The human body can’t handle excessive heat by itself. The processes that keep us alive work best within a certain temperature window, which is generally between about 36 °C and 37 °C, depending on the person.
“If someone’s core body temperature goes higher than 37 °C, the body’s primary response to heat is to try to get rid of it,” explains Jonathan Samet. To get rid of the extra heat, blood vessels in the skin expand. At the same time, the heart begins beating faster. That pushes blood flow to the skin. There, the blood can release heat to cool down. Meanwhile, sweating kicks in to cool the skin.
But there is a limit to how much the body can adjust. If the body has to keep dealing with extreme heat without any break, it gets worn out. People can experience heat exhaustion, which causes weakness, dizziness and nausea. If a person still doesn’t cool off, heat stroke (中暑) may occur.
This signals that the body’s ability to adjust heat has broken down. This can allow core body temperature to climb as high as 40 ℃. Heat stroke can cause convulsions (痉挛) or a coma. Without treatment, death may follow.
No one is immune to heat stroke. But it hits some groups harder than others. The elderly are considered as the most sensitive who more easily suffer from heat stroke than other groups. Children, too, are at risk because they haven’t fully developed the ability to adjust heat. And pregnant women can struggle because of the demands that the fetus puts on the body. People with chronic (慢性的) diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity also can have trouble cooling their bodies. And people living in poverty often lack air conditioning and other resources to help them beat the heat.
8. What’s the most likely meaning of the underlined word “excessive”?
A. Enough. B. Extra. C. Low. D. Normal.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. How heat stroke happens. B. How our body releases heat.
C. How sweat cools our body. D. How body heat climbs to 40 °C.
10. What can heat stroke result in according to the text?
A. Bleeding. B. Obesity. C. Death. D. Chronic diseases.
11. Who are the most easily hit by heat stroke?
A. The young. B. The disabled. C. The poor. D. The elderly.

I had been living with Dino and his family for ten days or so, who lived and worked in the rainforest. They were the “bad guys”, burning much of the western Amazon Rainforest to turn it into cattle farms. They were also some of the nicest and warmest hosts. They are a family trying to survive in a very tough environment through hard work. Their view and understanding of the problems the Amazon Rainforest faces are different from mine. I see the Amazon Rainforest as an extraordinarily valuable life that should be treasured and protected at all costs — the world needs it, and we all need it. However, the Dinos see the Amazon Rainforest as a vast, lasting resource that feeds them. After talking with them, I realized their respect for it was as deep as my own: they just saw it very differently.
Cattle farming in the Amazon Rainforest is perhaps mainly responsible for the fires we are seeing now. It is an industry of cutting forest, burning it and turning it to cattle farms. Fires spread throughout the Amazon Rainforest every year as a result of that practice. Putting cattle on the land means replacing trees with animals that produce damaging levels of greenhouse gases. This is just about the most stupid thing humans can do.
One morning after a fire, I returned to the land. I felt as though I had seen the blue smoke from those blackened tree trunks that remained upright, which are memorials to human stupidity.
The problems the Amazon Rainforest faces are perhaps more complex now than ever before but they are curable. We need to decide where and how we appoint and apply values based on sensible economic models that favor both the farmer and the forest. One of the issues facing the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest now is a loosening of rules by the current administration which has opened up more land for deforestation (毁林) and burning. This could be disastrous, both for the Amazon Rainforest and the rest of the world.
12. Why does the author mention the Dinos?
A. To give background information.
B. To lead in the topic of the text.
C. To describe a unique life style.
D. To stress the importance of the Amazon Rainforest.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The main cause of forest fires. B. The sources of greenhouse gases.
C. The importance of cattle farming. D. The consequences of cattle farming.
14. What did the land in paragraph 3 remind the author of?
A. The beautiful blue smoke.
B. His memory about the land.
C. The trees that once stood there.
D. Our foolishness of destroying the land.
15. What should Brazil do to solve the problems Amazon Rainforest faces?
A. Offer more land to farmer. B. Take stricter measures.
C. Appoint economic models. D. Prevent the deeds of burning.

“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.

B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第一段中划线词所在句下文“The processes that keep us alive work best within a certain temperature window, which is generally between about 36 °C and 37 °C, depending on the person. (维持人体生命活动的各项机能,在特定的体温区间内运作最佳,因人而异,这个区间通常在36摄氏度至37摄氏度之间)”可知,超出这个区间的热量属于多余的热量。结合第二段人体散热的反应可推断,“excessive”意为“多余的”。故选B项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“But there is a limit to how much the body can adjust. If the body has to keep dealing with extreme heat without any break, it gets worn out. People can experience heat exhaustion, which causes weakness, dizziness and nausea. If a person still doesn’t cool off, heat stroke (中暑) may occur. (但人体的调节能力是有限的。如果身体不得不持续应对极端高温而没有任何休息,就会不堪重负。人们会出现热衰竭,症状包括虚弱、头晕和恶心。如果此时身体仍未降温,就可能会引发中暑)”可知,该段主要阐述了中暑的发生过程。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Heat stroke can cause convulsions (痉挛) or a coma. Without treatment, death may follow. (中暑会引发痉挛或昏迷。如果得不到救治,可能会导致死亡)”可知,中暑若不及时治疗会导致死亡。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“No one is immune to heat stroke. But it hits some groups harder than others. The elderly are considered as the most sensitive who more easily suffer from heat stroke than other groups. (没有人对中暑有免疫力,但有些人群受到的影响会更大。老年人被认为是最易感的群体,他们比其他人群更容易中暑)”可知,最容易中暑的人群是老年人。故选D项。

The problems the Amazon Rainforest faces are perhaps more complex now than ever before, but they are curable.
B 13. D 14. D 15. B

再根据第二段中“Cattle farming in the Amazon Rainforest is perhaps mainly responsible for the fires we are seeing now. (亚马逊雨林的养牛业也许是目前我们所看到的火灾的主要原因。)”可知,第二段开始引出文章的主题,即亚马逊雨林面临的问题。所以作者提到Dino一家是为了引出文章的主题。故选B项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Cattle farming in the Amazon Rainforest is perhaps mainly responsible for the fires we are seeing now.
根据第三段中“I felt as though I had seen the blue smoke from those blackened tree trunks that remained upright, which are memorials to human stupidity. (我觉得我好像看到了那些直立着的黑色树干上冒出的蓝烟,它们是人类愚蠢的纪念碑。)”可知,火灾后的土地上,烧焦的树干如同人类愚蠢行为的纪念碑,即这片土地让作者想到人类破坏土地的愚昧行径。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“One of the issues facing the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest now is a loosening of rules by the current administration which has opened up more land for deforestation (毁林) and burning. This could be disastrous, both for the Amazon Rainforest and the rest of the world. (当前巴西亚马逊雨林面临的问题之一是现任政府放宽了相关规定,这使得更多土地被用于毁林和焚烧。这无论是对亚马逊雨林还是对世界其他地区而言,都可能是灾难性的。)”可知,巴西当前政府放宽相关规定,导致毁林烧荒现象加剧,这会带来灾难性后果。因此,巴西要解决亚马逊雨林面临的问题,需采取更严格的管控措施。故选B项。

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without money?” he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.

Suddenly he had an idea. He rushed back to his desk and pulled out the piece of paper he had written about his mom for the contest. His words painted a clear picture of her love! Why not make that his gift? He carefully copied his description onto a fresh, nicer piece of paper. Then, remembering how much his mom loved the bedtime stories, he decided to illustrate it. He drew little pictures beside each special thing he had written. It wasn’t bought with money, but it was filled with his true feelings and memories.
The next morning, Jim handed his present to his mom. “Happy Mother’s Day!” he said, a little nervous. His mom unfolded the paper and began to read. As her eyes moved over his words and drawings, a soft smile spread across her face. Then, her eyes grew shiny with tears. She pulled Jim into the biggest, warmest hug, right there in the kitchen. “Oh, Jim,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion, “this is the best present I could ever ask for. It’s perfect.”
