Earlier, only face-to-face communication was possible, but with the development of technology, we now have the phone, email, video calls and so on. It has become easier and much cheaper to communicate or have a conversation. We can easily communicate with our loved ones, whether they’re close or far away.
Face-to-face communication includes direct personal interaction (互动). Both parties can see each other’s body language and facial expressions, and understand them easily, leading to more effective communication. A study has shown that in our day-to-day life when we interact with someone face to face, we have a nonverbal (非言语的) communication of about 93%. In addition, face-to-face communication is more effective in building trust and making deeper connections.
But considering the long distance and time cost, face-to-face communication may not be the best choice. So there, telephone, email, etc. are preferred. Without telephone conversation, some work may be difficult to get done in time. The conversation changes depending on what relationship you have with the caller. For example, it will be informal (非正式的) if you talk to your close friends or relatives. But if you are having a professional telephone conversation, then it will be formal. You must have a lot of practice and confidence to interact with the caller.
Telephone conversations have no nonverbal cues (暗示), but they offer the convenience of communicating from a distance and at any time. Also, as they cannot see each other, both parties can speak without being under pressure (压力).
So, which do you prefer?

①Do animals communicate with each other? How do they communicate with others? I did some research, and to my surprise, I learnt that all animals communicate. They don’t use language, but they send messages to each other. Animals communicate with each other in three main ways: through sounds, smells, and body language.

Whales are famous for their ability to communicate from far away with special sounds. In their own social groups, whales understand what they’re saying to each other.
③Smell is another popular way for animals to communicate. Some animals, such as the amoeba (变形虫) send out a smell to tell other amoebas it’s going to have babies. Skunks send out an odour when they feel they are in danger.
④Many animals use body language to communicate. Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) touch hands when they meet. A happy dog moves its tail from side to side. Even people understand this form of a dog’s body language.
⑤People develop their own ways of communicating, using words and sentences. But if you watch animals carefully, you quickly come to understand that they also have ways of sending their messages.

Some students give us their advice on how to communicate better.
Susan: If you want to build trust in communication, always be honest with your words. Lies or half-truths can quickly break down the connection between you and the other person. For example, if you promise to do something, make sure you follow through. This way, the person you’re communicating with will feel more comfortable and open up to you.
Jones: If you want to have a more productive conversation, prepare in advance. Before a meeting or discussion, think about the topics that will be covered. If it’s a business talk, research relevant (相关的) data. This preparation allows you to contribute meaningfully, ask intelligent questions, and understand different perspectives better during the communication.
Mandy: If you want to avoid misunderstandings, repeat back what the other person said in your own words. After they finish speaking, briefly summarize their main points. For instance, you can say, “So, what you’re saying is that we should focus on cost-cutting measures, right?” This simple step ensures that you’ve understood their message correctly and gives them a chance to clarify (澄清) if there’s any error.
Would you like to give us more useful advice?
1.According to Susan, what can break down the connection in communication?
A.Being honest all the time. B.Making promises.
C.Telling lies or half-truths. D.Following through on promises.

C.Ignoring relevant data. D.Speaking without thinking.
3.When following Mandy’s advice, what should you do after the other person finishes speaking?

Neighbors are important in our daily lives. Living close to us, they can make our living environment more pleasant if we have a good relationship with them. To achieve this, we need to focus on several key points.
Good communication comes first. When we move to a new neighborhood, we should introduce ourselves. We can knock on neighbors’ doors, smile, and tell them our names and a bit about our lives. This simple act helps us break the ice. Also, we should take part in community events. These events are good chances to get to know our neighbors better and build stronger connections.
Respect is another important point. Everyone has different lifestyles and habits, so we should respect these differences. For example, if a neighbor plays loud music, we shouldn’t get angry immediately. Instead, we should talk to them politely and explain that the noise bothers us. Besides, respecting privacy (隐私) is a must. We shouldn’t look into their yards without permission or listen to their private conversations.
Mutual help matters a lot in neighborhood relationships. If we see a neighbor having trouble carrying heavy things or needing someone to water their plants while they’re away, we should offer to help. This builds a sense of community. In return, when we face problems, we can expect our neighbors to lend a hand. I once had a plumbing (水暖设备) problem, and my neighbor, who is good at fixing such things, helped me solve it right away.
Conflicts (冲突) may happen, but they can be solved peacefully. When disagreements occur, like arguments over parking spaces, we should stay calm and listen to the other side. If we can’t solve the problem by ourselves, we can ask other friendly neighbors or community management for help.
In short, to have good neighborly relations, we need to communicate well, show respect, help each other, and handle conflicts properly.
1.What should we do first when moving to a new neighborhood?
A.Ask neighbors for help. B.Respect neighbors’ privacy.
C.Take part in community events. D.Knock on neighbors’ doors to introduce ourselves.
2.From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A.neighbors with different habits can’t get along well
B.people should always avoid conflicts with neighbors
C.helping neighbors can make the neighborhood more harmonious (和谐的)
D.community management can’t help solve problems in the neighborhood
3.Why does the author mention the experience of the plumbing problem?
A.To show that neighbors all have special skills.
B.To prove that mutual help is important in a community.
C.To explain how to solve problems or disagreements with neighbors.
D.To tell readers that plumbing problems often happen in a community.
重难语篇提升练
When you are in a new place or trying to find your way around, it’s important and necessary to know how to ask for directions. It can help you get to your destination (目的地) faster and avoid getting lost. However, many ESL (以英语为第二语言) learners may find it quite challenging to ask for directions in English. Don’t worry. This passage will help.
The first and most important step is to start the conversation politely. When you ask for directions, the way you make your request can make a difference to the reply you receive. Using polite expressions shows respect for the person you’re asking. This makes him/her more likely (可能的) to help you. If possible, put on a smile.
Once you’ve started the conversation, you’d better ask for directions by using simple sentences. Here are some English expressions for you to ask for directions. Combining (结合) them with a friendly attitude (态度) will increase your chances of receiving helpful directions.
● Could you please tell me the way to the bookshop?
● Excuse me, can you give me directions to this house?
● What’s the best way to reach Donald Street?
When you receive directions, it’s important to make sure that you’ve understood them correctly to avoid getting lost or taking a longer path. You can repeat what the person has said, ask him to repeat certain details (细节) or ask for further explanation (解释). This not only shows that you’ve been listening carefully but also provides a chance to correct any misunderstandings. Here are some expressions to help you, too.
● Let me make sure I understood correctly, I should turn left, is that right?
● Did you say I need to turn left at the central park?
● Would it be possible for you to write down the directions for me?
Finally, when you have the information you need, don’t forget to thank the person for his/her help.
1.What can you do to increase your chances of getting useful information?
① Talk loudly. ② Ask politely. ③ Use simple sentences. ④ Listen as quietly as possible.
A.①② B.②③ C.①④ D.②④
2.What does the underlined (划线的) word “misunderstandings” mean in Chinese?
A.意会 B.理解 C.误解 D.明白
3.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Steps for proper use of polite expressions. B.Reasons for improving your English.
C.Ways to ask for directions in English. D.Advice to make a conversation.
①For years, scientists have known how to measure (衡量) the intelligence (智力) of a person. Recently they began to do research into group intelligence. Early research shows that group intelligence is not the total of the intelligence of the persons in it. So what is the secret of a group’s success?
②Researchers at a research company and a university have both dealt with this question. They believe they finally have a handle on what makes some work teams successful. In the study of the company, researchers collected information and studied it to find patterns (模式). Are members of effective (有效的) groups friends outside of work? Do members with similar personalities work together best? They discussed many opinions, but found no patterns to support them. In fact, who was in the team did not make a difference. Instead, the difference between more effective teams and less effective teams was in the interaction (互动) among the members. The university group collected information by using digital badges (数字徽章) that people agreed to wear. They provided much information, including how long people spoke, where they were looking during communication, and their body language.
③Not only the research company but also the university group found that the key to an effective team was how members communicated with each other.
④Among the findings, the most important is that, in effective teams, members spoke for almost the same amount (数量) of time—not at every meeting or communication, but the whole course of a project. The second one was that members showed an understanding of how it might feel to walk in somebody else’s shoes. A high level of these two characteristics makes a member feel comfortable when he expresses his opinions and makes suggestions without fear of being doubted by other members. They believe that others will listen to them and value what they say.
⑤One might say that most of these findings are clear. However, understanding group intelligence can help people make the basic changes that are necessary to increase the chance of a group’s success.
1.How did the university group do their research?
A.They collected information on how people behaved.
B.They studied the findings of some earlier research.
C.They asked people questions and explained the answers.
D.They discussed their opinions and found common pattern.
2.What can we learn about the researchers’ findings?
A.It’s important to divide time equally among group members at one meeting.
B.It is necessary for group members to understand each other’s feelings.
C.It is common for group members to be doubted in an effective group.
D.It is believed that group members are all friends during and outside of work.
3.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Value of Team Members B.The Secret of Group Research
C.The Key to Successful Work Teams D.The Competition between groups

2.What does Jones suggest for a more productive conversation?
A.Avoiding discussions. B.Preparing in advance.
C.Ignoring relevant data. D.Speaking without thinking.
3.When following Mandy’s advice, what should you do after the other person finishes speaking?
A.Walk away. B.Repeat their words exactly.
C.Briefly summarize their main points. D.Argue with them.
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
