The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were then living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults (成人), and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother languages behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits (益处) to knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must ask others to help them communicate.
Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language speakers helps improve relationships between countries. They act as bridges that connect different nations, fostering mutual understanding and trust through effective communication. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.
The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silent.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The benefits of learning other languages. B. The reasons why people come to America.
C. The importance of learning English. D. How to learn another language.
32. The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to ________.
A. discuss the need for teaching a new language

D. show the problems of speaking only one language
33. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refers to “people who know ________.”
A. their mother language B. a new language
C. more than one language D. body language
34. According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can ________.
A. find a better job B. make more friends
C. better understand history D. communicate more independently
35. Based on the last paragraph, which of the following is the worst?
A. Not knowing another language. B. Forgetting one’s mother language.
C. Refusing to learn another language. D. Failing to communicate with others.

Even though the world has made great efforts to protect African elephants, many of them are still being killed for their ivory. At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 million African elephants walked around Africa. But today, their numbers have fallen to around 450,000. This is mainly caused by illegal (非法的) hunting for ivory. Need for ivory in markets, especially in Asia and Africa, continues to push the illegal trade. This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20,000 African elephants each year.
Ivory, also known as “white gold”, has long been regarded as precious. Because of its unusual look, people often use it to make expensive things, such as jewellery (珠宝) , musical instruments and art. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. That’s why many people are willing to pay high prices for ivory products.
However, no matter how much real ivory is sold for, it’s certainly not worth the harm to elephants. So some scientists are working hard on creating the same beauty of ivory with no killing.
Thaddäa Rath and her team at the University of Vienna have created the man-made ivory called “Digory”. It is made from synthetic resin (合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles (磷酸钙颗粒) . First, they use a 3D printer to make the shape. Then they color-match and stain (着色) it. Finally, they polish (抛光) it to make it look like real natural ivory. Although the chemical structure of Digory is completely different from that of the natural ivory, it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye.
Fritz Vollrath, a biologist from the UK, felt excited about the invention for the fact that Digory could save many elephants from risks. He said, “We hope that, by doing more research, Digory will soon be accepted and used worldwide. And I believe that technology like this will play an important role in wildlife protection.”
36. Why does the writer list some numbers in Paragraph 1?
A. To present the number of elephants in Africa.
B. To introduce the ivory markets in Asia and Africa.
C. To explain the reasons for the illegal trade of ivory.
D. To show the dangerous situation of African elephants.
37 What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. modern B. valuable C. beautiful D. traditional
38. What do we know about Digory from Paragraph 4?
a. Why Digory is invented. b. How Digory is created.
c. What Digory is made from. d. Whether Digory looks real.
A. abc B. acd C. bcd D. abd
39. Which of the following does Fritz Vollrath agree?
A. Digory will save all the elephants from risks.
B. It’s hard for the world to accept man-made ivory.
C. It will take long to make Digory used worldwide.
D. Technology will support the protection of wildlife.
40. Which is the right structure of the text? (①= Para. 1 ②= Para. 2…)
A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②/③/④⑤ C. ①②③④/⑤ D. ①/②③/④⑤
D
When ChatGPT came out, Olivia Lipkin, a copywriter in San Francisco, found herself with less and less work to do. Last April, she was fired with no explanation. She realized the reason when hearing managers talking about how using ChatGPT was at a lower cost than having a human writer. Eric Fein had worked in a writing company for ten years.
He became jobless last March because of ChatGPT. He said to his boss that ChatGPT couldn’t write with his level of creativity. His boss said he understood, but he would have to pay more to Fein than using ChatGPT.
AI systems like ChatGPT could replace hundreds of millions of jobs in the future. And for those who write social media posts and ads, the effect is already here. However, experts say that even the best AI systems can’t match the writing skills of a human. It doesn’t have a personal voice or style. Besides, it often gives the wrong answers.
Indeed, companies that have replaced human workers with ChatGPT have run into trouble. CNET, a technology news site, once used AI systems to write articles. The results, however, were full of mistakes. And the U. S. National Eating Disorders Association once replaced its helpline workers with robots. But it had to stop using the technology after the robots gave people harmful advice.
After being replaced by ChatGPT, Fein and Lipkin didn’t give up. Fein has decided to be an air-conditioning technician (技师), a job that AI can’t do. And Lipkin now works as a dog walker. She says, “People are looking for the cheapest solution, and that’s not a person—it’s a robot.”
41. Why did Lipkin and Fein lose their jobs?
A. There was less and less work for them to do.
B. ChatGPT was much more creative than them.
C. Cost savings were the companies’ top priority.
D. The companies thought their work was of low quality.
42. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. AI systems will replace all kinds of jobs. B. AI systems can write as well as human writers.
C. AI systems have a personal voice and style. D. AI systems still have a long way to go.
43. What can we know about ChatGPT?
A. It requires no corrections in writing. B. It may give wrong suggestions to users.
C. It can only be used to write articles. D. It has been widely used in every field.
44. Which of the following best describes Lipkin and Fein?
A. Positive and honest. B. Strong-minded and hard-working.
C. Patient and easy-going. D. Kind-hearted and smart.
45. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Will ChatGPT Replace Humans? B. Should Humans Trust ChatGPT?
C. Will ChatGPT Become Creative? D. Can ChatGPT Think by Itself?

How to Improve English Writing
First
Read as much as you can.
Choose books or articles with ________ themes.
Second
Know how to ________ words correctly.
Use word cards and ________ yourself whenever you are free.
Third
Improve your ________.
Always read your writing ________.
1. It’s ________ honor to talk with all of you here.
A. a B. an C. the
2. I have a cold and feel terrible, so I don’t feel like ________ anything.
A. eat B. to eat C. eating
3. —Did you go to Jim’s birthday party?
—No, I ________.
A. am not invited B. wasn’t invited C. didn’t invite
主语I和invite之间是被动关系,根据“Did you go...”
4. He ________ speak English with foreigners.
A. dares not B. dare not to C. doesn’t dare to
dare作情态动词时,否定形式为dare not,后接动词原形,无“dares not”表述;dare not to为错误表达,情态动词后不用to;dare作实义动词时,否定形式为don’t/doesn’t dare to,后接动词不定式。此处主语是He,实义动词的否定需用doesn’t dare to。故选C。
5. The room is so noisy that she has to speak louder to make herself ________.
A. hear B. hearing C. heard
根据“she has to speak louder to make herself...”
6. When you learn English, there is no need to ________ every word into Chinese.
A. translate B. divide C. imitate
【答案】A
根据“every word into Chinese”可知,此处指把单词翻译成中文,translate...into...“把……翻译成……”,所以应该用translate。故选A。
7. The headmaster asks us to speak English ________ possible.
A. as many as B. as more as C. as much as
as many as尽可能多的,修饰可数名词复数;as more as表述错误,as...as中间需用形容词或副词原级;as much as尽可能多,修饰不可数名词或动词短语。根据“speak English”可知,“说英语”是抽象动作,需用“as much as possible”修饰,此处“much”指代说英语的频率/程度。故选C。
8. This dress is made ________ silk and it is made ________ China.
A. in; of B. of; in C. of; on
【答案】B

37. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. modern B. valuable C. beautiful D. traditional
(①= Para. 1 ②= Para. 2…)
A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②/③/④⑤ C. ①②③④/⑤ D. ①/②③/④⑤

根据文章第一段“Even though the world has made great efforts to protect African elephants, many of them are still being killed for their ivory...This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20, 000 African elephants each year.”
根据文章第二段“Because of its unusual look, people often use it to make expensive things, such as jewellery (珠宝) , musical instruments and art. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. That’s why many people are willing to pay high prices for ivory products.”
根据文章第四段“It is made from synthetic resin (合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles (磷酸钙颗粒) . First, they use a 3D printer to make the shape. Then they color- match and stain (着色) it. Finally, they polish (抛光) it to make it look like real natural ivory. Although the chemical structure of Digory is completely different from that of the natural ivory, it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye.”

C 42. D 43. B 44. B 45. A

根据“Besides, it often gives the wrong answers.”以及“But it had to stop using the technology after the robots gave people harmful advice.”
根据“After being replaced by ChatGPT, Fein and Lipkin didn’t give up. Fein has decided to be an air-conditioning technician (技师), a job that AI can’t do. And Lipkin now works as a dog walker.”
故选A。
