“A good book is easy to find.” That is the message on a sign at Henry Gray’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Gray has turned his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside at no cost. Gray says he hopes his library will encourage people to read more, especially the young.
The 72-year-old man calls the library Reading Club 2000. He said that his library has different kinds of books for students of all ages: from young children in kindergarten to older students in Grade 12. “There are books for those who are looking for natural knowledge, autobiography (传记), and many different kinds that one can enjoy, all for free,” he added.
He started his library more than 20 years ago when he set 50 books on the walkway in front of his home. The number of books has grown greatly over the years—thanks to the books from donors (捐赠者). Speaking of donors, he said, “They just leave boxes of books outside my house.” He has also started giving away books himself. He sends reading materials to public schools in faraway areas.
Gray’s efforts come at a time when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. An international report shows that reading scores of the students in the Philippines are among the lowest in the world. They also fall behind in math and science.

Bethany Hamilton, a girl from Hawaii, loved surfing more than anything. However, when she was only thirteen, a big tiger shark bit off her left arm while she lay on her board. She lost almost half of her blood and spent many days in the hospital. After the doctors saved her, she discovered her hardest problem: fear. Every time she thought about the ocean, she saw the shark and felt her heart pound (狂跳). She cried at night because the waves, once her playground, now looked like a scary place.
One morning, her father drove her to the beach. He said, “The sea is still yours if you want it.” Bethany saw other surfers laughing in the water and felt a warm wish inside. She didn’t want to live in fear. Therefore, she decided to change her situation.
First, she asked her parents and older brothers to help her practise on a longer, thicker board. They pushed her into tiny waves and stayed beside her like safety ropes. During her recovery, her best friend Alana sent her funny messages every day so she would not feel alone. Bethany also did hundreds of push-ups (俯卧撑) and swam laps (泳道的一圈) to make her right arm and legs very strong.
Day after day, she stood up, fell, stood up again. One month later, she paddled (划水) out alone. Two years later, she won first place in the National Surfing Championships. Today, Bethany teaches children around the world. Courage means being scared but still trying.

My Growth Story
Hello everyone! I’m Li Ming. I’m excited to share my story of growth with you.
In the past, I was so shy that I seldom spoke in public. This became a big challenge when I joined a speech competition. I felt extremely nervous and worried about making mistakes. To overcome it, I practiced speaking every day and asked my teacher for help. Gradually, I became more confident. Finally, I won a prize in the competition. This experience changed me a lot, making me more outgoing and brave.
From this, I learned that challenges can help us discover our true selves and grow.
Thank you!

Gray is confident about his goals. “My wish is to give away used and donated books to others at no cost,” he said, “and to make students more knowledgeable.”
26. Why did Gray turn his home into a library according to Paragraph 1?
A. To support his poor family. B. To live a colorful late life.
C. To make people read more. D. To meet his own reading need.
27. What can we know about the books in the library?
A. They are popular among children and adults. B. They are on the same topic of natural knowledge.
C. They aren’t free to borrow from the club. D. They are very rich in kind.
28. How did Gray get the books for the library?
A. By turning to public schools for help. B. By collecting books from donors.
C. By getting support from faraway areas. D. By buying new books himself.
