When you hit middle age, there are some universal truths you begin to notice and accept, and that
goes double when you're travelling with your parents. You really are turning into your mother (or father)
..and maybe that is not such a terrible thing.I recently spent six days visiting my parents in their
winter snowbird home just outside of Tampa,Florida.Mom and Dad were delighted in the tour guide role
here in this middle ground, not our Indiana hometown and not British Columbia, where I've been living
with my kids for years.
It felt strange at first,me being a "kid"again at age 50.It was a rare window when I wasn't caring
for my own kids and my parents, who were still healthy and mobile and didn't yet need my care.I could
relax.I could play.Without any responsibilities or distractions,I could savor(尽情享受)just being a
daughter.
On this trip,I realized just how much I see myself in my parents.I was a little surprised to realize
that this fact didn't make me roll my eyes and make an "I'm turning into my mother"joke.Instead,I
found myself smiling and embracing turning into my mother and father, because that's exactly who I've
always been.
Travelling with my aging parents,I not only realized how lucky I am,but also knew this could be
our last trip together, just the three of us.I couldn't help but reflect on how delicate life is and how
precious these moments of being together are.My parents are still together,in good health, and have
mobility.I can't think of anyone at my age who is in the same situation with their parents.
On the drive to the airport,Dad launched into his usual sort of closing paragraph that he does at the
end of every visit. He mentioned the highlights of the week and asked about everyone else's favorite

memories from our time together. Then he shifted to what we wanted to do the next time.I smiled,
realizing I do this closing paragraph too, when I'm saying goodbye to my girls.
24.What does the underlined word "that"in paragraph I refer to?
A.Travelling with parents at middle age.
B.Getting a deeper understanding of life.
C.Turning into a copy of one's parents.
D.Finding more time to accompany parents.
25.Why did the author describe the trip as a rare window?
A.Because there was little time left for her aging parents.
B.Because it was a period to free herself of worries.
C.Because it was a good chance to reflect on herself.
D.Because it offered a valuable memory.
26.What conclusion does the author try to draw while travelling with her parents?
A.We are always kids in our parents'eyes.
B.Parents'present situation mirrors our future.
C.Be grateful and treasure the time with parents.
D.A closing speech to a child is a must for every parent.
27.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To share her reflection.
B.To introduce a trip.
C.To remember her parents.
D.To urge care for parents.
Over the past few months,I've been invited to speak with well-known writers, musicians and film
producers regarding my recent book,Extraterrestrial.Prior to these conversations,I was on the receiving
(and admiring)end of their artistic works, but now they were curious about my own research as a
scientist. The reverse led me to recognize the similarities between innovation in the arts and the
sciences.
In sciences and arts alike, creativity appears magically as an unpredictable fountain of inspiration
from the subconscious ()Its unexpected content breaks routines within traditional thinking. It
delivers something new that is distinct from common practices, often taking people out of their comfort
zone because it is ahead of its time.As a result, many innovators are laughed at and denied the
recognition they deserve when they need it the most.
There are many examples of such circumstances. In 1933 Fritz Zwicky inferred the existence of
"dark matter",but it took four decades for this concept to gain recognition within the astronomy
community.Vincent van Gogh was considered a madman and a failure throughout his life.Today, his
paintings are among the most expensive ever sold, though.
Typically, life offers two ways of acquiring objects. One is by collecting available items, and the
other is by creating things that never existed before.Whereas most items on the shelves of supermarkets
are mass-produced,products that are newly created by artists or scientists are originally unique.Just like
aging wine,a product of creative work acquires quality over time.It is colored by the response of the
audience as well as by imitations. The initial circumstances are a reminder of an admirable baby.It is
fascinating for a scientist or an artist to watch the interaction of their creation with the world, just as it is
for parents to watch their children.

Using hypodermic needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. The past
hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged.
Although now available in a variety of different sizes,it remains a hollow ()pointy tube. With
luck, that may soon change.Researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the passage of
needles into the skin. Many have been inspired by nature.
An obvious source of ideas has been mosquitoes, which manage to take their blood meals almost
painlessly. One reason is that the insects release anaesthetic (chemicals when they first
puncture (the skin. But another has something to do with the shape and action of their
mouthparts.
The point of a mosquito's mouthparts is serrated(锯齿状的)and softer at its tip.The insect
stretches the skin of its target before biting, and shakes its mouthparts quickly as it pushes it in.All of
this helps to reduce the force needed to puncture the skin. One paper, published in 2020 by a group of
researchers in America and China, found that a mosquito-inspired needle required 27%less force than
an ordinary one.And less puncture force means less pain.
Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies
)A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020,found that the lower puncture
force led to less movement of the sampling area, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the
area,rather than missing the target.
For now, such devices remain restricted to labs. But there is a big market for better needles.
According to the World Health Organization, around 16bn injections were given in 2018.With one
person in four saying they suffer from trypanophobia,or a fear of needles, the savings on stickers and
sweets for the brave souls who roll up their sleeves would be considerable.
32.Which contributes to mosquitoes'getting blood without causing pain?
A.The sound they make before biting.
B.The special shape of their mouthparts.
C.The high speed of their action.
D.The small size of their mouthparts.

Waking up at dawn and going for a run might feel awful when you start trying to make it a habit.
Weaving a significant new activity such as this into your regular routine obviously takes determination and
time.36
One popular idea suggests that it takes 21 days to solidify a habit.People tend to feel extra
motivated to start a new habit or kick an old one.37 Yet every January 21 very few people can boast
that they have kept their resolutions.
Everyone has a unique habit-building timeline.38 Experts suggest various individualized ways
to practice frequently, which eventually turn a task into an unconscious habit.
39 Teaching yourself a completely new skill or process obviously takes longer than remembering
to drink more water in the morning.A 2015 study found that new gym-goers had to exercise at least four
times a week for six weeks in order to develop an exercise habit. The results showed that creating a
handwashing habit took a few weeks.40 Anyway, handwashing is less complex and offers more
opportunities to practice.
The researchers also suggested that habit formation depends on the effort that a person puts into
practicing an activity and on the presence of environmental cues that would remind them to carry out the
behavior.
A.The type of activity is also a factor.
B.The strategies of activity impact the way.
C.People want to form a habit of exercising regularly.
D.But how much time is really needed to make that habit stick?
E.It might sound easily reachable to make a resolution on New Year's Day.
F.By comparison,it took half a year for people to develop an exercise habit.
G.However long it is for any individual, repetition is the key to making it work.

I have an older brother who suffers from cerebral palsy ()For as long as I can remember, his
struggles with basic movements and speech caused me a deep sense of embarrassment.I was afraid of the
stares and the whispered questions from others,so I kept my distance, thinking it would protect me from their
judgment. This avoidance became a habit,a way to protect myself from the discomfort I felt over something I
didn't fully understand.Eventually,it became a barrier I built not around my heart, but around my life.
Even when I kept my distance,my brother would often offer me warm smiles, providing comfort and
help during my difficult moments. There were times when I directed my frustrations towards him,
perhaps because he was an easy target or because I hated his existence. His reactions, however, often
took the form of silent understanding. He wouldn't demand explanations for my behavior.Instead,he
might reach out with a gentle gesture-a touch,a smile,or simply his presence-reminding me that,
despite my unnecessary outbursts,I was not alone.
The more he cared about me,the more I hated him.I believed he brought me shame, disgrace, and
embarrassment. How I wished to stay away from him!But I had to choose a university in our city in order
to see my ill mother when convenient. My brother, however, would prepare meals and have them
delivered to my school, each time attaching a note filled with concern, asking why I hadn't come home,
if I was unwell,or if something was wrong. After my graduation and the loss of my mother,I decided to
distance myself from my city and, more significantly, from my brother,to seek a fresh start in a different city.
