The National Ballet of China’s original production, The Crane Calling, returned to the stage on Sept 24 at Beijing’s Tianqiao Theater, marking 1 10th anniversary of its premiere (首映) with a newly updated version. This work revisits the 2 (inspire) story of Xu Xiujuan (1964-87), a young woman who gave her life while trying to save cranes in a rainstorm.
Feng Ying, the director of the ballet piece, says, “ 3 this occasion, we approach the work with great respect for Xu Xiujuan, the ‘crane-protecting hero’ who sacrificed her life at the age of 23. This piece 4 (present) in a fresh new form. We 5 (adjust) it several times over the past 10 years, and now, with the original creative team and a new generation of artists, we bring this work to a new 6 (high).”
The performance opened with the dancers standing tall on stage, the male main character 7 (play) by the group’s lead dancer Ma Xiaodong and female by Yan Mengxuan. Behind them was a vast reed marsh (芦苇荡), where cranes moved gracefully and reeds swayed in the wetlands beneath a red sun, 8 (mirror) the hopes and dreams of youth. The concert featured top Chinese guqin performers from the Yushan Wu School-appearing alongside young players- 2 (present) 10 pieces that highlighted the school’s combination of tradition 3 modernity.
