第二节
The next afternoon Jerry heard some good news:A new family would be moving into the
farmhouse soon.Jerry's grandma would arrive on Christmas Eve to celebrate with him.He
hoped that the family would come before his grandma came. Before long,a car came up the road
leading to the house, with butter sandwiches, cheese and chocolate.
The house came alive the next few days.Jerry enjoyed every single hour of them.
However, the day before Christmas when he was drinking hot chocolate with a satisfied smile at
the door of his home,he heard the discussion of the children of the family about what they might
get for Christmas. What?A cat?The smile froze on his face;his mouth fell wide open. After a
long while,he at last found his voice:"Hey!Whose Christmas miracle is this?"
附:听力原文
(Text 1)
M:I spend a few days waiting for the results of the check-up.To my relief,my father was cured
at last.
W:Would you mind my going to the hospital to see your father?
M:Well,he is now out of the hospital. The doctor told him to take a rest at home.
(Text 2)
W:I don't really like the food in the dining hall. The only reason why I sometimes buy food
there is that the lady there is so kind.
M:Yeah. She always gives me so much food. She is the most generous.
(Text 3)
M:What's wrong with Lily? She seems unhappy.Did she fail the chemistry test?Or she
dislikes her new head teacher?
W:Neither. She got negative comments because she didn't do good work.
(Text 4)
M:Mike seems like a good student.
W:He is certainly not so intelligent as George, but his grades are better than George's.
M:Yeah,he works much harder.
(Text 5)
W:Some people are meant to come and go from your lives quickly.Other friends may grow
with you as your life changes.
M:I couldn't agree with you more. One way to keep friendships of any level strong is to take
good care of them.
(Text 6)
M:Lucy,I heard that your English teacher is very strict, really?
W:Yeah, she is the strictest English teacher I have ever seen.
M:Does she often give tough comments?
W:She usually points out our mistakes or problems in front of the whole class. To be honest,I
sometimes feel quite hurt by her negative feedback. It makes me lose confidence in myself.
M:That sounds bad.
W:But I do understand my teacher's intention. She is very strict and demanding because she
wants us to be better learners.I really wish she could be less direct and more encouraging.
(Text 7)
M:Hi,Miss Brighton, how old were you when you started to write?
W:I wrote my first story when I was about seven. It was about a small dog.
M:Why did you choose to be an author?
W:Well.I was fond of writing as a little girl.Everyone is trying to find a way to achieve
happiness.Step one would be,without doubt, finding out what you love doing most.Step
two would be finding someone to pay you to do this.I consider myself very lucky indeed that
I'm able to support myself by writing.
M:Do you have any plans to write books for adults?
W:Maybe. But I never really imagine who my audience is while writing. The ideas come first.
So it really depends on the ideas that come to me next.
(Text 8)
W:It's unbelievable. You know,my pen friend is in China now.And she's gonna visit me this
weekend.I am looking forward to seeing her.
M:Really? How did you get to know her?I mean, how could you know a foreign friend?
W:We just started to know each other through Facebook.
M:Do you think it's a danger to talk with people you don't know?
W:Well,it depends. At first,we just discussed our hobbies and language study. Then we
found we both enjoy travel and sports. But we have different tastes in music and movies.
M:But I still couldn't talk with a person I don't know.
(Text 9)
W:I think the relationship with a sister would be very important because you would probably be
very close and tell her stuff you wouldn't tell other people.
M:Yes,that's very true.Even if I argue with my brother,we're still very close.But don't
you think grandparents have a big influence on your life, too?
W:I suppose so,but it depends on how often you see them.I didn't see mine very often but I
did learn a lot from them and they were very patient with me.
M:So were mine. What's your view on the relationship between father and son?
W:I'm not sure, but I imagine perhaps they would share hobbies together, like,er,well,
learning to drive or playing football together.
M:I suppose so.My father is much older than most fathers but I suppose it depends on your
personality too,and if you have things in common.
W:I see what you mean.If you get an inspirational teacher,he has a huge effect on your life,
too.I know somebody who became an actor because of the encouragement a teacher gave
him.
(Text 10)
I've read a couple of Graham's books and seen him on TV.I always say to my wife,"Oh
look,I used to teach him!"I remember Graham was very difficult before he came into my class.
I had heard stories about his bad behaviour.Once I caught him and his friends seeing who could
jump the farthest off the school stage! But when he got interested,he changed. The first day he
walked into my class,he was dragging his schoolbag behind him and looking bored, but as soon
as I set up my experience to show how the human stomach works using acid and an onion,he
gave me his full attention. He loved science! He was very bright and he had done very well in
science subjects. However,I have not done as well with all my students as I have with Graham.
I think it's important to understand that there's no such thing as a good or a bad student.Look
at Graham!Everyone is good at something and it's important to find out what that is for each
student. We teachers should have more time to make friends with all our students and really
understand them.

The next afternoon I met with the head of the agency,a very thin woman. She looked at

weight."Hearing her words,I became more ashamed of myself and nodded quietly.
As the late afternoon sun washed over her thin face and wasted body,I heard my inner voice

My husband and I just spent a week in Paris. Our aim was to see if we could live,in some
way, like real Parisians. So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor
apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the
hallway.
The place wasn't entirely authentic,though.Unlike a normal Parisian apartment,the
plumbing (worked. There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.Our building even
had a tiny lift with a female voice that said,"Ouverture des portes,in perfect French. That is
the only French phrase I mastered, and it's a shame I don't have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me.They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted
in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. The food is so
delicious that you don't need much of it to make you happy.French strawberries do not taste
like cardboard.Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
That's not the only reason the French eat less than we do.On our first morning in Paris,I
went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries.I bought a handful of
perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were
the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency ()You can tell this
by cafes'life.French cafes are always crowded. Not all the customers are tourists. When do
these people work? The French take their 35-hour workweek seriously-so seriously that some
labor unions recently struck a deal with a group of companies limiting the number of hours that
independent contractors can be on call.
28.Why did the author and her husband choose to rent a small apartment in Paris?
A.To save money on accommodation.
B.To experience life as local Parisians do.
C.Because they prefer small living spaces.
D.Because it was the only option available.
29.What does the author imply about French people's lifestyle compared to others?
A.They are lazy and untidy.
B.They work long hours every day.
C.They eat a lot but never gain weight.
D.They value quality over quantity in their food.
30.Why did the author mention the cost of the strawberries and melon?
A.To illustrate why French people eat less.
B.To show how expensive fruits are in France.
C.To express her disappointment with the prices.
D.To emphasize the superior quality of French produce.
31.What can be inferred about the French work culture from the passage?
A.It discourages overworking.
B.It promotes working in cafes.
C.It values efficiency over leisure time.
D.It allows labor unions to control all aspects of work.
D
The dog may be "man's best friend"but the sharp-eyed dolphin is one creature that we love
to love. They have even been known to perform for whale-watchers or swim playfully with the
boats of fishermen. The dolphin's ability to please humans has made it one of our favorites in
the animal kingdom.
"Like us,dolphins are great communicators,"says Jo Clark,Conservation Officer for the
Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. They are very social, and communicate through a
range of clicks, whistles and calls.Researchers say that each dolphin has its own special
whistle.
Almost all dolphins live in groups and work together to feed or drive away their enemies.
But there is one special kind of dolphin called the orca.Orcas live in family groups and this is the
reason why they have strong family bonds. They even have their own individual language dialect
and are known to pass down knowledge from one generation to the next.
Clark says,"There are many examples of dolphins forming partnerships with people. For
three generations,in Laguna,Brazil,bottle-nosed dolphins have been working with a group of
fishermen to catch fish. The dolphins drive the fish towards the fishermen's nets. They even
signal with a splash of their tails when the nets should be thrown.
In 2001,another group of fishermen from South Carolina told a story of how dolphins
protected humans from danger.Their boat sank 50 kilometers from the shore and they found
themselves surrounded by some dangerous tiger sharks.Immediately, dolphins arrived and
began driving the sharks away. They remained all night and the following day, protecting the
fishermen from any sharks that came near.
32.Why are dolphins considered one of the animals that humans love?
A.Because they are sociable animals.
B.Because they help fishermen catch fish.
C.Because they can perform and play with boats.
D.Because they can pass on knowledge to the next generation.
33.What does the underlined word "orca"in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A type of dolphin.
B.A fish that dolphins eat.
C.A place where dolphins live.
D.A marine conservation society.
34.What can a dolphin do according to Clark?
A.It can stop humans from danger.
B.It can help fishermen catch fish.
C.It can communicate with humans in its own dialect.
D.It can pass down possessions from one generation to the next.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.All marine animals are social.
B.Dolphins are dangerous to humans.
C.Dolphins have a unique communication system.
D.Dolphins form strong bonds with humans and each other.

When you are traveling by plane, there are some passengers you just don't want to have
next to you.
36
Perhaps you normally like them, but when you are sitting next to them on a plane it's a
different thing. They usually spend all the flight moving around and dropping their toys on the
floor, and when they're drinking their orange juice it ends up on your trousers. Then they
decide they want to play with you.37.
Conversation makers
You recognize this type as soon as you sit down. They immediately start talking about the
plane,or the weather,or they ask you a personal question. It's very difficult not to talk to these
people.38.
Nervous fliers
These are the people with white faces who sit down and immediately ask for something to
drink.Every five minutes they call a flight attendant to ask if there are any problems with the
plane.39.The best thing to do is to pretend to sleep.
Space invaders

too. They usually sit so that you can't move, with their arms and legs in your space.
A.Small kids
B.Careless parents
C.They also tell you about air disasters

everything my elder brother Tyson did,but no matter how hard I 42,I was always the
neglected one.My 43 just weren't made to run like his.I could never play football well.

career,but when my family moved,everything changed.Tyson left for 45,so I had to
start at a new school all by 46.This new start gave me an opportunity to redefine myself

Jerry,a little mouse blew his breath on the frosty window of the farmhouse and rubbed it to
see the outside. But nobody came.Maybe today he thought hopefully. It was only a few days
before Christmas and he was watching for a miracle ()
This farmhouse had been empty too long.It needed a family.Jerry's stomach made a
noise. He realized that he hadn't eaten anything since yesterday. He jumped from the
windowsill ()took a bag from his home and went next door to Farmer Tom's.
With a swift leap from the windowsill,Jerry grabbed his small bag and ran next door to
Farmer Tom's.The place had been a shelter for him until the farmer brought home a new wife
and a terrible companion-a cat. With careful steps,he entered the storage room where the
grain was kept, his heart pounding as he filled his bag with much-needed wheat.
Just as he was about to make his escape,a hot breath brushed against his ear, sending him
into a panic. His heart raced as he darted away, narrowly escaping the sharp claws of the hidden
cat.Jerry knew he had to be more alert from now on,for danger was in every corner, waiting
for him to let his guard down.
As he returned to his poor nest,Jerry's mind was filled with the hope that one day the
farmhouse would once again came alive. He longed for the sound of children's laughter and the
comforting voices of grown-ups.
