, researchers set up two experimental areas of cedar trees, in November 2017. In the first plot, P-100 was made up of 3,000 trees per hectare, creating a thick forest. In the second plot, P-50, half of the trees were removed for this research, leaving 1,500 trees per hectare. Over two years, the team watched 24 trees in the dense (密集的) area and 12 in the thinned area, using tools to track the range of trees movement during various wind conditions. The tracking period included many typhoons, such as Typhoon Trami, in 2018, which caused significant damage to the thinned plot.
The researchers found that cedar trees show two completely different swaying patterns depending on wind speed. In light winds, the trees swayed at around 2 to 2.3 cycles per second, with their branches taking in much of the wind energy, protecting the trunks and roots from wind stress. However, at higher wind speeds, the trees changed to a slower swaying pattern of 0.2 to 0.5 cycles per second. In this case, the whole tree swayed together, changing force across the trunk and roots, increasing the probability of breakage or uprooting.
Interestingly, the change between these two swaying patterns occurred at different wind speeds, depending on the forest density. In the dense area, the trees switched patterns at wind speeds between 1.79 and 7.44 meters per second. In contrast, in the thinned plot, the change occurred at slightly lower wind speeds, ranging from 1.57 to 5.63 meters per second.
This study offers valuable understanding for balancing thinning with wind resistance in forest management to support long-lasting forestry practices, and help forests go through extreme climate changes.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The results of the previous studies. B. The practical reasons for the research.
C. The potential effects of extreme weather. D. The challenges brought by climate changes.
29. What does the underlined word “configurations” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Areas. B. Sizes. C. Types. D. Layouts.
30. What can we infer from the study conducted by the researchers?
A. The trees tend to sway more violently as the wind becomes stronger.
B. The branches of trees took in most of the wind energy in strong wind.
C. Planting trees in a thinned pattern can help protect trees from storms.
D. Trees in thinned plots change their swaying pattern in lighter winds.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To call on people to plant more trees in thinned area.
B. To raise people’s awareness of environment protection.
C. To offer ideas for a more reasonable forest management.
D. To compare the different swaying patterns of trees in storms.
D
(新话题)“If you can in one day renew yourself, do so everyday”, declared Shang Dynasty founder Cheng Tang. This is a nice motto to live by, and certainly more romantic than American poet Ezra Pound’s “Make it New”, a catchphrase of the modernist movement.
Most of us tend to fight change and seek stability, yet as French philosopher Henry Bergson notes, “life is endlessly continued creation.” We notice change only when it’s sudden and final, like when we change careers, or sell our forever home. But Bergson argues that change is everlasting, not just in these moments. Our past follows us at every instant and leans over the present, and the direction it takes is “new, unique, and unforeseen”.
It is a comforting thought that we press upon our future at every moment in totally novel ways. But it also helps explain the quiet sadness we feel when life is going well, just like trying to hold onto sand falling through one’s fingers. Bergson didn’t like “clock time” — the mechanical ticking of seconds. He preferred “duration”, where time flows continuously, rather than a series of separated moments. We are the dancer who moves through time, making it up as she goes along.
Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus acknowledged that the only unchanging force in life is change. Driving this process of change is the tension of opposites such as life and death, day and night, wet and dry. Struggle and disagreement are important to the creation of new things; creativity arises from the dynamic interplay of opposing forces.
Similarly, the Taijim (Yin-Yang symbol) represents such interplay. Yin is connected with qualities like darkness, the moon, and the earth. Yang is connected with qualities such as light, the sun, and heaven. The combined pattern indicates that they are interdependent, out of which arises a stable balance.
Like most crossroads in life — “Should I put my money in a high- risk investment or play it safe?”, or “Should I settle down or keep exploring?” — the internal struggle is full of tension. But it's this tension that brings about new ideas, new plans, new destiny.
Pound’s cry to “Make it New” is happening to us whether we like it or not. We have no choice but to ride along this current of never-ending newness. As Alan Watts says, “The only way to make sense out of change is to dive into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
32. According to the passage, Henri Bergson believes ________.
A. change in life comes from major events
B. time is best understood as a series of fixed points
C. our past shapes the present and future unpredictably
D. “clock time” can explain the interplay of opposing forces
33. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Tension of opposites generates creativity. B. True existence lies in stability and control.
C. “Make it new” promotes seeking a new lifestyle. D. The independence of Yin and Yang leads to balance.
34. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Striking a Balance: Flowing with the Present
B. The Current of Newness: Fighting Opposing Forces
C. The Dance of Change: Welcoming Daily Renewal
D. Enlightening the Future: Returning to Ancient Wisdom

How Smartphone Adds to Your Weight
(新话题)Using a smartphone at mealtimes can lead to an expanding waistline. Researchers have found that men and women consumed 15% more calories when looking at their phones while eating. ____35____ The groundbreaking study suggests that staring at a phone screen may distract (分心) dinners from how much food and what they are actually eating.
“It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food ingested,” said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone.
The volunteers, aged 18 to 28, were divided in to three groups and invited to help themselves to a choice of food — ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolate — until they were satisfied. ____36____ On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 when using a mobile. Those in the sample who were classed as overweight ate 616 calories while using their phones. When in possession of their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. ____37____
“Smartphone use during a meal increased calorie and fat intake,” said Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa, a lead author of the study — carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. He added: “Tablets and smartphones have become the main ‘distracters’ during meals, even early in childhood. ____38____A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food accepted.”____39____ A more detailed analysis can be found in the journal.
A. They also eat more fatty food.
B. They also ate more when reading a magazine.
C. Distracted or hurried eating can add to weight gain.
D. The study is published in Physiology And Behavior.
E. It is important to pay attention to how this may impact food intakes.
F. Hunger isn’t the only thing that influences how much we eat during the day.
G. They were recorded eating with no distractions, using a smartphone or reading a magazine.

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Traci Ruble, a psychotherapist (心理治疗师), felt worried that people today were experiencing loneliness and a shortage of personal connections. She understood that with busy lives and challenging jobs, people were unable to make these connections.
So on a spring day in 2015, Ruble and a small number of volunteers set up chairs on sidewalks in 12 locations around San Francisco, California and invited people passing by to sit for a few minutes and chat. This was the beginning of Sidewalk Talk, an organization whose mission is to create public spaces of connections where the people are.
Today, the organization has more than 4,000 volunteers in 40 cities. Around 25 percent of the volunteers are licensed therapists (持证治疗师).They come from different backgrounds and are a mixed group. Volunteers receive training from the organization.
Listening activities are held several times a month along with other organizations. In San Francisco, Sidewalk Talk partners with Lava Mae, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that brings mobile showers to homeless people.
Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to speak and be listened to but it is not therapy, according to Ruble. “I’m not interacting as a therapist out there. I’m not there to solve someone’s problems,” she said. “I’m there to practice being human.”
Ruble stressed that therapy is one-sided and that therapists are taught to avoid self-disclosure (自我表露) but by “being human” she could carry out interactions by sharing her own life and showing empathy (同感) with the people she talks with.
According to a report, 31 percent of all Americans experience serious loneliness, including 61 percent of young adults. To fix that, rebuilding community relationships is very important. While listening activities will not solve the loneliness problem, these chats could help someone have a brighter day. Knowing that there are empathetic people who are willing to fully listen and share your feelings could make all the difference to a lonely person.
40. What is Traci Ruble’s worry about people nowadays?
_______________________________________________________________________
41. Why was Sidewalk Talk set up?
_______________________________________________________________________
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
In Ruble’s opinion, Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to talk with therapists who can give them special treatment and solve their problems.
_______________________________________________________________________
43. In addition to rebuilding community relationships, what do you think are some other ways to solve the loneliness problem? (About 40 words)

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在纽约曼哈顿的手语中心学习美国手语的经历,以及在这个过程中对语言和沟通方式的新认识。
24.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“It was disorienting: Class time was strictly ‘voices off’ to encourage immersive learning and to show respect to the deaf teachers. Without the power of speech, all my classmates and I could do was smile and nod at one another as we took in the new vocabulary.(这让人感到困惑:课堂时间严格要求“禁止说话”,以鼓励沉浸式学习并尊重聋人教师。没有说话的能力,我的同学们和我所能做的只是微笑和点头,同时吸收新词汇)”可知,作者在第一堂课上感到困惑。故选B项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“It was embarrassing: Seeing a dozen politely smiling faces watching me as I slowly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling words— often multiple times— was its own kind of torture.(这很尴尬:看到十几张礼貌地微笑的脸看着我,我慢慢地拼写、拼错并重新拼写单词——通常多次——这本身就是一种折磨)”可知,作者在学习字母表时,因为反复拼错和重新拼写单词而感到尴尬。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Eventually I realized that when you’re communicating in sign language, diction (措词) is not as important as the way you embody what you’re communicating. I once asked a teacher how to sign the word ‘desperate’. ‘ASL doesn’t have a direct translation of every English word,’ he told me. ‘If you want to sign ‘desperate’, you might just sign the word ‘want’, but with the appropriate facial and body posturing to show your desperation. It doesn’t make sense to sign ‘frustrated’ if your face doesn’t look at all frustrated,’ he added— it’s like speaking in a deadpan monotone while claiming you’re angry.(最终我意识到,当你用手语交流时,措词不如你如何体现你所传达的内容重要。
根据最后一段中的“While ASL may not wholly share a vocabulary with English, that doesn’t mean it lacks precision. Its precision, I’ve learned, lies in the common language of the body.(尽管ASL可能并不完全与英语共享词汇,但这并不意味着它缺乏精确性。我学到的是,它的精确性在于肢体语言)”可知,作者从学习经历中学到的是,肢体语言在手语中很重要,即身体是赋予语言生命的。故选A项。
C
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. D 31. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了因极端天气频发,研究人员测试不同森林布局和天气下树木的反应,发现其摇曳模式随风速和密度变化,为森林管理提供参考。
28.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Extreme weather events, such as tornadoes, can cause widespread damage to forests, leading to environmental and financial losses. When trees fall during these storms, ecosystems might be influenced, increasing forest management costs. As climate change worsens, severe storms are expected to become more frequent, making it important to understand how forests respond to wind stress.(极端天气事件,比如龙卷风,可能会对森林造成大面积破坏,从而导致环境和经济方面的损失。在这些风暴中树木倒塌时,生态系统可能会受到影响,进而增加森林管理的成本。随着气候变化的加剧,预计强风暴将会变得更加频繁,因此了解森林如何应对风力压力变得尤为重要)”可知,第一段主要说明了开展相关研究的现实原因,故选B。
29.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“With this aim, a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Kana Kamimura, tested how trees move under various forest arrangements and weather conditions, including how trees withstand wind.(为此,由副教授金木川领导的一组研究人员进行了相关测试,他们考察了树木在各种森林布局和天气条件下(包括树木如何抵御风力)的移动情况)”可知,先前研究探索了树木对风的反应,但不清楚这些反应在不同森林布局中是否相同”。故“configurations”指森林的布局、结构,即“layouts”。故划线词意思是“布局”。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据第五段“Interestingly, the change between these two swaying patterns occurred at different wind speeds, depending on the forest density. In the dense area, the trees switched patterns at wind speeds between 1.79 and 7.44 meters per second. In contrast, in the thinned plot, the change occurred at slightly lower wind speeds, ranging from 1.57 to 5.63 meters per second.( 有趣的是,这两种摇摆模式之间的转变发生在不同的风速下,且取决于森林的密度。在茂密的区域,树木在风速介于1.79米/秒至7.44米/秒之间时会改变模式。相比之下,在疏伐过的区域,这种转变发生在稍低的风速下,范围在1.57米/秒至5.63米/秒之间)”可知,在疏伐后的林地中,树木在微风中摆动的模式会发生变化。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“This study offers valuable understanding for balancing thinning with wind resistance in forest management to support long-lasting forestry practices, and help forests go through extreme climate changes.(这项研究为在森林管理中平衡树木的稀疏生长与抵御风力提供了宝贵的见解,有助于支持长期的林业实践,并帮助森林应对极端气候变化)”可知,文章最后一段明确指出,该研究为平衡森林疏伐与抗风性提供了见解,有助于更合理的森林管理和长期林业实践。因此,主要目的是为森林管理提供思路,故选C。

34.主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“If you can in one day renew yourself, do so everyday(如果你能在一天内更新自己,那么每天都这样做)”和最后一段“Pound’s cry to “Make it New” is happening to us whether we like it or not. We have no choice but to ride along this current of never-ending newness. As Alan Watts says, “The only way to make sense out of change is to dive into it, move with it, and join the dance.”(不管我们喜欢与否,Pound所呼吁的“创新”正在发生在我们身上。
【答案】35. A 36. G 37. B 38. E 39. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍用餐期间使用手机会使人们分心,让大脑无法正确判断摄取的食物量,从而导致人们摄入更多的卡路里,增加体重。
35.由上一句“Researchers have found that men and women consumed 15% more calories when looking at their phones while eating.”可知,研究者已经发现男人和女人吃饭的时候看着手机,会摄入15%更多的卡路里。选项A“They also eat more fatty food.”表示的是他们也吃更多的油腻食物,they指代的是上一句“men and women”,eat和上一句的“consumed”相呼应,more fatty food和上一句的“15% more calories”相呼应,选项A符合语境。故选A。
36. 由后一句“On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 when using a mobile.”可知,平均下来,没有使用手机分心的志愿者摄入535卡路里,单数当使用手机的时候,摄入591卡路里。选项G“They were recorded eating with no distractions, using a smartphone or reading a magazine.”表示的是他们被按照没有分散物,使用手机或者读杂志进行记录食物摄入情况,“no distractions”和后一句的“without the distraction of a smartphone”相呼应,“using a smartphone”和后一句的“when using a mobile”相呼应,选项G符合语境。故选G。
37. 由前一句“When in possession of their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods.”可知,当专有他们的手机时候,这些志愿者也会摄入10%更多的油腻食物。选项B“They also ate more when reading a magazine.”表示的是当读杂志的时候,他们也会吃的更多。They指代的前一句“the volunteers”,also ate more和前一句的“also consumed 10 percent more”相呼应,when reading a magazine和前一句的“When in possession of their mobiles”结构相呼应,选项B符合语境。故选B。
38. 由后一句“A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food accepted. ”可知,一个干扰物会阻止大脑正确地理解所摄取的食物数量。表示的是干扰物为什么会让人摄取更多食物。选项E“It is important to pay attention to how this may impact food intakes.”表示的是:关注这个干扰物可能是如何地影响食物摄取是非常重要的,由此可见,后一句是对选项E的解释说明。故选E。
39. 由后一句“A more detailed analysis can be found in the journal.”可知,一个更详细的分析可以在该杂志看到。选项D“The study is published in Physiology And Behavior.”表示的是这个研究在《生理学与行为》杂志上发表。后一句中的“the journal”指代的是选项D中的“Physiology And Behavior”。后一句的“can be found”和选项D中的“is published”相呼应,后一句的“A more detailed analysis”是对选项D中的“The study”具体说明,选项D符合语境。故选D。
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
_______________________________________________________________________
【答案】40. People were experiencing loneliness and a shortage of personal connections.
41. To create public spaces of connections where the people gather.
42. In Ruble’s opinion, Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to talk with therapists who can give them special treatment and solve their problems.
The reason is that while Sidewalk Talk may give people a chance to talk, Ruble says it is not therapy and she is not there to solve someone’s problems. Volunteers are there to practice being human and to listen and empathize with those they talk with, not to provide special treatment.
43. To solve the loneliness problem, we can establish more social groups and activities to encourage people to interact and communicate with each other. This can help people feel more connected and reduce their sense of isolation.
【解析】

She understood that with busy lives and challenging jobs, people were unable to make these connections.(心理治疗师Traci Ruble担心,今天的人们正在感到孤独,缺乏人际关系。她明白,忙碌的生活和富有挑战性的工作,人们无法建立这些联系)”可知,Traci Ruble担心如今的人感到孤独,缺乏人际关系。故答案为People were experiencing loneliness and a shortage of personal connections.
41. 考查细节理解。根据文章第一段“Traci Ruble, a psychotherapist(心理治疗师), felt worried that people today were experiencing loneliness and a shortage of personal connections. She understood that with busy lives and challenging jobs, people were unable to make these connections.(心理治疗师Traci Ruble担心,今天的人们正在感到孤独,缺乏人际关系。她明白,忙碌的生活和富有挑战性的工作,人们无法建立这些联系。)”可知,现在的人们正在感到孤独,缺乏人际关系,忙碌的生活和富有挑战性的工作让人们无法建立这些联系。再根据文章第二段“So on a spring day in 2015, Ruble and a small number of volunteers set up chairs on sidewalks in 12 locations around San Francisco, California and invited people passing by to sit for a few minutes and chat. This was the beginning of Sidewalk Talk, an organization whose mission is to create public spaces of connections where the people are.(因此,在2015年春天的一天,Ruble和少数志愿者在加利福尼亚州旧金山周围的12个地点的人行道上放置了椅子,并邀请路过的人坐下来聊几分钟。这就是“Sidewalk Talk”的开始,这个组织的使命是在人们聚集的地方创造公共空间)”,可知,Sidewalk Talk的开创是为了创造公共空间,供人们聊天,从而解决人们感到孤独、缺乏人际关系的问题。故答案为To create public spaces of connections where the people gather.
42. 考查细节理解。根据文章第五段“Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to speak and be listened to but it is not therapy, according to Ruble. “I’m not interacting as a therapist out there. (Ruble强调,治疗是片面的,治疗师被教导要避免自我表露,但通过“同为人”,她可以通过分享自己的生活和对她谈话的人表现出同情来进行互动。)”可知,在Ruble看来,Sidewalk Talk是为人们提供了一个机会让人们可以说话和被倾听,是一种互动而不是去解决问题。故答案为In Ruble’s opinion, Sidewalk Talk gives people a chance to talk with therapists who can give them special treatment and solve their problems. The reason is that while Sidewalk Talk may give people a chance to talk, Ruble says it is not therapy and she is not there to solve someone’s problems. Volunteers are there to practice being human and to listen and empathize with those they talk with, not to provide special treatment.
43. 开放题。要求考生谈谈如何解决孤独问题,考生言之有理即可。参考答案为To solve the loneliness problem, we can establish more social groups and activities to encourage people to interact and communicate with each other. This can help people feel more connected and reduce their sense of isolation.

B

33. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Tension of opposites generates creativity. B. True existence lies in stability and control.

Knowing that there are empathetic people who are willing to fully listen and share your feelings could make all the difference to a lonely person.

and 12 in the thinned area, using tools to track the range of trees movement during various wind conditions. The
tracking period included many typhoons, such as Typhoon Trami,in 2018,which caused significant damage to the
thinned plot.
The researchers found that cedar trees show two completely different swaying patterns depending on wind speed.
In light winds, the trees swayed at around 2 to 2.3 cycles per second, with their branches taking in much of the wind
energy, protecting the trunks and roots from wind stress. However,at higher wind speeds, the trees changed to a slower
swaying pattern of 0.2 to 0.5 cycles per second. In this case, the whole tree swayed together, changing force across the
trunk and roots, increasing the probability of breakage or uprooting.
Interestingly, the change between these two sway ing patterns occurred at different wind speeds, depending on the
forest density. In the dense area, the trees switched pattems at wind speeds between 1.79 and 7.44 meters per second.
In contrast,in the thinned plot, the change occurred at slightly lower wind speeds, ranging from 1.57 to 5.63 meters
per second.
This study offers valuable understanding for balancing thinning with wind resistance in forest management to
support long-lasting forestry practices, and help forests go through extreme climate changes.
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The results of the previous studies.
B.The practical reasons for the research.
C.The potential effects of extreme weather.
D.The challenges brought by climate changes
29.What does the underlined wordconfigurations"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Areas.
B.Sizes.
C.Types.
D.Layouts.
30.What can we infer from the study conducted by the researchers?
A.The trees tend to sway more violently as the wind becomes stronger.
B.The branches of trees took in most of the wind energy in strong wind.
C.Planting trees in a thinned pattern can help protect trees from storms
D.Trees in thinned plots change their swaying pattern in lighter winds.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To call on people to plant more trees in thinned area.
B.To raise people's awareness of environment protection.
C.To offer ideas for a more reasonable forest management.
D.To compare the different swaying patterns of trees in storms.

This is a nice motto to live by,and certainly more romantic than American poet Ezra Pound's "Make it New",a
catchphrase of the modernist movement.
Most of us tend to fight change and seek stability, yet as French philosopher Henry Bergson notes,"life is
endlessly continued creation."We notice change only when it's sudden and final, like when we change careers,or sell
our forever home. But Bergson argues that change is everlasting, not just in these moments. Our past follows us at
every instant and leans over the present, and the direction it takes is "new, unique, and unforeseen'.
It is a comforting thought that we press upon our future at every moment in totally novel ways. But it also helps
explain the quiet sadness we feel when life is going well, just like trying to hold onto sand falling through one's fingers.
Bergson didn't like "clock time"-the mechanical ticking of seconds. He preferred "duration",where time flows
continuously, rather than a series of separated moments. We are the dancer who moves through time, making it up as
she goes along
Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus acknowledged that the only unchanging force in life is change.Driving
this process of change is the tension of opposites such as life and death, day and night, wet and dry.Struggle and
disagreement are important to the creation of new things;creativity arises from the dynamic interplay of opposing
forces.
Similarly, the Taijim (Yin-Yang symbol)represents such interplay.Yin is connected with qualities like darkness,
the moon, and the earth.Yang is connected with qualities such as light, the sun,and heaven. The combined pattern
indicates that they are interdependent, out of which arises a stable balance.
Like most crossroads in life-"Should I put my money in a high-risk investment or play it safe?",or"Should I
settle down or keep exploring?"-the internal struggle is full of tension. But it's this tension that brings about new
ideas,new plans,new destiny
Pound's cry to"Make it New"is happening to us whether we like it or not.We have no choice but to ride along

第二节(20分)
Dear Tom,
I am glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are going to come to China, I am excited. I would like to tell you some Chinese customs.
Firstly, you’d better arrive a few minutes early. The moment you meet with your Chinese friend and his/her family, you should say “Ni hao” to them. Secondly, it’s important for you to buy an appropriate gift for your friend’s family. I am sure that receiving your gift will make them delighted. Thirdly, knowing table manners can help you behave decently. For example, chopsticks and spoons are usually used when you are eating in China. Then, you are not supposed to make a noise while eating the soup. Finally, remember to thank the host for the delicious food he/she has offered, which will surely make him/her happy.
I wish you enjoy yourself in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
