Fahrenheit)."This winter was really cold,so we had to live in -60 degrees Celsius for a while,"said
Aleksey."If it were not for the daily need to go out, people would prefer to stay at home all the time,
drink hot tea and wait for spring. In winter, life practically stops,a dense fog during severe frosts
obscures the sunlight for several weeks or months.
However, even despite that,Aleksey welcomes people to visit Yakutia,"You will never forget this
trip in your life.I promise you.

Independent will is what really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make
decisions and choices and to act in accordance with them.It is the ability to act rather than to be acted
upon.
The human will is an amazing thing.Time after time,it has won against unbelievable difficulties.
The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic evidence to the value and the power of the independent
will. But as we examine it in the context of effective self-management,we realize it's usually not the
dramatic,the visible,and the once-in-a-lifetime effort that brings enduring success.Empowerment
comes from learning how to use independent will in the decisions we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by
our personal integrity.Integrity is,fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It's our ability to
make and keep commitments to ourselves-to "walk our talk".It's honor with self,a fundamental part
of the character ethic, and the essence of active growth.
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what "first things"are,
it is management that puts them first,day-by-day,moment-by-moment.Management is discipline,
carrying it out.
Discipline stems from disciple )-disciple to a philosophy, disciple to a set of principles,
disciple to a set of values, and disciple to an ultimate purpose. In other words,if you are an effective
manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within;it is a function of your independent will. You
are a disciple,a follower,of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the
integrity,to place your feelings, your urges, and your moods after those values.
That placement requires a purpose,a mission. It also requires independent will, the power to do
something when you don't want to do it,to be a function of your values rather than a function of the urge
or desire of any given moment. It's the power to act with integrity to your first creation.
28.What is the author's purpose in mentioning "the Helen Kellers"in paragraph 2?
A.To explain a reason.
B.To highlight a point.
C.To give a definition.
D.To make a prediction.
29.What do the underlined words "walk our talk"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Put words into deeds.
B.Display confidence.
C.Stop talking big.
D.Strike a balance.
30.To achieve effective self-management,what will the author probably recommend?
A.Sticking to one's own values.
B.Undertaking more missions.
C.Seeking external support.
D.Following one's desires.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Road to Effective Management
B.The Secret Behind Self-Discipline
C.The Magic of Personal Integrity
D.The Power of Independent Will

Surprising new research from Auckland University of Technology (AUT),New Zealand contradicts
the commonly held view that surfers are folks only focused on their own fun.Instead, they often play an
important role in saving lives. The research reveals that these thrill seekers selflessly save people they
see struggling in the ocean as swimmers or after boating incidents, and so actually reduce deaths from
drowning(溺水),playing a key role in making beaches safer..
According to the World Health Organization,an estimated 236,000 people drown worldwide each
year, with drowning the third leading cause of unintentional death.
However, according to a survey,at the heart of the research,life-saving acts of heroism by surfers
who save others in difficulty in the ocean waters around them, are surprisingly common. In fact, based
on the sample of 418 surfers, respondents reportedly rescue an average of three people drowning or
struggling in the water over the course of their lives, and some even report taking part in 10 to 20
rescues. This makes surfers the under-recognized guardians of the beach rather than the self-centered
images shown in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High,or Point Break.
In addition, the survey found that in almost 90 percent of rescues, people aided by the responding
surfers required no further treatment after the incident, making their help unlikely to be reported and so
recorded. As one of the survey's co-authors,Jamie Mead says,"We need to get surfers the recognition
they deserve and do more research to accurately quantify(用数量表述)how many rescues they're
actually doing.”
Since this research was published, there has been a growing interest in the training of surfers in life-
saving skills.Sonia Keeper,an experienced surfer and instructor, explains that the insights provided by
the survey have motivated surfing organizations to expand their reach and connect with an even broader
community of surfers..“If life-saving skills are rolled out(正式推出)to the broader coastal surfer
communities around the world, this preparation can help ensure that a good day at the beach doesn't turn
into a sad one,"she adds.
32.What is the typical impression of surfers according to the text?
A.They have an interest in saving lives.
B.They are self-centered pleasure seekers.
C.They are the spotlights of most beaches.
D.They seldom witness drowning incidents.
33.What does the survey find?
A.People at the beaches speak highly of surfers.
B.Surfers are experienced in treating the drowned.
C.Surfers have saved many people from drowning.
D.People are in need of more recognized guardians.
34.What is the function of the last paragraph?
A.To emphasize the popularity of a new type of sport.
B.To prove the benefits of taking surfing training.
C.To tell the necessity of surfing organizations.
D.To show the research's societal significance.
35.Why does the author write the text?
A.To recognize surfers'crucial role in beach safety.
B.To promote much wider acceptance of surfing.
C.To criticize people's wrong view on surfers.
D.To appeal for helping each other at beaches.

Everyone knows that early to bed and early to rise is good for your health.Having maintained
enough sleep, people can keep themselves refreshed and dynamic.36 Here are some steps to take
to become a morning person on a freezing day.
Seek out as much natural light as possible.37 When you wake up,go outside for a relaxed
walk around the block,or sit out back while you have a cup of coffee. To avoid being in a sleep state all
along, you'd better rethink the black-out curtains you might use to make a very dark sleeping
environment.
38 If you fly straight into getting up at your desired time every day, you'll feel tired during the
transition within a few weeks. For some people, those first few days of exhaustion from switching to a
new schedule aren't safe and hard to bear.In that case, gradually ease into the early-bird life. They are
supposed to shift half an hour, wait a few days, shift another half an hour, wait a few days, and then
shift another half an hour.39
De-stress and relax in the evenings.A consistent bedtime isn't as crucial as sticking to the same
wake-up time every day,but it's still important to make sure you're getting enough sleep.40 So
you'll probably need to inch your bedtime forward as you transition to a new schedule.Start at least an
hour before you hit the bed and cut back on stuff related to daily life.
With all these tips, you're not dreading it if you think of getting up early on a chilly winter.
A.Cultivate the habit gradually.
B.That's a little easier for people to tolerate.
C.The sun is the driver of our internal clock.
D.Get rid of the previous sleep patterns instantly.
E.Therefore, developing a healthy sleeping habit is of great significance.
F.Without sufficient hours of sleep, the mind and body can't properly recharge.
G.However,it usually takes a lot of willpower to get out of bed early on a winter's day.

One day in the 1990s,I was helping my brother move from a teaching job after college. He was
driving his little pickup truck pulling a trailer (and I was driving my old little Ford station car,
packed with his things.
It was a Sunday.I was driving along.All of a sudden,my car just died.No warning,nothing.I
stopped at the side of a country highway and waited for my brother to realize I wasn't behind him anymore
and turn around. After about 20 minutes,he did return to find me.However, neither of us knew much
about cars. After waiting for what seemed to be a century,a man, introducing himself as Jerry, came out
of nowhere, took one look at the engine and said,"Timing belt."
We had asked about getting the car pulled 30 miles to the closest large town on the phone, only to
find that it was going to be an expensive repair, even if the engine was OK.Just at this moment,Jerry
saw the difficult situation. He saw two poor kids in their early 20s struggling with life, and he said,
"Well,it's Sunday.Nothing's going to be open.I tell you what I will do.My next-door neighbor is a
repairman.Let's push the car down to his repair shop and we'll see what we can do.
So we did exactly as Jerry told us.Jerry's neighbor called his friend at the auto parts store, which
was closed on Sunday. He did a favor and got the parts needed, driving them 30 miles out to the repair
shop. And we sat around, telling our stories on the way while the car was being fixed.
The repairman's son,a kid of about 9 or 10,was hanging around.After some chatting,we learned
that he was extremely bored as no one played with him.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The boy badly desired someone to help build a treehouse in the woods.
When we went back to the repair shop, the car had been all fixed.
