Do you still hug your parents? How do you feel when you hug them? When do you need a hug the most? It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock went off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad had died a few weeks before. I felt weighed down by sadness.
My father was strong, he had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He sometimes shouted at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved us.
Still, he had been raised (养育) in a traditional way and raised us that way too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.
After my mom and grandma passed away, my dad moved into Grandma’s home. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life, but we still seldom touched and never hugged. Finally his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his memorial service (追悼会), but I was too cold inside myself to feel it. I couldn’t remember when we had our last hug.
I sighed (叹气) and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heartfelt (真诚的) hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joyce, this hug is from me!” I cried and smiled at the same time. At that moment, in the place where the heart, mind, and spirit all met, I felt loved. I felt loved by my dad. I felt loved by life.

It might be fun to use your smart phone, but be careful. Too much screen time may be harmful to your health.
First, it is bad for your eyes. A researcher called Sarah Hinkley says the problem comes from the blue light that the screen gives out. Looking at a smartphone for a long time can cause eye strain (眼疲劳), headaches and dry eyes. So it is a good idea to take a break every 15 minutes when you are working at a computer or using a smartphone.
Second, screen use can do harm to children’s brains. A new study shows that watching screens for too long can affect how children’s brains grow. If children watch screens for more than one hour a day, they might have lower levels of white matter in their brains. White matter is the key to the development of language and reading skills. So it is wise to cut down the time of children watching all kinds of screens.
Third, watching screens for long will affect your sleep. According to a study, about 95% of the people between the ages of 13 and 64 use electronic products before bed, especially the young people under 20. Doctors say that the light from those electronic products at night may make you excited before you go to bed. Then it’s hard for you to get enough sleep. So you’d better turn off smartphones, TVs, and all other screens an hour before your bedtime.
To keep healthy, doctors and researchers strongly advise that you shouldn’t watch screens for long hours.
53. According to the passage, you can’t sleep well if you _________.
A. take a break every 15 minutes

It’s important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult. There are also pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.
Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they’re going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can also have a manners competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldn’t be noisy in class. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. When children are at table, good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouth full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners are very helpful in children’s self-growth. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

My Favorite Music
Among all kinds of music, I love soft pop and folk music most.
Soft pop’s gentle melody makes me relaxed after a long day of study. Folk music, with its warm lyrics, often tells touching stories about daily life. It gives me hope when I feel down and helps me out of difficulties.
These two kinds of music not only calm my mind but also open my eyes to the beauty of ordinary life. They are like my close friends, staying with me all the time.
