I switched to a flip phone. It vastly improved my life.I felt empty and frustrated at how much time
I spent on my smartphone. So I spent the last five years steadily stripping my phone down to the basics.
Social media was the first to go,then email, then news apps, and then even Internet browsers.
I long considered switching to a flip phone, but I always found an excuse to stay.Ultimately it was
two of my students,15-and 18-year-old sisters, who pushed me over the edge.Word spread around
school that they had bought flip phones. If they were brave enough to take the plunge,I could, too.I
spent $9 on a flip phone, plus $120 for a year of unlimited talk and text on a new number. For the last
five months,I haven't carried a smartphone with me,just my flip phone.
This is the charming, romantic side of owning a flip phone:more conversations, more eye contact,
more connection. The separation between work and life is much more noticeable.I don't overthink work
emails all day, since I no longer carry my work email in my pocket.I am living more like my creative,
curious,phone-free children.
This all sounds wonderful because it is wonderful. And now it's confession time:I still have my
smartphone. As it turns out,our addiction to smartphones is not just on an individual level.Intentionally
or not,we have built structures that depend upon smartphone access, making it an essential feature of
modern life. While most of the flip phone inconveniences are charming, some of them are so frustrating
that they make you want to pull your hair out.
Despite that,I will continue to use a flip phone as my primary phone so I don't have to carry a
smartphone with me.And I will continue to evangelize for it.I hope many others get flip phones. We
will all be better for it.If nothing else,it'll be nice to have more people to talk to in the grocery line.

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has become a lot more common in recent decades. Some
even consider myopia an epidemic ()But what causes myopia and what reduces it?
While having two myopic parents does mean you're more likely to be nearsighted, there's no single
myopia gene. That means the causes of myopia are more behavioral than genetic.
Scientists have learned a great deal about the progression of myopia by studying visual development
in baby chickens. They do so by putting little hats on baby chickens.Lenses (on the face of the
hats cover the chicks'eyes and are adjusted to affect how much they see.
Just like in humans,if visual input is wrong,a chick's eyes grow too large, resulting in myopia.
And it's progressive.Blur (leads to eye growth, which causes more blur, which makes the eye
grow even larger,and so on.
Two recent studies featuring extensive surveys of children and their parents provide strong support
for the idea that an important driver of the increase in myopia is that people are spending more time
focusing on objects immediately in front of our eyes, whether a screen,a book or a drawing pad.
Other research has shown that this unnatural eye growth can be interrupted by sunlight.A 2022
study, for example, found that myopia rates were more than four times greater for children who didn't
spend much time outdoors-say,once or twice a week-compared with those who were outside daily. At
the same time, kids who spent more than three hours a day while not at school reading or looking at a
screen closely were four times more likely to have myopia than those who spent an hour or less doing so.
Fortunately, just a few minutes a day with glasses that correct blur stops the progression of myopia,
which is why early vision testing and vision correction are important to limit the development of myopia.
28.What can we learn from the study on baby chickens?
A.Myopia in chicks is not progressive.
B.Myopia is mainly caused by genetic factors.
C.Visual input affects the growth of a chick's eyes.
D.Lenses can prevent chicks from developing myopia.

Hurricane Helene may have already hit the southeast, but its deadly aftermath could last a decade
or more.
Tropical cyclones, which include hurricanes like Helene and other whirling storms, boost local
death rates for up to 15 years after whipping (along US coastlines, scientists reported on October
2 in Nature. Each storm may indirectly cause between 7,000 and 11,000 deaths, estimate University of
California,Berkeley environmental economist Rachel Young and Stanford University economist Solomon
Hsiang.
That's a Mount Everest of an estimate compared to 24-the official number of the average deaths
released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The results suggest that "hurricanes
and tropical storms are a much greater public health concern than anyone previously thought,"Young
says.
Using a statistical model,Young and Hsiang analyzed the impact of all 501 tropical cyclones that hit
the contiguous United States from 1930 to 2015.They measured changes in mortality (for up
to 20 years after each of these storms.Their analysis suggests that an individual hurricane may indirectly
lead to thousands of lives lost. And taken together, the storms could have caused as many as 5 percent of
all deaths over that time period.
Young and Hsiang don't know all the ways hurricanes may result in mortality, but they have some
ideas. It's possible that the stress of surviving such a storm,or the pollution left in the wake of
destruction, harms people's health or maybe local governments have less money to spend on health care
after rebuilding damaged infrastructure(基a础设施).“It could be some combination of these and other
factors,Young says. She's interested in digging into what's going on.
In the meantime,Young thinks her team's work highlights the need for new disaster response
policies-ones aimed at dealing with the long-term impact of hurricanes."We really pull together after
these disasters to help people immediately in the aftermath,"she says."But we need to be thinking
about these folks long after those initial responses are over.

A.Psychological stress after a hurricane.
B.Environmental pollution left behind.

Paula was a cheerful girl who enjoyed exploring the world around her.She slipped into her
grandfather's attic (at one time and found a kite in the corner. It was made by his grandfather
when he was a child, and he claimed it belonged to Paula.
One day,the wind whispered promises of a good flying day.Paula could hardly contain her
excitement when grandfather agreed to fly the kite with her.She grabbed the kite and dashed towards the
open field nearby, her heart pounding with anticipation.
However,as soon as she started running, the kite kept getting tangled (up in its own string!
She tried pulling it apart with no luck."This isn't how I imagined this would go,she said to herself.
Then her grandfather noticed how upset Paula was feeling and he stepped in to help.He showed her how
to hold onto the handle while he worked on untying the whole string."Don't worry,Paula,he said.
"Flying kites can be tricky sometimes, but it's also about learning and having fun."Encouraged by her
grandfather's words,Paula decided to keep trying again.
At first,it didn't seem like things were getting any better-every time she threw the kite into the
air,it would just drop back down onto the ground.Paula tried again and again, feeling much more
confident. She carefully held onto the handle and threw her kite into the air...and this time it flew! The
string slid through her fingers smoothly now! From that day on,all activities gave way to kite flying.
For Paula, days spent flying kites was not just about the joy of flying, but also about the stories told
