In the age of AI,worries about its impact on the environment are snowballing. For example, asking
Chat GPT a question usesten times more energy than an old-fashioned search. The development of AI has
also caused a big increase in greenhouse-gas emissions ()Google's emissions went up nearly 50%
from 2019 to 2023.However,these concems might be overstated. In fact,AI may be less energy-hungry
than many people assume.
第4页共8页
The Intemational Energy Agency (IEA)predicts that the electricityused by data centres could become
three times as much within five years. But at present, the 1.5%of global electricity consumption relatedto
data centres mainly comes from things like streaming, social media and online shopping. Moreover, some
of AI's electricity use willhelp with greening the economy.AI is alreadyhelping improve the efficiency of
electrical grids ()cut fuel use in shipping and spot invisible leaks of greenhouse gas.
Policymakers and industry leaders face the task of maximizing AI's advantages while minimizing its
climate effects. The best way would be for govemments to set a proper price for cabon and let the market
operate. But because a global carbon price remains a distant dream, focsing on other three measures are
more down-to-earth.
The first is more openness.Starting in August 2026,the EU will require some AI developersto report
how much energy they use in detail. That approach should be copied elsewhere.A second is to rethink how
data centers operate. The IEA notes that being able to shift workloads between different data centers at
different times could reduce stress and help balance energy grids.Third, technology companies must keep
their promises about protecting the environment instead of depending on buying renewable-energy credits
Committing moreto such approacheswouldhelp transform AI from climate suspect to climate hero.
32.What is the main concern about AI?
A.Its inabilitytoreduce emissions.
B.Its impact on social development.
C.Itshigh-level energy consumption.
D.Its shock on old-fashioned search
33.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.AI's environmental-friendly potential remains tested.
B.AI has a minor role in the current electricity consumption
C.The process of AI detecting gas leaking is easy to achieve.
D.AI is currently the most effective way to reduce emissions.
34.Which solution is more realistic to minimize AI's climate effects?
A.Reconsidering data center operations.
B.Allowing the market to operate.
C.Purchasing renewable-energy credits.D.Fixing a proper price for carbon
35.Which of the following is the best title for text?
A.AI and Climate:A Battle of Balancing.
B.Climate:A Victim or a Beneficiary of AI?
C.AI's next target:Environmental Protection
D.AI:A Threat or a Contributor to the Climate?

Active learning
Most people assume that the human brain is set on "automatic"-that means it leams all by itself.
But this isn't always true.36 We can actively take part in the leaming process and reflect on what we
have leamt. These kinds of leaming behaviors are called"active leaming".I suggest doing four things to
take an active role in your learning.
37 There are two kinds of voices:the inner voice andthe outer voice.Your inner voice expresses
your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about what you hear or read.If you keep paying too
much attention to it,you risk missing important information.Instead, active leamers are open-minded and
foais on what the speaker writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background. In this way.
they are in a better position to make decisions.
Ask questions.Asking questions is the easiest way to promote active leaming. When you get
information from someone, from books or the Intemet, ask questions about the topic.38 And the very
act of working out questions will help you to achieve a higher level of understanding about the topic.
Get to the truth.Active leamers do not accept everything they leam. They att empt to findthe truth at
the heart of each idea.Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based
on truth. No matter how crazy an idea seems, try to find out the source of it.39
Focus on the message. Many peoplemiss out on leaming opportunities because they let their feelings
get in the way.40 This is human nature, after all.But do not forget you can still leam from them.
Active leamers do not judge people based on first impressions or personal feelings. This goes the other way
as well-do not just assume that some people are always right because of who they are or just because
they are your friends.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades,I occasionally allowed them to walk to
and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day,a little dog followed them
home after school. It had short legs and long, lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat.It was the cutest
dog I had ever seen, and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was barely twelve weeks old.It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort.I didn't
know what to do.I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found,but I really didn't
want to.It would break the kids'hearts if someone should show up.Besides, its owners should have
watched it more closely.
第7页共8页
By the end of the week, the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good for the
girls. The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper.
One particular advertisement jumped out at me,and my heart pounded with fear at what I read.
Someone was begging for the retum of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They
sounded desperate. My hand shook.I couldn't bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead,I pretended I hadn't seen the advertisement.I quickly put the paper away in the drawer
and continued with my dusting.I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.By then,we
had named the dog.It looked like a molly,so that was what we called it.It followed the girls
everywhere they went. When they went outside,it was one step behind them. When they did
housework,it was there to lend a hand. There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect
picture:my conscience (was bothering me.I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see
if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done.

(Text 5)
M:Claire, thank you so much for buying me this back pillow. It's really thoughtful of you.I hope it wasn't too
expensive?

M:That's great!
(Text 6)
W:You look worried. Is everything okay with your history assignment?
M:I got my draft back with so many comments.Professor Smith says my arguments aren't supported by
evidence
W:Did you check the online library database? There are lots of good sources there.
M:I did,but most articles are too difficult.Maybe I should choose an easier topic.
W:Don't give up!The writing center tutors can help you analyze those articles.
(Text 7)

W:Wait a second...Oh,I'm sorry,but it's out

M:Unfortunately, the report must be submitted by Monday morning. If we wait until Sunday, there won't be
enough time to analyze the data and finalize the report.
W:I understand the urgency. Here's an idea-what if I handle all the data analysis tonight after practice?
That way,you only need to focus on collecting water and soil samples on Saturday.
M:That's a great solution! To speed things up,let's ask Jenny to assist with the fieldwork on Saturday. She's
experienced with sample collection.
W:Perfect!I'll send you the analyzed data by midnight tonight.Good luck with the fieldwork, and let me
know if you need anything else.
M:Thanks! This plan should ensure we meet the deadline without compromising quality.
(Text 9)
M:Hey Emma,I heard you work in a theater, what's your job?
W:I'm a stage lighting designer.I use lights to set the mood for each scene.
M:Oh,so it's just turning lights on and off?
W:Not at all I have to understand the story's emotions first.
M:How do you prepare for that?
W:I read the script carefully and figure out the feelings of each scene. If it's a sad moment,I might research
soft,cool-colored lights.For exciting parts,I look into bright,dynamic light setups.
M:What comes next after that?
W:I make a plan and show it to the stage manager. We discuss if it matches the director's vision.
M:Is that the end of your work?
W:Nearly.I still watch the final runs to make sure the lights change at the right time and enhance the
performance
M:That sounds more complicated than I thought.
W:It is,but I love it.Being able to shape how the audience feels about the play makes it all worth it.
(Text 10)

Bridge into the city, and it is now blocked in both directions. All traffic heading into the city is being directed
to use another road, causing long delays of over an hour.Drivers are strongly advised to avoid this area and use
a different bridge instead.Separately,on the M4highway,a large truck has stopped working in the main lane
near a popular exit, resulting in very slow traffic for those traveling away from the city.Emergency services
are there to help, but delays are expected to last through the evening rush hour.Lastly, due to necessary repairs
