Members of Generation Alpha, often known as Gen Alpha for short, are kids aged 8 to 14. They are introducing their parents to a whole new world. These children are influencing their families in great ways, leading parents that used to stick to old habits to try new hobbies or goods.
In July, public relations company DKC made a report on parents of this generation, which stressed the very trend (趋势,潮流). According to the report, many parents are now welcoming new experiences based on their children’s suggestions.
How Gen Alpha Kids Are Driving New Trends
The report calls Gen Alpha “technology-aware” and “culture-shaping” — two traits (特征) that make these kids natural trendsetters for their families. It explains that kids in this age group aren’t just following trends themselves; they’re actively encouraging their parents to step out and try new things. For example, 66% of parents say they’ve tried different foods on the advice of a Gen Alpha kid. And 40% of the parents surveyed say they’ve signed up for a subscription (订阅) service at their kid’s suggestion. (Find more examples from the survey in the bar graph below.)
DKC GEN ALPHA REPORT 2025
The Economic (经济的) Influence of Young Voices
The numbers show that kids are having a great economic influence. Members of Gen Alpha may not be old enough for part-time jobs or make some money in other ways on their own, but their young voices carry weight when it comes to family spending. “It’s not just thinking about what an 8 to 14-year-old is going to buy or ask their parents to buy for them,” DKC president Matthew Traub said. “It’s how they’re influencing the whole family’s spending decisions.”
1. What is the DKC’s report mainly about?
A. The popular hobbies of Gen Alpha kids.
B. The work that the DKC company has done.
C. The secret behind the name “Gen Alpha”.
D. The effects that Gen Alpha kids have on parents.
2. In which of the following do Gen Alpha kids have the strongest influence?
A. Trying different foods. B. Watching different sports.
C. Buying goods during sales. D. Using new beauty things.
3. How do Gen Alpha kids influence economy?
A. They bring about new jobs. B. They spend a lot on themselves.

St. Bernard Parish firefighter Nixon was driving home with his wife after a celebration when he noticed some smoke near the Mississippi state line. As he got closer, he saw a car that had crashed into a large truck — its body was twisted, and the tyres (轮胎) were already burning. It seemed all resulted from the turn the car driver had suddenly made. The car was soon catching fire, and Nixon knew someone might be trapped inside.
Quickly, he pulled over and rushed toward the burning car. First, he knocked at the driver’s window, calling out to check if the driver was okay and if anyone else was in the car, but there was no answer. His heart raced a little with fear, but he pushed the feeling aside; he circled to the right passenger side, his attention fixed only on getting the person out.
By then, the fire had spread to the car’s inside, and thick smoke rose. Nixon used his hands to try breaking the windshield (挡风玻璃). When the windshield finally broke, he reached in, held the driver who had passed out, lifted her up, and pushed her out through the broken opening. Just as he got out of the car safely, the car was totally on fire.
Moments later firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District arrived, but the car was already burned down. The woman was rushed to a New Orleans hospital. Nixon’s hands were treated for the cuts made when he broke the windshield, but he said the experience felt deeply meaningful: “Saving her life made all the pain worth it,” he noted, adding that the act of rescuing her had lifted his spirits in an unexpected way.
4. What probably caused the accident?
A. The car driver lost control due to heavy smoke.
B. The car driver made a sudden change in direction.
C. The large truck stopped unexpectedly on the road.
D. The car’s tyres broke before reaching the state line.
5. What happened in the rescue process?
A. The car driver came back to life in time.
B. The truck driver called for help immediately.
C. Nixon got injured when breaking the windshield.
D. Local firefighters arrived soon and put out the fire.
6. Which words can best describe Nixon?
A. Outgoing and polite. B. Humorous and careful. C. Patient and creative. D. Brave and responsible.
7. What message does the text deliver?
A. Car accidents are common near state lines.
B. Firefighters should always put others’ safety first.
C. Helping others can bring a strong sense of satisfaction.
D. Timely medical treatment is key to survivors of accidents.

To visitors, Venice is a beautiful picture of historic buildings, waterways, bell towers, red roofs and a large winged lion, the symbol of the city, standing on the buildings across the city. Possibly the most famous lion is a bronze statue (青铜雕像) in the Piazzetta near St. Mark’s Square, and now, researchers think the statue was made in China.
After studying samples (样品) from the lion statue using lead isotope (铅同位素) tests, researchers from northern Italy’s University of Padua found that the bronze used to create the statue came from the Yangtze River in China, according to a study published in the journal Antiquity.
This, they said, would explain why the 4-meter-long and 2.2-meter-high statue had a strange style. People once thought it was made locally, in Syria or Anatolia. According to the researchers, although it was placed near St. Mark’s Square in the 13th century, the lion looks more like Chinese art from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) than works from medieval Mediterranean Europe. They point to the shape of the lion and marks left by removing its old horns (角).
“It is possible that Marco Polo’s father and uncle, during the four years they spent at the palace of Kublai Khan on their first journey, bought the lion statue,” the researchers said, adding that the visit probably took place between 1264 and 1268.
The animal was actually a zhenmushou — a big, fierce, lion-like tomb guard from the Tang Dynasty. Once the Polos sent the statue back to Italy after their visit to Mongol, it was probably changed to look like the symbol of St. Mark. Workers took off its horns and added a “wig”
“As there is a dearth of written information, why and how the lion was moved to Venice is still unclear. But we can now consider it as a symbol of how connected the medieval world was,” the researchers added.
8. What did the researchers find about the bronze lion statue?
A. It copied a traditional Chinese art form.
B. Its bronze has something to do with China.
C. Its horns were removed before it was sent to Venice.
D. It was actually a stone guard used in Kublai Khan’s palace.
9. Why were the horns of the statue removed possibly?
A. To follow the local law.
B. To ship the statue more easily.
C. To match the taste of the Polos’.
D. To make the statue go with another symbol.
10. What does the underlined word “dearth” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Balance. B. Influence. C. Absence. D. Wealth.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The way of making a lion statue.
B. The journey of Marco Polo and his family.
C. The different styles of lion statues in Venice.
D. The true birthplace of the famous Venice lion statue.

A Sprague’s pipit — a kind of songbird that shows if the grasslands are healthy — was mad at an enemy’s call and dived down to fight, only to find a plastic decoy (诱饵) tied to a loudspeaker. Caught in a net, it became part of Boyce’s study on songbird migration (迁徙).
For years, tiny songbirds like Sprague’s pipits have had secret migration routes (路线). Their small size and changing routes made them hard to track again. But small radio-frequency rings changed this, leading to the creation of the Motus network: a line of towers from Canada to Argentina. These towers pick up signals (信号) from the rings on birds, and give information on where they fly, when, and how fast, making GPS no longer necessary.
Researchers noted its size, put a Motus ring on it and freed the pipit. Philip Taylor created the network, which started in 2010 with towers at Ontario’s Long Point Bird Observatory. Quickly, it spread across Canada, Central America, and later the U.S. By 2015, it tracked birds across the world, uncovering new routes for other types of birds like Swainson’s thrushes and Arctic shorebirds. Today, over 55,000 animals have rings, using 2,200 stations in 34 countries. Researchers build and care for the 6-to 11-meter towers, working with landowners and governments. Even with problems like lightning or cows damaging towers, the network grows.
Motus makes it easy for researchers to share collected information. It’s cheaper than satellite tracking, a great tool for studying migrating animals. Boyce’s team used it to track Sprague’s pipits from Central America to southern Canada.
Of course, the network faces problems, like when researchers have trouble getting enough money or change projects. But with more global teamwork, more funding, and better technology for towers and rings, the Motus network will get past its present troubles and play a big part in helping learn how animals migrate in the future.
12. What once made it hard to retrack Sprague’s pipits?
A. The difficulty in telling them from other birds.
B. Their migration routes that were not fixed.
C. The long journeys they traveled.
D. Their cleverness in avoiding traps.
13. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The rapid development of Motus. B. The great effort to protect pipits.
C. The process of studying pipits. D. The reason for creating Motus.
14. What makes the Motus network different from satellite tracking?
A. It is more affordable.
B. It can track more kinds of animals.
C. It provides exact GPS information.
D. It is not limited by weather conditions.
15. How does the author feel about the future of Motus?
A. Curious. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.

It was near midnight as I waited for my mother to arrive home. She was a nurse and took a late shift (轮班) that day. It was my habit to wait up for her to come home when I was a small child.
This night, I didn’t wait alone. I had man’s best friend right by my side. Its name was Benji. It was just honored to be allowed inside on such a cold night. This didn’t happen often, so it enjoyed every minute of it.
Finally, we heard the sound of Mum’s car. Of course, Benji’s keen ears sent it running to the door before me. We stood at the door excitedly watching as Mum collected her bag to come inside. As soon as she got in, Mum went into the kitchen and put some eggs on to boil (煮). With the fire still on, she came out to take a bath. Since my “night watch” was over, I felt relaxed enough to call it a night.
I headed back to my room and got in bed. Benji was still walking around the house. I knew it would come into my room to spend the night once it finished its patrol (巡逻). After all, my room was the warmest room in the house, and Benji was free to enter and exit at any time because my door was broken and it could open the door with a push of its nose.
As it was very late, I fell asleep quickly. Suddenly, I felt Benji’s wet nose moving back and forth on my hand. I opened my eyes and found Benji looking at me nervously. Then it rushed out of the door. I went back to sleep, thinking that it needed to be let outside before it made a mess in the house.

Moments later, firefighters from St.

A. Curious. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But soon Benji rushed into my room and woke me up again.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I jumped to my feet and followed Benji to the kitchen
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
But soon Benji rushed into my room and woke me up again. It pulled my quilt with its mouth, making soft anxious noises. Its paws tapped the floor quickly, eyes staring straight at the kitchen door. I was still half-asleep, but its unusual restlessness made me sit up. The house was quiet except for Benji’s heavy breathing—until a faint smell of burning came into my nose. I froze, suddenly remembering Mum had put eggs on to boil before her bath, and the broken door that let Benji walk around freely.
I jumped to my feet and followed Benji to the kitchen. Thick smoke was coming out of the pot on the stove. I quickly turned off the fire. Just then, Mum came out of the room, surprised by the smoke. She hugged me tightly, saying she’d forgotten the eggs and fallen asleep. Looking at Benji, who sat proudly by my side, I realized its “patrol” was for us. The broken door that once seemed a trouble had let our loyal friend save the day, showing that love and protection often come from the most unexpected places.
