The challenge was to connect nine dots in a 3×3 grid (网格), using only four lines, without lifting your pencil. The group that I was in was an artificial intelligence lab, and the members seemed to be more driven to challenge the boundaries of the puzzle than to solve it. Most people solved the four-line version rather quickly. Then someone declared that he could do it with three lines by skewing (歪斜) the lines. Then someone claimed he could make it with two lines. And then one line. Finally one person said he could solve the puzzle without lines only by folding the paper so that the dots were one above the other! Done! Kimi, the group leader, was not amused. He seemed to think he had lost control of the activity. While the point of the activity was to teach thinking outside the box, he complained about our not following the rules. The natural resistance of the crowd erupted, and we took a break. The world has been breaking boundaries at an increasing pace but embracing change — especially change that challenges fundamental beliefs about the world and ourselves — is difficult. Even those of us who do this for a living are challenged. I remember my son asking me, when he was in fifth grade, what it would mean if people could be cloned. He had read an article about cloning somewhere and was clearly concerned about the potential consequences. I laughed, telling him that scientists were not yet able to clone even a bee, let alone a person. It was not something he needed to worry about. The funny thing was that the very next week, the front page of the New York Times greeted us with a photograph of Dolly, the first cloned animal. And, as with many of these breakthroughs, we are still struggling to absorb them into the belief of our societies and ourselves. 24. Which was a rule of the nine-dot problem? A. Connect all dots in a grid. B. Use four lines at most. C. Don’t move the pencil. D. Fold the paper if necessary. 25. Why did the company introduce the nine-dot problem to the staff? A To change the company’s culture. B. To test the artificial intelligence. C. To inspire the innovative spirit. D. To improve the team cooperation. 26. What was Kimi’s reaction to the members’ approaches to the puzzle? A. He was shocked by their creativity. B. He was amused at their attempts. C. He was satisfied with their brilliant ideas. D. He was annoyed by their playful attitude. 27. What is the story in the last paragraph intended to prove? A. Changes are hard to accept. B. Technology makes everything possible. C. Cloning is just a click away. D. Boundaries are broken every day. C The Painting Fool is one of a growing number of computer programs which are claimed to have creative talents. But human beings are often thought to be the only species to perform creative acts regularly. If this process is broken down into computer code, where does that leave human creativity? Indeed, we are all familiar with computerized art. Aaron, one of the oldest machine artists, can pick up a paintbrush and paint on its own. Impressive perhaps, but it is still little more than a tool to realize the programmer’s own creative ideas. Simon Colton, the designer of the Painting Fool, is keen to make sure his creation doesn’t attract the same criticism. Unlike earlier machine artists such as Aaron, the Painting Fool only needs a little direction and can come up with its own ideas by running its own web searches to search for necessary materials. It is now beginning to display a kind of imagination too. One of its original works is a series of fuzzy (模模糊糊的) landscapes of trees and the sky. While some might say they have a mechanical (呆板的,机械的) look, Colton argues that such reactions arise from people’s double standards towards software-produced and human-produced art. After all, he says, the Painting Fool painted the landscapes without referring to a photo. “If a child painted a new scene from its head, you’d say it has a certain level of imagination,” he points out. “The same should be true of a machine.” Where does this prejudice come from? Colton thinks that when people experience art, they wonder what the artist might have been thinking or what the artist is trying to tell them. It seems obvious, therefore, that with computers producing art, this thinking is cut short — there’s nothing to explore. But as technology becomes increasingly complex, finding those greater depths in computer art could become possible. This is why Colton asks the Painting Fool to tap into online social networks for its inspiration: hopefully, this way it will choose themes that will already be meaningful to us. 28. In which way is the Painting Fool different from Aaron? A. It paints with a paintbrush. B. It searches for inspiration online. C. It realizes the designer’s ideas. D. It is full of imagination. 29. Which belief does “this prejudice” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Computerized artworks are mindless. B. Software-produced art is faultless. C. Artificial artists are good for nothing. D. The Painting Fool has a mechanical look. 30. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of the Painting Fool? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Intolerant. D. Positive. 31. What is the best title of the text? A. Aaron: Ready to be Upgraded. B. Art: By Human or By Software. C. The Painting Fool: An Artificial Artist. D. Colton: Mixing Art and Technology. D Antarctica contains a wealth of meteorites (陨石). Currently, scientists find around 1,000 meteorites in Antarctica each year. But a new study published in Nature Climate Change estimates that about 5,000 are buried out of sight every year due to warming temperature. To date, the identification of the meteorites strongly relies on chance and through expensive labor-extensive trips. Most meteorites are recovered near the base of mountains. There, strong winds brush away snow, exposing the bright blue ice. Instead of melting, some of the ice changes directly into water vapor (水蒸气), helping to expose meteorites that otherwise would remain buried. Meteorites on the surface can quickly disappear, though. Meteorites, with their dark crust (硬壳), absorb solar energy easily and warm up even when temperatures are well below zero. The warmed meteorites can melt the underlying ice, creating a small water melt pocket beneath the stone. Over time, this pocket deepens into a hole, which results in meteorites sinking below the surface and disappearing from view. Researches indicate that even minor increases in temperature can have a significant impact on the presence of meteorites on the surface. Scientists have developed a model that helps to identify where meteorites might surface. Based on the expected warming, the team’s computer simulations (模拟) have shown that about one-third of visible meteorites will sink under the ice before the end of this century. This translates to a total loss of between 80,000 and 250,000 meteorites. This would be an unrecoverable loss to science because each meteorite tells a story of the solar system’s evolution. Therefore, it’s pressing to find more meteorites before they disappear. Zekollari says, “Certain areas where the study predicts meteorites will disappear more quickly should be prioritized”. 32. What’s the major challenge in finding meteorites in Antarctica? A. Extreme cold temperature. B. The rapid melting of blue ice. C. Telling meteorites from rocks. D. High costs and low probability. 33. Why are meteorites often found near the base of mountains? A. Meteorites are created by mountain impacts. B. Meteorites often roll down from mountains. C. Mountain wind helps meteorites surface. D. Mountain snow easily changes into vapour. 34. Why do meteorites disappear from the surface in Antarctica? A. They are covered by fresh snowfall. B. They are buried in ice-melt holes. C. They are blown away by strong winds. D. They are collected by researchers. 35. What should we do according to Zekollari’s suggestion? A. Increase the frequency of trips to Antarctica. B. Target high-risk areas for meteorite loss. C. Take measures to reduce global warming. D. Develop technologies to locate meteorites. “Growth Mindset” has become a new catchphrase. Having a “Growth Mindset” means believing that you can get better at things through hard work, good strategies and learning from others. People with this mindset try more and achieve more because they focus on learning, not just on being smart. ____36____. Here are three common misunderstandings: Growth mindset is just about positive thinking. A growth mindset is often confused with positive thinking or optimism. While a positive attitude can be beneficial, a growth mindset is more about embracing challenges, pressing on despite difficulties, and seeing effort as a path to mastery. A growth mindset doesn’t require saying “yes” to every opportunity or over-committing oneself. ____37____ — specifically, those things that are in line with your long-term goals. Growth mindset is just about being perfect. Even if we don’t always succeed, we should know that the process produces these things, such as trying new strategies and making new friends. ____38____. ____39____. While persistence (坚持) is a key component of a growth mindset, it’s also important to recognize when a goal is no longer achievable or beneficial. A growth mindset includes the wisdom to adjust goals and change paths when necessary. Even if we realize these mistakes, it’s still not easy to attain a growth mindset. ____40____. It requires consistent effort and self-reflection over time. A. Growth mindset is not a quick fix B. It’s about prioritizing what truly matters C. Growth mindset is about changing goals D. Growth mindset means you should never give up E. But some people misunderstand what a growth mindset is F. They can shape us into better individuals regardless of final outcome G. Closed said another. “They all say it’s haunted (闹鬼),” I said to Mom. “Sometimes movies play there all by themselves.” “No way,” Mom said, “It closed a couple of years ago.” But later that night, I did hear music coming through my window and see lights flashing on the drive-in’s screen. I felt a sudden thrill of fear. On my insistence, Mom agreed to make an exploration with me. The next evening, we headed to check things out. The place was like a big parking lot, with a sea of pavement (硬路面). Wild grass was pushing through the gaps. When we were wondering what to encounter in such a forgotten world, suddenly an older man got out. “This is private property (财产),” he said angrily. “Sorry,” Mom said. “We just moved here. I used to come here as a kid. That was my happiest time.” The man’s face relaxed. “Sorry. I don’t usually get visitors.” “Maybe that’s because ghosts play movies here,” I said. “Sam!” Mom shot me a look. But the man laughed. “I am the one playing those movies,” he said and then introduced himself as Nick. “I am reliving the past. When my dad opened this place in 1957, we’d get 300 cars on a good night, mostly families.” “Why did you close it?” I asked. “I can’t afford a digital projector (投影仪). It is too expensive — twice as much as a new car!” Nick said, “Movies are now sent on a hard drive or disk instead of film (胶片). Without new film, I had to close. It was either to go digital or go dark.” “If you had that projector” I asked, “would you open again?” “Sure,” Nick said. That night, I kept thinking how I could help Nick. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The big day finally arrived: the Galaxy Drive-In back in business. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 大连市2024~2025学年度第一学期期末考试 高二英语 命题人:孙越 张云 李相欣 审题人:董霞 注意事项: 1. 6. I have many magical experiences with this quote. When struggling with maths, I murmured the quote repeatedly. Surprisingly, I was inspired to carry on and achieved improvement in the end. Similarly, when I faced the fear of public speaking, the quote pushed me to hold my head up and go all out. Thanks to this quote, I become more determined, optimistic and persevering. That night I kept thinking how I could help Nick. A brilliant idea struck me — why not launch a fundraising online? I switched on the computer and started to design a poster — Help save the Galaxy Drive-In! I detailed the current situation of the Galaxy and called for donations. Unbelievably, over the next few weeks, my post went viral, liked and forwarded tens of thousands of times. Many people commented and shared their happy moments. Funding was like a snowball rolling bigger and bigger. When Nick finally received the digital projector, tears twinkled in his eyes. The big day finally arrived: the Galaxy Drive-In back in business. The giant screen over the trees was lit up. The once-neglected lot was filled with the glow of headlights and excited voices. Families piled into their cars, ready to experience the magic of the drive-in once again. Nick stood at the entrance, greeting each car with a wave and a smile. He looked over at Mom and me. “Thank you,” he mouthed. I felt a thrill of pride, knowing that I had brought back both the Galaxy Drive-In and the community’s sweet memories.
