When I was in high school,I met a teacher who would change the way I viewed education
and life. Her name was Mrs.Korthaus.She was the beloved English teacher at our small high
school in rural Pennsylvania. Her larger-than-life personality and passionate approach to teaching
made her unforgettable.Despite being a bit older than most teachers, she brought energy and
fearlessness to the classroom. She showed us in the best light, and truly saw the good in us.
Her belief in us made us believe in ourselves.
All this is why, more than 25 years after I left her classroom,I moved back. That day,I
received a message asking if I could help fill in as an English teacher at a local community
college.Without a second thought,I said yes.
As I began teaching,I soon realized that the role of a teacher was not just about imparting
(knowledge.Just as Mrs.Korthaus had done,I tried to see each of my students.for who
they truly were.I noticed a boy who struggled with mental health but was still determined to
learn, and his mother worked night shifts to support her children. There were many others
with equally moving stories.I tumbled to the fact that teaching is about seeing your students,
and helping them see the value in themselves.
Teaching English, especially in a class that wasn't always passionate about literature,
was challenging, but I kept reminding myself of the lessons I learned from Mrs.Korthaus
Over the course of the term,I found that teaching was more.than a job for me-it was a calling.
My students may not all have been passionate about literature, but I knew that through our
work together, they would walk away knowing that someone believed in them.
Looking back,I know that I wouldn't be the teacher I am today without Mrs.Korthaus's
influence, and I still think of her as my role model.

Reducing the amount of salt teens eat by 3 grams per day-that's about 1,200 milligrams
of sodium()or a 1/2.teaspoon of salt-could lead to a 68 percent drop in the number of
teenagers with high blood pressure and also lower the number of U.S.adults with heart
学
conditions in the future, according to a new study by scientists at the University of California,
San Francisco(UCSF).
High blood pressure can lead to strokes and heart attacks.Although these problems are
举
not common in'teens, studies have found that young adults in their 20s and 30s who have high
blood pressure often began the struggle as children.
☑
Dr.Kristin Bibbins-Domingo,lead author of the UCSF study, says that our taste for salt
is something we learn over time."We can hopefully change the expectation of how food should
taste, aiming for something less salty,"she says.
才
The study found that if teenagers today started eating a 1/2 teaspoon less of salt each
day, there could be as much as a 43 percent fall in more than 2.7 million adults between ages
烟
35 and 50 who suffer from high blood pressure.Bibbins-Domingo explains,"Your body gets
used to foods you eat,so the key is to set habits for healthy eating throughout your life.
The U.S.Department of Agriculture(USDA)currently recommends people over age two
哦
eat fewer than 2,300 mg of sodium per day-the equivalent to about 1 teaspoon of salt. However,
researchers say most Americans eat nearly twice that much, with teenagers consuming more
salty food than any other age group.
Experts suggest making gradual reductions in the amount of sodium.your teenager eats
can help.For.a list of common foods and their sodium content, visit the USDA's National Nutrient
Database. Also, the National Institutes of Health provides this blood pressure table to help
you understand the healthy blood pressure ranges for children between ages one and 17.
28.What does the UCSF study suggest?

South America's tropical forests grew well when temperatures skyrocketed 56 million
years ago. This raises an interesting question:Will the Amazon survive climate change?
Carlos Jaramillo,a scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama,
and his team studied pollen and other plant remains from three sites in Colombia and Venezuela.
They examined samples()from a period known as the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum
(PETMD),when greenhouse gases caused global temperatures to rise by 5C in about 10,000 years.
During the PETM,tropical forests faced average temperatures up to 34C,compared to today's
最
27C.Surprisingly,the pollen samples showed an increase in plant species ()Each sample
from the PETM contained an average of 36 species, while older, cooler periods had only 24
都
species.Additionally, the rate at which new species formed was significantly higher in the PETM
than before it.
邮
These findings are surprising because the climate models show that the Amazon will turn
into a dry savanna due to climate change. However,Jaramillo's research suggests that the
difference may be down to rainfall. He found no evidence()of reduced rainfall during the
长
PETM and discovered pollen from plants that prefer wet environments. In contrast, today's
combination of climate change and deforestation is expected to dry out the Amazon.
Jaramillo believes that deforestation plays a major role in modern climate change effects.
When forests are cleared, the land becomes dry quickly."If we didn't have deforestation in
鏘
the tropics, the forests might manage climate change better,"he explains.
Matthew Huber,a researcher'from Purdue University,stresses that Jaramillo's results
might not apply to the entire tropical region. The samples were taken from the north of South
邦
America, and areas farther south, like central Brazil, may experience much hotter conditions.
Still,Huber praises Jaramillo's work as a significant achievement."This research gives us a
window into a world we've never seen before,"Huber says.
32.What did the pollen samples from the PETM show?
A.More new species had appeared.
B.The temperature stayed at 34C.
C.All plant species were in danger.
D.The environment became cooler.
33.What might explain the difference in modern climate impacts according to Jaramillo?
A.High rainfall.
B.Rising temperatures.
C.Deforestation.
D.Unexpected wildfires.
34.What is Huber's attitude towards Jaramillo's work?
A.Unclear.
B.Positive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Negative.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The Deadly Result Deforestation Will Bring
B.Lessons From the PETM for Forests Worldwide
C.Climate Change:How Can We Face the Challenge
D.The Amazon's Future:What History Can Teach Us
