Before 2021, the typically cool Pacific Northwest and western Canada seemed highly unlikely to get a killer heat wave, but they did. Many in North Carolina figured that hurricanes were a coastal problem until Helene blew in last year. After the deadly flood in central Texas in 1987, some thought they could handle the worst flooding in the future. Then came this month’s terrible flash flood that killed more than 179 people.
Climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and intense, according to climate data. But experts warn that people and governments are generally living in the past and haven’t accepted that extreme weather is becoming a new norm
“There’s plenty of evidence that we start to experience things that just basically never happened before,” Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said" Unfortunately, when these risks are coming right at us like a fast-moving train, we just stand in the tracks. Then, all of a sudden, ‘Boom’”
“Time and again after catastrophic storms and wildfires, people whose lives were runed said they didn’t think they could happen to them again. It’s sort of a psychological mechanism (心理机制) to protect themselves from the terrible stress caused by those disasters But with extreme weather events happening more frequently and in more places, this mindset can prevent them from making proper preparations,” said Kim Klockow McClain, an extreme weather social scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research who studies communicating disaster warnings and risk. “The message needs to be, ‘If you’ re used to some degree of flooding, look at what happened in Texas and realize that this is a shifting baseline.’”
As for future disasters, the country needs to figure out and plan for the worst case instead of looking to the past. It’s obvious that we’ re living into a future where what used to be extreme becomes average, typical, and what used to never occur in a human lifetime or maybe even in a thousand years becomes the new extreme.
24. What message does the author want to convey in the first two paragraphs?
A. It is very difficult to predict natural disasters. B. It is dangerous to take the new situation lightly.
C Cool areas are also affected by climate change. D. Extreme events used to occur more frequently
25. How does Michael Oppenheimer most probably feel about the current situation?
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
26. How do the survivors react to similar future disasters, according to paragraph 4?
A. They usually appear to be too optimistic B. They are willing to seek professional advice.
C. They make great efforts to be ready for them. D. They tend to cooperate with the governments.
27. What does the author call on the governments and people to do?
A. Learn from the past B. Get prepared for the worst.
C. Move to safer places. D. Give in to the extreme climate.

To know body language better, Christina Stach, a 25-year-old healthcare provider, read What Everybody Is Saying by Joe Navarro. “It changed how I communicated with everyone,” she says. While approximately 80% of our interactions with each other are nonverbal — from birth, our body language sends out clues to what we’re thinking, and Stach says, “We can learn to exercise control over it.”
Becoming aware of her own body language, the physician recognized her preferred way of sitting with her arms and legs crossed. While it was comfortable for her, patients considered it discomfort with them. She found the same to be true with eye contact. “I don’t make much eye contact with people because it makes me uncomfortable,” Stach says, “but it makes others think I’m inattentive.”
Armed with the knowledge, she began uncrossing her arms and legs and making more eye contact when in conversation, “Using positive body language helps strengthen patient interactions, and once these habits become natural, you may notice your patients are more receptive to your advice,” she says.
“Talking with patients at eye level is important,” Stach says. “It shows them that I’m here to listen to what they have to say and to make joint decisions about their healthcare.” She recommends that physicians lower their eye level as much as possible by sitting on a low chair facing their patient while the patient remains seated on the exam table.
Eye contact is another important element. “If you’re typing notes into your computer without looking at your patients — even if you are listening and can say everything they said, your body says you aren’t listening,” Stach says. “And you no longer have a closed space of attention with each other.”
Anyway, body language can send a message of care and trust, “In medicine, we’re often in our patient’s face during a medical exam, but when talking with them, being too close may be intrusive, especially in Western cultures where we have broader personal body comfortable distance,” Stach notes. “But in Eastern cultures that distance is much narrower. So, when interacting with people from these cultures, stepping back is seen as offensive(冒犯的) — that’s something to keep in mind.”
28. How did Christina Stach get better at using body language?
A. By keeping practicing it in her family. B. By reading a related book.
C. By learning a lot from professionals. D. By communicating with patients.
29. Why did Christina Stach change her sitting posture and eye contact?
A. To achieve better care results. B. To feel more personally comfortable.
C. To show her professional skills. D. To enhance her specialized knowledge.
30. What is Christina Stach’s suggestion for physicians talking with patients?
A. Avoiding frequent eye contact. B. Making decisions for the patients.
C. Repeating everything the patients said. D. Positioning themselves on lowered seats.
31. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Relaxing. B. Comfortable. C. Disturbing. D. Formal.
D
A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “most powerful” language of an area, but is still learned by children in their homes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending on the surrounding social context. English, for example, is often a primary language, but could technically be a heritage language if someone’s English-speaking parents moved from, say, the United Kingdom to Japan
Heritage languages can be someone’s native language, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language or languages a person learns when they’re very young while heritage languages can be determined by a broad range of social and cultural factors. Usually, people speak their native language very well. Someone’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, however. Some people may master it well because they learned it a lot when they were children, while others may speak it but not read it, and still others may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has over 56 million Spanish speakers, and a large part of those are heritage learners of the language. A research found that the percentage of people who report speaking Spanish “well” drops from 91 to 82 for first-and second-generation immigrants (移民). While that might seem small, it gets much more obvious after that, with third-and fourth-generation immigrants dropping to 47 percent.
There are a couple of reasons why heritage languages — and Spanish in particular — tends to drop off from generation to generation. The first one is that the heritage language is less important to get around in society. When a person needs the majority language to go to school, get a job and interact with most people around them, it’s not surprising that the heritage language might seem less important. Another reason is some parents encourage their children not to use their heritage language. It’s unfortunate but true that speaking another language is still a cause for discrimination (歧视) today.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting from generation to generation, but it’s not only a story of decline (衰弱). There are countless people in the world who go out of their way to learn their heritage languages — some learn the heritage language later in life — and help others to do the same. If you’ve ever thought about reconnecting with a heritage language, it’s never too late to get started. There’s no time like the present.
32. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By mentioning an expert. B. By explaining a term (术语).
C. By describing a scene. D. By providing figures.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The importance of learning heritage languages when little.
B. The variations in people’s abilities to speak heritage languages.
C. The differences between heritage languages and native languages.
D. The similarities between the broad range of social and cultural factors.
34. What is one reason for the drop of Heritage languages in the US?
A. Appearance discrimination B. Generation gap.
C. Varying cultures. D. Losing popularity.
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Parents play a key role in protecting heritage languages.
B. Heritage languages’ difficult time will end in the near future.
C. Efforts have been made towards the heritage languages’ survival.
D. Some people consider it too late to bring heritage languages back to life.

Along with his teammates—Mark, Jack and Alex, he had trained intensively for weeks, nurturing high hopes of winning the gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric as the runners took their positions. The starting gun fired, and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track. He smoothly handed the baton(接力棒)to Jack. Jack sprinted(冲刺)ahead with all his might, skillfully maintaining their lead. Then, it was Tim’s turn. As Jack approached at top speed, Tim reached out eagerly for the baton. But in his over-enthusiasm, he miscalculated the distance, and to his horror, the baton dropped to the ground. Time seemed to stand still as Tim stared at the baton, his heart pounding.
He quickly snatched it up and dashed forward, but the precious seconds lost had put them behind the other teams. Alex did his absolute best in the final leg, pushing himself to the limit, but they ultimately crossed the finish line in fourth place, narrowly missing out on the medals.
The disappointment on the team’s faces was obvious. Tim felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his shoulders. He couldn’t bring himself to look at his teammates, consumed by guilt. He replayed the moment of the dropped baton over and over in his mind, each time wishing he could turn back the clock. Mark, usually the most talkative, was silent, his eyes downcast(低垂的). Jack shook his head in frustration, muttering something under his breath. Alex just looked at the ground, his shoulders low. Without a word, they started walking back to the changing room, leaving Tim alone on the track, filled with self-blame.

Persephone guides visitors to the first three of eight stops along the walkway. It can do two more stops, but it is too slow for the tour. Kartalis is considering ways to increase its speed. Evdokia Karafera is a human guide who partners with Persephone. “It’s helpful, because it speaks many languages,” she said. “There’s just a little delay in the touring.” She added, “Most find it fascinating, especially the children, and find it interesting that it speaks many languages.” Karafera noted, however, that human tour guides must remain part of the operation. “Robots, at some point in the future, will take over many jobs,” she said. “But I believe they cannot replace humans everywhere.”

We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the nightclubs.
C. Cool areas are also affected by climate change.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A 27. B

C
30 What is Christina Stach’s suggestion for physicians talking with patients?
A. Avoiding frequent eye contact. B. Making decisions for the patients.
C. Repeating everything the patients said. D. Positioning themselves on lowered seats.
31. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Relaxing. B. Comfortable. C. Disturbing. D. Formal.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. C

根据第一段中“To know body language better, Christina Stach, a 25-year-old healthcare provider, read What Everybody Is Saying by Joe Navarro. “It changed how I communicated with everyone,” she says.(为了更好地了解肢体语言,25岁的医疗服务提供者克里斯蒂娜·斯塔赫阅读了乔·纳瓦罗的《每个人都在说什么》。“这改变了我与大家沟通的方式,”她说)”可知,克里斯蒂娜·斯塔赫是通过阅读一本相关的书来更好地使用肢体语言的。故选B项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Becoming aware of her own body language, the physician recognized her preferred way of sitting with her arms and legs crossed. While it was comfortable for her, patients considered it discomfort with them. She found the same to be true with eye contact.(这位医生意识到自己的肢体语言后,发现习惯性的交叉手臂和双腿的坐姿虽然令自己舒适,却让患者感到不安。她在眼神交流方面也发现了类似问题)”和第三段“Armed with the knowledge, she began uncrossing her arms and legs and making more eye contact when in conversation, “Using positive body language helps strengthen patient interactions, and once these habits become natural, you may notice your patients are more receptive to your advice,” she says.(掌握这一认知后,她在交谈时开始有意识地舒展四肢并增加眼神交流。“运用积极的肢体语言能有效增进医患互动,一旦这些习惯成为自然,你会发现患者更愿意接受你的建议,”她这样说道。)”可推知,克里斯蒂娜·斯塔赫改变坐姿和眼神交流是为了达到更好的护理效果。故选A项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“She recommends that physicians lower their eye level as much as possible by sitting on a low chair facing their patient while the patient remains seated on the exam table. (她建议医生尽可能降低视线高度,坐在低椅子上面对病人,而病人则坐在检查台上)”可知,克里斯蒂娜·斯塔赫建议医生与病人交谈时坐在较低的座位上。故选D项。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“but when talking with them, being too close may be intrusive, especially in Western cultures where we have broader personal body comfortable distance. (但与他们交谈时,靠得太近可能会intrusive,尤其是在西方文化中,在那里我们对个人身体舒适距离的要求更为宽泛)”可知,在西方文化中,人们的个人身体舒适距离更宽泛,所以在与他们交谈时,过于亲密可能会让人感到不舒服,由此可推知,“intrusive”意为“打扰的,令人不适的”,与C项“Disturbing”意思相近。故选C项。
A By mentioning an expert.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. C

The school sports meeting was in full swing. The most anticipated event, the 4x100-meter relay race, was about to start. Tim, a passionate and athletic student, was part of his class’s relay team. Along with his teammates—Mark, Jack and Alex, he had trained intensively for weeks, nurturing high hopes of winning the gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric as the runners took their positions. The starting gun fired and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track.

【答案】
Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the failure. As he sat on the edge of the track, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He thought about all the hard work and dedication they had put into training, and how it had all seemed to be in vain because of his one moment of carelessness. He wondered if his teammates would ever forgive him, and if he would ever be able to make up for what he had done.
Just then, Mark, Jack, and Alex appeared. They walked up to Tim and sat down beside him. Mark placed a comforting hand on Tim’s shoulder and said, “Hey, it’s not your fault. These things happen. We’re a team, and we all make mistakes.” Jack nodded in agreement, adding, “We didn’t lose because of you. We lost because we didn’t work together well enough in that moment. Let’s learn from this and come back stronger next time.” Alex smiled and patted Tim on the back, saying, “We’re still proud of you, and we know you’ll do better next time. We’re in this together.”
