Wang left his job as a TV cameraman in 2013 and started a documentary studio in Shenzhen. He came to this mountainous area for a business trip. That’s how he learned about the once-thriving coffee history dating back to the 1920s. Wang, as a coffee-lover, decided to make a documentary, tracing China’s coffee history and bringing attention to the unique Yunnan coffee and its special place in the global market. At the same time, coffee drinking in China has grown a lot since 2018, creating new opportunities. This inspired Wang to leave behind his successful studio and settle in the remote mountains. He set three main goals for himself: restore the land’s natural power, reshape local coffee bean production, and promote the rural value.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape(风景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,"Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night."While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia.
B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.
D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.
25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?
A. The cat would be closely watched.
B. The cat would get some medical care.
C. Benjamin would leave his home shortly.
D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon.
26. What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent?
A. He took him to see painting exhibitions.
B. He provided him with painting materials.
C. He sent him to a school in Philadelphia.
D. He taught him how to make engravings.
27. Williams’ two books helped Benjamin to _____________.
A. master the use of paints
B. appreciate landscape paintings
C. get to know other painters
D. make up his mind to be a painter
C 25. D 26. B 27. D
Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings”,
D细节理解题,根据最后一段“While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist, 可知:这两本书帮助Benjamin坚定了自己成为一名画家的决心,故选D.
【名师点睛】
本文后两个小题考查了细节题。在完成细节题时,要特别注意排除干扰项。如小题23中的D项“He taught him how to make engravings”属于“偷梁换柱”类干扰项,根据第三段第五句“He also sent six engravings by an artist”可知“这些版画是Pennington送给Benjamin的”,并非是Pennington教Benjamin如何画版画,说明D项明显错误。
C
Scientists have recorded plant species for centuries to help us understand and protect them. But according to new research, many have never actually been photographed (拍照) in their natural environment, and that’s a problem.
An Australian team surveyed 33 important online collections of plant photographs to check the photographic record of Australian plant species. The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20 percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. Thomas Mesaglio, the lead author of the study, said, “It is surprising to see how many plant species have just line drawings, paintings, or even no media at all.”
Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. “We thought every plant species had simply been photographed by someone, somewhere, throughout history. But it turns out this isn’t the case,” said Will Cornwell, another author of the study.
Photographs can help with scientists’ work by keeping characteristics (特征) like flower color that can get lost over time. They can also show additional features. But just as some animals catch less interest than others, some plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers.
Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by using the camera in their pocket. By using online tools like iNaturalist, the public can have their pictures identified (识别) by experts and share the information, which will be used in research and protection.
“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them,” said Mr. Mesaglio. “There could be many more in personal collections just waiting to be shared. People can get much more excited about plants with photographs.”
28. What did the survey find out regarding Australian plant species?
A. A rich source for artistic creation. B. A shortage of supporting photos.
C. A focus on online viewing. D. A sudden fall in numbers.
29. What is stressed (强调) about plant photography in paragraph 3?
A. It is challenging in faraway areas. B. It is mainly done by professionals.
C. It often goes unnoticed by scientists. D. It influences the survival of plant species.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning some animals in paragraph 4?
A. Colorful wildlife is far more valuable.
B. Some plants are as eye-catching as animals.
C. Plants with common features get little attention.
D. Animal photography receives wider recognition.
31. Which of the following is encouraged by the author?
A. Using digital tools to support plant protection.
B. Taking part in fieldwork to discover new species.
C. Protecting unique plants from being photographed.
D. Sharing valuable plant pictures with local museums.
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第二段中“The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20 percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. (调查结果显示,在21,077种澳大利亚本土植物中,近20%的植物仍然没有可以证明其身份细节的照片)”可知,调查发现澳大利亚植物物种缺乏用于证明其身份的支持性照片。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. (无法使用细节丰富的照片可能会产生实际影响。许多在野外难以区分的植物物种,如果科学家无法借助照片准确识别它们,可能会灭绝)”可知,第三段强调了植物摄影影响植物物种的生存,因为缺乏照片会导致科学家无法准确识别物种,可能使其灭绝。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“But just as some animals catch less interest than others, some plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers. (但就像有些动物不太引人关注一样,有些植物也面临着同样的情况。被拍摄得最多的植物群通常是一些更容易被注意到的树木。它们通常具有特殊的特征,比如色彩艳丽的花朵)”可推知,作者提及动物是为了类比说明具有普通特征的植物很少受到关注,就像有些动物不如其他动物受关注一样,普通植物也难以获得拍摄机会。故选C项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by using the camera in their pocket. By using online tools like iNaturalist, the public can have their pictures identified (识别) by experts and share the information, which will be used in research and protection. (由于如今数码摄影十分便捷,任何人都可以通过使用口袋里的相机为科学做出有意义的贡献。借助像iNaturalist这样的在线工具,公众可以让专家对自己拍摄的照片进行识别,并分享相关信息,这些信息将被用于研究和保护工作)”以及最后一段中Mr. Mesaglio所说的“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them (多亏了公众在网上分享他们拍摄的照片,以及热心帮忙辨认这些照片的专家们,我们已经确认了那些之前从未被拍摄过的物种中的近10%)”可知,作者鼓励使用数字工具来支持植物保护。故选A项。
D
At 6 a.m. in an English village, hundreds of pinkish white sows are waking up for breakfast. But first, they have to get their pictures taken. As each pig squeezes into her feeding area, a tiny camera snaps a photo of her face. And in less than 1 second, an artificial intelligence system identifies her based on facial features. Armed with that information, the AIorders a customized meal to shoot into the trough (食槽).
Meanwhile, the system continues to analyze her photo, looking for negative signs in her facial expression that she might be in pain, sick, or in emotional distress. If it finds any, it sends an immediate alert to the farmer — the guy enjoying a morning coffee over in the next room.
These hungry piggies are the testers of Intellipig, a system being developed by scientists to deal with a fundamental problem in animal welfare: we human beings are just not the best at understanding how animals are feeling.
Tools like Intellipig could usher in (开启) a new era of caring for animals that gives higher priority to their health, welfare, and protection, says Melvyn Smith, an engineer leading the design of the Intellipig system. There are indications that they could go even further. Eventually, AI might even outshine humans in interpreting a range of more complex emotions like happiness, frustration, or fear, he says — feelings that are equally important to understand if we are to give animals the best possible lives.
But like most scientists considering the powers of AI, animal behavior researchers worry about putting too much stock in machines, especially when animal welfare is at risk. “Maybe a machine will end up being better than us; I don’t know,” says Emma Baxter, an animal behavior scientist. “I hope there’s room for experts, to make sure that the AI is actually doing what it says it is.”
32. What can the Intellipig system do automatically?
A. Monitor pigs’ well-being. B. Clean pigs’ living spaces.
C. Deliver medical services to pigs. D. Provide standardized diets for pigs.
33. What is Melvyn Smith’s attitude towards AI’s role in animal care?
A. Concerned. B. Positive. C. Cautious. D. Skeptical.
34. What approach does Emma Baxter support when it comes to AI and animal care?
A. Banning the use of AI. B. Restricting AI to basic tasks.
C. Keeping professionals involved. D. Minimizing human intervention.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Intellipig: AI Provides 24/7 Animal Care
B. Intellipig: AI Can Understand Animal Speech
C. Intellipig: AI Replaces Farmers in Animal Care
D. Intellipig: AI Assists in Detecting Animal Emotions
A 33. B 34. C 35. D

根据第二段“Meanwhile, the system continues to analyze her photo, looking for negative signs in her facial expression that she might be in pain, sick, or in emotional distress. If it finds any, it sends an immediate alert to the farmer — the guy enjoying a morning coffee over in the next room.(与此同时,该系统会继续分析它的照片,寻找其面部表情中可能表明它正处于疼痛、生病或情绪困扰状态的负面迹象。如果发现了任何此类迹象,系统会立即向农民发出警报——而此时这位农民正在隔壁房间里惬意地喝着晨间咖啡)”可知,Intellipig系统能够自动监测猪的健康状况,包括身体和情绪方面,故选A。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Tools like Intellipig could usher in (开启) a new era of caring for animals that gives higher priority to their health, welfare, and protection, says Melvyn Smith, an engineer leading the design of the Intellipig system. There are indications that they could go even further. Eventually, AI might even outshine humans in interpreting a range of more complex emotions like happiness, frustration, or fear, he says — feelings that are equally important to understand if we are to give animals the best possible lives.(负责设计Intellipig系统的工程师梅尔文・史密斯表示,像Intellipig这样的工具能够开启一个关爱动物的新时代,在这个时代里,动物的健康、福利和保护被置于更高的优先地位。有迹象表明,这些工具还能发挥更大的作用。他说,最终,人工智能在解读诸如快乐、沮丧或恐惧等一系列更为复杂的情绪方面,甚至可能会超越人类——如果我们想要给予动物尽可能好的生活,理解这些情绪同样至关重要)”可推知,Melvyn Smith对人工智能在动物护理方面持积极乐观态度,故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中Emma Baxter所说的话“I hope there’s room for experts, to make sure that the AI is actually doing what it says it is.(我希望有专家参与的空间,以确保人工智能确实在做它所说的事情)”可推知,她希望专业人士仍然参与其中,以确保AI系统发挥应有作用,故选C。
根据第二段“Meanwhile, the system continues to analyze her photo, looking for negative signs in her facial expression that she might be in pain, sick, or in emotional distress. If it finds any, it sends an immediate alert to the farmer — the guy enjoying a morning coffee over in the next room.(与此同时,该系统会继续分析它的照片,寻找其面部表情中可能表明它正处于疼痛、生病或情绪困扰状态的负面迹象。如果发现了任何此类迹象,系统会立即向农民发出警报——而此时这位农民正在隔壁房间里惬意地喝着晨间咖啡)”以及文章重点介绍了AI如何通过识别动物面部特征来判断情绪和健康状态,而不是提供全天候照料或替代农场主,D选项“Intellipig:人工智能协助检测动物情绪”准确概括了文章的主要内容,是文章最佳标题。故选D。

【36题详解】
上文“Trust is the belief in someone or something’s ability, strength, truth or reliability. (信任是对某人或某事的能力、力量、真相或可靠性的信任。)”对信任进行定义,指出信任是相信他人的能力、真诚度和可靠性;下文“You place your trust in another individual and ask that he/she places his/her trust in you.(你会信任另一个人,同时也期望对方对你报以信任。)” B“In fact, trust is a two-way street. (事实上,信任是双向的)”衔接上下文,引出“双向信任” 的核心逻辑,符合语境,与第二段中“When parents and teens trust each other”相呼应。故选B。
【37题详解】
上文“To establish a trusting relationship with your parents, let them know what you need from them. Sometimes they may not realize they’re doing something that makes worry about how you’ll react. (为了与父母建立信任关系,让他们知道你需要从他们那里得到什么。有时他们可能没有意识到他们在做一些让你担心与他们交谈的事情。) ”指出,应该让父母知道你的需求以及担心,由空前“Mom/Dad, I want to tell you about some things I’m thinking about. (妈妈/爸爸,我想告诉你一些我在想的事情。)”以及空后“Can we figure out a way for me to share things without you reacting right away?(我们能不能想个办法让我和你分享而不让你马上做出反应?)” 与前文构成转折,且解释希望父母不立刻回应的原因,符合语境,“worry about how you’ll react”与上文中“worry about how you’ll react”相呼应。故选C。
由下文“Parents aren’t mind-readers and many spend a lot of time worrying about their kids. When your parents trust you to stay at home by yourself, spend time with someone significant or use technology like social media to tell them how much that means to you.(父母不会读心术,很多人会花很多时间担心孩子。当你的父母相信你可以独自呆在家里时,花时间和重要的人在一起,或者使用社交媒体等技术告诉他们这对你有多重要。)”可知,本段主要讲述孩子应该主动表达,告诉父母他们的信任很重要,D选项“Tell your parents how much their trust matters to you.(告诉你的父母,他们的信任对你有多重要)”概括了回应父母信任的具体做法,适合作为段首句,引起下文,符合语境。故选D。
【39题详解】
由上文“Being honest with your parents is the best way to earn their trust.(对父母诚实是赢得他们信任的最好方法。)”以及下文“They’ll gain a better understanding of how you’re doing, both when you’re doing great and when you need their help.(他们会更好地理解你做得如何,无论是当你做得很好时,还是当你需要他们的帮助时。) ”可知,此空阐述对父母诚实所起的作用和益处,F选项“Telling the truth gives your parents a chance to go into your world.(说实话能让你的父母有机会走进你的世界。)”
上文“Lying is a quick way to break someone’s trust.(说谎是打破别人信任的最快方法。) ”指出说谎对于建立信任关系的危害,G选项“Moreover, it will be even worse when parents find out from someone who isn’t you.(此外,当父母从别人那里知道这件事时,情况会更糟。)”

On a cold winter evening, Li Ming walked home with heavy steps, his heart heavy with the news of failing an important exam at school. His father was sitting in the living room, reading the newspaper, while his mother was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner. Afraid to face their disappointed looks, yet knowing he should be honest, Li Ming hesitated. Just then, his mother called him to help set the table.
As they sat down for dinner, the atmosphere was tense. Li Ming’s father asked about his day, and Li Ming knew he couldn’t avoid the topic any longer. “Dad, Mom, I have something to tell you,” he said, his voice trembling. “I failed the exam.” The room fell silent. His father’s face turned strict, and his mother looked worried. “How could this happen?” his father demanded. “You’ve been studying so hard.”
Li Ming felt a wave of shame and frustration. He tried to explain, but his words were chaotic (混乱的). “I… I don’t know. I thought I was prepared, but it was really difficult.” His mother put a hand on his arm, trying to comfort him. “We need to figure out what went wrong and how we can help you improve,” she said, her tone softer than his father’s.

Then, his father got up and walked to Li Ming’s room. He took out all of Li Ming’s study materials and started to analyze where Li Ming might have made mistakes. Then Li Ming’s mother joined him.
The family gathered around the table, and they talked openly. His father pointed out some of Li Ming’s study method problems. His mother shared her own learning experiences in her youth and encouraged him to adjust his study method and never give up. Li Ming listened carefully and felt a warm current in his heart. He realized that with his family’s support, he could face difficulties bravely and do better in the next exam. Li Ming knew his parents loved and cared for him. Now he had more confidence and made up his mind to study harder in the future.

D. He taught him how to make engravings.
27. Williams’ two books helped Benjamin to _____________.
A. master the use of paints

“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them” said Mr.

At 6 a.m. in an English village, hundreds of pinkish white sows are waking up for breakfast.

A Cold Winter Evening
